Iruka was stopped six more times as he made his way to the lake to reset his fishing lines and to town to purchase cold medicine for Kakashi. Each time he was warned to go back to the cabin they were looking for a dangerous criminal. On the seventh time was ordered to turn his coat inside out “so they wouldn’t waste anymore time stopping to check a fucking idiotic civilian”.
None of them asked about the person he was carrying, word had spread it wasn’t Kakashi. Besides no ninja would carry an injured companion through the snow without chakra or leave them unattended in enemy territory. His entire body ached when he made it to town. He was passing Mama-san’s restaurant when she called him over. “Rui!” she had long ago dropped the formalities and dropped the san and first syllable from his name. “I was started to think I wouldn’t see you today. I have a letter from your mother. Come in get a bit to eat while you read it. We have all the traditional New Year’s dishes. I’ll give you a special price.” “Thank you for the offer, but I only came to town to buy cold medicine.” Iruka politely declined after accepting the letter. “That’s too bad,” the woman sighed. “Since you’re here can you do me a quick favor? It won’t take long and it is a local tradition. Do you mind stopping by the houses with a red envelope in the window on your way out of the village? Tell them I sent you.” Iruka cursed inwardly but nodded. Urui was polite and respectful. He was welcomed into the village and they provided his sole source of income. It would be rude to offend them and plain stupid to blow his cover. “Yes, Mama-san, I’ll pay them a quick visit.” The town didn’t have an apothecary but he had seen cold medicine in the general store, which of course was closed for the holiday. He walked around the building to the living area behind the store and knocked on the door. “I’m sorry to intru-…” A male Shinsuke’s age opened the door and closed the door. “We’re closed go away.” Iruka knocked again. This time when the door opened he bowed, “Please, I just need to buy some cold medicine. I’ll pay double.” The teen raised his eyebrow, “Triple.” “That’s fine. Please I just need to buy the medicine. It’s urgent.” Iruka stated handing over the money, his head still lowered. “Daisuke, who is at the door?” the owner’s wife asked coming around the corner. “Some stranger wanting medicine, I’m charging extra since it’s the holiday,” he replied counting the money. “What?” she looked at the amount and then saw Iruka. She slapped her son on the back of the head and snatched the money. “You ungrateful fiend. This is the man who caught the fish for your nephew and pregnant sister-in-law. You know how important it is that they have fresh protein.” “Rui-san, please forgive him. He’s been attending university at the capitol and has lost all of the manners I’ve taught him, “the woman clucked ushering Iruka inside her home. “What is ailing you?” Iruka removed the hood of his parka and was about to reply but was cut off. “You look awful!” He imagined it was true. He’d just carried Kakashi up a ravine and the ten miles from Giha to the cabin. He’d spent the previous night breaking into a fortress, maintaining three clones, and healing Kakashi and the previous day he’d run and jumped like a fool setting multiple seals around the hunting lodge to protect him. He was about to answer when the woman pressed a hand to his forehead, clasped his cheeks and unzipping his jacket, “Your face is cold but you’re soaking wet. Stay here. I’ll get what you need.” Iruka nodded dumbly. The two year old peeked around the corner and waved at him. He waved back and made a face at him. The boy burst into to giggles and toddled towards him. “Oh no, you don’t,” a bearded man laughed, picking up the child and introducing himself as Daiichi, the boy’s father and the Shibata’s oldest son. “Here you go. Consider it an otoshidama.” The store owner returned giving Iruka a large parcel and with handwritten instructions on how to take the medicine and what each one was good for. “Please, stay for dinner.” Iruka’s eyes widened. He wasn’t expecting an invitation. “I can’t Shibata-san. I’m coming down with something.” Iruka stammered, “Tomoko-san is pregnant and there’s the baby. I wouldn’t want to give them my illness.” “Oh, you’re right” the woman moaned and fretted. “Stay here.” When the woman returned she also made him promise to stop by the houses with a red envelope in the window and pressed two meat buns in his hand advising they’ll help him keep his strength up until he made it back to the cabin. Iruka stopped at the first house and was immediately welcomed once he announced Mama-san and Shibata-san sent him. Five minutes later he was on his way with an invitation to return and a few balls of mochi. He grew suspicious when three other men his age told him which houses had the best cooks and prettiest daughters. At the next residence he confirmed the red envelopes identified which homes had unwed daughters that had reached the age for marriage. Ten homes later he was loaded down with food and six invitations to begin the courtship process. The sun was down by the time checked his fishing lines and return to the cabin. He was stopped three times before the one-eared man ordered someone to take him to the cabin. He was told in no uncertain terms he could be killed while wandering in the forest before they told him it was safe, they were looking for a murderous group of bandits. Iruka loudly thanked them and made a show of dropping his keys and stomping the snow from his boots. Ill and injured Kakashi was still a jounin, he didn’t want to be killed for spooking him. He was surprised to find Kakashi was still asleep. He left the food on the table and checked the fire, surprised to see it was still burning. “Maybe he did wake up.” Iruka mused as passed by on the way to the kitchen to deposit the fish he’d caught in the sink. They began flopping sluggishly as soon as he turned on the cold water. He back outside and brought in two handfuls of snow and added to them. He didn’t know how long the Cloud and Snow ninja would look for Kakashi so he decided to keep the fish alive and kill them as needed. He washed his hands and checked the fire in the bathroom. The fire was almost out but the water was still warm. He scooped embers and smaller pieces of wood from the fireplace in the main room into a metal pail and grabbed a few pieces of the dried wood he gotten from the village. He paused by the bed and announced he was going to take a bath. He heard Kakashi stirring while he was washing himself off. The man never came in so he crossed the bathroom and slipped into the water to read Tsunade’s letter. My Brave Son, Do you have any idea how much we miss you? Why is it you can control my youngest better than I can? [The mission room and your class is an utter mess without you] I would like nothing more than to rise up like steam or wash over you like a wave and gather you to my bosom. [There are reinforcements on standby in the Land of Hot Water and Wave]. I fully trust your judgment. [I won’t deploy them until you tell me you need them.] You’ve grown into a fine young man capable of making your own decisions. I’m both sad and proud you no longer rely on your Mother. [I trust your judgment. Contact them directly if urgent]. I’m sure that you will find happiness. [Keep searching for Kakashi] It may not be what you originally sought after, but I’m sure the gods will send a blessing your way when they deem you ready to receive it. [Your mission objective has changed. Gather as much intel as possible]. I know that we will be reunited one day. [Take as long as you need.] As always be safe, Your loving mother, The handwriting switched to Shizune’s at this point. Dear Little Brother, I’m sorry to hear about your misfortune, but I am glad to know that you are safe. Family always comes together in times of need so do not worry. [Lord Shijima’s daughter had agreed to return to Fire Country.] I am bringing them to my home where they will be safe. [I will be accompanying the ninja to retrieve her]. Do you remember when we were children and you’d crawl into my bed because you were afraid of the booming thunder and flashing lightning? [Do you remember the way to the Safe house between Sound and Lightning?] I’d like nothing more than to wake up and find my half my covers toxt over you. [Rendezvous time between half of the Ox and half of the Tiger.] I may be cold, my husband may be crowded, but our small family would be united. [I’ll be waiting with a small squad if you need us]. May the twelve fortunes smile on you in the coming year. [I’ll spend the first twelve days of the New Year in Snow]. What Kaa-chan said [Be safe] and remember to keep a cool head and remain in control [Be calm and control your chakra if you need to use medical jutsu] Your loving Neechan who taught you everything you know, [You are a capable medic Iruka. I taught you and I don’t teach failures] Iruka tossed the letter in the fire pit as soon as he finished reading it. Shizune and a squad would be at the safe house in less than 24 hours. If he would have waited one more day to rescue Kakashi the jounin could have been properly treated by a real medic. She would be there between half the Ox and half the Tiger – between 2:00AM and 4:00AM in the morning. Iruka shook his head in digust. Shizune or someone would be at the safe house he’d just risked blowing his cover to leave for several hours of the upcoming week. He was running on chakra pills and adrenaline. If he tried to get Kakashi to the safe house at the nearest opportunity he’d be risking a heart attack and capture. The woods were already crawling with Cloud and Snow ninja; there numbers would increase daily as they called back their companions. Lord Washizu had him followed when he left his castle. Shizune and her team would be closely monitored and may not be able to leave at all. Even if he were able to get Kakashi to Shizune to be healed and they left, they’d lose their chance to gather information about the Snow and Cloud alliance. If they were caught making their escape, they could very well start a war. Entering unallied territories without the proper papers was considered and act of war under the treaty ending the Third War. Most countries ignored that particular section since it would be foolish to being a war over a minor act of trespassing. Cloud and Snow could be preparing to declare war, but if Leaf nin were caught in their territory, Konoha would be considered the aggressor. It would be more prudent to stick to his original plan. Shizune would be able to tell what was missing from the safe house and guess Kakashi’s injuries. Hopefully she’d realize they were hiding. He’d have to send a letter to Konoha as soon as possible to let them know they were safe. Author’s Note: Otoshidama are gifts given Japan at the beginning of the new year.
