Naruto smiled as Shikamaru sat down next to him and Sasuke. “I couldn't help but notice you have a ring on a troublesome finger, Naruto.”
Sasuke sighed. “It's not like we didn't know my brother was going to ask the moron.”
Shikamaru snorted. “Yeah, we did.” He looked at Sasuke and sighed. “Something is stressing you more than normal.”
Sasuke shrugged. It wasn't as if he could talk to Shikamaru about this. Kakashi had made it clear they were not supposed to talk about anything that they knew about. “It's just annoying living under the same roof as those two and their apparently uncontrollable libidos.”
Shikamaru snickered as Naruto blushed. “Well your house repairs should be done soon, I would assume. Then you can go back to normal – only dealing with them on the weekends.”
Naruto frowned. He didn't realize Sasuke was having such an issue with him and Itachi. He'd have to talk to Itachi and the two of them would need to tone it down. He hadn't been lying when he told Itachi that Sasuke would always come first. “Hey Sas,” he said quietly, “I'm sorry about that.”
Sasuke shook his head. “I know you don't mean to.” He sighed. “I'm just stressed out. Gotta do well this semester or we'll have to start looking at new schools again.”
Shikamaru didn't press, but he could tell there was more going on than what the two friends had said on the surface. While his father had retired to civilian life quite a while ago, the man was still the ultimate strategist. He'd bring home the clues and try to hash them out later. If they could figure out what was going on, maybe he could help out his friends.
Sasuke sighed as the teacher walked into the classroom. “I never thought I'd say I miss Gai,” he whispered.
Shikamaru snorted and Naruto nodded. “Class isn't the same without him; that's for sure.”

Sai smirked as he sat across from Madara with Itachi next to him. There was the same long haired man that had been there a few weeks ago, just before Christmas, there as well. Itachi had simply nodded at the man and sat down feigning disinterest. Sai, though, had moved forward and dropped himself in the same seat as the blond. “Uncle, your friends are so attractive. I don't even think I need Itachi's Naruto anymore if you keep such attractive men around for me.”
Madara snorted as Deidara squeaked. “He's not yours Sai. He's working for me, digging on some papers.”
Deidara quickly shook his head. “I'm sure if I was into dudes, you'd be a great catch, yeah? But as it stands, I am completely straight. Girls are the only thing that do it for me.”
“Well,” Sai was cut off from what he was going to say as Haku limped his way into the room. Sai snickered at the obvious implication. “Dr. Haku,” he sing-songed, “Uncle must have had his wicked way with you several times last night.”
Haku blushed. “Shush you.” He smiled as Madara quickly pushed back his own chair to make room for Haku on his lap. Haku gave Madara a deep kiss as he gently sat down. Wrapping his arms around Madara's neck he laid his head on the man's shoulders and closed his eyes as Madara turned his attention back to Deidara.
“Deidara, since you haven't been able to find anything, you're free to move forward how you wish. If you think you might be able to find something, keep looking. If you don't, then feel free to move on to your next task.”
Deidara smiled and nodded at Haku and Madara. “Honestly, I don't think I'm going to find anything, but they're paying me on top of you paying me, so I'll put in my two weeks notice and find something else.” He pushed Sai off his lap as he stood up and nodded at all four men and Itachi's shadow in the corner before he headed out for the day.
Sai smirked. “Seriously, he has a nice ass.”
Itachi shook his head. “Whatever keeps your attention off Naruto.”
Sai shrugged and turned back to Madara as he sat down in the chair again. “Kakuzu is getting upset that I haven't brought him any of your secrets yet.” He shrugged. “I don't think I can put him off much longer.”
Haku leaned over and held a roll of film out to Sai. “I'm sorry that it took us so long to figure out what we wanted to give over.” He frowned as Madara put his hand on the film canister before Sai could grab it. “Madara?”
Madara sighed. “Sai, be careful when you give him this. I'm worried he'll just kill you on the spot when you hand it over.” He frowned. “Provided he doesn't, I need you and Itachi for a big mission starting next week. It's not like what I've had you involved in this far, but I don't think I can trust this to anyone but family.”
Itachi frowned. “If you need family, I can do it. I don't like what we're doing, but if I'm going to have to do it, I may as well do it properly.”
Madara shook his head. “It's big. I can't have either of you do it alone. It's the most dangerous thing I've asked either of you to do.”
Itachi frowned and glanced at Gai. “Make sure Lee keeps Naruto's ears away from this one. I don't need him thinking he needs to rush in and save me.” After Gai nodded, Itachi frowned. “Sai, you pain in the ass idiot jackass cousin of mine, don't get yourself killed. When you're not trying to drug Naruto, steal Naruto, and kill my brother I don't completely wish for your death unless it's by my hand.”
Sai smirked and batted his eyelashes. “Awww, Madara, 'Tachi loves me!”
Haku snorted. “I'm not sure that's what I heard.”
“Shh, that's the closest they've been to getting along since this started,” Madara clamped a hand over Haku's mouth, playfully. Glancing at his nephews, he sighed. “Itachi, wait at the little restaurant next to the FBI offices for Sai to return. If he's not back within 2 hours, call me. Sai, go deliver that and be careful. I need you. When this is done come back so I can give you your assignment.”
Itachi nodded and looked at Gai before heading out to the restaurant. Sai frowned and looked at Madara. “What are your orders on defending myself? How much slaughter is allowed?”
Madara smiled sadly, “If it saves you, all of them. I don't care.”
Sai nodded and left the office. He sighed as he stepped outside and pulled out his cell. First he sent a text to Hidan before calling Kakuzu and setting up a meeting to deliver the film Madara produced. “I got the film. Where should I meet you?”
Kakuzu chuckled. “You're not going to meet me. Zetsu will be by where you met us at the docks the other day. You can drop it off with him.”
“Sure. Let me know if you need anything else from me,” Sai hung up and headed out to the docks.

Itachi frowned as he sipped at his coffee. He was worried about Sai. It had been nearly an hour since Sai had taken off to meet with Kakuzu's group. If Madara was concerned they may just kill Sai, it was a real concern. Itachi had sent that information ahead to Hidan as he wasn't sure what the man would want to do with it. Hidan had assured Itachi they were okay.
The bell over the door jingled and Itachi exhaled as Deidara came in. He frowned, wishing it had been Sai. Deidara nodded at Itachi before ordering and getting his drink. He smiled and sat down with Itachi. “You look like shit.”
“Sai went to meet with Kakuzu like an hour ago for something that should have been quick. I'm just on edge.” Itachi ran his hands through his hair.
Deidara nodded. “I could see how that would make you nervous, but I'm sure he's fine. If there's anything your cousin is good at it, it's worming out of sticky situations.”
Itachi snorted and glanced up as the bell jingled again, breathing out a sigh of relief at seeing Sai walk through the door. His relief was short lived as he saw his cousin hobbling a bit. He glanced at Deidara who nodded and turned back to his drink. Itachi grabbed Sai's shoulder when it looked like he was going to fall over and steadied his cousin. “What happened?” Itachi whispered.
Sai shook his head. “I need to get to Hidan without going in, but I'm sure Madara's watching this place since you were supposed to wait for me. Do you think you could get K to give him a message?”
Itachi nodded. “I need to get you to Haku. I'm sure he's the only doctor Madara will trust you with. You look like shit.”
Sai went to nod, but slumped down passed out. Itachi's eyes widened, but he grabbed Sai and hefted him up and out the door. He slid Sai into the backseat and pulled out his phone as he walked around to the drivers seat. He sent a quick text to Kakashi to let Hidan know he had Sai, and they were headed to the Hospital and not to come because Haku would be the doctor.
Itachi called Madara. “I need Haku at the hospital. I'm assuming you don't trust the other doctors to handle this.”
Madara cursed, “He's on his way.” There was some rustling in the office as someone was moving around quickly. “I've got something to tie up here, then I'm on my way too.”
Itachi hung up and threw his car through lanes of traffic far faster than was necessarily safe. Sai groaned next to him. Itachi put his hand over Sai as he tried to move around. “Just stay still. You passed out just after asking me to get Hidan a message.”
Sai groaned again, but laid still. “Fucking trap.”
Itachi frowned, and sped up as he neared the hospital. “We're almost there. Haku was headed here. He's closer so he should beat us.” He dropped his hand to take Sai's. “Please hang on. I just got you back, I can't lose you.”
Sai coughed. “Not losing me.” He groaned again as he breathed. “Ribs, maybe lung.”
Itachi exhaled as the hospital came into view. “We're almost there. I'm sorry if I aggravated any of your injuries.”
As Itachi pulled into the hospital parking lot, Haku was coming out with a bunch of nurses and a stretcher. Haku quickly took charge and started ordering the nurses around as they moved Sai from the car and onto the stretcher.
Itachi stood back as they worked, following when they wheeled Sai into the building. Haku pulled Itachi to the side just before he walked through the doors to Madara's private examination room. “I can't have you back here. I know it's hard, but my gut feeling is he'll be okay. It's gonna be a rough couple weeks, but he's not critical.”
Itachi nodded. “Just make sure he's fit to work.”
Haku smiled softly before heading back to the room Sai was brought to. Itachi headed to Madara's waiting room. He pulled his phone out to find a message from Hidan. I'll fucking kill that goddamn asshole walking into a fucking trap without any fucking backup. He chuckled as he texted back that Haku thought it wasn't anything critical.
“Itachi,” Madara said as he walked in the room. “What did Haku say?”
Itachi shrugged. “He said it didn't seem critical.” He stood up and nodded at his uncle. “I need to move my car and I'd like to go see Naruto since we haven't had a whole lot of private time lately.”
Madara held up a hand. “You can, soon. Did Sai say anything?”
“He came in to the cafe, tried to tell me something, and passed out. He woke up in the car and told me that it was a trap and he thought ribs might be broken, maybe a punctured lung. That's all I got from him.”
Madara growled. “I wasn't going to start it, but it's war on Kakuzu now.” He huffed. “Grab Green and meet me at Indigenous in an hour. I'll come back to check on Sai.”
Itachi shook his head. “It can wait until tomorrow. Your shit damn near killed Sai and Naruto is mixed up in your turf war shit by being your employee. I need to reassure myself that he's fine, because while Sai agreed to this shit and I did under duress, Naruto is one hundred percent an unwilling victim.”
Madara narrowed his eyes at being contradicted. However this wasn't some nameless employee. This was his nephew. “Only because I understand you're worried are getting away with speaking to me that way, Itachi. Be back at the club tomorrow no later than nine AM.”
Itachi nodded and was gone. Madara made a cup of coffee and then sat down to wait for Haku to come give him an update.

Hidan growled as Kakashi provided him the update on Sai. “I'm gonna go kill that fucker.”
Kakashi snorted. “Sai or Kakuzu?”
Hidan took a deep breath and scrubbed his hand across his face. “I don't know, both.” He sighed. “I hate to put you in the middle, but can you ask Itachi how he's doing?”
Kakashi smiled. “He just walked in actually. Give me a second and I'll grab him for you.”
Hidan heard as Kakashi hollered out the door for Itachi and a quick conversation between the two. Itachi came on the line, “Hidan, I'm sorry.”
“How's Sai,” Hidan cut to the chase. He knew it wasn't Itachi's fault anymore than it was Sai's. The job was dangerous sometimes. Something both he and Sai had had to accept when they started this relationship.
Itachi frowned. “They wouldn't let me go in with him and I couldn't sit around with Madara without blowing cover. I talked to Haku though and he said it wasn't critical. Sai passed out, but woke up on my way to the hospital. He told me he thought he had broken ribs and maybe a punctured lung.” He bit his lip. “I know there wasn't anything more I could do, but I feel like I should have.”
Hidan breathed out his pent up stress. “We know what this goddamn job brings us.” He shook his head. “I'm going to the hospital. Fuck Madara. It would be expected that the asshole's partner show up to find out what the fuck happened. Madara would probably be more suspicious if I ignored my fucking partner.”
Itachi nodded. “Yeah, I'm sure he won't object.” He handed the phone back to Kakashi. “I'm going to Naruto if you need me.”

“And that's what I've had so far. I know it's not much, but I can't help but feel like something big is happening and it's probably the closest I've seen to something driving those two apart,” Shikamaru sighed as he explained what he'd seen to his dad. “I know something is off, but I can't put my finger on it. I thought maybe if I talked it out with you, I'd be able to figure out what I'm missing.”
Shikaku chuckled. “Well first, I'll have to pass my congratulations on to Iruka on his upcoming family member.” He stroked his goatee. “From what you've said, I'd agree that you have something bigger on your hands.” He clasped Shikamaru on his shoulder. “I'll get Uncle Hiashi pulled in on this.”
Shikamaru smirked. “You know you can just call him Hiashi now. I'm not four anymore. I understand that he's not really your brother now.”
Shikaku snorted. “But it was so funny when you thought he was my brother just because he was in the house in the morning.”
Shikamaru pouted. “I was three. I didn't realize people sometimes were up in the morning. I still don't understand why people are up in the morning when they could be sleeping instead.”
Shikaku shook his head. “Lazy ass. It's a good thing you've got a good strategic mind. You'll probably succeed despite your lack of drive.” He nudged his son with his shoulder. “Thank you for bringing this to me so I can help your load. I'll set something up with Hiashi.”
