When she woke the next morning, he was still asleep. She watched as the room lightened and grinned at the stubble on his face, the way his hair seemed to spike even more. He was beautiful to her first thing in the morning and she knew why. Just being able to see him then was enough to make her happy.
When his eye opened a minute later and his smile spread, she could, for just a moment, imagine what it would be like to wake like that every morning. She could pretend in that minute how it would feel to know that, aside from missions, aside from duties, he'd always be there.
And the wanting of it surprised her.
She'd never thought about marriage, never thought about permanent. She'd seen too much death, lost too many people to be able to think in those terms. But right then, she did think about it. Right then, she wanted it very, very much.
And with that thought came another, even more surprising. What would it be like to have his child? She swallowed hard as the image popped into her head. Silver hair and green eyes, this spitting image of his father with her eyes.
She forced the image away, forced the thoughts away. Regardless of what they had now, regardless of how much they did have, she couldn't have that. There was still that damnable rule in the way. And then there was the whole idea that this was Kakashi she was thinking about. She couldn't begin to imagine him wanting something like that.
He watched the emotions as they passed over her face. He couldn't decipher them all, but he had a feeling he knew what sparked some of them, at least. Because he, too, was thinking about it.
He found himself wishing that he could wake to that beautiful face of hers every day. He thought that seeing that first thing might just make facing each day a little, or even a lot, easier. He'd never before considered something like that - something so…permanent. It just wasn't for him.
But now that the thought had wormed its way in, he couldn't so easily dismiss it. He could too easily imagine a life with her, too easily see something like a normal life. Or as close to it as ninja ever get.
Which only served to frustrate him. It still couldn't be. It was still…there's that word again…forbidden.
He pushed the thoughts away. They'd figure something out, they had to, but they still had some time together before they were forced to. In the mean time, they could enjoy the time together. "So, we have a day off."
He watched her sigh and watched the shift in her thinking. "Yeah. I can't remember the last day I had off."
"Surely Tsunade gives you time off." He raised an eyebrow.
She laughed. "This is Tsunade. If she doesn't get a day off, no one does."
"Well, then, all the more reason to enjoy it. Have you given any thought to how to spend it?" She glanced up at him, an evil grin lurking around the edges.
"Well, I think it would look bad if we never left the room, so I was thinking about going down to the beach."
Kakashi felt the blood drain from his face. "I sincerely hope you're not planning to wear the same…um…suit that you did at the fishing village."
She shook her head, laughing. "No, I bought one yesterday."
He breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, good. Would you mind if I came along?"
She raised an eyebrow. "It's a decent suit. You don't have to worry."
"No, it's not that, I thought I might just enjoy some time down there. I do know how to relax, you know."
"You mean read." She laughed.
"That, too." He allowed.
"Okay okay. I think we better be present for breakfast. Then we can go down to the beach. How's that?"
He paused to kiss her, but the quick peck he'd planned turned into much, much more. It was quite some time before they were able to go to breakfast.
Sakura dropped her bag and spread out the towel she'd brought along. She dug into the bag and pulled out the tube of sunscreen. She could heal sunburn, but it seemed silly when she could prevent it in the first place.
She watched Kakashi get settled next to her, spreading his own towel out and sitting down. She'd been surprised when he knocked on her door that morning after breakfast. He'd left the vest and gloves behind, the headband and mask, of course, still in place.
Now, he pulled the sandals and shirt off and Sakura had to swallow the drool. She was usually a little too preoccupied to notice just how…built he was. It only got worse, when the pants came off and he had swim trunks on underneath. She sent up a prayer of thanks that he was at least wearing trunks.
He still had his mask and headband on, and he looked up at her now and raised his eyebrow. "Is something wrong, Sakura?"
She shook her head, bringing herself out of it. "Maybe you need to wear more. I might be tempted to make a crater out of this beach over you."
He grinned. "Well, now you know how I felt. At least you have a decent swimsuit, this time."
She grinned. "True." Then the look on her face turned wicked as she took her top and skirt off. This bikini did, in fact, have more fabric to it. But it was still a bikini. Red as usual, it covered all the important stuff. The bottom didn't show anything, and the cups covered most of her breasts.
But there was still plenty not covered. She'd seen a one piece suit, but couldn't resist the possibility of driving him a little crazy again. So, she'd picked that one.
"That's not any better." She could have sworn he actually growled.
She laughed. "Yes, it is. It covers the important stuff!"
He stared at her, and she hoped she hadn't pushed him too far. "Not well enough."
She sighed. "Really, Kakashi. I didn't have a lot of choices." She stepped up to him and smiled up into his face. "Besides, as jealous as I am of the women staring at you right now, at least this way I know I have your attention." And with that, she grinned again and headed down the beach to the water. Kakashi sent up a bid for patience that went unanswered and went after her.
They spent the day together, freer and more comfortable with each other than they'd been in a very long time. They didn't realize how easy it was for the others on the beach to see their love for each other. They didn't notice just how much they touched, how much the looks on their faces said about their feelings.
They had sushi for lunch on the boardwalk and spent the afternoon reading together under an umbrella. So when it was time to go back for dinner, neither was ready to leave the beach. They recognized the easy comfort with each other and weren't ready to have to hide it again so soon.
But go back they must, so they packed their things, dressed again and started back. But when they were still a few blocks away, Kakashi pulled her aside into a quiet alley. When she looked up at him in confusion, he said, "I just wanted another minute," and he bent his head, pulling the mask out of the way and kissed her.
When he pulled back, he smiled at the happy look on her face. "I'll be there tonight, as soon as I can." He was rewarded with an even brighter, wider smile.
"Okay." She stood up on her toes and kissed him once more before pulling the mask up for him.
With the day they had together, dinner wasn't nearly so hard. They were able to share stories of their friends and listen as Maiko and Hiroshi told about how they met and fell in love. They didn't even notice how long they were there until Maiko started yawning. "Oh! I'll be so glad when you can do this procedure, Sakura."
Sakura smiled. "Just remember, it can still not work."
"I know there's that chance. But I have a good feeling about it." She leaned over and hugged her. "Good night, then." She glanced at Kakashi and winked and Sakura valiantly fought a blush.
They said their good nights to Hiroshi before heading back to the guest wing. "I'll be over in a few. I need to clean up first."
Sakura gave him a wicked smile. "You know, I do, too…"
He raised an eyebrow, glanced left and right, and opened her door. "Well, then. There's no reason to wait, is there?" And with matching grins, they disappeared into her room.
