Neji sat silently, his thoughts racing. He was only vaguely aware of Naruto prattling on about something or other. ‘No wonder she was so upset last night. She’d spent time with him, talked with him…’ About what, he had no idea.
A loud crash interrupted his thoughts. Neji’s head spun around. Naruto was already down the hall. “Sakura-chan!” Neji took off after him.
Sakura was in a heap next to her bed. “I’m sorry…” she muttered as Neji and Naruto both slipped their arms around her, helping her up. “I just wanted some water. I didn’t think I-”
“You need to get your strength back. Tsunade-sama said you need at least a few days of bed rest. Naruto and I are both here to help look after you.”
Sakura smiled as they got her back into bed. “Just like the first time, Neji-kun,” she said softly. “You and Naruto… looking after me…”
“I’ll get the water,” Naruto offered, heading out.
Sakura looked at Neji with a happy, albeit slightly groggy, smile. He looked away. “Neji-kun? What is it?”
“Nothing,” he replied, his eyes meeting hers, his unreadable mask firmly in place.
“No,” Sakura said slowly, despite the exhaustion, “it’s not nothing. Tell me.”
“Sakura,” Neji said firmly, “it’s nothing that can’t wait until you’re feeling better.”
“Neji-kun-”
“Here’s your water, Sakura-chan!” Naruto handed her a large bottle with the cap already unscrewed. She drank slowly, aware of both sets of eyes on her.
“Thank you. Naruto, could you give us a few minutes, please?”
“Um… sure,” he replied, looking at her for reassurance that she was alright. She gave him a slight nod and he walked out, closing the door lightly behind him.
“I’d rather know now,” she said.
“Sakura,” Neji sighed, “I’m not doing this with you, not right now. We can discuss it when you’re well.”
“Well I’m not going to get well thinking I’ve upset you because I’ll be spending what little energy I have worrying about how badly I’ve screwed up.”
She was obviously still totally exhausted. She looked as though she’d fall over any moment. Yet Neji knew the telling fire in her eyes well enough to know that she wouldn’t let it drop until she was satisfied.
He inhaled deeply, then said, “Why didn’t you tell me that you were with Sasuke last night?”
She sighed. “I wasn’t ‘with’ Sasuke last night. He was waiting for me at the hospital when I went to see Ino. It wasn’t planned. He asked me if we could talk, and I said yes and so we went for a walk.
“Honestly there really wasn’t much to talk about. The whole thing was very awkward. We ended up at the old red bridge, which only made me think about that night with you… but anyway, he was asking questions, mostly like ‘what are you thinking about?’ which was odd and totally uncharacteristic and I wasn’t about to tell him anyway because all I was thinking about was you. He apologized for hurting me when he left the way he did, and then he walked me home. Naruto was already here because he had my key from that morning. Naruto came in to talk and you arrived shortly after.”
Sakura sighed again; clearly just this conversation was very draining. ‘She is too damn stubborn,’ Neji thought.
“So I didn’t bring it up because frankly I was already on overload with everything and I just wanted to stop talking about Sasuke and how I was handling it. Yes, I know I fell apart last night, but I needed to because he’s my teammate and my friend and I still care about him and all these years I’ve spent worrying and wondering if he’s alive have taken a toll and seeing him and knowing…
“I’m sorry. If I really thought it was that big of a deal, I would have said something right away. I wasn’t keeping it from you. I’d have no reason to.”
Neji was silent while he tried to sort through the thoughts in his head. “Thank you, for telling me now,” he said softly. She smiled, her eyelids clearly growing heavy again.
“Get some rest. I’ll be just outside if you need me.”
Sakura nodded. She slipped down under the covers and fell asleep almost instantly.
Neji kissed her softly before going back to talk more with Naruto, feeling significantly lighter.

“Naruto!” Neji whispered loudly, shaking the sleeping blond fiercely.
“Huh? What? I’m up… I’m up,” he muttered, swatting Neji’s hand away as he rolled himself against the back of the sofa.
“Don’t make me do something you’re going to regret,” Neji warned.
Naruto rolled over, miscalculating the distance, right off the sofa. “Ow!”
“Quiet!” Neji said sternly, “Sakura’s still sleeping.”
“What time is it?” he asked, rubbing his head.
“7:30 AM. I have a meeting with Hokage-sama at eight. Can you stay here with Sakura until I get back?”
“Yeah, of course,” Naruto replied. “Make sure you ask about Kakashi-sensei. I want to visit him later if I can.”
Neji nodded, heading out the door.
‘This is going to be a long day…’

“Sakura-chan, how are you feeling?” Naruto asked as Sakura opened her eyes.
Sakura turned her head to see Naruto sitting in the chair next to her bed. He must’ve come in when Neji had left earlier. And one of the two of them had, at some point, changed her out of her clothes and into the pink nightdress she was now wearing. ‘I really hope that was Neji,’ she thought, turning pink. ‘I mean I love Naruto and all, but still…’
“Better, I think. I still feel very drained, but I don’t ache so much anymore. How’s Kakashi-sensei?”
“Baa-chan says he’ll be fine, but he’s going to be sore for a good few weeks.” Sakura looked away, her jaw locked. “She was impressed, you know,” he offered, seeing her dejected expression.
“What do you mean?”
“Tsunade-baa-chan. She said she was really surprised at how much progress you made in that time span, and that she was surprised you hadn’t fainted sooner. She said she was very impressed. Anyway, she took over right after you fainted, and said you’d already made excellent progress and there wasn’t much more she could do.” Sakura nodded, taking in all the information. “She did say that he was developing an infection, but she already put him on anti-whatsits and said that he’d be fine with some rest.”
“Thank God for that.”
“You saved his life, Sakura-chan,” Naruto said, the admiration evident in his crystal blue eyes.
Sakura burst into tears. Naruto was out of his seat and on the bed next to her, holding her in his arms once more. “Sakura-chan, what is it? What’s wrong?”
“If I… if… if we’d lost him, Naruto, I-”
“Don’t even think about that,” he said firmly, “you did save him. Kakashi-sensei had total faith in you, as did I. We always do.”
Naruto’s genuine words only made her cry harder. “I… I really didn’t think I could. I was so scared, Naruto… I don’t think I’ve ever been more scared in my life. He’s so important to us, and to be responsible for his life in the most literal way, I…”
“Sakura-chan,” said Naruto, reassuringly, “you were great. Better than great. Even old Baa-chan said so. Stop feeling so bad, please?”
Sakura rested her head on his shoulder. “Thank you, for coming. I couldn’t have done it without you there.”
“There’s nowhere else I would have been. You know I’ll always be here when you need me. I love you, Sakura-chan.”
“I love you too,” she smiled, turning her face up to see him. He was grinning ear to ear; his fingers brushed away her tears.
“Want breakfast? I make great eggs.”
“Scrambled?” Sakura asked.
“My specialty,” he smiled happily, jumping up. “Want something to drink?”
“Water is fine. I can get it,” she said, pulling back the blanket.
“No, you stay put. I’m bringing it to you. Breakfast in bed!”
Sakura rolled her eyes, but smiled widely. She watched him disappear through the hallway and heard the banging in the kitchen.
Her thoughts drifted back to her conversation with Neji the night before. ‘He really thought I was keeping it from him?’ she wondered. ‘I didn’t bring it up because it wasn’t an issue.’ The nasty voice deep inside her, the one that forced her to be honest with herself said, ‘Okay, it’s not an issue, but it’s ‘not-an-issue’ you’ve been thinking about a lot.’
It was true. She’d spent the better part of the previous night thinking about that strange conversation with Sasuke and how different everything seemed. ‘Maybe Neji had every right to be upset,’ she thought sadly. ‘I never meant to hurt him.’
She sighed. At least they resolved everything. She didn’t remember him actually coming to bed, but at some point she awoke, wrapped tightly in his warm embrace, feeling peaceful and safe. Upon waking this morning, however, he was gone. “He must’ve had a meeting with Shishou…” she guessed aloud.
Kakashi floated back into her mind. He was so pale, so frail looking yesterday. ‘I really didn’t think I could handle it. Kakashi-sensei… I love him so much, to think that he would have died if I fell apart…’ She shook her head, the thought away with it. “I’ll see him as soon as I’m able.”
“What?” Naruto asked, entering the room with a tray full of scrambled eggs, toast, something that she was sure once resembled bacon, rice, and water.
“Just talking to myself. Naruto-kun, this looks wonderful!”
“Yep, yep. Breakfast is the one meal I don’t screw up. Except the bacon. Sorry about that. If you don’t want yours, I’ll eat it.”
“It’s fine,” she laughed. He set the tray down in front of her, taking one plate in his hand before sitting back down.
“Well it’s bound to be better than the last time I cooked for you anyway,” he said, trying to hide the fact that he was chewing.
“Well that certainly wouldn’t take much,” she smiled. She picked up the chopsticks, wincing painfully.
“What is it, Sakura-chan?”
“Just channeled too much chakra yesterday. It makes my hands stiff.”
Naruto stopped eating and reached over, grabbing her hands in his. He began to massage them, paying particular attention to her fingers. Sakura could feel the blood rushing back in, the color returning. The cramping lessened significantly. “Better?” he asked.
“Much,” she said honestly. “Thank you.”
“Of course, Sakura-chan. Now eat up my great breakfast before it gets cold!”
The two continued to converse lightly while eating. Sakura did end up giving her blackened bacon to Naruto, who seemed not to care it was burned beyond edibility. She set her plate back on the tray and took a long sip of water. “Thank you so much, Naruto.”
He beamed. She sighed. “You’re looking tired again,” he replied, looking at her with concern.
“I am a little,” she admitted, trying to stifle a yawn. “Do you mind if I lay down for a while?”
“That’s what you’re supposed to do, Sakura-chan, get rest. I’ll be out in the living room. I’m just going to watch a movie or something. I won’t in here because I don’t want to disturb you.”
“Thank you Naruto. For everything.”
Naruto smiled. He waited for her to slip herself down onto her back before kissing her forehead. He gathered the tray and left.

“From what I’ve been able to gather, the attack was by Rock shinobi,” Tsunade said. “Yugao’s been conscious since this morning and was able to give a fair amount of detail as to the attack.”
“How are Genma and Kakashi?” Shikamaru asked.
“Genma’s injuries were very severe. He’ll be in the hospital another month at least, however he should make a full recovery. Kakashi suffered a chidori burn, but will also make a full recovery, thanks to Sakura.”
Shikamaru shook his head. Neji understood all too well. The attack that should never have happened, the whole damn situation escalating, Sakura being put into the position she was yesterday… “Chidori… did he say how-”
“Of his own doing,” Tsunade finished pointedly, “an accident.” Her stern look at Neji left no room for further argument.
She continued, “The fact that Konoha ninja were attacked on a mission completely unrelated to anything regarding Sunagakure means that this isn’t just a grudge against Sand,” Neji stated. “We have to consider the fact that Konoha could be a main target in whatever scheme this is.”
“What doesn’t make sense is that the attackers would be Rock shinobi,” Shikamaru said, frowning. “Correct me if I’m wrong, Tsunade-sama, but Sunagakure has always gotten on very well with Iwagakure. Konoha’s been indifferent, not allied, not enemies, but I have a hard time believing that Earth Country would attack Wind Country without a good reason. And were that the case, why drag Fire into it?”
Tsunade shook her head. “This is where we’re at, boys. I’ve tried to fit the pieces together and keep coming up empty. Shikamaru, you’re the puzzle solver here.”
“I need some time to think,” he replied.
“Go. Clear your head. Get fresh perspective, whatever you need. The elders have already been informed of the situation, as well as the ANBU squads not away on missions. In the meantime, I want to keep what’s discussed here quiet, understood?”
Both Neji and Shikamaru nodded.
“Alright, Nara, get out,” she said simply. Shikamaru stood, nodded at Tsunade and Neji respectively before leaving. Neji was about to stand when Tsunade said, “Sit.”
Neji lowered himself back into his seat and waited. “Your cousin, Hyuuga Hinata, does she have medic training?”
Neji was surprised at the question, but answered, “Yes, although what level her skill is, I couldn’t tell you.”
“Tell her to meet with Shizune later this afternoon,” Tsunade ordered.
‘She’s training up medic-nins,’ Neji realized immediately. ‘She’s anticipating attack.’
“That will be all.”
Neji nodded at her dismissal and took his leave.

“I want to know what exactly is going on…” Sakura heard a familiar voice echo somewhere in the recesses of her fog-filled mind. She could feel her body coming alive, being pulled from semi-consciousness to full awareness. Her eyelids fluttered before finally prying open. She scanned the room, taking in her surroundings before hearing a voice coming from the living room.
“Sasuke, I don’t see what the problem is,” she could hear Naruto say offhandedly.
‘What is he doing here?’ she wondered. She threw back the coverlet and was about to swing her legs over the edge of the bed, alerting them both to her present state of consciousness, but stopped at hearing what Sasuke said next.
“He is not one of us. He never has been. He never will be.” Sasuke’s voice was filled with anger. ‘What is he talking about?’ Sakura wondered.
He continued, “What makes him presume it’s any business of his? He had no right being there yesterday, and to act as though he understands the team, understands her, and you, so vastly much more than I do…”
Sakura could hear Naruto sigh loudly. “He hasn’t replaced you, nor would he. For you to even think that is just stupid. You have no idea how hard it’s been on us, you being gone. It tore Sakura-chan up more than I think you could even imagine- no, let me finish! It was hard, incredibly hard, on both of us.
“We had to try to find a way to live without you, feeling this constant, gaping hole each and every single day, feeling like we failed you. But somehow, through our own bonds of friendship as well as those forged with others, we managed. Now you’ve been gone for three years, and a lot has changed since then. How Sakura-chan and I feel about you hasn’t changed. You’re our teammate and our friend and that will never change, no matter what. But you can’t expect us to just dismiss those bonds because you’re back.”
“That’s not what I’m saying,” she heard Sasuke reply with his usual “tch.” His anger was less apparent, his growing frustration obvious. “It’s-”
“Look… Neji is a very good friend to me; he has been for a long time. We train together, we’ve gone on missions together, and we spend a lot of our free time together since I’m dating his cousin. Neji is also Sakura-chan’s boyfriend, and he really loves her. The comments you made about Sakura-chan were true, in the past, but she’s not like that now. She’s really strong and confident. Of course Neji would get upset by you calling her weak! He knows that she’s anything but!
“As for yesterday, she was really scared because she was made solely responsible for saving the life of someone that she loves, and I don’t think any less of her for feeling that way. It’s easy to protect someone; it’s hard having to save someone’s life as he’s already dying, especially someone that you really love. I can’t even imagine being in that position. Sakura-chan needed the people she’s closest to, who love her most, so that she could find the strength to do what she had to. Neji had to be there, just like me, to give her love and support. That is why he was there. Not because he’s trying to take your place,” Naruto finished.
Sakura was stunned. ‘Sasuke thinks Neji’s trying to take his place?’ Her mind raced, trying to process everything. ‘Is he jealous of Neji?’ It was difficult to get the full picture when she couldn’t see their expressions and postures. She had no idea how Sasuke, usually only readable by body language, was taking this.
She swung her legs over the edge of the bed and slowly shifted her weight unto them, grateful they would support her even if only for a few minutes. She padded lightly to door, already ajar, and opened it slightly wider.
Looking down the hall, she could see Sasuke standing, his back to her, and around him little bits of orange that must be Naruto, most likely sitting in the chair.
She heard Sasuke mutter something; she strained to hear, but couldn’t make out the words.
“Yes,” Naruto replied, most likely answering whatever it was Sasuke had asked.
Sakura could see Sasuke’s shoulders drop with a sigh before he stepped out of her line of sight. She quickly concealed herself behind the door in case Naruto looked in that direction.
Before anything more could be said, the doorbell rang. Sakura quickly got herself back into bed, mussing her hair and trying to look as though she’d just awoken.
“Hinata-chan!” Naruto cried happily. She could hear Hinata’s squeal as Naruto no doubt picked her up in a tremendous hug.
‘He hasn’t even seen her at all since yesterday…’ she realized with a start, feeling a little guilty. Of course it wasn’t like they didn’t see each other all the time when they weren’t on missions, but ‘maybe he cancelled something important because of me.’
“I came to see Sakura,” she said. “Oh, hello, um… Sasuke.”
“I think she might be asleep right now but-”
“It’s okay, Naruto!” Sakura called. “Come on back, Hinata-chan!”
Naruto and Hinata walked in, Sasuke hanging behind in the shadow of the doorway. Sakura smiled brightly at her two guests before her eyes drifted to meet Sasuke’s. She gave an imperceptible nod which Sasuke rightfully took to mean he had permission to enter.
“Kurenai-sensei told me this morning what had happened yesterday,” Hinata said quietly. Sakura scooted over on her bed, making space for Hinata to sit down next to her legs. “I’m very sorry about Kakashi-sensei, but I hear he’ll be alright.” Sakura nodded. “How are you?”
“Better. From what I hear, Shishou said I just over taxed myself, not allowing any breaks. I guess I did get a little careless, but…”
“I would have done the same thing,” Hinata said in earnest.
Sakura grinned, casting a glance up at Naruto, who was standing right behind Hinata. “Why didn’t you wake me sooner? I’ve been asleep since breakfast, so what…at least four hours?”
“Baa-chan said you needed rest, and that I get you anything you needed in the meantime. You were tired, so sleep it was, and I figured you’d wake on your own when you were ready. Sorry, Sakura-chan, but Tsunade-baa-chan’s still scarier than you, so I’d rather have you mad at me than her.”
The two girls laughed. Sasuke, who had entered the room, now resembled an inanimate object, his back leaning stiffly against her wardrobe with arms crossed over his chest. ‘Why even bother to come in then?’ Sakura thought with irritation.
“I didn’t wake you, did I?’ Hinata asked in a small voice.
“No, I had just started to wake up when the doorbell rang. I was having a really strange dream about birds and snakes and this massive toad that kept trying to stamp on everything in sight…” she said, her eyes meeting Naruto’s. His blue eyes flickered; he caught her meaning.
The exchange, although not understood, did not go unnoticed.
“I sometimes have strange dreams like that too, when my chakra is really low,” Hinata said.
Sakura grimaced as she flexed her hands, still a bit painful even after Naruto’s massage that morning. “Oh, I brought this for you!” Hinata exclaimed suddenly, fishing through her pocket. She pulled out a small container. “It’s an analgesic ointment. It’ll help ease the stiffness until your chakra flow is normal again.”
Sakura smiled in genuine gratitude. ‘This is why he loves her so much. She’s so much like him.’ Hinata took the ointment and rubbed it onto Sakura’s fingers and hands, rubbing much the way Naruto had earlier. Sasuke and Naruto both watched the exchange between the two girls. “Thanks, Hinata-chan. You are so wonderfully thoughtful.”
Hinata, of course, turned beet red.
The doorbell rang again. Wordlessly, Sasuke stood upright and left to answer the door.
“You’re welcome,” Hinata said shyly. Naruto gave her shoulders an affectionate squeeze, kissing the top of her head.
“What are you doing here?” Naruto and Sakura exchanged a look at hearing Neji’s displeased tone.
“That should be obvious,” was Sasuke’s cold reply.
“Oh shit,” Naruto muttered. He left to play mediator.
“Neji-nii-san and Sasuke don’t get along?” Hinata asked innocently.
“Mmm, not so much, no.”
“He’s very happy, you know,” she said, smiling. “I’ve never seen him like this before, and it’s nice. He really cares for you.”
Sakura smiled. ‘So he’s been telling others, I see.’ “I care for him very deeply as well.”
“Well I’m happy for both of you.”
Before Sakura could say ‘thanks,’ the three boys walked in, Naruto and Neji first, Sasuke slightly behind them, glaring at the back of Neji’s head.
“Hinata-sama, Hokage-sama asked me to pass on the message that you meet with her assistant, Shizune, this afternoon,” Neji stated with a nod. His eyes then met Sakura’s. He smiled, walked to her bed, leaned down as his palm found her cheek and kissed her. “How are you feeling?”
“Better,” she replied with a smile. “Your cousin just brought me an ointment to help my hands.”
“So Uncle had said,” Neji said to Hinata.
“Did Hokage-sama specify a time?” Hinata asked quietly.
“No, she just said sometime this afternoon.” Neji assumed Shizune would sit down and speak with his cousin and begin training the following day, if that was indeed what Tsunade had in mind.
He took a seat on the bed, opposite Hinata, and wrapped an arm around Sakura’s shoulders. She leaned into him. Naruto took a spot on the other side of Sakura’s legs, leaving Sasuke to stand alone.
“You might as well come join, Sasuke,” Naruto said, motioning to the only unoccupied space on her bed.
“I’m fine,” Sasuke replied tersely, having taken up position against the wardrobe again and remaining firmly in place, his cold, dark eyes staring intently.
The tension in the room was palpable. Naruto cast a concerned glance at Sakura, whose eyes were darting between him and Sasuke as she leaned against Neji. Neji kept his eyes focused on Hinata and Naruto, blatantly ignoring Sasuke’s presence entirely. Hinata, while realizing that something was obviously amiss, had no idea what.
“I could make everyone lunch before I have to leave,” Hinata offered, trying to break the tension.
“Yay!” Naruto shouted happily, lifting the mood at least slightly. “Sakura-chan, Hinata-chan makes the best homemade ramen!”
“Even better than Ichiraku’s?” Sakura asked a devilish grin on her face.
“Um…” he started, casting Hinata a nervous glance, obviously wanting to be honest, but not wanting to hurt her feelings.
“It’s okay, Naruto-kun,” Hinata said quietly, still smiling.
That seemed to make up his mind. “Yep, even better than the old man’s!”
Sakura, and even Neji, couldn’t suppress a laugh. Only Sasuke remained indifferent.
Hinata stood and excused herself to the kitchen, Naruto trailing after her, leaving Sakura, Neji and Sasuke alone. The tension suddenly flared again, more noticeable than ever.
Neji decided to ignore Sasuke’s presence altogether. He rested his cheek against Sakura’s head. “Tsunade-sama said Kakashi is doing much better today.”
“Did she?” Sakura asked, turning to look at him. “Did she say how-”
“An accident, so it would seem. Apparently he started to mobilize his chakra into his hand, but was attacked before he could complete it, so his weapon was turned on him.”
She nodded in comprehension. Unconsciously, her gaze fixed itself on Sasuke. Her green eyes met his black ones and she suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of shame. She said quietly, “I’m so sorry, Sasuke.”
Neji turned his head to the other man, saw his eyes locked firmly on Sakura. Though undetectable to the casual observer, Neji could swear Sasuke’s entire demeanor changed in that moment, even if only minutely.
Sasuke shrugged, as though to say ‘it’s fine.’
“No,” Sakura said forcefully, obviously better at reading Uchiha Sasuke than Neji was, “I had no right to attack you as I did, or to think… I’m truly very sorry, Sasuke.”
“Sakura,” Sasuke replied, his eyes still concentrated solely on her, “it’s alright. Forget it.”
“He’s right,” Neji said carefully, breaking the spell between them. “You have no reason to feel badly for what happened. Anyone would have thought the same thing and reacted the same way given the circumstances.”
Sasuke’s eyes, now fixed on Neji, narrowed in cold anger; Neji stared confidently back at him, as though daring him to say something.
Sakura, evidently unaware of the exchange going on between the two, threw the blankets off her legs, swung them around, and started to stand.
“What are you doing?” asked a concerned Neji.
“Getting up. Stretching. Shishou said rest, but that doesn’t mean staying in bed literally all day, at least if it’s not absolutely necessary, which it’s not.” She stood up; suddenly, for the first time, acutely aware of how little she was actually wearing. Hidden under the blankets, the nightdress looked like a pretty tank top, but upon standing, she realized it did little more than cover her ass. “Um…” she bit her lip, turning red.
Neji couldn’t help but notice, much to his growing anger, Sasuke eyeing Sakura intently. He caught sight of her robe, lying on the floor near Sasuke’s feet, and grabbed it. “Here,” he said softly, holding it out for her to step into.
“Thanks. I wasn’t thinking,” she said with an embarrassed laugh. Neji, of course, knew that she wouldn’t have been embarrassed in the least were it not for the (unwelcome) presence of Sasuke. “Lunch should be ready,” she said, heading out the door.
Neji started to follow but stopped when he felt his arm grasped. He turned to face Sasuke, waiting for him to speak. “You don’t need to coddle her. She’s not a child.”
His white eyes bore hard into Sasuke’s black ones. “It’s not coddling. It’s called ‘caring,’ something that you know little about.” He pulled his arm forcefully out of Sasuke’s firm grip, and headed down the hall.
‘Uchiha apparently forgets that I see nearly everything,’ Neji mused, as he saw Sasuke’s features twisted in fury behind him.
