He stared down at the ring in his hand. The clerk had stepped away and busied himself for a few minutes to allow Kakashi to decide.
There was no real question, at least not about the ring. It was perfect. It was a round emerald set in a very simple white gold setting. Neither too large nor too small, he thought the simplicity of it would appeal to her.
No, he still was trying to figure out if he had lost his mind. They'd been together for...he stopped to count. Four days. They'd actually been together for four days. Of course, he knew that things had been developing for much, much longer. He had no idea how long he's loved her.
He shook his head at himself. It didn't matter. This felt right. Just like being with her had felt right in a way that it hadn't with anyone before her.
He paid for the ring and the clerk found a small black velvet box to put it in. Kakashi thought it might be a little cliché, but then again, he'd never done this before. He took the small bag from the clerk and hurried to the inn to change.
He considered simply transporting, but even as early as it was, there were too many people around for him to risk it. He walked quickly instead, a little frustrated at the necessity. Up in the room, however, it only took him a couple of minutes to change. After debating briefly, he put the velvet box in his pocket. He had no idea when he might ask, but he wanted it with him.
He made it back to the tea shop and it looked as if Sakura hadn't noticed anything. He took a moment to make sure he was as casual as he always was before he sat down next to her. She smiled at him and greeted him with a kiss.
"We're still a bit early. Could we go back out to the pier? I love the water." She said a bit louder than necessary.
Kakashi caught on quickly and stood. "Of course."
They took the block to the pier at a nice stroll and wandered to one end, where there were no people yet. The dockworkers that were out were at the end of another pier, loading one of the ships anchored there. The air was cool even for the port city, the morning breezes causing goose bumps on Sakura's arms.
She rubbed her arms and stared out to sea. "Something's going down tonight."
"Oh, really?" Kakashi asked. He'd noticed her discomfort and took his new jacket off to drape it over her shoulders.
She smiled up at him gratefully. "Thank you." Turning her attention back to the horizon, she said, "there were a couple of workers standing around the corner of the tea shop arguing. One of them didn't want to work tonight, and the other told him that his boss didn't take too kindly to his people having a mind of their own. Odd talk, but if we suspect the Fushinji of being who we think they are, it's not really surprising."
She paused to take a deep breath of the sea air. She watched the gulls as they danced across the surface of the water, then fly away again, only to circle back and dart once more for their meal. "Apparently, once you work for them, you never stop. Or, at least, you don't make the decision to stop."
Kakashi nodded. From what they'd gathered so far, that sounded right up Fushinji's alley. He leaned in a bit closer to Sakura as a small group of sailors passed by. His arm wrapped possessively around her, he said, "fits right in with organized crime. But are they just a small family? Or is this bigger?"
"I'm still not sure," Sakura replied. "I mean, it's all fishy - no pun intended. But I'm not sure how big the fish are yet."
"You're not going to carp on this, are you?" Kakashi asked with a straight face.
Sakura wanted to groan. "No, I just make these jokes for the halibut."
He couldn't hold it in and he let loose his laugh. Sakura joined him for a moment before they got serious again. "Well, then. I guess we know where we're spending our evening, don't we?"
Sakura nodded. "So, after your appointment, I guess we go back and try to rest?"
Kakashi caught the smirk in her voice. "Why Sakura! I think I'm turning you into a regular pervert!"
She grinned evilly at him. "How do you know I wasn't already one?"

They were still early, so they took some time looking around at the buildings surrounding the Fushinji headquarters. They were mostly unremarkable, simple storefronts and a few private residences. They wandered to the end of the street where the city butted up against the beginnings of the forest. Here, the houses were smaller and less well-kept as their neighbors. Beyond these was nothing but thick forest.
They turned back down the street and by the time they made it back to the office building, it was time to go in. The lobby was very simple. The building was recently refurbished and not yet complete. There was a small desk along one side and two simple chairs across from it. A low table sat between them with a few magazines stacked on it.
There was a small cherry blossom tree in a pot in one corner behind the chairs. In the opposite corner was a small fish tank with bright neon fish. The wall behind the receptionist looked to be solid cherry wood paneling and the words "Fushinji Enterprises" were hung in large silver letters. The floor was covered in a rich, wine-colored carpet, and from somewhere behind the walls, soft music played.
Kakashi approached the receptionist, a compact no-nonsense woman with short cropped hair, no jewelry or make up and a very simple gray suit. She bared her teeth in a facsimile of a smile at Sakura before turning to Kakashi. "May I help you?"
"I am Hatake Kakashi. I have an appointment with Mr. Fushinji." Kakashi smiled at the receptionist who seemed to be the first female they encountered who was immune to it.
She consulted a piece of paper in front of her before looking back up at him. "Ah, yes. Mr. Fushinji is currently occupied but will be available in a moment, however, I do not see a…" she paused and raked Sakura with her eyes, "companion listed for the appointment."
It was only by the grace of years of ninja training that neither Kakashi nor Sakura picked the little woman up by her neck and tossed her into the ocean. "My wife would simply appreciate waiting for me. I'm sure that isn't an inconvenience?"
He turned it into a question, but there was no doubt that the woman could not turn him down. There was obviously a chair for her to wait in and as the woman had no idea what business he had with her boss, she couldn't very well dismiss them.
She was saved by answering, however. "Of course your lovely wife can join us!" Mr. Fushinji was as compact as his receptionist, though he was either much friendlier or simply better at making it look like he was.
He was several inches shorter than Kakashi and about an inch shorter than Sakura. He smiled warmly up at her, took her hand in the old fashioned way and kissed her knuckles. She couldn't help but to smile back. His dark eyes took everything in. His face was clean shaven and his hair neatly trimmed short. He wore a western business suit of black with a simple white shirt. His tie, however, sported colorful small pictures of children's hands.
He turned his attention to Kakashi. "Welcome, Mr. Hatake. Shall we?" He held his hand out toward the hallway to the left of the reception desk. He turned to his receptionist. "Please hold my visitors, Carol."
He waited for Kakashi and Sakura to proceed him down the hall. "On the right." He indicated an open area some fifty meters down the hall. There was another secretary here and this area was decorated in a much more traditional Japanese style. Rice paper walls and polished wooden floors were complimented by simple wooden furniture. There were several large cushions for sitting opposite the secretary's desk, along with two low tables on either side of the cushions. Straight ahead was a set of large shoji doors.
"May I offer you anything?" Both Kakashi and Sakura shook their head and he turned to his secretary. She had a warm smile, much like her boss. Her hair was longer than Carol's and she wore a hakama and kimono instead of a western suit. She bowed to them, then turned her attention to her boss. "Please make sure we aren't disturbed."
"Hai, Fushinji-sama." She bowed again before sitting back behind her desk.
He motioned them into his office, decorated like the outer area was. It boasted the same rice paper walls and polished wood floor. "I am something of a traditionalist." He explained, waving a hand around the room. There was very little in furniture except for his desk, which was little more than a table. It was perfectly clear except for a single framed photograph of a woman and two children. His chair was the only anachronistic item in the room. Large and leather, it dominated the space behind the desk.
The walls were covered in simple landscapes. Mountains, oceans and forests in varying seasons were framed simply and hung in groupings on each wall. There was one large window, currently covered with a white curtain, on the wall facing the street.
The two chairs opposite his desk were simple, but padded and comfortable. He waved a hand toward them before taking his seat. He smiled first at Sakura. "Mrs. Hatake, it is nice of you to join us."
Sakura smiled again. "I had only intended to sit in the lobby. I didn't mean to intrude on business."
He nodded his understanding. "Yes, it can be rather boring for those not interested in it. I hear you are here on your honeymoon? How long are you staying?"
"We're booked through the week, for now." She glanced at Kakashi, willing him to take over the conversation. She had no idea what cover he'd concocted about his 'business.'
"Oh, really? I wonder if you two might consider joining my family for a party we're holding tomorrow evening? It's nothing really big, only about fifty people or so." He looked from one to the other.
Kakashi glanced at her. She read it well. Smiling, she turned to Mr. Fushinji, "we would be delighted. I tend to be the keeper of our calendar, you see. Mostly because I am usually a bit busier than my husband."
"Oh, I understand! I do! My wife has more things going on than I could possibly count! Are you part of a womens' club?" He asked.
Sakura valiantly fought the instinctive twitch from her irritation. She forced a smile instead. "Oh, no. I'm sorry, I'm a doctor."
Mr. Fushinji's eyes widened. "Oh how wonderful for you! Mr. Hatake, you are a very lucky man."
Kakashi smiled and decided it was time to rescue Sakura. "Yes, I am." He lifted Sakura's hand and kissed it before turning back to Fushinji. "I haven't figured out how I managed to get so lucky." When he looked at her with warmth in his eyes, he didn't have to pretend. Sakura blushed.
Mr. Fushinji cleared his throat. "Yes, yes. Well, I do not wish to bore your lovely wife. I'll be having a bit of a meeting at the party tomorrow evening. Perhaps you would join me then? You may be interested in a business proposal I'll be bringing up."
"That would be great." Kakashi stood and Mr. Fushinji joined him, holding out his hand. Kakashi took it. "We'll look forward to seeing you then."
"I'll send directions around to your inn. Dinner is at eight. My wife will be so pleased to meet you, Mrs. Hatake." He leaned over and kissed Sakura's knuckles again.
She smiled. "I look forward to meeting her. Thank you again."
He escorted them out of the office. "Down the hall to the left. See you tomorrow night." He turned to his secretary. "Riko, please be sure to send directions to my house around to Mr. Hatake's inn rooms."
"Right away, sir." Riko replied and pulled paper and ink out of a drawer in her massive desk.
Kakashi and Sakura went down the hall and took deep breaths as the stepped outside. "That was too easy," Sakura said.
"Much too easy. What is his game?" He glanced over his shoulder and thought he caught a twitch of the curtain over Fushinji's window.
"Hmmm. I don't know. But I guess we're going to a dinner party, now, aren't we?" Sakura's mind was already working on the logistics of that when they started walking back towards the inn.
"Yes, I couldn't think of a way to politely get out of it."
Sakura shrugged. "No matter. I doubt we'd find anything of interest at his home, but I bet that 'little meeting' he mentioned might be enlightening."
Kakashi nodded. "Yes, it just might. Well, I think our surveillance tonight is still important, so we really should go back to the room for some rest."
Sakura smirked at him. "Are we really going to rest?"
He chuckled. "What do you think?"
She grinned. "I was hoping not."
"See, I am turning you into a pervert. Speaking of which…" he leaned in to whisper in her ear, "would you be interested in trying something a little…adventurous?"
She shivered and felt herself go moist at the thought. She felt her cheeks get red but she looked up at him and nodded. "Yes, I would."
He grinned. "Wonderful. In that case," he said as he pulled the room key out of his pocket. "Why don't you go back and get comfortable. I have a stop or two to make. I'll see you there."
Her heart sped up, she had to remember how to breathe when he kissed her goodbye. "I won't be long. Better hurry."
Sakura practically ran back to the room. This afternoon was going to be very interesting. Very interesting, indeed.
