Sasuke was still stuffy, but his fever and muscle pains were completely gone. They thought they’d have a few more days, but in the middle of the night, they were wakened by rushed knocking. Sasuke had his night clothes on and rushed to the door.
Kakashi could hear a man say, “We have to go now.”
Sasuke hurried back into the bedroom and began to dress. “I’m being sent out. I don’t know how long I’ll be.” His gear was always ready, so it didn’t take very long for him to prepare. He came over to where Kakashi was sitting on the edge of the bed. He kissed his lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
And Sasuke was gone.
Kakashi guessed that it had to be the situation in the Wind Country. Nothing else could call the last Uchiha out while he was sick. He was nearly completely well, but Tsunade wouldn’t send him out if he was still not feeling at his best.
They hadn’t had sex. Kakashi had been patient and respectful that Sasuke didn’t want to have sex while sick. His balls were officially blue. It was a really bad time to be lamenting monogamy with Sasuke having agonized over his possible infidelity.
Kakashi lay back down and snuggled into Sasuke’s pillow. It did smell of him a bit.
Being woken, Kakashi couldn’t get back to sleep. He turned onto his back. With a frustrated groan, he grabbed the lube and pushed down his boxers.
This was his one chance to, in a way, “cheat” on Sasuke. In his own thoughts he could revisit past partners, women he never bedded, that woman in Suna who stepped out of the Icha Icha novels and smelled like a sex crazed female.
His mind went first to the soft, smooth, supple breasts. There was some fragrance of milk natural to a woman’s skin. Maybe that was purely psychological, but he remembered that smell. Her clean skin had no taste but would mist with salty sweat as they grew more heated. The smell of his own saliva coating much of her luxurious flesh made the fantasy more real.
The smell of her wetness was heavy in his memory. He was salivating. The smell and taste were something he loved. His friends—and some of his lovers—would find it funny that his face was still covered during sex, just not by a mask.
Then he remembered how it felt to be inside a woman. The faceless fantasy woman felt like silk. So wet, so warm, so smooth. But not very tight. The moan he elicited from her was deep. Deep as in male.
Kakashi’s hand tightened around his cock and that loose, wet tunnel grew tighter and hotter. He was closer to completion now that his lover was male. The scent that filled his nose was no longer that sweet scent of a woman, but the musk of a male. Those sighs just as thready, but deeper, threatening to become growls.
Those strong thighs grew stronger. The flat stomach became chiseled. Grudgingly, he climaxed to thoughts of Sasuke’s pale, muscular body rather than a fantasy woman or a memory of one. He growled at his own climax. His one chance to have an orgasm not revolving around Sasuke and he couldn’t get away from thoughts of him.
It had been a while since he last had sex. It only took minutes of thinking about Sasuke sucking him off to reawaken his erection. So, he went about planning what he was going to do to Sasuke when he returned.
-----
Sasuke and his team reached the safe house near the border between The Wind County and The Land of Valleys. It was sadly becoming home. Again, the first thing he did when he arrived was check the larder. No ramen. No one had restocked the safe house since they last stayed here.
He joined his teammates in the communal sleeping chamber.
“We have almost no food. I’ll go into the nearby town.”
“Hara will go with you.”
Sasuke nodded and Hara groaned as he got up to join him. As soon as they were topside, they transformed into the plainest looking civilians they could. They split off to different stores. Sasuke bought a large bag of rice that he fake struggled to carry over his shoulder, then also bought a bucket of miso and a few gallons of clean water that he carried on either end of a thick branch on his shoulder. He also bought several cups of instant ramen.
Hara joined him outside of town with more water, dried fish, and bag of various vegetables. Sasuke checked behind them with his Sharingan several times to make sure they weren’t being followed back to their bolt hole. They were in the clear.
As they unpacked their supplies, Hara laughed at the ramen. “It’s not Konoha ramen, but it will do.”
“We might be here awhile,” Sasuke shrugged. “We need some kind of comfort of home.”
“Well, if you want to knock boots . . .”
Sasuke playfully glared at him.
-----
Kakashi was finishing up breakfast when someone knocked on his door. Not ring the bell on the outer gate. He rushed to the door, figuring that it must be urgent to trespass on the Uchiha’s property.
It was Genma.
“I thought you should know: someone sent Tsunade a package. They claim Sasuke’s been killed and sent proof.”
Kakashi’s heart leapt, but in the sick way. He rushed passed Genma and used his experience with his new leg to leap up to the rooftops like he used to and ran to the Hokage tower.
Kakashi used his ANBU short range teleportation to enter Tsunade’s office despite the windows being closed. “You have news about Sasuke?”
“How did you hear about that?”
“Do you?”
“We were sent a letter and two items the writer claims are proof Sasuke’s dead.”
“Let me see them.” His voice was shaking.
There was nothing to do against a lover’s determination and the protective nature of a hound. Tsunade stood and led Kakashi to the room where they were keeping the package. On a table was the letter, the packaging, and two disturbing items: a Konoha headband and a torn piece of cloth with the Uchiha symbol on it.
Kakashi’s heart just sank.
He stepped closer and relief rushed through him. The headband wasn’t Sasuke’s; he said as much.
“What?”
“This is black. We traded headbands; I gave him my blue headband and I have his black one.” He didn’t have time to put it on, but he knew it was on his dresser. “Only very few know we traded headbands. The ANBU who came with us on our vacation teased Sasuke about it, as did Sasuke’s team. I don’t know of any others who knew. Naruto doesn’t even know; I’d have heard about that.”
He picked up the torn cloth with the Uchiha symbol on it. He sniffed it. “No scent. Just detergent; laundered. If Sasuke was in a fight, he’d sweat and leave his scent on the cloth, but there’s nothing. No blood either. Sasuke doesn’t usually wear his crest on missions; it’s a literal target on his back. He does carry one shirt with his crest on certain missions when he thinks it will benefit him as a distraction or intimidation, but he doesn’t keep it in his kit and I help him pack and it was waiting for a week. This could have been stolen from his dresser though. Nevertheless, this is a hoax.”
Kakashi’s complete relief and confidence convinced Tsunade that it wasn’t denial but fact.
Kakashi picked up the black headband and examined it. “It’s brand new. Sasuke’s good, but even his has scuffs on it. There’s no hair or grass or seeds in the fabric. This has never been worn. I don’t know if this is a malicious prank or someone trying to provoke me or Naruto into going out there and leading them to Sasuke.”
“I’m glad I tried to keep it quiet; Naruto would be out there faster than you.”
“Better get word to him before he finds out like I did.”
“How did you find out?”
“Genma came and told me.”
“I should have known.” Genma was one of her bodyguards. ANBU wasn’t always the ones guarding her; Genma and Raido were among her jounin guards and errand boys.
He read the letter. ‘Your precious Uchiha bloodline is dead.’ “That’s it?”
“Yeah, it was rather brief.”
“Who did you suspect?”
Tsunade hesitated. “Taki.”
“The same ones who came for the bounty.”
“Yeah.”
“Don’t send any support for a while. They might be spying on the gates.”
“I’ve already had the Hyuuga checking the area.”
“Does he need support?”
“We’ve not received a report and we don’t expect one for a few more days. We’ve had no indication there’s been trouble.”
“I wish you could recall them. I know this is a hoax, but it makes me anxious.”
“I can get word to someone who can check in on them. I was going to do it anyway with this claim. Don’t worry about him; he’s an Uchiha after all.”
-----
Weary, Sasuke and his team reported in to Tsunade. She never said a word about his supposed death. He was looking forward to getting home and showering. And sleep. He might have wanted food if he wasn’t too starved and tired to be hungry.
They weren’t nearly killed this time; they just worked their asses off, getting little sleep. At least they accomplished a great deal.
Sasuke also wasn’t used to killing people. He’d been doing a lot of killing since he joined this new team. He didn’t lose sleep over it; it was just something he didn’t enjoy. He had sworn he would only kill his brother. Itachi died of disease and exhaustion from fighting him and Sasuke knew he couldn’t live as a shinobi without killing.
Normally, if someone needed killing, Hara took over. Sasuke and Akihito were not typically the quietest or most subtle killers. The Chidori was named for the noise it made and Akihito’s style was showy at best. Mori’s skills lay elsewhere. Yet, they all did their part.
They’d just left fifty-seven rogue Suni shinobi and two dozen Taki shinobi dead in their makeshift base. They hadn’t slept since those shinobi died. Nor had they bathed. He still had blood spatter on his neck and arms. He probably had smears on his face and in his hair.
He staggered into his house and dropped his gear behind the sofa. He was heading to the shower when Kakashi came out of the bedroom and just pulled him to him.
“I hope you’re in the mood; otherwise, I’m afraid I’ll have to rape you.” Despite his words, Kakashi just held his lover tightly in his arms.
“Hi.”
“Hi.” He kissed Sasuke. “You left me with a considerable case of blue balls. I intend to prevent that in the future.”
“Not like I wasn’t in a similar state. But I need a shower first.”
Kakashi was about to object, but he leaned in to sniff Sasuke. “You are a bit ripe.” Kakashi didn’t miss the metallic tang of blood.
Sasuke playfully shoved him. He resumed his journey to the bathroom. Kakashi followed and stripped, changing to his plain metal stick of a leg. He hadn’t traveled half way across the country without bathing, but he couldn’t stay away from his naked lover right now.
Once in the shower, Sasuke just wanted to luxuriate under clean water for a while. Kakashi took the soap and started washing Sasuke’s neck; it was more a massage really. He slowly rubbed the suds into Sasuke’s tendons and across his hairline. He continued this treatment down to his shoulders, then his upper arms, down his back, giving him a rub down the whole time. He ended that venture with his soapy fingers rubbing down between Sasuke’s ass cheeks.
He lathered up his hands again and raised Sasuke’s arms to clean under them and down his arms and sides. A fresh lather and he reached around to Sasuke’s front, cleaning his chiseled chest and defined abs. It was hard work with the showerhead pouring water down his body.
Kakashi glanced down to see the red tainted water swirling down the drain. He was relieved that none of it appeared to be Sasuke’s; his roving hands hadn’t found any wounds.
Another fresh lather and Kakashi started on Sasuke’s limp cock. Sasuke wasn’t aroused yet, just enjoying the attention and the rub down. Kakashi was remedying that. He fondled his balls with the pretense of cleaning them, but he was really rolling them in his hand. He paid a lot of attention to his taint, pressing against it to stimulate his prostate.
His hand then gripped his hardening cock. He used his hand as he would when jacking off his own cock. That was certainly working on the young Uchiha.
His upper body all clean, Kakashi abandoned it and started on his hair, massaging his scalp while he was at it.
That done, Sasuke washed his own face while Kakashi quickly shampooed his own hair. Sasuke kept his back turned while he bent over to wash his legs. Kakashi froze seeing that. Sasuke truly was a beauty. Every part of him.
Sasuke straightened and turned to Kakashi. He soaped up Kakashi’s chest and gave him a rub down as well. He spent a little more time ‘washing’ Kakashi’s nipples than Kakashi did with his.
Deciding that a complete repeat of Kakashi’s ministrations would take too long, Sasuke created a clone who stood behind Kakashi and washed his back while Sasuke cleaned Kakashi’s stomach and his arms. The clone did his back but was too shy to rub between Kakashi’s ass cheeks the way Kakashi had.
He knelt to wash Kakashi’s legs since it was harder for the older man without a real, stable leg to balance with.
Oh, that was not fair. He was neglecting his upper thighs and cock. Thankfully, Sasuke did finally work his way back up to his thighs, his hips, even around to his ass, then finally to his cock, balls, and taint.
“You better stand up soon.”
Sasuke looked up and gave him a seductive smile past an angry erection, but he did stand up.
They dried off in record time. Sasuke pressed against him for a kiss. Their erections rubbed together, their nipples grazing against the other’s chest.
Kakashi pulled back to ask, “Suck me off?”
Sasuke pushed Kakashi back so he sat on the bed. Sasuke grabbed the lube and applied a little to his lips. Kakashi knew from his own experience how dry and chapped one’s lips could get. Sasuke took Kakashi’s hard on into his mouth. He started with simple bobbing that was anything but simple. The added artificial lubrication aided the silken slide of Sasuke’s lips. His tongue undulated and moved against the underside of his cock. And that delicious suction. Creating suction made his cheeks pull in and the velvet of his inner cheeks were sliding against the sides of his cock. The head of his cock moved against Sasuke’s hard palate then pressed into the vaginal like wall of his soft palate. He could even feel the bean shaped epiglottis glide over him as Sasuke tried to modulate his breathing.
Kakashi groaned and leaned back on his left hand. His right hand went to the back of Sasuke’s head and gently mused the damp duck tail.
As Sasuke pleasured his lover with his mouth, he worked on the strap for his false leg with one hand. It fell away with a soft thunk.
Sasuke’s teeth closed ever so gently on Kakashi’s erection. He kept the contact light enough that it was a tantalizing scrape rather than a painful jabbing. Sasuke varied how far back he moved. Some were short strokes; his lips never reaching the head of Kakashi’s cock. Others completely came off his cock, dragging his lips and teeth over the flare and down the head. When lips or teeth pulled over the sensitive flare, Kakashi felt it deep in his abdomen and made his balls tighten.
Sasuke could tell when Kakashi was getting close. He switched tactics. He deep-throated him. Kakashi felt the head of his cock penetrate the entrance of his throat. The soft flesh of the back of his throat rubbed the tip of his cock. Sasuke swallowed, making his throat muscles convulse around him.
Kakashi’s hand tightened on the back of Sasuke’s head, restricting his movement. Sasuke stayed still and continued to swallow and move his tongue. He opened his mouth a little to allow the wet sounds of his throat moving against Kakashi’s cock to escape. This added nothing to the experience physically but hearing that sound and looking down to see Sasuke’s black eyes looking back at him as he made those noises brought Kakashi even closer to orgasm.
Fuck. Looking down reminded him of the fact of just who he had between his legs, just whose mouth was sucking on his cock. That was his undoing.
Kakashi’s breath hitched right before his orgasm, giving Sasuke enough time to pull back and catch all the semen in his mouth rather than have it pumped straight down his throat. Kakashi’s grip had tightened further as he came, but Sasuke was strong enough to resist that restraining hand.
Kakashi collapsed back after the last spurt of cum landed on Sasuke’s tongue. Sasuke tightened his lips to scrape semen and saliva from Kakashi’s softened organ. He swallowed the whole load in one gulp.
Sasuke’s right hand had loitered on Kakashi’s lower thigh after he removed the fake leg. His right had steadied him on Kakashi’s right calf. Now he caressed Kakashi’s thigh as he cleaned Kakashi’s cock. Kakashi was laid out on his back breathing heavily.
Sasuke slowly climbed up to lay on Kakashi’s damp body. His erection was hot against Kakashi’s half hard length. Kakashi turned his head to capture Sasuke’s lips and kiss him. He used both hands to press Sasuke’s mouth harder against his. He liked to kiss Sasuke after an orgasm; his lips were more sensitive and the endorphins made him love Sasuke even more in those moments. Even his tongue was more sensitive; the rubbing of the rough tongue sent electricity down his body.
The erection throbbing against his body reminded him that he had a duty to his lover. Sasuke helped get him hard enough to fuck him. Sasuke fingered Kakashi’s heavy balls. He used only enough pressure to make it pleasurable, careful not to cause any pain.
Kakashi slid his hand down Sasuke’s back to his ass and sought out his hole. It was wet.
“When did you do that?” Kakashi asked against Sasuke’s lips.
“I can multitask.”
“How could I miss such a sight?”
“You were preoccupied. Your eyes were closed most of the time.”
Honestly, Kakashi couldn’t remember when his eyes were open or closed. Sasuke appeared to have had his eyes open and looking up at him.
It had been quite some time since they’d had sex, so Kakashi took his time prepping him as his erection reawakened. Sasuke started to writhe against his body, rubbing his cock against Kakashi’s hip. Sasuke’s hand moved to Kakashi’s side, unable to do anything involving an ounce of thought. He was beyond horny at this point. He was desperate. Kakashi could feel the precum oozing from his cock.
“If you don’t fuck me soon, I’ll just jack off and sleep on the sofa.”
“I love you too.”
Kakashi shifted Sasuke onto the bed, on his back. He looked down at Sasuke’s erection and was impressed just how red and wet it was. He was ready to burst. He was prepared to believe the slickness in Sasuke’s body was natural. A bitch in heat. Kakashi smiled at himself; talk about the pot and kettle; he was as much in heat as Sasuke was.
True to his masturbation fantasy the night Sasuke left, Sasuke was hotter and tighter than any woman could hope to be. He groaned as his cock slid into that tight, wet heat. The groan was almost a sigh of relief. He knew now that he could not live without him. Right now, that only held a sexual meaning, but it was true outside of sex as well. But right now, it was that body that held sway in his heart.
He leaned over Sasuke’s body and Sasuke put his hands on Kakashi’s back and stroked him. Sasuke could feel Kakashi’s cock grow to its full hardness.
Kakashi lifted his head to look into Sasuke’s eyes. He started moving with slow, controlled thrusts. But that couldn’t last. Soon he was thrusting hard into Sasuke’s tight body. Sasuke’s hands fell from his back to fall around his head. The wanton look on Sasuke’s face, his mussed hair, and his hands helpless on the pillow fed his lust. He rearranged Sasuke’s legs, pushing his left leg up, his right thigh lay out to the side to give him full access to his hips.
The violent thrusts rocked Sasuke’s body up and down so that their bodies met with force, pushing Kakashi’s cock deeper against Sasuke’s prostate.
Sasuke was trying to participate, but he couldn’t even keep pace to tighten up at key moments. He just wanted to come. Sasuke was in sublime agony. He was frustrated, desperate to come. The pounding of his insides and the friction growing between them was also causing some pain. Nevertheless, he was so close, he was enrapt in pleasure. Yet he needed release.
Sasuke grabbed Kakashi’s shoulder with one hand; the other couldn’t find purchase with the violent rocking of their bodies. He scratched at Kakashi’s ear, shoulder, and bicep before fisting his left hand.
Sasuke cried out as his orgasm ripped through him. His body jerked several times, his ass clinching. The cry was cut off by several gasps. He sank back, his hand falling from Kakashi’s shoulder.
Kakashi pushed Sasuke’s left thigh closer to his chest and moved as fast as he dared, trying to finish. Sasuke had loosened, but his body was still hot and very wet. He released Sasuke’s leg and leaned over him. A few more long, forceful thrusts and he came with several grunts deep inside his lover.
Kakashi panted over Sasuke, relishing the moment of release. Damn, that was intense. He shouldn’t be this out of breath. It was pretty bad when sex was the most intense physically activity he did. The sweat on his face was about to start dripping down onto his lover. He wiped his face and finally looked down. To see that Sasuke was fast asleep. He froze in guilt. Sasuke was freshly back from a mission; Kakashi barely gave him a moment to rest before fucking him. It was selfish to insist they have sex immediately.
And when was the last time he ate? It wasn’t uncommon for shinobi to skip a meal or two on the way home to get home faster. Sasuke was probably starving. Semen wasn’t very filling.
As if Sasuke’s stomach was conscious of Kakashi’s thoughts, it growled. Sasuke probably just wanted a quick shower, a meal, and twelve hours of sleep.
He slipped out of Sasuke’s body and crawled back. Cum sprayed on Sasuke’s abs, his face pale, shiny, and relaxed. Kakashi stroked Sasuke’s face. He didn’t even flinch. He lay his hand on his cheek and caressed the skin under his eye with his thumb and played his fingers in the short hair behind his ear. His hand followed a path down his chest to his stomach.
Kakashi moved to lick Sasuke’s stomach clean, lapping up Sasuke’s cum. Then he gently sucked and tongued his limp cock, cleaning it too. He pulled the bedding over them both and let Sasuke sleep.
-----
Sasuke woke up but didn’t stir. His body felt heavy, his muscles like taut ropes. He had a headache and his insides burned. But he was warm and comfortable not moving. A moan from his own throat startled him.
Kakashi sucked in a breath and stretched next to him. He pulled Sasuke into his arms and softly cradled his head in his hand. “I love you so very much.”
“I love you too.”
Kakashi hummed and just held him. “Sorry for pushing you into sex last night.”
“You didn’t push me.”
“Yeah I did. You’ve never fallen asleep during sex before; you were exhausted. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I needed to get laid.”
“I stayed home for the last two weeks waiting for you to come home.”
“What?” He raised his head to look at Kakashi’s face.
Kakashi eased him back down. “I had enough food stocked up. I wanted to be here when you got home; they said you were dead.”
“What?” Sasuke’s head popped up again.
Kakashi explained the package and how he saw through the hoax. Sasuke moved back to look at Kakashi’s face as he told the story. “But it made me anxious,” Kakashi concluded.
Kakashi could see Sasuke’s mind racing, trying to figure out who had done this. “Don’t worry your pretty little head over it,” Kakashi said. “In fact, I think I might have been the target, not you or the village. I think someone was trying to get to me. There’s really only one way to do that now.” He squeezed Sasuke’s side.
Sasuke’s body grew stiff. “Someone wants to “get to” you?”
“I didn’t mean sexually.”
“No difference. No one fucks with what’s mine.”
“I belong to you now?” Kakashi asked with humor.
“Yes.”
“That goes in reverse too, right?”
“Of course.”
-----
Sasuke wasn’t going to let it go. Someone had tried to get to Kakashi through him. He couldn’t let a thing like that slide. He voraciously ate a large breakfast then left, saying something about an errand.
Tsunade looked up from her paperwork. She was startled to see Sasuke standing in the center of her office. “Uchiha!”
“Weren’t you going tell me?”
“I knew Kakashi would.”
“Who sent it?”
“We haven’t determined.”
“Kakashi didn’t pick up a scent.”
“On the package, no. I think too many people handled it. The items inside, he was quite clear on. I doubt an Inuzuka could have done better.”
“How was it delivered?”
“Shinobi, definitely. It was left on the table of the gate guard during shift change. They totally missed it.”
Sasuke didn’t express the fact he didn’t think it such a high bar to get something past a bunch of chunin assigned gate duty. “Let me see it.”
The Hokage wasn’t used to taking orders, but she got up and took Sasuke down to the ANBU evidence room. Sasuke didn’t move his head in the slightest, but his eyes flicked over everything in his field of view. Kakashi had recommended he not join ANBU so this was the first view he got of ANBU headquarters. He took in every bit of information his eyes could detect before focusing on the package.
He didn’t have Kakashi’s nose, but even with Kakashi’s Sharingan, Kakashi didn’t have his eyes.
The wrapping was butcher’s paper. The twine was ordinary too. There wasn’t a hair on it. Not a bit of vegetation. The letter’s paper was plain.
“If this was brought from outside Konoha, it was carefully transported. There’re no fibers on the twine to signify it was wrapped. Kakashi would have smelled leather, metal, or weapon oil if it was carried in a weapon pouch. Everything could have been purchased here. The brand-new headband must be from our own shinobi supply store.”
He took out the headband and placed it on the table and smoothed out the fabric. “Kakashi’s right, not a hair. The steel is smooth and there’s not even a smudge. The imprint doesn’t have any dirt or oil in it, just the original black imprint wax.”
He folded up the headband and laid out the scrap of cloth with his family crest on it. Anger bubbled inside him. “This is one of mine. Someone snuck into my home and stole from me.” Was Kakashi out? Or was he sleeping? Was someone able to get into the same room as his sleeping lover? Was there a shinobi able to sneak into their bedroom without waking Kakashi?
“This is one of mine,” he repeated. “This wasn’t some Taki chunin. Or even a Suni jounin. This was a Konoha shinobi. This was a Konoha jounin.” He sucked on his teeth. “Not a scent on it. Kakashi only smelled detergent. And it wasn’t fresh. This is a jounin at least.”
He folded the cloth. “Did Kakashi share with you his theory that he might have been the target of this package?”
“No.”
“What’s the best way to get to a man? Go after his lover. Or threaten his lover.”
“Kakashi’s the target?”
“Maybe. But when you go after Kakashi, you come after me. They violated my home. Kakashi thinks he’s the target; I think I am. I’m sure he still has enemies out there; people who want him dead. But in Konoha? Where he is respected? No. I’m the one with enemies in Konoha. They broke into my home.”
“Uchiha, no burning down the village.”
“Burn down the house to get rid of a rodent? I’m not a man driven to madness; I’m a hawk, a cat, a snake, looking for a rat.”
“I can’t let you free reign in looking for a prankster.”
“They broke into my home.”
“It’s a cruel hoax. Kakashi was obviously not home or he would have known someone was in the house. It’s just someone trying to get under your skin.”
“It’s working.”
“Sasuke, leave it.”
Sasuke actually growled, but he knew her use of his name was an appeal. “I’m tempted to ask for ANBU protection of my property when I’m absent.”
“Kakashi would be insulted.”
“I know. I don’t need any more damage to his pride.” Sasuke tilted his head back, closed his eyes and took a deep breath through his nose. “Let it be known, I have no patience for pranks. I will defer to you, Hokage.”
He turned to look at the blonde. His eyes skimmed over everything in that corner of the room. “I’m glad I’ve waited to have a child. If I must worry this much about my shinobi lover, I would be a nervous wreck over the safety of a child. This is my home village; I shouldn’t have to fear. This should be a safe place to raise my children. It doesn’t end.” He closed his eyes and took another breath. “There is no way to track this prankster. We only know it’s a skilled Konoha shinobi.”
“Sasuke, on my honor, I will protect my shinobi.”
“Considering it was one of your predecessors who ordered the massacre of my clan, forgive me if I can’t put all my faith in you. I believe you want to protect us, but I just don’t believe you can. I can’t entrust my family and clan to you.”
“I can understand that. Even if you can’t depend on me, know I’ll do my best.”
“I appreciate it. Now I need to find an excuse for being out and get home; Kakashi doesn’t need to know I’m worried.”
“I’m sure he’ll know anyway.”
Shizune came to the open door with a scroll. “A message from the Kazakage,” she said. “I thought you might want to see it immediately since Sasuke’s here.”
Tsunade took the scroll, read it, then handed it to Sasuke. He read it faster than the Hokage.
“Thoughts?” she prompted.
“If the rebels have left the border regions, it might mean they lost the support of Taki or it could mean we have to worry about fighting them on two fronts. They must have headed northwest. We’ll have to track them.”
“I’m not sending your team. Your team is not a scouting team.”
Sasuke nodded. “A Hyuuga would be best.”
She was glad Sasuke wasn’t miffed. “You are due time off anyway, especially with Akihito’s family. And I suspect it would be best for you and Kakashi to have a little time together before you head out again.”
“Map of the Wind Country.” An ANBU held out a map to him. Sasuke opened the map on the table, disregarding the prank package now. “Most likely places for new bases are here, here, and here,” he said as he circled points on the map. “There are rock outcroppings along here. That’s all the information I have on possible bases. Mori seems to have a good lay of the land in the Wind Country. Summon my team now so you can send the tracking team as soon as possible.”
Tsunade didn’t mind Sasuke giving orders; rather she was glad that the shift in topics seemed to fully shift Sasuke’s thoughts and mood. Sasuke followed Tsunade back to her office after she gave orders for Mori, Hara, and Akihito to report to her.
They were quickly brought up to speed.
“The cliffs are too obvious,” Mori said. “But you can’t just make a base in sand.”
“They’re natives,” Sasuke said. “They might know how deep the bedrock is beneath the sand. When you have sand jutsus, you can open the dunes down to the bedrock.”
Akihito stood silently, thinking.
“There is more fertile land in the far north of the country,” Hara said. “There are more places to hide and less sand.”
“But also, more shinobi and civilians,” Sasuke countered.
“Sasuke, have you been to the western region?” Akihito asked.
“I’ve not been further west than Suna.” He looked unhappy that he couldn’t say he knew that region.
“Mori?”
“I’ve been to the capital, that’s in the west. I’ve never gotten close to the border.”
“That’s a little far from their Taki support; if they still have Taki support,” Hara pointed out.
Sasuke narrowed his eyes. “But if the rebels have support in the capital . . . political support . . .”
“Well, none of that is helpful,” Tsunade sighed. “So my tracking unit has to hunt all over the Wind Country. I should have stuck to Sasuke’s suggestion.”
“Just send a dozen Hyuuga to comb the country,” Sasuke said blithely.
“With actual combs,” Hara added.
Sasuke was the only one who let the corner of his lips curl slightly in an attempt at a smile.
“Get out,” Tsunade sighed.
Hara smiled at the affect he always had on his Hokage. “A giant Zen garden!” Hara exclaimed as the four shinobi left her office.
In the corridor, Hara ended his larky act. “Do you think Taki is pulling their support?”
“No,” Akihito said. “Chaos in the Wind Country is valuable to Taki, no matter which side wins. They won’t do anything to threaten the continuation of this little civil war.”
-----
Sasuke wandered out into the sunlight, reevaluating the wisdom of staying in Konoha. As quickly as his ongoing mission for Suna pushed his other problems from his thoughts, they returned once he could do no more about it.
The village streets were lively, but not crowded during midday. He intended just a walk to think, but that wasn’t possible when Naruto was around.
The blond called out to him and ran toward him. “You’re home.”
“Obviously, dobe.”
Naruto just smiled at the light insult. “Did you just get back?”
“Yesterday.”
“You’ve been going on a lot of long missions.”
“All S rank recently. What about you?”
“A’s. Not as many as you. You always seem to be gone.”
“We got more time off at the beginning because my captain has a family, but . . . We’ve been in high demand. I do fear I’m the reason Akihito doesn’t see his family as much anymore.”
“So, everything’s going well with your new team?”
Sasuke smirked. “Yeah. I haven’t tried to kill any of them. Yet.”
Naruto laughed.
“Though one wants in my pants. He knows better than to really try and he joked about it with Kakashi. But if he thinks he has a shot, he might be the first I attempt to kill.”
Sasuke’s tone was light, so despite the fact Sasuke really tried to kill all the members of his former team, Naruto laughed again. In fact, as long as Sasuke’s expression wasn’t dark, Naruto was just happy to see his friend. He would laugh at the most morbid joke as long as Sasuke was here and not plotting to kill half the village.
“Kakashi will do that first,” Naruto said.
“You’re right. He catches a sniff of anyone else on me, he’ll track them down and eviscerate him.”
“Oh, yeah?” Naruto threw his arms around Sasuke who froze in the embrace.
Kakashi was suspicious of Sasuke’s lone errand so he took a walk to find him. He froze when he saw Naruto hugging Sasuke. His stomach sank because that was what he feared might happen. Naruto was Sasuke’s age and his friend; Naruto was so devoted to finding and saving Sasuke for years. They were a much better match than he and Sasuke.
But then Sasuke struggled from Naruto’s grip and Kakashi noted how Sasuke nearly shuddered in repletion at being touched.
“Don’t do that, Naruto,” Kakashi read Sasuke’s lips.
“Why not?”
“I don’t really like being touched. I especially don’t like my arms being restrained.”
“Sorry. I guess that makes sense; you don’t relax.”
“It’s not a matter of relaxing. Being touched makes my skin crawl.”
“Really? What about with Kakashi?”
Kakashi was heartened by Sasuke’s blush. “He’s different. His touch . . . doesn’t hurt. I think I’m overly sensitive due to how I lived my life for several years. I trust him enough that I know he’s not a threat.”
“But I am?”
“I’m not around you nearly as much as I’m around him. Anyway, you know about the news of my death?”
“Yeah, Kakashi told me so that if I heard about it, I’d know it was fake.”
“You have any idea who might have sent it?”
“None.”
“You hear anything, let me know?”
“I’ll tell you.”
“Thanks.”
Naruto hugged him again, clinging to him tighter than before. He was more careful not to touch Sasuke’s skin and slipped one of his arms under Sasuke’s so one arm wasn’t restrained. The result was a little less stiffness in Sasuke’s form.
Kakashi decided to reveal his presence. He came up behind Sasuke, yanked the collar of his shirt to dislodge his lover from Naruto. He put his arms around Sasuke’s waist, put his head on Sasuke’s shoulder, and pouted. “Mine,” he said in a mockingly dark tone.
Sasuke was startled, but not caught off guard enough to automatically attack or defend; he allowed his lover to grab him. He turned his head to look at Kakashi with an annoyed expression, but Naruto could see the corners of his mouth were struggling to rise.
“Are you following me?” Sasuke asked.
“Not at all.”
“Liar.”
Kakashi didn’t think Naruto could miss the near purr in the word; he certainly didn’t.
Genma came out of the tower. “Hey, Sasuke, glad to see you aren’t dead.”
Kakashi let go of Sasuke.
“You too.”
Genma leered at them. “I’m liking this scenario. You said no to a threesome, but a foursome?”
“Fuck off,” Kakashi sighed. He put an arm around Sasuke and pulled him close.
“Jealous?” Genma asked.
“Of course.”
“As flattering at this is, I’m not a piece of meat,” Sasuke complained and moved out of Kakashi’s grasp.
“And I’m feeling left out,” Naruto added.
“Oh, you wouldn’t be, blondie.”
“Since when are you gay?” Raido asked from behind him.
“I’m not, but fuck, you see that?” He pointed at Sasuke’s face.
“Stop perving on kids a dozen years younger than you. And don’t perv too much on those two; hounds are protective.”
“Mine,” Kakashi said again.
“See. Hey, Kakashi,” he greeted.
“Raido,” Kakashi answered.
“Perving on guys seem to be safer. I haven’t been getting drinks thrown in my face or slapped.”
“Who all have you been perving on?” Sasuke asked ominously.
“Ahhhhhh, no one.”
Sasuke looked at Kakashi.
“I’m not incriminating my friend,” Kakashi said.
Genma put an arm over Kakashi’s shoulders in a friendly hug. “Awe, thanks man.”
Sasuke nearly growled. Genma had his arm off Kakashi’s person really quick. Genma couldn’t stop leering at Sasuke though.
Sasuke’s expression changed. It became sultry. “Do you really think you can handle me?”
The eyes of all four men turned to saucers.
“Kakashi once bested me, put me into the ground. Literally. If you can best me, if you can put me to the ground, you can have me.”
Kakashi laughed heartily.
“You think you can defeat me in a one on one fight?”
“Fuck that,” Genma sighed.
“Good choice,” Raido said.
Despite Kakashi and Sasuke’s possessiveness and apparent hostility, they all felt at ease. Genma and Raido accepted their relationship and Kakashi and Sasuke were comfortable joking about it. Sasuke was at ease.
The ugly whispers, disdainful glances, and sneers that floated behind the pair when their relationship was first rumored had dissipated. Genma had been one of their staunchest defenders. Considering how Genma normally relieved stress, their relationship seemed the height of innocence. It helped that Sasuke was in no way acting like a blushing bride, but as much the jealous husband as Kakashi. This all really seemed like brotherly ribbing; they might not be in a relationship at all. That made Naruto relax into the atmosphere. There was nothing mean or sincerely sexual about the way they talked. He freely laughed at the banter.
Though Genma might have peed his pants just a little.
Kakashi was still laughing. “And to think I was straight before you.” He put a hand around the back of Sasuke’s head and pulled his forehead to his lips.
Genma gestured to Kakashi and looked at Raido, silently saying ‘See?!’
“Come on, Genma, we have errands to run for the Hokage,” Raido said.
“Wait,” Sasuke said, taking a step from Kakashi’s grasp. “You know about the claim of my death?”
“I’m the one who told him,” Genma answered, gesturing to Kakashi.
“Any idea who brought it?”
“None.”
“Keep an ear out.”
“We will.” Genma saluted his goodbye.
“Ramen?” Naruto asked.
“Sure,” Sasuke said with a sigh that wasn’t convincing.
-----
Sasuke felt he had to do something. He was under orders not to burn the village down, but he still needed to try to find out who tried to make Kakashi think he was dead.
Sasuke wore his black cloak today. It wasn’t all that cold, but he felt like hiding in it.
The shinobi supply shop was really the only thing he had to go on. There were several weapon shops, but there was only one in the village that sold uniforms and headbands. Sasuke came here once he was reactivated as a Konoha shinobi but hadn’t found it necessary since.
The same dispassionate old man kept the shop every day. Sasuke hoped he would remember individual customers.
“What do you need?” he asked without any enthusiasm.
“Has anyone purchased a black headband recently?”
“Eh? Why do you want to know that?”
“Can you tell me?”
“No. Do you know how many headbands I sell every day?”
“Can’t be that many; headbands tend to last years.”
“Well, it’s too many for me to keep track of. I don’t keep records of those things either.”
Sasuke shrugged. He turned to leave.
“You’re not going to buy anything?”
“No. I just wanted to know who bought a black headband in the last month.”
The shopkeeper snorted.
It was a long shot anyway, Sasuke thought as he left. He had no other leads. He just wished he knew how they got one of his shirts. He hoped Kakashi had been out when it happened. The idea of someone sneaking in while his lover slept . . . Kakashi did sleep heavier nowadays. Not needing to be on guard during missions was letting Kakashi sleep deeper. He was glad Kakashi could sleep sounder, but he also regretted the loss of such a formidable shinobi. So much raw talent gone to waste.
He had believed that at least Kakashi was safe, that his life wouldn’t be in danger while he was retired. He had believed that.
He’d put Kakashi’s life in danger because of their connection. He’d shamed him and now put him in danger. He was worried that he’d messed up Kakashi’s life. Granted Kakashi was really depressed after his injury and their relationship had definitely perked him up. He couldn’t deny that.
Sasuke got lost in his dark musings, walking automatically toward home. He wasn’t fully unaware of his surroundings—he was a shinobi and a former outlaw—but he didn’t give anything around him any regard.
Kakashi wasn’t home yet; he’d gone to sniff out any information on the hoax from the jounin and former ANBU he knew. Sasuke fell into the sofa. He just sat there and stared into space thinking about Kakashi’s wellbeing.
His thoughts were interrupted again by the ringing of the bell. He got up and went to the gate to see who was bothering him.
“Sasuke-sama, Fumihiro wishes to have a meeting with you tomorrow about your clan.”
Fumihiro, the head of clan affairs in Konoha. He’d spoken briefly with the man when he returned to the village, establishing him as the head of the Uchiha clan—for whatever that was worth.
“Understood.” He took the offered paper with the appointment on it.
Sasuke went back inside with a severe case of heartburn growing in his chest.
Sasuke hid everything from Kakashi as usual. It was becoming harder with Kakashi learning better how to read him, but he pulled it off tonight—however, Kakashi might know he was bothered but just thought it was the hoax concerning him.
Sasuke told him about the meeting but attached no importance to it. Sasuke knew what it would be about. He just needed to sleep tonight.
-----
Sasuke wore his more formal clothes with his clan symbol on the back and on each side of his chest. He wore his sword with his pouches hidden under his kimono.
Fumihiro was an officious little rat of a man. All his power was from his position; he wasn’t even a member of any of the four noble clans; his clan was one of hundreds of smaller clans. Sasuke honestly didn’t care about the noble versus regular clans; every family had reasons to be proud. The noble clans did need some supervision just because two of the four were in danger of extinction: the Uchiha and the Akimichi. The Hyuuga and Aburame both had enough members to survive.
This arrogant man was almost dismissive of Sasuke when he greeted him and indicated he take a seat. Sasuke knew this was going to be painful.
“You’re the only Uchiha. Your clan is on the brink of extinction. Even if you fathered a number of heirs, the Sharingan is rare even among your bloodline. The Sharingan might become extinct at this point.”
“My line, my parents, my brother, and myself, all had the Sharingan. Powerful Sharingans. As long as another kekkei genkai does not interfere with the Sharingan, it’s likely that all my children will have the Sharingan.”
“Hmm.”
“Even if you’re right, why bring it up? It’s not like anything can be done if the Sharingan is too weak to be passed on without other members of my clan contributing.”
“You still need to produce as many heirs as possible to increase the likelihood of the Sharingan appearing.”
“I am aware of that.”
“You are hesitating to take a wife and start repopulating your clan.”
“I’m not even twenty. I don’t feel I’m ready to raise children.”
Fumihiro sneered at him. “It’s your torrid affair with Hatake. It’s easy, isn’t it? Being a depraved, debauch, pervert when you have no clan to shame.”
Sasuke’s eyes narrowed.
“Shaming and potentially ending your honored clan.” He scoffed. “And you threaten to end the Hatake line as well. Kakashi and Sakamo were both powerful, skilled shinobi. Unless one of you figures out how to shit out heirs, you’ve put an end to two great bloodlines. You are a foul seducer. A corrupter. Makes sense with your evil bloodline.”
Sasuke wanted to strangle this man, but he fought down the urge.
“I personally would not mind seeing your clan end, but the Sharingan is an important weapon to Konoha and yours is one of the founding clans. You plan to continue shaming your forbearers?”
This petty man shouldn’t be getting to Sasuke, but damn did he know where to twist the kunai. “I don’t plan to end my relationship with Kakashi.”
“You are expected to father a child. Will you?”
“I will.”
“Hmmmm. I will put together a list of candidates.”
“Don’t.”
“Hm? Do you have a candidate?”
“I understand your position, but that is my private affair. I will take care of my own clan.”
He sniffed. “Very well. There will be a meeting of the noble clan heads at the end of the week. Be there. Even if you have no clan to report on, you should be there; it is your duty.”
“I will attend.”
He gestured for Sasuke to ‘shoo’.
-----
Sasuke hid up under the eves of a roof to watch the street below. He just watched people go about their lives like they were animals behind a glass. No, Sasuke was the hidden snake behind the glass and people just walked by his cage, not seeing or even caring to look.
No one looked toward him until Naruto sensed him. It was probably more a shinobi sense of being watched than anything else. Naruto could see his friend in the shadows. He leaped up to sit near him.
They sat silently for a moment. Naruto turned to look at Sasuke’s face. Sasuke hadn’t moved, not his head or eyes. Naruto was one of only two people in the world who could read him. “You’re depressed.”
Sasuke barely smirked, really just the lifting of a corner of his lips. “I’ve been thinking, remembering.”
“Not good things?”
“I have no happy memories of my family. They aren’t bad, they just always depress me. The guy in charge of clan affairs got under my skin. He attacked me in the two places I’m vulnerable, Kakashi and my family. My family is more of a burden to me now. I miss them so much and the pain just won’t fade away.”
Naruto was silent for a minute. “I met my mom when I was learning to control Kurama and you and Orochimaru resurrected my dad, but I didn’t live with them and lose them like you did. But Jiraiya was like a grandfather to me and he died. I lost him. And I lost you. I saw you as a brother back then and still do. So, I don’t really know the pain you felt, but I get it. But you do have family now: Kakashi and me. He’s your lover and I see you as a brother.”
Sasuke smirked. Naruto put out his fist and Sasuke fist-bumped him. “Yeah. You were on your way to see Hinata.” He said as if he knew it for a fact.
“Yeah,” Naruto said, embarrassed.
“You shouldn’t keep her waiting.”
“You gonna be okay?”
“Yeah. Get out of here.”
“See you later.”
“Hn.”
Naruto jumped away.
Sasuke went back to watching the street. A man with a boy riding on his back walked by. Sasuke couldn’t be sure if it was father and son or brothers, but it nevertheless reminded Sasuke of his brother. The dreams of the future he had back then were smoke.
-----
Sasuke stalked in the house with an air that said ‘do not come near me.’ Kakashi stayed at the table oiling some of their weapons. Sasuke changed into simpler clothes and left again without a word. Kakashi assumed the meeting didn’t go well. Sasuke’s tight shoulders meant he hadn’t attacked anybody at least. He hoped Sasuke was going to blow off some steam in a safe way.
But Sasuke didn’t come home by sunset.
Kakashi summoned Pakkun and they sniffed the Uchiha out at his family shrine. “I should have known,” Kakashi sighed. Sasuke definitely had a fight about his clan. He told Pakkun to go home and he entered the shrine. It was empty, so he opened the hatch to the underground portion.
He didn’t take extra precautions because he didn’t think Sasuke was in fear of his safety this time and was merely wallowing; it was safer to approach a sad animal than a threatened one.
He followed the torch light to the stone where Sasuke was sitting facing it. Kakashi sat down next to him.
“He set you off.”
“Officious asshole.”
“Yeah, I’ve talked to him too.”
Sasuke was silent a while. Kakashi was content to let Sasuke think; he just didn’t want Sasuke to be alone.
“Kakashi, if you decide you want to get married to a woman and have children, I won’t hold it against you.”
“What?”
“I just want you to know I won’t go crazy or anything if you left. I can’t begrudge you wanting children or a woman.”
“I won’t leave you. It’s not like I did a great a job the last time I was entrusted with children.”
“You’d be a good father.”
“I think you would be too. You get along well with those genin. To all our surprise.”
“I am being selfish. I don’t want the responsibility of children yet.”
“At least you’re aware of it. So many just have children and do a horrible job parenting. But when you decide to have children, I’ll be here to help.” He looked at the stone and thought about the clan liaison. The Hatake clan was always small, but they were powerful; Fumihiro had encouraged him to start a family. He was an arrogant ass. “He pressured you about both our clans.”
“Yeah.”
“He badmouthed your clan.”
“Called us evil.”
“It’ll take time for people to forgive and forget.”
“He also attacked our relationship.”
Kakashi was silent.
“It’s not just him. This whole thing with the hoax. Whether they were trying to torture you with the idea of my death or messing with me . . . If they snuck in while you were asleep . . . If they were to sneak in and harm you I wouldn’t survive it.”
“I would wake up if anyone but you entered the room.”
“I ruined your reputation and now I’m putting your life in danger when you’re supposed to be safely retired.”
“My reputation is fine, and I need to be kept on my toes. If I feared for either, I would have ended this or not gotten involved with you in the first place. I love you.”
“My children wouldn’t be safe. And I worry that having children in the house would mean our relationship will have to cool.”
“We’re soundproofing the walls.”
Sasuke reached over to slip his hand down to the edge of the artificial leg’s cup to Kakashi’s inner thigh.
“You don’t want to go home first?”
Sasuke just rubbed his thigh.
“The ground’s hard and cold.” Sasuke didn’t respond. “We’re in a shrine.” No response. “This is your family’s sacred place.” No response.
Despite feeling like there were a hundred dead Uchiha staring at him with disapproval, Kakashi was getting aroused. He pressed his lips to Sasuke’s sideburn. “I will never let anything happen to you or yours.”
Sasuke turned his head to look at Kakashi. “Don’t you ever put your life on the line for me.”
“No promises.” He pressed his lips to Sasuke’s.
Madara, Fugaku, and Itachi might all be down here in spirit watching with reproach, but Kakashi put his hand to Sasuke’s cheek and deepened the kiss. He loved Sasuke so much, he didn’t care. He leaned in, forcing Sasuke back onto the stone floor. The cup holding his stump cushioned it, but the ground was hard on his other knee.
Once Sasuke was down, Kakashi pulled his lips away to strip his shirt and put it under Sasuke’s head. Sasuke looked up at him with affection; his worry evaporating. Sasuke did need to feel safe and protected by the one person he loved and trusted the most. Kakashi felt unworthy.
Kakashi pulled the boxers and pants off Sasuke’s legs and was frantic to get the rest of his own clothes off to release his growing erection.
“We don’t have lube.”
“Don’t be stupid,” Sasuke said. “You know a jutsu.”
Kakashi smirked and obliged. He made viscous liquid on the ground and scooped it up with his fingers to coat his cock.
There was something different about having Sasuke laid out on the floor in torch light than laid out on their bed. He looked far sexier right now. The torch light seemed to bring out Sasuke’s flush making his porcelain skin take on a ruddy hue. His skin actually looked . . . human. His depression destroyed his normal stoic expression and the shadows cast by the torch made certain parts of his body seem more erect. He was simply lovely. Kakashi wished he had a picture of this sight.
As much as he wanted to stare, he was eager enough to make love to him. Sasuke was easily entered even as he was wondrously tight. No other could pleasure him now that he’d tasted this. Sex with this Adonis can never get old.
Fucking his lover in front of the spirits of his entire clan was disconcerting but also firmly taking possession of him. If he survived the night, perhaps he had their approval? Kakashi doubted it. Especially when he was ramming his cock into the last Uchiha’s ass. Fugaku would incinerate him.
That made Kakashi smile as he leaned in to kiss Sasuke.
So much of Sasuke’s misery came from his clan. He was a servant to Konoha, but he was a prisoner of his clan. He wanted to take him from Konoha and the Uchiha. If he alone could possess him . . . At least he owned his heart. He would say body as well, but Konoha sent him into battle and his clan demanded—even from beyond the grave—that he father children.
“You are mine,” he growled. Sasuke’s only answer was a moan.
Kakashi sought out one of his hands, threading his fingers with his, and pressed their joined hands into the stone floor. Kakashi rocked into him leisurely. He took perverse pleasure in doing something so lewd in a shrine and so was in no hurry to finish.
Sasuke was though.
Sasuke twisted and tightened up to feel Kakashi’s cock better. That, of course, pleasured Kakashi. Soon they were both lost to the building pleasure and any pretense of control or rhythm died.
Kakashi pressed his forehead to Sasuke’s and held his breath as he came. He marked him with his sperm, taking ownership of him in this sacred place.
Sasuke was a heartbeat behind him, shooting cum on them both. Kakashi pushed himself up rather than press Sasuke into the stone floor. Once Sasuke caught his breath, he sat up too.
Sasuke scooted closer and cuddled together in the torch light with their legs intertwined.
Sasuke admitted, “Sometimes I wish I wasn’t an Uchiha. Sometimes I wish I was just a regular shinobi without special powers or a powerful clan. Someone who no one cared about and could lead any life he liked without being judged. To live a life without these crushing responsibilities.”
Kakashi petted Sasuke’s head. “You don’t have to be an Uchiha all the time. You don’t even have to be strong all the time. When you want to be weak or not an Uchiha, think of yourself as a Hatake. I’ll protect you; I won’t judge you. You are my only family.”
“Hn. I would say the same, but Naruto and I agreed that we’re brothers.”
“I don’t mind. I’m glad.”
“I don’t mind being a Hatake.”
Kakashi smiled and eyed the stone.
“Let’s go home. You can sleep in a bed.”
Sasuke didn’t answer, but he stood up and started dressing, handing Kakashi a few articles of clothing so he could dress too. He helped haul Kakashi up to his feet, so he could finish dressing. They walked home in the late twilight.
Sasuke didn’t shower, but he cleaned up and then snaked into bed. Kakashi mimicked him, but he didn’t take off his leg. He lay in bed, putting his arm over Sasuke’s arm, but he didn’t settle in. Sasuke fell asleep.
Kakashi carefully got out of bed and made a clone. The real Kakashi dressed in his ANBU uniform. He slipped out, leaving the clone to keep his chakra in the room to prevent Sasuke from waking from its absence.
It wasn’t late. He moved over the village as if it was an enemy settlement.
Fumihiro’s office was in the Tower. It was no trouble for a former ANBU, even a lame one, to enter the building without being seen or sensed.
Fumihiro was puttering around, getting ready to leave for the day. He was startled by the lights turning off. Before he could even look toward the switch, Kakashi was on him, a hand over his mouth and a kunai at his throat, his body was pressed securely to Fumihiro’s.
“Sasuke was unhappy when he returned home; I believe you had something to do with it.” Kakashi’s chakra and voice were dead cold. Kakashi was an ANBU assassin again; a wraith with no mercy and no sympathy.
“If you ever threaten, belittle, or insult my lover again, I will cut you from throat to groin, pull out your organs, even your lungs and heart, without killing you. Then I’ll strangle you with your own intestines. And if you use me to get to him, I’ll leave you were your family will find you. Do we have an understanding?” Kakashi released his hold on the man’s face.
“Yes, sir,” he whimpered.
“Good.”
Kakashi pretty much vanished, leaving Fumihiro to crumple to the ground.
Kakashi slipped back into the house and dismissed his clone. Sasuke hadn’t stirred. He stripped and snuggled in behind Sasuke.
-----
Sasuke was dreading this meeting. Kakashi had sent him off with a smile and assurance that it wouldn’t be as bad as the last meeting.
Sasuke was the second clan head to arrive. Hiashi stood near the door to Fumihiro’s office.
“Hiashi-sama,” Sasuke greeted.
“Sasuke-sama,” Hiashi nodded.
Aburame Shibi arrived wearing sunglasses and a collar so high even Sasuke’s eyebrow rose. Akimichi Choza was the last of the heads of the noble clans to arrive. Sasuke was a little uncomfortable being the youngest here, but he wasn’t intimidated by it.
As if showing off the fact he could actually sense chakra, Fumihiro chose then to open the door and let the infinitely more powerful and important men into the room.
Sasuke and Choza sat on either end of their side of the table. Hiashi sat next to Sasuke. Fumihiro sat across from them.
“Thank you all for coming. This is the first time all the current heads of the noble houses have met.” He didn’t look over at Sasuke.
Sasuke felt better when he realized the others were just as unhappy to be here as he was.
“Do you have anything to report?”
Sasuke didn’t show his boredom but listened quietly to each of the other clan heads report on mundane dealings of the clans including a birth and a broken arm. But they all shied away from their children’s love lives. When Fumihiro came to Sasuke last, Sasuke merely said, “I have nothing to report.”
Fumihiro barely glanced at Sasuke. “I understand Hinata is seeing Uzumaki Naruto,” Fumihiro said.
“She is,” Hiashi confirmed.
“I have looked into his bloodline. The Uzumaki innate healing ability is not a kekkei genkai and he has no other bloodline trait that might interfere with the Byakugan.” In other words, he approved. He had to be aware that she wouldn’t be the next clan head, he was just making sure as many of the clan with the Byakugan would be born as possible.
“What about Shino?” he asked Shibi.
“He is not focused on romance. Why? He has goals he wishes to fulfill first.”
“Your clan is almost as endangered as the Uchiha. I must insist he think of this. I can draw up a list of possible candidates if you wish.”
“I will speak to him. Why? I do not want my clan to end any more than you do.”
“And Choji?”
“He has a bit of a crush on a young lady from Kumo. Karui.”
“Ah, very good. I shall look into her clan.”
“I don’t think she has a kekkei genkai. She’s a swordswoman.”
That struck Sasuke’s interest. There were only so many swordsmen in Konoha who weren’t in ANBU. Being from Kumo, she probably had lightning nature. She might be a good match for him in training.
“Sasuke-sama, you said you were considering someone.” He didn’t look at Sasuke until he finished the sentence.
“I am.”
“Please let me know who she is so I can make sure the Sharingan has the great chance of being passed on.”
“I will, when the time is right.”
Fumihiro nodded to him and looked away. “Thank you, gentlemen. I hope you will inform me of any developments.”
They all nodded. Fumihiro stood up, opened the door for them.
“Sasuke-sama, may I have a moment?” Fumihiro asked.
Sasuke stopped on his way to the door. Fumihiro shut the door on the other three.
“I wanted to apologize for what I said the other day and the way I said it. I should never have been so insolent.”
Sasuke was stunned, but he didn’t outwardly react. “Apology accepted.”
“Thank you.” He ushered Sasuke out.
Sasuke only reached the end of the corridor. Hiashi was waiting for him.
“I wanted to have a word as well, Sasuke-sama.”
“Please.”
Hiashi went still as he made sure there was no one within earshot. Sasuke tensed at the uncertainty in Hiashi’s body language. This was not a man who ever showed hesitation. “The idea of mixing the Sharingan and Byakugan has intrigued some of my clansmen. I know you would want a purer bloodline with a pure Sharingan, but we were wondering if you would consider . . . contributing to such a child. We would take full responsibility for the child or give you full joint rights. We know a marriage would be out of the question because of our individual kekkei genkai, but a single liaison . . .”
“I understand. It could prove to be a powerful union.”
“We believe so.”
“Kaguya possessed something like what you propose. We lack the Senju blood to make her Rinne Sharingan Byakugan, but it would be an impressive power.”
“You will consider it?”
“I will. I appreciate you not mentioning this to Fumihiro.”
“I would never. He would kidnap you and one of my daughters and force the experiment.” His smile was weak, but he did say it mostly in jest.
“Not Hinata though, right?”
“No. Perhaps Hanabi or another member of our clan.”
“Hinata is my best friend’s girlfriend, I wouldn’t do anything to damage that relationship.”
“Agreed.”
Sasuke nodded to him. “I will think about it.”
They bowed to each other and left the building nearly side by side.
-----
Sasuke was pensive when he arrived home. Kakashi was waiting on a stretch of grass just outside their gates under the pretense of reading in the sunlight, but he barely comprehended a word. He wanted to see Sasuke’s state as soon as he could to know how best to act around him for the rest of the day. He hoped he didn’t have to lift his spirits too much.
The pensive look was not one of the expressions Kakashi anticipated.
“Alright?”
“Fumihiro apologized.”
“Well, that’s good,” Kakashi said with rainbow-eyed smile. He will never ever tell Sasuke what he did and he was glad Fumihiro didn’t give anything away.
With that, Sasuke shook it off. Hiashi’s offer didn’t disturb him; it was something he’d given a thought to before. That was something further in the future; he would make sure his own line was secure before he would truly consider such a thing.
“Otherwise, how was the meeting?” Kakashi asked.
“Fumihiro approves of Naruto marrying Hinata, if it comes to that. The Akimichi and Aburame are more in danger of extinction than I thought, but Choji has a crush on a kunoichi from Kumo. That’s all. And he didn’t mention you at all. If he had, I might have strangled him.”
Kakashi smiled and got up to join Sasuke inside their walls. As nice as the air was outside, Kakashi felt safer in those walls. He wondered if they made Sasuke feel safe or confined. He thought he must feel safe since he didn’t like to leave them.
Sasuke’s shoulders fell and Kakashi mussed the back of his feather like hair. “You need to relax, or you’ll develop a wrinkle between your eyes and heartburn.”
“You mean I’ll turn into my father.”
“I almost turned into mine,” Kakashi shrugged.
“No one should bother me about my clan for a while. I’m on leave for a while. I just want to rest until I’m sent out again.”
The strain in his voice hit Kakashi. “You know what your next mission will be.”
Sasuke narrowed his eyes at his lover. “You’re not supposed to know anything about that.”
“Have you seen Gaara since we left Suna?”
“Jealous, are we? No, I’ve not seen him. No more asking about Suna or Gaara. Keeping secret missions from another high level jounin is nearly impossible,” he sighed. “There is no mission in Suna.”
“Of course not.” Kakashi smiled broadly behind his mask.
“With this hoax, I should warn you, don’t come after me, no matter what. News of my death, intelligence of a trap, or a request for help, don’t. Don’t come after me.”
“I can’t promise that.”
“Just keep my warning in mind.”
“That I will do.”
“If you were to find us, we’d already be dead. If you were to get near us, you might die. They’ll send something more definite than a headband and a bloodless piece of cloth.”
“I understand.”
“On the other side, I don’t want to insult you, but my mind would be at ease if you were to keep at least one of your ninken with you at night.”
“To keep your mind at ease, I might.”
“But not tonight.” He smiled.
