Naruto belongs to Masashi Kishimoto. I don't make any profit from writing this.
I don't know for sure, but this might turn out to have eighteen chapters (nineteen if you count the epilogue). That might be dependent on chapter length and such. Either way this is reaching its end. Naruto will be back in chapter seventeen I think. Until then, enjoy this one.
“It's being taken care of. They won't see each other again.” Itachi was saying with finality, like he had any control over the people Sasuke could see. The tension in the car was thick and by the time Itachi had hung up, Sasuke was ready to toss himself out the window. “Well now I know how deep your stupidity lies. If all you wanted was sex, there are better alternatives.” Itachi said amusedly.
“Don't give me that bullshit, Itachi.” Sasuke snapped, turning a glare on his brother. “You and I both know it wasn't just sex.”
“Then what would you call it, Sasuke? Would you call it love, or just a way to get back at our father?” Itachi's voice was smooth, indifferent, but Sasuke knew his brother better than he knew himself sometimes. That tone was dangerous. “You won't see him again.” Itachi turned to look at him and Sasuke clenched his teeth on a sarcastic reply.
He didn't bother with an answer. He just looked back out the window and let the silence swallow up the tension between them.
*~*
Itachi's place was only a few hours from Sasuke's own apartment and it was surrounded by a smattering of small villages and fields. It was quiet here and although Sasuke hated being so far from his bar, he found it to be calming. Itachi's house was three floors with most of the rooms on the topmost floor and his chapel on the bottom with bathrooms, the living room, and the kitchen somewhere between. There was a wide stretch of grass in front of the house for people to park their cars when Itachi had service and there was a small pond in the back yard filled with koi and frogs.
It was a quiet place, and he should've been looking forward to staying for a while, but he was mostly apprehensive. He was going to be spending most of the week with Itachi and his wife, but Karin was going to be joining them soon and he didn't know how to act. After Naruto, everything just seemed duller in comparison.
The limo pulled into the wide driveway and had barely come to a stop when the front door swung open and his niece stumbled onto the porch. Her dark hair was done up in their usual braids and she was grinning as she waved both of her hands over her head. It took a few minutes for the driver to park and another few to get his bags out of the trunk before his niece was trying to climb up his body to give him a hug. She was still as small as the last time Sasuke had seen her.
She babbled to him as he juggled his bag and her in his arms, only half-listening to her words. It was only when she was pulled out of his arms that he was pulled out of his thoughts. Konan smiled at him when he finally looked up, although her eyes clearly showed her reluctance at letting him stay.
“Sasuke.” she said curtly.
“Konan.” he said back, just as short. He hefted his bag over his shoulder and motioned with a hand towards the stairs. “I'm going to unpack my things in the guest room. We can catch up when I'm finished.”
“All right.” she agreed easily. She turned to Itachi with a slightly more genuine smile to welcome him home and Sasuke took the opportunity to sneak upstairs to the room he'd be staying in. He folded his pajamas neatly into the dresser and hung his clothes in the closet. He shook out the blankets in case they were dusty and plugged his laptop into the electrical socket behind the bed. When everything was finished, he couldn't just sit around in his room all day, so he went back downstairs to face the music.
Konan and Itachi were sitting quietly on the couch in the sitting room while Tsuzu played with her toys in the next room. Sasuke slid the door shut behind him and took a minute to think of what he was going to say before taking a seat on one of the remaining chairs. He didn't know what to expect since he didn't know how much Konan was told, but If he knew his brother, Itachi hadn't spared her any details.
"How much do you know?" Sasuke asked them both, refusing to look away from them in case it made him seem weak. He wasn't embarrassed about the things he'd done and he wasn't going to regret them, but he could admit that he'd been reckless.
"I know about as much as Kakashi's told me, but I'd like to hear your side of the story, otouto." Itachi said softly, speaking to him like he was a child being punished. Sasuke scowled at him briefly before he turned away, his face heating up. “I know that you met Naruto-kun in the bar and I know that you slept with him.”
Konan stiffened on the couch next to him, but neither man paid her any attention for the moment. She obviously hadn't heard all of the details and wasn't happy about her own husband keeping her in the dark.
“I also know that you've still been seeing him, contrary to what his parents believe.” Itachi continued. He leaned forward and linked his fingers under his chin, elbows set on his knees as his eyes roamed over Sasuke's face, trying to see into his mind, no doubt. “What is so special about this boy that you would risk being arrested?” he finally asked.
Sasuke wanted an answer to that questions himself. He'd been caught from the very first moment he'd seen the teenager and he didn't know why. Nobody had held his interest and attention without any effort the way Naruto seemed to. He didn't think Itachi would understand any of that, so he kept it to himself.
“I don't know.” He settled on after a moment of silence. He rubbed his hands over his face and massaged his temples, because he could feel a migraine coming on and he just wanted to lay down. “I can't explain it, okay?” he sighed, meeting his brother's eyes across from him unflinchingly, hoping Itachi saw the truth in his words.
Itachi was a stoic man, just like their father. There were times where he teased Sasuke just to get a rise out of him and others where he was disappointed or mildly unhappy. Sasuke had never seen his brother look so resigned.
“Konan, can you give us a moment of privacy?” Itachi asked softly, turning to the woman next to him and pressing a kiss to her cheek.
“I'll be with Tsuzu if you need me.” Konan said back, nodding to them both as she got up and left the room quietly, sliding the doors shut behind her. Itachi waited until her footsteps had faded away to say what was on his mind.
“I'm only going to tell you this once, so listen well.” he said seriously, sitting forward and folding his hands on his knees. He fixed Sasuke with a sympathetic face.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Sasuke asked him. Cold sweat was beginning to form on the back of his neck and his heart started beating faster.
'I had affair with one of my teachers when I was Naruto-kun's age.” Itachi confessed as he met Sasuke's startled gaze. The older man licked his lips briefly and his head tipped forward, like he was trying to piece his thoughts together. “I'm sure it was more physical for him, but it meant more to me. He had more experience and I was eager to please him any way I could. Do you see what I'm saying?”
“It's not like that.” Sasuke snapped automatically.
“Isn't it? Sasuke, you're an adult. You've been around the block a time or two. You're probably the first person that boy's ever been in love with.”
“He's not in love with me.”
Itachi gave him a dubious look, but he didn't say anything to refute it. He just sighed and got up from the couch and straightened his suit jacket out.
“I can't tell you what to do, otouto. This decision is up to you, but just remember that you are hurting more people than just Naruto-kun and Karin. You'll also be hurting yourself.” Itachi said. He gave Sasuke one more look over his shoulder before making his way over to the door. His fingers had just touched the doorknob when Sasuke harshly barked out his name.
“Who was the teacher?” he asked, disgusted by his own curiosity. Thinking back now, Itachi and he had more or less shared the same teachers. There were only two that he could think of who would sleep with another man, but even when he expected it, the possible answer still left him with a sick feeling.
“It was Kakashi.”
*~*
Itachi's words were still ringing in his head even hours after the fact. He didn't know how much time he spent in the room just trying to make sense of the turmoil in his head. On the one hand, he was disgusted with himself for his blatant disregard for Karin's feelings in this situation. She'd done nothing but love him unconditionally and he was just throwing it back in her face. He wasn't a greedy person by nature, but he couldn't deny that there were moments where he chose to put his wants and needs above everyone else. He also wasn't stupid and he knew his brother was right.
Everything was going to blow up in his face eventually and he wouldn't have anyone to blame but himself.
*~*
The next two days seemed to drag on in his mind. He spent a lot of his time trading emails with Ino about the bar and playing games with his niece. He didn't have anything else to do and Itachi was watching him like a hawk, so it wasn't a surprise to either of them when Sasuke had managed to sneak out of the house late one night. It was difficult to tip toe through the house without being heard, the keys to the truck tucked away in his pants pocket. He made sure to lock up behind him and winced when the truck made a whining noise when he started it up. It was easy enough pulling out of the driveway, although he was sure he the curtains move as he started down the long driveway.
The town was only ten minutes from the house if you drove and forty five minutes if you walked. Sasuke parked on a corner next to a diner and walked a block to the nearest payphone. He stuck four quarters into the coin slot and dialed a number he was more than familiar with by now. He only hoped the blonde would answer it.
The line rang three times before someone picked up and Sasuke felt the tension melt out of him at the sound of Naruto's sleep-raspy voice.
"Hello?"
"Dobe." Sasuke breathed out, stepping closer to the payphone like he could somehow crawl through it to the teen's side. He pressed the phone closer against his ear and felt his mouth hitch into a smirk. Why have I missed his voice, he wondered.
"Sasuke." Naruto said back. "I've been waiting to hear from you, bastard."
Sasuke chuckled into the phone and absently twirled the cord in his fingers. When he realized he scowled and shook it free.
"I'm staying with my brother for a few months, until my father cools off.” he explained. “There's no phone here, so I'm going to have to spend some money at the pay phone."
He didn't say that Itachi had a perfectly good land line back at the house, only because he didn't want to get caught using it. His brother probably assumed he would be giving up on Naruto, but Sasuke hadn't decided yet.
"Then why did you leave your cell with me?" Naruto asked him, a hint of confusion in his voice. Sasuke felt himself smile again and quickly forced a scowl back into place.
"Iruka still has yours, right? I don't mind using a pay phone." he said softly.
"Oh."
"I'll still be paying the bill while I'm here, so feel free to use it. Just don't answer the numbers you don't recognize." Sasuke reasoned with him, though the man realized that Naruto would probably just answer the phone anyway if he thought Sasuke was calling from some other payphone.
"Okay." Naruto agreed easily enough.
There was moment of quiet as they both drifted into their own thoughts. Sasuke thought about what else to say to make it less awkward, but all he could think about was the look on Naruto's face when Itachi had come to get him. Looking back now, he seemed startled and a little frightened by his appearance.
"Ah. I'm getting the feeling you think my brother's yakuza." Sasuke said bemusedly. It wouldn't be the first time someone thought his brother was a gangster and it wouldn't be the last. Itachi just had that kind of aura. All through high school and into his college years people expected him to he a gang leader and were surprised when he turned out to be just socially awkward.
"He's not?!" Naruto exclaimed. "Why does he dress like that if he's not yakuza?"
"He's an ass." Sasuke snorted. "But he's a minster, in case you were wondering. He owns a shrine down here that he runs with his wife."
A fucking minister, Sasuke thought darkly, and wasn't that a surprise. For as long as he'd known Itachi, his brother hadn't given any indication what he believed in. Sasuke always thought he was an atheist. There'd been a period in his brother's life where he dressed in long, black cloaks and wore purple nail polish. Their cousin Obito had been a strange influence on them both and Fugaku didn't take lightly to it. They hadn't seen him in years.
"Do they have any kids?" Naruto asked.
"A three year old, actually. The girl on my phone. Her name's Tsuzu." Sasuke told him easily. He smiled softly at the though of her, so different from the other members of the family. She was a lot like their mother, always laughing and catching them off guard with her wide smiles.
"I thought she was yours at first, bastard." Naruto laughed. It was clear that he was relieved. Truthfully the thought of children scared the crap out of him. There were times when he thought he'd turn out just like his father, cold and controlling, but Itachi had been good to both Konan and Tsuzu despite the way they'd come together.
Sasuke heard footsteps behind him, but he didn't turn to look until they stopped directly behind him. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up and his fingers clenched on the phone. When he glanced behind him, Itachi was staring back with one of his eyebrows raised, his keys dangling from his hand. There was enough space between them, though, that he probably couldn't hear anything Sasuke was saying.
"Fuck, he found me." the man sighed. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his fingers and sighed into the receiver.
"Huh?" Naruto demanded.
"Itachi's been keeping tabs on me ever since Kakashi called him.” Sasuke told him uselessly. His stomach did a back flip at the next words out of his mouth, but he was feeling vindictive so he didn't stop them. “They used to date, you know?" he grunted.
"Wait, what?" Naruto sputtered.
"I'll call you again in a few days. See ya, dobe." Sasuke hung up the phone on Naruto's sputtering and turned to face his brother with a scowl on his face. Itachi crossed his arms over his chest and tilted his head to the side.
“Are you satisfied?” he asked. Sasuke didn't have to ask what he meant. He was perfectly aware how immature he was being. Itachi sighed and shook his head like he didn't know what to do with him. “Get in the truck and go back to the house. We'll talk about this in the morning.”
Sasuke opened his mouth to tell the man that he wasn't a child anymore, but the look on Itachi's face quickly shut him up. It was obvious that Itachi wasn't going to let him say his peace, so he kept his mouth shut and went back to the truck and followed his brother back down the road towards the house.
He jerked off before he went to sleep that night, thinking about the sound of Naruto's voice, the taste of his skin, and moaned the blonde's name into his pillow when he came.
Sasuke didn't have any allusions about his feelings now. He wasn't in denial about the way Naruto made him want things. He though about the situation he was in and felt torn. Ultimately he could drop everything in his life for a teenager he'd only known for a few weeks or he could go ahead with his father's plans and marry a woman he'd been with for over a year but didn't love.
He had to choose.
