The day that the world ended and started again was like so many others. The spring breeze wafting over the Leaf carried the scent of blossoms and coming rain. Sakura was patrolling the edges of the village when powerful chakra washed over her. She had shouted for her team to fetch replacement and prepared to face off against some new dire enemy. Who would be fool enough to attack the village now that Naruto was Hokage? But an attack had not come. Rather the shock of her life. For Sasuke had stepped into the dappled sunlight and met her eyes with dark ones of his own. “Sa...suke” she whispered and her lips had tightened to a thin line. “What are you doing here?” He’d spread those pale hands before him, “Just to come home” She’d flown at him, fist fully charged with chakra. He’d not dodged, taking the blow head on. Staggering and then flying to land heavily against a tree. His former teammate standing there shivering with rage and disbelief. Ready to destroy him where he stood until Naruto arrived. A warm hand falling to her shoulder as the Uchiha slowly gained his feet. “I deserved that” Sasuke had said then, “But it’s the only free shot that any of you get.” Weeks had passed. Naruto smoothing the way for Sasuke to return freely. Sakura waited for him to attack the village. Months passed and Sasuke was allowed to join missions with Sakura and Kakashi. Sakura waited for him to leave. Nearly two years passed and Sasuke was fully integrated into the village. Welcomed. Sakura waited still. For that proverbial other shoe to drop. “She hates me” Sasuke told Naruto one day as they finished sparring. His dark eyes moving to where the rose haired woman stood in the treetops out of ear shot. Naruto let his blue eyes slide to his best female friend in all the world. “Hate? No. That’s not it” he murmured. Sasuke blinked, “What then?” “She doesn’t trust you.” Sasuke grunted. “You haven’t given her a reason to want to get close to you again. Look what happened last time.” Sasuke considered that. “I had something to do.” Naruto nodded, “I know. She knows too. But it doesn’t lessen the hurt any.” “Why is she alone?” Sasuke found himself asking. ‘She’s powerful, smart, and beautiful.’ “Broken. Your fault.” The Uchiha started at that. “Broken...” “You know what they say” Naruto went on, that fox like grin lighting on his golden features, “You break it, you fix it.” “But you...” “Am proposing to Hinata tonight.” “Congratulations.” “Thanks.” Sasuke watched his Hokage and friend walk away. So Sakura was broken and it was up to him to fix her? Well, he thought to himself that was a challenge well worth taking. He closed his eyes for a moment, plotting his course of action carefully and then rose himself to wander home. Sakura had just completed a grueling shift at the hospital. She was hungry and tired and sore. It was late and she just wanted to go home, but she’d forgotten to go shopping and there was nothing appealing to eat in her cabinets. “Oh well” she sighed, “I can do that tomorrow. Guess its Ichiraku’s tonight.” She lifted her arms over her head to stretch the stiff soreness from her muscles. That’s when his chakra rolled over her. She froze, “Hello Sasuke” she said coolly as his handsome features came into view. “Sakura” he said in greeting. “What are you doing here? I thought you were on a mission.” “Got back earlier.” Her green eyes roved over him from head to toe despite herself. “You injured?” He cocked his head to one side and stared at her blandly. The unspoken question of whom or what could do him much injury hanging between them. “So” she went on, lowering her arms, “What are you doing at the hospital?” “Came to see you” he said bluntly. He had intended his words to catch her off guard and her expression clearly told him he had succeeded. “Me?” He nodded, “Naruto mentioned you were working late tonight. Figured you might be hungry.” Sakura blinked and then stiffened, “Wait. What?” Sasuke leaned just a hint closer to her pretty face, “Dinner. Sakura.” He reminded her, “I want to buy you dinner. I have something I’d like to talk to you about if you will hear me out.” Sakura inwardly flinched at his tone. He’d done nothing to warrant her hostility and then avoidance. She stared at her feet as she pondered his request. She suspected he was going to confront her. Naruto trusted him, Sasuke had done everything in his power to make up for the hurt and worry he’d caused them. Sakura was honest enough with herself to know that she’d not given him much of a chance. When she raised her green eyes to lock with deepest gray she saw him patiently waiting. She nodded, “Ok. Sure. “ He nodded turning and letting her catch up with him as they walked the quiet nighttime streets. She noticed as they walked he did nothing to put distance between them and she refused to give an inch. So his hand brushed against hers several times. Sakura tried to ignore the breathless feeling that took hold in her chest from his nearness. She could pretend all she wanted but Sasuke still held a deeply rooted place in her heart. “Are you angry with me?” he asked then. She yanked herself out of her reverie and looked over at him; “No” she finally said sounding defeated by the admission, “I’m not angry with you.” “Why do you avoid me then?” She shrugged, “Figured you and Naruto had issues to talk and work out between yourselves.” “Lame excuse Sakura” he said as they arrived at the ramen stand, he motioned her in first. “It’s not” she defended. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
