Please review! I wanna know what you think!~~~~Gaara kicked a can and watched as it scuttled across the dark street. After Mina had told him she could read minds he had mumbled something to her about needing to get dinner and fled the apartment. He didn’t like the idea of having his mind read and there was something about the way she looked at him that made him feel uncomfortable. Damn it! He’d been walking around for almost two hours and he still didn’t want to return home. Walking slowly down a back alley he tried to figure out what she had been talking about when she said she would give him what he wanted. A slow blush crept over his cheeks as he thought back to telling her he didn’t like girls. Now, not only was she not afraid of him, she was probably up in the room laughing at him. Laughing because he was gay, and he had run from her, and because she knew what he wanted most in the world when he didn’t know himself. That’s why he had left. He hated that he didn’t know what he wanted and she did. ’Maybe it’s blood? I haven’t killed anyone in awhile. Was she going to deliver someone for me to murder? I don’t think that’s what I really want though... Maybe it’s Naruto? Could she have sensed that? If she loves Sasuke as much as it seems, she must know they’re together. I can’t see why she’d try to help me win him. I guess it could be sleep. Naruto said something about her making me go to sleep. I wouldn’t say it’s what I want most in the world but...’He didn’t have a chance to continue that thought though because the world around him had suddenly grown very calm and that made him uneasy. Another assassination attempt? He wheeled around ready for an attack but nothing came. He took a few steps back toward the street and listened. Oh shit! He had left Mina alone. What if an assassin came for him and found her instead? Since she was an Uchiha he had no doubt she was a capable fighter, but she had looked so weak when he’d left. What if she couldn’t defend herself and they killed her? He turned and ran back toward his apartment as fast as he could. If anything happened to her, the ice prince would blame him and vow to avenge his sister’s death and then Naruto would no longer be his friend. Of anything in the world that scared him, that scared him the most. ~~~Although Neji had been the first to spot him, Naruto got to Sasuke first and immediately dropped to his knees. Sasuke had fallen asleep, but his ninja training had made his reflexes fast, so before he’d even opened his eyes to see who it was, he had thrown a punch directly at Naruto. It caught him in the stomach and he doubled over in pain. “Sasuke, it’s me.” He managed to wince out through the pain. “Naruto? Oh damn, I thought you were Itachi coming back to get me.” “Did they get him?” Naruto asked, rolling himself back up on to his knees. “Did who get him?” “The people that were after Itachi. Did they capture him?” “How did you know that people were after Itachi? I thought he was just trying to get rid of me.” Sasuke seemed a little off, and Naruto couldn’t help but notice. He seemed different... less angry... “Mina told us people were after him and she told us where you were. She...” Suddenly he didn’t know how to continue. He hadn’t really considered what he was going to tell Sasuke about Mina. He knew the dark haired boy better than anyone, and he knew that Sasuke wasn’t just going to accept that he had a sister, no matter how he tried to explain it. “The witch? Did you escape?” “Not exactly. She’s a good witch, and she spoke with your brother while he was unconscious. She can read minds.” “A good witch? She didn’t hurt you?” “No, she wouldn’t hurt me. Itachi gave me to her so she could try and release the Kyuubi but she never planned on helping him. She’s back in the village with Gaara. We need to get you back there. You look terrible, are you ok to walk?” “I don’t need coddled.” Sasuke shot back as he struggled to his feet. He staggered a bit and Naruto hooked his arm around his waist, bringing their faces close together. At first his friend struggled and seemed distant but slowly he melted into him and after just a few steps Sasuke took the opportunity to pull him into a deep kiss. For Naruto, all of his relief in seeing his friend again, and the stress of the horrible week, and the fear he had been holding inside were poured into the embrace and at that moment he couldn’t get enough. They stood under the dessert moon kissing and blindly groping, trying to remember what the other felt like and tasted like. When he finally had to part their lips so they could both get some air, Neji coughed to remind them he was still standing there. “Umm... I hate to break up this closet scene repeat, but we need to get back. Mina didn’t seem too fond of Gaara and I would hate for her to try and… uhh... or him to... I think it’s best if we get back there quickly.” Naruto didn’t want to stop kissing Sasuke, or to let him go, but he realized what Neji said was true. It was obvious to Naruto that Neji was just as unsure about how to speak to Sasuke about Mina as he was. There seemed to be an unspoken idea that they would not mention her Uchiha ties until she had done so herself. Neji started heading back in the direction from which they had run, and Naruto lingered back for just a second. “I love you. I don’t know what I would have done if anything had happened to you.” He whispered into Sasuke’s ear. “...” Sasuke said nothing but placed a light kiss on his cheek. ~~~~Even though Neji was walking ahead of them, he was using Byakugan to keep an eye on them. He was glad Mina wasn't around because he had a feeling that the jealousy he was feeling could not be easily masked. It wasn't that he had any interest in breaking them up, it was just that over the past few days he had enjoyed having Naruto mostly to himself, and before that, despite the horribleness of the situation, he had enjoyed Sasuke’s advances. He pushed those feelings away to the back of his mind and thought of something more pleasant; Shikamaru waiting for him at home. He would need to write to him soon to let him know he was safe. He would just have to keep all of these other feelings secret. Some things are better left unsaid. ~~~~As they made their way back, Naruto wondered to himself why Sasuke didn’t say “I love you” in return. He supposed after the way this week had gone it was to be expected. After what Itachi had done to him, it might be awhile before he was able to trust anyone again. He hoped with all of his heart that that was the problem. He had silent fears when it came to the relationship between Sasuke and Itachi, but for the time being they would remain unspoken. As a matter of fact, he needed to try to hide those thoughts from Mina as well. As they walked in the stillness of the sand, he practiced the thought blocking techniques he had been taught. If Mina read his suspicions, there was no telling how she would feel about Sasuke. No, this would just have to remain his secret. ~~~~When the door to the apartment opened and Gaara stepped inside, he wasn’t too surprised to see two bodies lying on the floor and Mina still sitting by the window where he left her. She didn’t move to look at him. “I know it’s you, Gaara. They’re not dead, they’re asleep.” “Are you ok?” He knew there was no real concern in his voice, but he did feel like he should ask her something to that effect. “I’m fine. It only took them a second to realize I wasn’t you, and then they thought I was a competing assassin so they decided to kill me anyway. I prefer not to kill when I don’t have to, so I just put them to sleep. I figured you would deal with them when you got back. I hope that’s ok.” “Ummm... yeah. You’re sure you’re all right?” Gaara was a little surprised by her nonchalance about the whole thing, but more surprised by her admission about not liking to kill. That could be a serious weakness. “Yes, I’m sure. I don’t need to be coddled.” “I’ve never “coddled” anyone in my life, so you can be certain that’s not what I’m doing now. It’s just that a normal person might be troubled that someone has attempted to murder them. That’s all.” He knew his answer sounded snippy but he didn't care. “You and I aren’t normal Gaara. Itachi has tried to kill me or sent people to kill me more times than I can count. Assassination attempts are pretty much par for my course. I’m glad you came back though. There are more on the way.” “How do you know?” “I questioned them in their sleep. People are a lot more open to talking when they are being confronted by their deepest fears… which in this case, happened to be you. If they don’t return within the hour, your brother is planning on sending four more ninjas to take their place.” Gaara tried to hide the hurt that he felt might show on his face, but then remembered that Mina could just read his mind anyway so he gave up. It shouldn’t be seen as a sign of weakness that he was disturbed his brother was still trying to kill him after all this time. “Gaara?” “Yeah.” “You’re screaming those thoughts at me. I’m not trying to read you, I swear. Anyway, Itachi is my brother and I understand how it can hurt. Unfortunately that’s just how it is when you’re different. People are scared of what they don’t understand, and when what they don’t understand is a part of them, a part of their blood... it’s even worse.” Gaara pondered what Mina had just said. He hated that she thought she understood him. It was infuriating. It was no small wonder Naruto and Hyuuga would think she was great, but he could see through her. She was just like Sasuke. Condescending. He was not going to continue letting her push him around. “What is it that I want?” He said abruptly changing the subject and staring straight into her eyes. “Huh? “You said you knew. Tell me. I don’t care if you give it to me; I just want to know what it is. If what you say is correct, I’ll tell you what I know about my seal. If what you say is incorrect, you’ll be sorry for bothering me with this.” “Is that a threat?” Mina glared back at Gaara narrowing her eyes slightly into her patented glare. “Tell me.” “Fine. But first let me warn you, the reason you don’t know what you want is because you are afraid of admitting a weakness to yourself. You're not gonna like what I have to say.” “Are you going to wax poetic all night or will you just fucking tell me?” “No, not if you’re going to be an ass about it.” "Tell me." "Make me." The stare between them intensified and the sand that covered much of the floor started to twitch and converge at Gaara’s feet. Mina stood up and white streaks of electricity crackled and popped around her. “Do you think you can win this fight?” Gaara sneered. “I’m not afraid to find out.” Mina lifted her hand but Gaara was faster. The sand from his gourd shot out and covered Mina’s hand at light speed. Mina lifted her other hand and once again sand shot out of the gourd and covered her up to her shoulder this time. “I thought you would put up some kind of a fight, Mina. This is disappointing.” Mina didn’t flinch though, in fact, she smiled. All the static in the room disappeared. Gaara was confused, but not about to give up the fight. When she started speaking her voice was low. “I don’t need to fight you Gaara. Naruto is coming up the stairs as we speak.” Her voice changed to soft and sweet. “When he sees what you’re doing to me, poor little me, weakened from the witch, attacked by two assassins, bound by your sand... he’ll hate you.” Gaara’s mouth dropped open a bit and the sand recalled to his gourd as quickly as it had exited. He had been beaten by someone who didn't even put up a fight. He was mildly impressed. “That’s evil.” “Evil is as evil does, Gaara. For the record, I was bluffing just then. You could have beaten the shit out me and I still wouldn’t have told Naruto what happened. I have my reputation to think about. Truce?" "No." "Fine. We can be enemies if that’s how you like it. It doesn’t change anything anyway. Tomorrow when we leave, I hope you'll come with us." “What? Come with you where?” “To rescue Itachi. We may need you. They’re taking him deep into the desert and you’re obviously the best guide we’re gonna be able to find.” “To rescue him?” Gaara still hadn’t wrapped his mind around that. “We’ll have to rescue him if we’re going to kill him. First things first. Anyway, they’re right outside the door and we have four more assassins arriving any minute. They’ll be coming through the window I think. I can hear thoughts coming from the rooftop across the way.” “You get the door, I’ll get the window.” He said as he strode across the room. “Oh, and Mina?” “Yeah?" "I'd prefer to keep my sexual preferences between you and me. They don't know." He gestured toward the door with his head so she would know exactly who "they" were. "No problem. We all have our secrets." ~~~~TBC and please review!Blisblop: I would love it if you would send me something you wrote! My e-mail addy is tatemshope@gmail.com . That would be so awesome! I love your reviews, and if they ever are negative, that's fine. They help me a lot and I appreciate how knowledgeable you are about all of this stuff. I actually feel like this chapter is kind of slow, but sometimes you have to write a chapter that just sets everything else up, and that was what this chapter was. I do have a question for you though. I've sort of painted myself in a corner and now I'm a little unsure of who has Itachi exactly. I had it all planned out but now I hate what I was going to write. Any suggestions? Kyuubi-kun: So glad you enjoyed the new chapters! I agree that the last chapter definitely had a WAFF to it. Sometimes I can be such a girl! Oh well, there's plenty more action to come! I hope you'll keep reading! S2: I'll give you a little spoiler... Itachi is safe for now. Leasan: I'm so glad you gave it a chance and liked it! That made my day! CandyCandyCandy: You're right; it's Welsh! I actually went to a Welsh summer camp when I was younger and I've always thought it sounded sort of magical. Birubiru: I'm glad you liked it. I think the thing with Mina is that although she is powerful, emotionally she's a wreck so she ends up being the weakest fighter in a lot of situations. Don't worry too much about Sasuke... I'll always keep him safe! While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
