THANKS SO MUCH TO MY TEMPORARY BETA'S!!!! They are totally rock stars!!! Kurama Crazy, DancingKitsune and Hitsuke totally saved this chapter. Well, two of them have written back so far, but I'll make additional changes when the third chimes in. :)
Please review so they'll know how much their help was appreciated!I don't own these characters. Please don't sue me.~~~~
'Mina?' It was a thought, not spoken allowed, and Mina was startled to realize it was Naruto talking to her from down the hallway.
'I can hear you.' She thought back at him. It was a little strange he had let himself into her head. That seemed to be happening a lot lately.
'We didn't tell Sasuke about you. I didn't know how and I wasn't sure he'd believe me anyway. He might have thought it was a trap... All we told him is that you're a good witch.'
Mina sighed to herself and hoped Naruto couldn't sense her frustration. This wasn't his fault. It was Itachi's fault. She was shaken from her thoughts by the sound of glass breaking and Gaara's sand shooting out of the gourd.
'That's fine. Can you guys wait outside the door though? We have company.'
She had been relatively sure Naruto wouldn't just leave them in the room to fight alone so she jumped toward the door trying to lock it right as he came bursting through.
"What's going on?" He shouted over the cries of terror. These ninjas were obviously not well trained. A good assasin would never waste the energy it took screaming for mercy. The yelling was so loud it woke up the two sleeping ninja's so now there were eleven people in Gaara's small apartment all looking for a fight. Mina raised her hand and glanced at Neji. She'd promised him she wouldn't control anyone again, in his presence, unless someone was in danger, and honestly Gaara looked like he had the situation under control. She dropped her hand to her side.
"Get back in the hall!" Gaara yelled. She wasn't worried about him, and she would prefer not to watch six grizzly deaths so she complied.
Mina shoved all three boys hard and since they were still standing close together they fell like dominoes out the door. In all the commotion Mina hadn't actually gotten a chance to look at Sasuke, so as she untangled her legs out of the pile of boys she was surprised to find him staring at her intently.
"You're my sister, aren't you?" His voice was even but not unfriendly.
"How did you know?"
"You look like me, and Itachi mentioned having a sister yesterday. I thought he had lost his mind, but obviously he had not. You're Mina, the witch, and my sister."
Mina didn't know how to react. He certainly wasn't brimming with excitement about having found his long lost sister but after all he had been through that was probably to be expected.
"That's pretty much it." She said since didn't want to overdo this. If he needed space and time she would give it to him. Right now though...
"Mina, get in here. You three stay there." Gaara had opened the door and was commanding her in a way that made her instantly furious. She pushed those feelings back down though and entered, shooting Naruto and Neji a look that told them they should listen to the redhead. As she stepped in she saw 6 sand cocoons each with a head sticking out the top.
"Umm... What do you need?" Mina was confused. Gaara obviously had the situation under control.
"I don't want to kill them." He mumbled. He said it so quietly she wouldn't have heard it if she hadn't heard it in her mind as well. She stepped toward him and placed her hand on his forehead.
'We can talk in here if you don't want them to hear you.' She could tell he was confused. She didn't even need to read it. It was written all over his face.
'I don't want to kill them. I recognize the man with blond hair. He has a son, and his wife works at the market and she smiles at me occasionally. I don't want to kill him. I don't know what to do.'
Mina's heart melted as she watched Gaara. He looked so much like a lost child. She hadn't expected this, but it made sense with what she'd sensed from him earlier. He didn't want to be a cold blooded killer.
'I'll help you. What do you want me to do?'
'Make them stop coming after me. Make them go home to their families and leave me alone.'
No wonder he was so attached to Naruto. Naruto was validation that a person with a demon in them could show mercy without showing weakness.
'Do you rent out this entire floor?'
Gaara nodded solemnly.
'Leave me alone with them. I'll do what you asked, and you get the boys settled in to apartments. Tell Naruto and Sasuke that I want to talk to them before they go to bed.' Mina removed her hand from Gaara's forehead and spoke to the ninjas who were staring at them.
"When he removes the sand you will remain where you are. You are unable to move."
Gaara retracted the sand and then walked slowly toward the door. He turned back at the last minute like he wanted to say something, but then continued out the exit without a word.
~~~~
Naruto practically pounced on Gaara when he came out of the room.
"What was that? Why couldn't we help you?" Naruto was trying not to pout, but being left out in the hall like helpless children was demeaning.
"Because you can't control minds and that's the help I needed. You need to sleep tonight so that we will be able to head into the desert early tomorrow."
"Head into the desert?" Neji asked.
Naruto had a feeling he knew where this was going and he wanted to grab Sasuke by the wrist and take off running down the hall. How could Mina do this to them? Didn't she know what chasing Itachi was going to do to Sasuke? He was angry with her but decided to keep it quiet until he had a chance to talk.
"Are we going after Itachi?" Sasuke asked. His voice hitched on his brother's name and he leaned a little deeper into Naruto's shoulder.
"Mina and I are going after him and I believe it is her intention that you join us. I doubt she would force you though. She will be out shortly to discuss this with you. I rent the whole floor because I prefer not to have neighbors. Hyuuga, this will be your room for the night." Gaara stated as he opened a door for the white-eyed boy. Neji entered and closed the door behind him.
"I suppose you two will share a room?" Naruto noticed that Gaara's voice seemed a little more malicious than usual, but figured it was just his general dislike of Sasuke.
"Yeah, that would be great." Naruto spoke back in his friendliest voice. Regardless of Gaara's demeanor he considered him to be a friend and someone that he cared about.
"Don't get too comfortable." Gaara said. "Mina wants to talk to you when she's finished." With that he opened the door and Sasuke and Naruto hurried inside. When Gaara shut the door Sasuke pulled Naruto into a fierce kiss, slamming him with some force into the door. They broke apart gasping for air and for the first time Sasuke seemed to relax a little.
"Do you trust her?" Sasuke asked. He walked over and sat on the bed, wrapping his arms around his knees and looking at him with broken eyes.
His poor Sasuke. His world just kept being turned upside down. He wasn't sure what was worse, not having a family and never having a chance at one, or having one sibling who wanted to kill you and one that you knew nothing about. Well, he knew he would prefer to have a family, no matter the cost... but Sasuke was different. You'd never know it from looking at him, but he was by far the more fragile of the two of them.
"I trust her. She's proven to be a good friend so far. Neji trusts her too, and you know how hard he can be to fool."
"Naruto, about Neji..."
"It's ok. He told me and I'm not upset with you. You were hurting and you reached out to him."
Sasuke considered this for a moment.
"Why are you so good to me?"
"Because I love you."
Mina surveyed the six men before her. They looked terrified, as well they should. The oldest appeared to be about a year younger than her and the youngest appeared to be two or three years younger than Naruto. Mina lifted her hand and began.
"You will not try to harm Gaara again in any way. You will also not try to harm any of his companions including myself. It is his mercy that has saved you all. Remember that." She turned to look directly at the blond Gaara had spoken of before. "All of you may leave quickly out of the window... except you."
When all of the men but one had exited she turned back to face the remaining man.
"I need you to give Kankuro a message for me. Tell him that Gaara is under protection now and that unless he wants a visit from the Kyuubi vessel, the holder of the Witch in the Woods, the Hyuuga genius and the Uchiha heir, he'll leave his brother alone. Can you tell him that for me?"
"Yes." he mumbled, still looking terrified.
"It was the goodness of your wife that changed his mind. Please tell her that."
His face brightened a little and he looked at her expectantly.
"You may leave."
He was out the window in a flash and Mina turned her attention to the hallway. She needed to speak to Naruto and Sasuke about tomorrow before it was too late.
~~~~
"You shouldn't be wandering Hyuuga."
Neji turned around to face Gaara. He had been caught.
"I was looking for some paper and something to write with. I wanted to get word back to the village that we're safe."
"Wait in your room until Mina is finished and then I'll bring you some from my apartment."
"You can wait in here too if you like. You shouldn't have to wander your own halls."
Gaara was a little surprised at the invitation seeing as how Neji had never liked him much. He seemed different now though, more relaxed. Perhaps the distance from his family was putting him more at ease. Gaara was well aware of the seal that was hidden under Neji's forehead protector. When he had first heard and understood about the main family and the branch family even he thought it sounded barbaric. To make your own family your slaves... that was almost as bad as trying to assassinate them.
"I take it if you're writing a letter you're coming with us tomorrow?"
"I am. Why are you coming?"
"To be a guide."
"I figured that much. I mean why is it that you care to come? You've never struck me as the type of person who does things out of the goodness of his heart, and there is certainly no love lost between you and Uchiha. Is this about Naruto?"
Gaara could not find words. Neji was too observant for his own good and Gaara was relieved to hear Mina exit his room and knock on the door next to this one.
"I'll get you the paper now. Stay here."
~~~~
Naruto was on the door before Mina had knocked twice. He wanted to push her out into the hall and talk to her without Sasuke hearing, but he knew his boyfriend wouldn't like that so he let her in. He would just have to have a thought conversation in his head while they had a real conversation out loud for Sasuke's benefit.
"I won't stay for long. May I sit here?" She gestured at the spot on the bed next to Sasuke and he nodded.
"Tomorrow Gaara and I are going after Itachi. It is my goal in life to kill him for what he took away from me... for what he made certain I would never know. I understand if you two would like to go back to your village, I wouldn't blame you if you did, but if you want to come with us, I would like to have you. I would like to get to know you." She was looking at Sasuke and Naruto felt a pang of jealousy.
'Why are you doing this Mina? Sasuke's been through too much. Why ask him to do more?' Naruto could tell she had heard him because she tilted her head a little like she was listening to something far away.
"I'm going." Sasuke said, not taking his eyes off of Mina's face.
'Because Itachi is his brother as well. Do you think he would forgive me if I killed Itachi and he didn't have a chance to get his own revenge... or to save him if that's the path he chooses?'
"I'm going too." Naruto chimed in, trying to keep his voice light and friendly. Apparently Mina had her own suspicious about Sasuke's feelings for Itachi. Of course she would... even if Naruto was hiding it, she could probably read her younger brother like a book.
'That's all the more reason to stop this now. He's too fragile to be making these choices. This is going to kill him.'
"Good. I'll see you both in the morning. I'm going to talk to Gaara about the best way to get where I think they're going. It may be easiest to go back to Witch Village and try one of the doors there. If Itachi goes to sleep tonight or passes out, I should be able to find out where he is... if he'll tell me."
'I appreciate that you want to protect him Naruto, but ignoring the way he feels about Itachi isn't helping him.
Naruto let out a little gasp.
'I'm trying to protect him.' he thought back at her trying hard not to let his face show the way he was feeling inside.
'If you don't talk to him about this, it will eat him alive. He's on the edge, Naruto, and I can't save him. Don't run from this or you'll lose him.'
Mina stood up and bent down to give Sasuke a kiss on the forehead. She turned and gave Naruto an identical kiss and then sighed.
"My two little brothers. I love you both. Have sweet dreams and don't stay up too late."
As soon as she was out of the room Sasuke turned his glare on to his boyfriend.
"What was that all about?"
"What? The two little brothers thing?"
"No, the you and she talking in your heads about me thing. Do you think I'm stupid?"
Naruto silently swore at himself for thinking that Sasuke wouldn't figure it out.
"I don't think you're stupid. I was trying to protect you and Mina told me to cut it out. We need to talk."
"About what?" Sasuke shifted uncomfortably and then leaned back against the headboard.
"About Itachi. If we find him will you kill him?
~~~~
The question took Sasuke by surprise and he couldn't get any words to immediately come out of his mouth. If this were anyone else asking he would have immediately said yes, but if Naruto was asking, it meant he deserved an honest answer.
"I don't know anymore." Sasuke had never planned on sharing this. It was his burden alone. It was his greatest shame. It wouldn't surprise him if Naruto turned around and walked away.
"That's ok, Sasuke." Naruto's words were soothing and he put his head on Sasuke's chest, lightly brushing his hands up and down his sides.
Sasuke was silent for a minute but when he spoke his voice was loud and slightly out of control.
"It's not ok." He pushed Naruto's head off of him and stared at his friend with terrified eyes. "He raped me. He raped you. I'm sure he probably hurt you in a million other ways as well. He killed my whole family; I saw them dead. I used to hate him. I hated him so much that it felt like it would suffocate me sometimes. I've lost that though and I want it back so much. This is so hard." He rolled over on his side turning his back on his friend. He was crying again. He didn't want to look at Naruto so he stared blankly at the wall as tears streamed down his face. If his blond love walked out of the room and never spoke to him again he would understand completely. He was a sick... demented.
Naruto didn't leave though. Instead he lay down behind Sasuke and got as close to him as he possibly could. He slowly began kissing the back of his elegant neck and pushed his shirt down so he could suck gently on his shoulder blade. He didn't speak, but continued the caresses and once again began ghosting his fingers down Sasuke's side.
"It's ok my love. It's ok. Everything will be ok." Naruto whispered it over and over hoping that if he said it enough times it would be true. Being completely honest with himself, he realized he didn't care a bit if Sasuke was having trouble hating Itachi. He was his brother. Naruto didn't know exactly how that felt, but he did know that even after Sasuke had tried to kill him all those years ago, he had forgiven him completely now. If he could forgive that when they were still only friends, how much stronger would a brother's love be?
Sasuke had been still for almost an hour so when he rolled over Naruto was surprised to see that he wasn't asleep.
"You aren't going to leave me?" Sasuke's tone was soft and pleading.
He still couldn't believe Naruto would stay by his side through all of this.
"You couldn't get rid of me if you tried." When he spoke Sasuke hugged him tightly. "How tired are you?" Naruto asked, his blue eyes sparkling. Sasuke could plainly see what Naruto had in mind.
"Not so tired that I can't do this." With that he rolled over on top of the blond straddling his waist. Sasuke was surprised at how much better this made him feel instantly. It had been too long. He covered Naruto's mouth with his own and smirked slightly as his lover whimpered.
Grinding together Sasuke realized it was only going to take him a minute to get off if he didn't slow things down. He wanted this to be more than just quick satisfaction. He wanted his body to remember what it was like to be pressed against the one he loved.
He pulled urgently at Naruto's waistband and the younger boy arched his back and lifted his hips so Sasuke could remove his pants and boxers. Sasuke then removed his own and leaned back down low over Naruto to suck gently on his neck. His plan was to remain patient and just enjoy Naruto, but as their erections grazed each other pleasure shot through his whole body and he could think of nothing else.
Naruto was twisting and whimpering, trying to get more contact with him, more friction and heat. Sasuke used his hand to grab them both, and as they kissed and petted and sucked and writhed he kept up a steady pace, not too fast, not too slow, in order to bring the maximum amount of enjoyment.
"Sasuke... please... please..." He was begging and he didn't care. Naruto was breathless and his blatant desire sent shivers down Sasuke's spine. It was the sexiest thing he'd ever heard in his life. Picking up his pace, Naruto wrapped his legs around Sasuke's waist and rode the waves of pleasure until they both climaxed almost simultaneously.
Sasuke collapsed on top of his friend and didn't move or say anything for the next few minutes. He was content to stay this way forever, listening to the heartbeat of the one he loved, and ignoring the fact that outside of these walls was a world he wanted no part of anymore. It was Naruto that broke the silence.
"We better get cleaned up or we're going to be stuck together like Siamese twins in the morning." His voice was cheerful and it gave Sasuke something he had forgotten he'd ever had before. Hope. Leave it to Naruto to make him feel like he could face anything.
Naruto brought over a warm wash cloth and started to clean off Sasuke and himself. As they finshed cleaning up there was a knock on the door and after they pulled their clothes back on, Naruto answered it. It was Neji.
"We need to talk." His voice was serious and Naruto moved to the side to let him pass into the room.
"What is it?"
"Are you following Mina and Gaara into the desert, or not?"
"We are." Naruto spoke for the both of them. He didn't want Sasuke to have to think about this anymore.
"Then I am as well." Neji still looked troubled and neither of the boys failed to notice.
"Why are you so concerned?" Sasuke knew the older boy well enough to know that he didn't concern himself over trivial things. He was a genius after all and a damn good ninja. Hanging out with Shikamaru had sharpened his skills even more.
"I'm concerned about your sister. If we go with her, and something goes wrong, are we powerful enough to stop her if we have to?"
"What do you mean, if something goes wrong?" Naruto asked. He didn't quite understand what Neji was getting at.
"I'm not entirely convinced she means to kill Itachi. I think this may be nothing more than a rescue mission, and once we save him, she's going to help him escape."
"What makes you think that?" This was something Naruto hadn't considered, but it was definitely a possibility. Is that why she wanted Sasuke along?
"Because it's pretty apparent that she's been strong enough to kill Itachi for some time now, and yet she's chosen not to."
"What about their binding?"
"It's an excuse. She could have Sasuke unbind her right now if she wanted. They're blood as well. The witch knows how to do it. I don't want to make you suspicious of your new sister, Sasuke. I like Mina. I just want to make sure we are all aware of what could happen."
"I appreciate it." Sasuke looked into Neji's eyes. If only Neji knew that Sasuke was secretly glad about this new development.
"So what do we do if she tries to help him escape? Do we try to capture them both? Naruto, you've seen her fight in the castle. Do you think it's even possible?" Neji asked and Naruto cringed on the inside at his questions. If all this was true, he wasn't certain he would or even could stop her. He knew that it was a betrayal to the village, but it seemed like this should be a decision left up to the siblings. Besides, Mina had been nice to him. He didn't want to plot against her.
"I don't think it's a matter of strength at this point, Neji. Even with Gaara on our side, I still can't say that would be enough. She's much more powerful than she appears. The thing is though; I don't think she would fight us. She's already given up using any of her mind controlling powers around us, just because it upsets you. She's so worried about being evil that it cripples her in combat. She just puts everyone to sleep." While Naruto spoke he became acutely aware of Sasuke's blank stare. This was the look he always got when he was planning something that Naruto wasn't going to like.
"Thanks for stopping in Neji. I really think we need to get some sleep. We should confront Mina about this in the morning. Better to have it out in the open than to be tiptoeing around secrets while our lives are at risk."
"Do you think she'll respond well?" Neji asked.
"I'll talk to her. I know I don't know her well, but she is my sister." Sasuke volunteered.
"That's not a bad idea." Naruto mumbled as he chewed on his bottom lip. Maybe talking to Mina would help Sasuke feel less alone. He had a feeling a make-out session and words of love weren't going to be enough to stop this train wreck of a week.
