Chapter 17
Kakashi woke up when he heard voices outside the door. He recognized both chakra signatures. He didn’t know what was worse – the Snow ninja or that someone had brought a desk ninja on a rescue mission. This probably wasn’t a trick. Umino Iruka wasn’t in any of the bingo books so no one would know to impersonate him. He pretended to be sleeping and waited to get up until he could no longer hear the sound of splashing. He picked up a fireplace poker and leaned on it as he limped down the hallway. He pushed open the door and raised the poker to defend himself if need be. “Hey Love,” Iruka sighed sitting up so that the water no longer covered his shoulders. “You’re letting the warm out. Close the door and get in with me.” “Love?” Kakashi asked lowering the poker and looking at the half asleep chuunin. “What are you doing here and why would I take a bath with you?” “Please don’t be upset with me, Shishi. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to bring you with me or get to you sooner or do a better job protecting you. I can understand if you’re reluctant after everything that was done to you, but it’s just the two of us here. The hot water and bath minerals will soothe your sore muscles and the steam will help your breathing.” Kakashi looked at the chuunin, not wanting to believe what the man was telling him. He sat on the closed toilet and processed the information. Iruka was the only one there. There was no rescue team, only Iruka. He had been rescued by Iruka. A chuunin had freed him from a dungeon and then led the enemy ninja right to him. At least the man had the sense to create a reasonable background and work it into the conversation. Apparently they were supposed to pretend to be lovers. He couldn’t say anything close to what he wanted to so he settled on, “Don’t call me Shishi.” “Would you prefer if I used your full name, young master? I’m sure your father and bastard he married you off to have men looking for you. I can imagine how happy they would be to find out your location.” Iruka stated pushing his hair behind his head while making the Konoha scout symbol for cover story. “Take a bath with me. I’ll massage some of the soreness out of your back and shoulders while the water works on the other areas.” Kakashi inhaled; this time there was no coughing fit. The steam had cleared his nostrils enough for him to recognize the bath salts Iruka was using smelled strongly of the therapeutic minerals used in the shinobi only bathhouses. He processed what Iruka had just told him. He was the young master who had been married off against his will to another man. He looked at the water and nodded. He didn’t smell like a dungeon so he was sure Iruka had bathed him, but even in the dim light he could see a thin layer of dirt covering his skin. “I’ll be back,” Iruka stated rising from the water and wrapping a towel around his mid-section. He picked up his dirty laundry and the pail he’d used to carry the kindling. “I’m going to get more wood for the fire.” Iruka removed the cold medicine from his pockets and read the both the label and Shibata-san’s dosing instructions. Civilian medication and ninja medications were different. Ninja’s highly evolved chakra systems generated a higher level of self healing than the untrained bodies of a civilian. Civilian medications were stronger and contained more additives to compensate for what a shinobi’s body did naturally. But humans were humans, ninja could take civilian formulas and vice versa. The standard dose when on a mission was half of a child’s dose. Iruka crushed a pill from each box, the standard adult dosage along with peppermint, tea leaves and lemongrass and let it steep in the hot water. When Iruka was gone Kakashi closed the door and relieved himself. Out of all people he’d been rescued by Iruka. He was a jounin. Jounin were not supposed to get caught. Jounin were not supposed to be rescued by lower ranking nin unless it was a genius like Shikamaru or a chakra powerhouse like Naruto and even then there should have been at least one other person backing them. He should not have been rescued by a solo chuunin on some other mission. He flushed comforted by the idea it was his own ninken that notified Iruka he was in trouble and lead Iruka to him. Iruka knocked on the door and waited until he was given the okay to open it. “I smell blood, you’re bleeding internally.” Kakashi eyes widened. He was expecting a comment about the scent, but it hadn’t been that one. He was about to make a smart assed retort when picked up on the man’s tone and looked at his face. The first time he saw Iruka looking like that the man was sitting at Sasuke’s beside when the boy was recovering from the cursed seal Orochimaru had given him. The other times also involved an injury to or mistake made by one of the chuunin’s former students. Kakashi had also worn that expression enough times after his own missions to recognize the unspoken questions – what could I have done differently? How could I have prevented this? It still seemed out of place on Iruka. “It’s okay. You did well. Acting rashly would have gotten you killed, and then who would I have to rescue me?” Kakashi wasn’t sure why he felt relieved when Iruka smiled. That warm fuzzy feeling dissipated when Iruka ordered him to strip so he could help him wash up. “I can do it myself,” Kakashi huffed. He knew better than to bend over with broken ribs so he pushed the bathing stool farther into the corner and slide down the wall before realizing he’d have to lift himself back up to remove his underwear. With all the dignity he could muster he regally stated, “I’ll allow you to assist me.” Iruka rolled his eyes and added more wood to the fire. He wrapped his arms around Kakashi and helped him up. He wrapped a towel around the man’s waist and removed the vexing material and lowered Kakashi onto the stool. Iruka hummed bits and pieces of popular songs while washing Kakashi’s hair, back, calves and feet, “I trust you can do the rest?” Kakashi grumpily took the towel. He didn’t listen to that type of music. If it had not been for Sakura and Gai he may would have missed those particular hints. The first song was about traveling documents for refugees, the second was about a banana plantation worker, the third was about a working for an unfair boss, the fourth he recognized as a theme from a children’s movie – a poor girl had won the heart of a prince. “I’m finished.” Kakashi squeaked when Iruka placed one hand behind his back and the other beneath his knees and lifted him straight up, no chakra, just a straight lift. Iruka’s laugh was rich in his ears and reverberated against his chest. “You squeaked. I didn’t know you could sound like that.” “It’s not that funny. You should warn someone when you do that.” Kakashi pouted as Iruka eased him into the large bath. “Please forgive me, your majesty,” Iruka bowed picking up the stool Kakashi had just been sitting on and sliding it over to the tub. “Please accept these humble foodstuffs as a token of your faithful servant Rui’s most sincere apology.” Kakashi watched as Iruka left the bathroom and returned with a tray containing tea, riceballs and gruel which he placed on the stool. He would have rolled his eyes had the motion not been so painful. “Do you expect me to eat in the bath?” “Why not?” Iruka asked dropping the towel and lowering himself into the tub. “You need to soak for a while if you want the bath salts to do you any good. You’ll probably fall asleep right after you get out, might as well eat while you’re awake.” Kakashi yawned unable to argue with that logic. He tried a spoonful of the gruel and drank some of the tea. Iruka was right he did have internal injuries from the repeated blows to his mid-section and wasn’t sure if his body could handle solid food yet. Surprisingly the gruel was good and familiar. “I tasted this when I woke up...” “I fed you while you were asleep. It had more fish broth so it was a thinner version of the same soup,” Iruka explained. “I see. It tastes good. I’ll have to see what I can do about always having you cook for me every time I don’t feel well.” Kakashi stated completely serious. Tsunade was always bitching about he never took care of himself and the fact he didn’t get nutritious meals when he left the hospital early or stupidly healed himself since ration bars didn’t count. He was certain she’d approve a mission for the gruel master to cook for his injured comrade. Iruka innocently nibbled on a rice ball while he watched Kakashi drink the tea and proclaimed it delicious. Belly full, Kakashi sank chin deep into the water, “How did you get these bath salts? They’re rather expensive.” “Your little sister brought them to me when she warned me I needed to get out of the village. She knew wasn’t accustomed to traveling and I might get homesick.” Iruka replied once again mixing in half truths. Sakura had given him the bath salts on the Hokage’s orders. Tsunade had developed the miracle formula before she left the village after Dan’s death. It repaired damaged muscles, helped clear poisons and impurities out of the body, opened breathing passages and disinfected cuts. “Little sister heh? I’ll have to thank’er’enIse’er’gain.” Kakashi mumbled his head going underwater as sleep and the decongestant overtook him. Iruka pulled Kakashi into his lap so the man’s back was against his chest and Kakashi’s head rested against his shoulder. He held both of Kakashi’s hands in his and began to release low levels of healing chakra knowing the water would act as a buffer against detection. It wasn’t long before he followed the man into sleep. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
