----------Hours Later----------
Groaning softly from the massive headache pounding in his skull Naruto squinted his eyes open, taking stock of his surroundings. He was in a cell on a cot... and bound - tightly - judging by the resistance he encountered when he tried to move. As his headache faded he realized that his jacket and shirt had been removed, and that he was not only bound but a collar had been put on him, the other end of the chain in a loop on the wall behind him. His wrists were tied to each other, to the collar, and to the rope around his ankles. And there was something that felt like a metal mitten on his fingers to keep him from doing seals. But the one thing he couldn't understand was why he felt so powerless. Surely he'd been out long enough to restock a bit of his Chakra!
“How do you like your new home?” a calm voice asked from the other side of the bars. Itachi smirked when Naruto refused to meet his eyes. He'd learned not to do that the hard way a couple years back.
“Screw you,” Naruto shot back angrily, refusing to admit his seeming weakness to the one he hated most.
“Isn't it funny how dogs always bark louder when they're chained up....” Kisame muttered, his meaning clear that he anticipated a lot of noise, well so long as Naruto was energetic enough to make noise. Kisame looked to the huge sword laying beneath the cot Naruto lay on. It was just visible. He felt a little naked without it but he was getting over it already.
Itachi's smirk just widened a tiny bit. “I suppose you're feeling a little under the weather. Kisame's sword is right underneath you, so you won't be able to recover your chakra unless we let you. And we will let you out of there as soon as you agree to work with us.”
“I'd rather rot in hell first,” Naruto growled, his mind trying to come up with ways to kill himself while being tied up like this so that those bastards couldn't have the fox's power.
“Suit yourself. Come, Kisame.” Itachi left, but he'd be back later again. He keep coming until Naruto broke. Kisame's chuckle as he followed Itachi out was bone chilling.
“Don't you think that someone will eventually come looking for him...” Kisame said as they reached a more private area. He knew how difficult it would be to find this place, but it was not beyond the ninja of Konoha to be overly resourceful when it was either their people or one of their own that was in need.
“By the time anyone finds him he'll be under our control,” Itachi said confidently. “You'll see. I have... plans for convincing him to listen to us.” The look in his eyes was one of icy evil.
Kisame returned the look, and settled on a comfortable seat. “I can't wait...” he murmured eager to see his superior in action.
----------One Month Later----------
Sasuke was ready to rip every wall of the place down. Right now, without hesitation. The only thing stopping him was the knowledge that Naruto was inside, somewhere. A month! He couldn't believe it had taken him one whole damned month to locate this wretched place! He could feel the Blood Lust stir a little, but he'd gorged himself the previous night, taking his frustrations out on a few hapless animal victims and several humans. There was no way he'd loose control of himself tonight, not when his brother was in there too.
Silent as the cloud that passed silently over the waning moon above him, Sasuke crept into the building completely undetected, stopped and inhaled deeply shifting through the scents to find Naruto's if he could. His senses latched onto the scent almost immediately and he started forward at a quick and still silent gait. When he stopped it was in front of a large door from behind which wafted that familiar and long-sought aroma. A pulse of telekinetic power made sure the door was open and then he was inside a hallway which led him right to a cage. Everything was dark, but his vampire's eyes adjusted easily, his pupils dilating until the barest edge of iris outlined them. Then he looked inside his rage swelling to new heights.
Naruto's eyes seemed dead as they looked at nothing, eyelids at half mast. He was still bound exactly as he had been on his first day in this hell hole, and there underneath the ropes on his wrists and ankles the skin was scabbed and bloody from struggling to get free. The struggling had stopped about a week ago but he didn't have the energy to heal himself. In fact he had almost no chakra left - his or Kyuubi's. The sword still lay under him, steadily draining him to death. Adding to his weakness was the fact that he'd only received food once a week - only a mouthful of bread and cheese. Water was given to him every day but it was never enough to quench his thirst. He'd lost a significant amount of muscle mass in his body's attempt to make up for the lack of nutrition. There were livid bruises where Kisame had struck him for talking back to Itachi or for simply refusing to give in to them. But worst of all were the wounds that were invisible... Itachi had come to him every day to comment on the fact that no one had come to rescue him yet, that in fact he'd heard news of celebration in Konoha now that the demon-boy was gone. Naruto had defiantly refused to believe him and hope that someone would come... until a couple days ago when he'd felt just too weak to hope anymore. He was currently trying to will himself to death.
Shaking hands gripped the bars between Naruto and himself. If there were no words to describe his rage except that Itachi would pay for every mark on and in the boy laying there so still before him. Dark eyes traversed the battered body once more and then he was flexing his arms. The iron made one small squeak to either side of him as it gave under his will. He stepped through and knelt. The first thing would be to get rid of the sword. He reached beneath guarding his own chakra from it as best he could and picked it up. It still leeched him, trying to suck it all away, but Sasuke wasted no time in carrying it to the hole he'd made in the iron bars and slid it far down the hallway making as little noise as possible. The he turned and leaned over Naruto his hands ghosting seeking fingers over every inch of binding, getting to know the knots and straps and the method to them before he began to loosen and untie them.
“Naruto...” he crooned and stole one hand from its duty to caress Naruto's pale and hollowed cheek. “Naruto...” he would repeat that name until he got a response. He would never give up until he saw that bright smile again. Naruto was alive and he would get through this! Sasuke would see to that personally. “Naruto... it's me... Look at me Naruto.” He kept his voice low but made it more firm every time he spoke.
Naruto didn't react at all when the ropes rubbed painfully at his scabs, but ever so slowly Sasuke's voice pierced the tired haze surrounding his mind. His eyes closed and when he half-opened them again they were turned towards Sasuke. His lips formed Sasuke's name but no sound came out. He was afraid to make any noise, because surely this was a hallucination and any sound would end it. And he didn't want it to end. Silently he watched through fatigue-cloudy eyes as Sasuke untied him, so sure that this was just another dream.
Relief flooded every particle of Sasuke's very being. Naruto was conscious, maybe not lucid but intelligent enough to at least recognize him. “Yes... It's Sasuke. Gods...” he bit his lip hard to keep himself from gushing. Relief made him giddy, but he had to keep his wits about him. “I'm getting you out of here right now, Naruto...” The last rope fell to the side then and he very carefully gathered Naruto to him cradling him as he leaned over the cot. His embrace was tender, gentle, and as cautious as it could possibly be. Oh, Itachi would die for this. This paled in comparison to his family's death. It was his family's fault for having a Jutsu that needed death, that Death summoned them in the end. Naruto... had done nothing to deserve what he had received. “Naruto...” he murmured as he straightened slowly, one arm under the boy's knees supporting his thighs and the other around his back supporting his shoulders holding him against Sasuke's solid chest. His arms were rock steady now.
Naruto's lips formed Sasuke's name again as his eyes closed and he tipped his head towards the warmth of Sasuke's chest. His face contorted in pain as his starved muscles protested at the change in position, but still he convinced himself that this was just a dream. The pain was probably Kisame hitting him again to wake him up. Hoarsely he whispered, begging the dream Sasuke, “Kill me... Don't let them... have Kyuubi...” Two weeks ago Itachi had told Naruto some very frightening news. If Naruto did not eventually obey them, they would take Kyuubi out of him and put the demon into a container they could control. But if Naruto died, Kyuubi died... and Naruto would never let them have Kyuubi.
“They won't have Kyuubi, Naruto... because they won't have you. Not any more,” he murmured firmly and pressed his lips to the top of Naruto's drooping, old-straw colored spikes. “You're safe now... with me,” he whispered into Naruto's hair softly, lips still brushing the other's scalp. He stood there for several seconds simply holding the nothing-weight in his arms. For over a month he had craved this. For one whole month he had feared to never have it again. But he had to move out, or else run the risk of endangering Naruto further. “Relax...” he crooned his deep, even voice as soothing as he could make it. “Stay with me, Naruto...” he added as he turned, so careful with the bundle in his arms one might have thought he was carrying a priceless diamond to see him, and started out of the cell again. His mind reached out cautiously as his mouth fell silent for stealth's sake, and he brushed his thoughts to the Kyuubi. *Kitsune?* all was quiet in the hall beyond the door he'd come through and so he started out sticking to the shadows.
He got a quiet, tired, and amazingly grateful rumble in response. The demon understood what Sasuke was doing and approved.
Satisfied that that part of Naruto would survive as well, he left the fox to its own healing. His only concerns now were for the human side of Naruto. They were so close to exit now that he could taste the freedom of the outdoors. Sasuke's step picked up a little, cautiously. “We're almost out...” he whispered encouragingly to Naruto hoping he would hear and understand.
“Long time no see, Sasuke.”
