Chapter 15
"I thought nobody would be sent to that maple town anymore?" Sasuke snapped and stormed into the infirmary, where father was discussing something with Deidara and Tsunade. Itachi was there too, for some reason, but Sasuke paid him no mind. "What the fuck were you thinking, sending Naruto there?!"
"Wait, hold on, what are you talking about?" Father demanded confused. "Nobody is going to be sent to that town anymore, we decided that two weeks ago, remember?"
"Need I to remind you all that this is an infirmary and not a meeting room?" Tsunade asked casually, but her eyes were narrowed.
Any other moment and Sasuke would acquiesce to retreat, because an angry Tsunade was not to be taken lightly, but he was too incensed, too worried to pay her words any mind.
"Then why the hell did Naruto leave me a note, saying he's on a run there to check for stuff with Tobi?" Sasuke hissed, slamming the note in question down on the desk.
"Tobi? Doesn't he still shit his pants whenever he just hears a zombie?" Deidara asked perplexed. His bandages looked freshly wrapped again.
"He's still working on his fear for them, yes," Itachi said more diplomatically and frowned, picking up the note. "We didn't send him, Sasuke, you know we wouldn't."
"Well, clearly someone did!" Sasuke said angrily. "Why the fuck else would he leave me a note? He's not going to lie about that shit! I will fucking kill whoever sent him out there, but now I have to go after him."
"You can't go after them, it's too dangerous," Father instantly refuted; his lips thinning when he read the note.
"He went after us and saved all of our arses that time," Sasuke hissed, gesturing at himself and Deidara. "The hell I'm not going after him, he could die out there! He won't have enough weapons on him if he thinks he's just going to check goods!"
"And Tobi is a shit fighter, un," Deidara said soberly. "If they really land into trouble, shit's going to hit the fan pretty fast if Naruto-kun has to protect Tobi."
"I'll go with you," Itachi offered. "We can take one of the cars."
"Even with two, going there is too dangerous," Father said pinched.
"Like hell am I going to stay here while Naruto might - "
"Is this a bar or an infirmary? Goodness, if you talk any louder, the whole compound will hear you just fine." Sasori strode inside, carrying a bag with bottles that rattled slightly when he placed the bag on the desk. "Here's some new disinfectant, doctor."
"Thanks, Sasori," Tsunade murmured.
"I could join," Deidara offered, resuming the conversation as if Sasori's entrance hadn't happened.
"No, you won't," Tsunade instantly rebuffed him and scowled. "For god's sake, you have a death wish after all? You don't have a prosthetic yet, you can't do anything out there with just one hand!"
"We can't just leave Naruto-kun out there on his own, though," Deidara argued.
"What's the deal? What's got you all so fired up?" Sasori asked irritated, his eyebrows drawn together.
"Somebody ordered Naruto-kun to go to that maple town," Itachi said curtly.
"The one that nearly got you and Kisame killed?" Sasori asked thoughtfully and when father nodded, he said, "Wait, Naruto? The new kid?"
"You can hardly call him new still when he's been around for around half a year already, un," Deidara said dryly.
"So why's the new kid going to that town if it's forbidden?" Sasori questioned, ignoring Deidara's comment. That wasn't unusual for the two of them.
"Because some kind of fucktwit sent him there to kill him," Sasuke grounded out through clenched teeth. "I don't bloody care who's joining me, I'm going after him now! I don't know when exactly he left, but the longer we stay here arguing, the further he gets to that town."
"I can go with you," Father suggested, but this time it was surprisingly Sasori who shut down his idea.
"Not a good idea," Sasori said critically. "People know the schedule and they know you're not on the roster to leave the compound for at least the following two weeks. They're going to ask questions if they see you leave and I doubt you want anyone else to know that one of our own got sent to a dangerous place somehow."
"Two actually," Itachi corrected.
"Whatever, two of them," Sasori said bored. "My argument still stands: you can't leave unless you want people to start gossiping and I can assure you, that's the last thing you'll ever want."
Tsunade bit down on her lip. "I could - "
"I'll go," Sasori unexpectedly offered.
Everybody stared at him, making him raise his eyebrow. "What?"
"Why would you join us?" Sasuke asked bemused. "You don't know Naruto."
Frankly, given Sasori's personality, it was probably safe to say that he didn't give a shit about any of them either. He wasn't an arsehole perse, but he didn't exactly go out of his way to bond with other people either. Sasuke was aware that was pure irony coming from him, but Sasori usually just locked himself up in his own house, trying to create medicine out of the meagre supplies they found on their runs.
"I don't, but you need at least a third person and it's been a while since I last went outside the compound," Sasori replied casually.
"That and you can't really work on any new projects until some new goods arrive, un," Deidara commented knowingly.
Sasori waved him off. "Am I really going to get the third degree for offering my help?" he said unimpressed. "Look, you want to go after them or not? I imagine it's not simply a trip of an hour that we have to make."
"Father, we have to leave now," Sasuke pressed. "Naruto's got no idea what's waiting for him there!"
Father clenched his jaw. "Fine, you three go after them, but you take as much ammunition with you as you can," he ordered. "I don't care about the stock, you're not going out there emptyhanded."
"Wasn't really planning on doing that," Sasori muttered.
Sasuke was already on the move; anxiety and fear like a heavy boulder in the pit of his stomach. "Let's go!"
While Itachi and Sasori went to stock up on ammunition, Sasuke made a quick stop at Naruto's apartment. Just as he feared, while Naruto had taken his crossbow and his gun with him, most likely his dagger as well, hopefully his machete, he didn't have nearly enough ammunition with him to properly protect himself in case shit hit the fan.
"Fuck," he muttered, spotting a good amount of bolts still hidden in the duffel bag underneath the bed. He zipped the bag shut again and after a short moment of hesitation he rose up and took the bag with him.
He had no idea what would await them there in that town, but it was most likely safe to assume that Naruto could use more bolts than he had with him now. Unless they managed to catch up to him and Tobi before they reached the town, but Sasuke's gut feeling told him they wouldn't be that lucky.
After Naruto's apartment he went straight to Anko, where Itachi and Sasori were putting bags with weapons in one of the few cars they had left.
"What did Naruto take when he left the compound?" he asked. He doubted it would be one of the vans, but they had to know which vehicle to look out for when they would arrive there.
Anko blinked, a bit taken aback by his brusque tone. "Erm, the bike he took when he came after us."
His lips thinned. Of course that was also the fastest bike they had on their disposal. "How long ago did they leave?"
She cocked her head to the left, pursing her lips. "Man, I didn't really check the clock," she sighed, bracing her hip against the work bench. "Maybe around two, three hours ago? Why the questions?"
"Thanks," he grunted and made a beeline for his brother, who was waiting for him at the car. "They took the fastest bike we have. Anko thinks they left around two or three hours ago."
"That's not good at all," Itachi muttered; his eyebrows pinched.
No, it wasn't, because it meant that unless the bike suddenly gave the ghost, Naruto and Tobi would already have arrived at the town long before they would show up.
"Well, then I propose we leave immediately instead of dawdling here," Sasori remarked and got in the backseat of the car.
"I'll drive," Itachi offered.
They also got in the car, Sasuke in the front passenger seat, and after Itachi signed at one of the guards, the gates opened for them, allowing them to drive out of the compound. The sky was overcast now and Sasuke hoped they wouldn't have to deal with a serious downpour. It could rain on their way back for all he cared, but a downpour now would pose nothing but trouble.
"How straightforward is the road to this village?" Sasori inquired idly after a short while. He'd been studying a map of the region, occasionally glancing outside as if he wanted to compare the map with the reality.
"Pretty straightforward," Itachi replied. "When Kisame and I went there, we didn't encounter any problems until we had arrived at the town. Guess that's why our guards were lowered a bit," he added chagrined.
"What exactly happened?" Sasori asked, folding the map back up. "Deidara only mentioned that you and Kisame nearly managed to get yourselves killed when visiting that town and that's the reason why the town got scrapped from the list."
Sasuke glanced at his brother. After they had returned and told their story to the entire Board, neither Itachi nor Kisame had remarked on it again. That wasn't really surprising. There was no point in dwelling on failed runs and Itachi especially had never been the type to stew in regret. What was there to be won with retelling the story over and over again?
But now it would properly prepare them for whatever was awaiting them in that village. Perhaps most of the zombies had cleared out by now, making the town safer, but Sasuke didn't dare to hope for that. This apocalypse had proven that luck came by very sparsely.
"Not much to tell, really," Itachi said and shrugged; keeping his gaze aimed at the road. "When we got there, nothing seemed really amiss so after a first quick drive through of the place, we parked at the gates and went on foot. We suspect we somehow triggered a trap at one point, because all at once zombies started pouring out of every building."
His shoulders tensed and he tightened his grip on the steering wheel so hard Sasuke was surprised he didn't hear the material protesting. "I've never seen so many undead gathered together," Itachi continued softly; his entire face blank now. "It was as if someone had herded them into those buildings like sheep. That's the only conclusion Kisame and I could reach, because until we triggered something, we hadn't even seen one of them. We fought our way out of the mass, got back into the car and drove away."
Sasuke hid his grimace behind a balled fist, staring out of his own window. He didn't want to think of the kind of person who would shepherd zombies together and collect them into buildings before setting up traps which would deliberately free the undead. He would suspect that guy Orochimaru was pulling that shit if he hadn't seen with his own eyes how the bastard had got ripped apart by zombies.
"Any chance the zombies might have cleared out by now?" Sasori questioned neutrally. He had two guns strapped to his sides and a small bag resting next to him.
Itachi pursed his lips. "I doubt it. The town seemed to have acted as some sort of community at one point; all the walls were enforced and we only found one way out – the same way we entered. With how many zombies were present back then …" he trailed off, shaking his head.
"They might have run each other over and piled together," Sasori concluded. "If they're blocking the gates, I doubt either the new guy or Tobi would be stupid enough to try to enter."
"That is if they're still blocking the gates and whoever had rounded up those zombies in the first place hasn't done it again," Sasuke remarked darkly. He glanced at the red haired man through the rear view mirror, watching him incline his head thoughtfully.
"There's always that possibility," Itachi murmured; his face darkening a smidgen.
After all, with how fast Itachi and Kisame had to clear out last time, they hadn't had the opportunity to check whether anyone was still alive in that town. Common sense and experience with zombie herds said that nobody could still be alive if there were that many zombies present, but someone had to have rounded them up in the first place and had put those traps there. If they had done that the first time, it was safe to assume they might have done it again.
"So what did your guy do that pissed off someone from the Board badly enough that he was sent on a suicide mission?" Sasori questioned casually.
"So certain he pissed someone off," Sasuke murmured, narrowing his eyes slightly.
Sasori raised an eyebrow. "Well, the only ones who know about the town and how dangerous it is, are the Board. The only ones who have the 'authority' to send people on runs are the ones belonging to the Board." His voice grew a condescending pitch when he continued, "So given that your guy was sent out on this run to this very dangerous town even though it had been decided that this place would be off limits, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he pissed off someone badly. Considering the current global state, I'm highly curious as to what your guy did that would have him be sent to his grave basically."
"That guy has a name," Sasuke said irritated. "You know it very well, so stop being such a dick about it."
"Sasuke," Itachi sighed, but the younger man ignored him.
"I didn't ask you to join me, so stop acting like we forced you to come with us," Sasuke went on, looking back to glare at Sasori.
They held each other's stare for a while, until Sasori tilted his head to the left and offered a small nod. "What did Naruto do that pissed off the Board?"
"Why are you so interested in that?" Itachi asked mildly. "You usually don't bother with their decisions."
Sasori clasped his hands together on his lap, tapping out a slow beat with his right thumb across his left one. "I normally don't care," he agreed easily. "But in this case I find it rather interesting that the Board – or someone from the Board – would actually willingly send out someone to their death. If word gets out about this, the entire compound will be in an uproar, no doubt."
Sasuke and Itachi shared a look. Itachi raised an eyebrow and Sasuke pursed his lips, but nodded.
"Around a month ago my run ended badly," Sasuke started in a neutral voice. He could feel Sasori's gaze piercing in the back of his head, but he paid him no mind. "Because we weren't back yet by the time I had promised Naruto we would return, Naruto got a bad feeling and went to the Board to ask them permission to leave."
"He didn't get it," Sasori guessed correctly.
"He didn't. They told him that he was worrying about nothing. He went to Itachi instead, who helped him leave and Naruto found us before …" Sasuke licked his lips, his mouth too dry, "before more of us could die. Some of the Board were less than impressed by the fact that he went against their decision."
"And with some of the Board you mean …" Sasori coaxed.
Itachi took over. "Danzo was the main one who had problems with Naruto-kun riding out to find the group."
Sasuke looked at him, surprised at how easily he'd admitted their suspicion. Because while Sasuke hadn't actively thought about it, he knew that only one person could really be responsible for this bullshit.
Danzo had sent Naruto and Tobi to their possible deaths.
Only Danzo had continued to make a fuss throughout that entire meeting after Naruto and their group had returned. Danzo had been the one insisting on holding the meeting and had been the only one threatening Naruto with exile from the compound. Out of all the Board members he'd been the least satisfied with how easily Naruto had got away with what he'd considered breaking a carnal rule.
He had never liked the old man, but even still a part of him felt betrayed by Danzo now. If Danzo had indeed given Naruto the order to go to that town – and nobody but him could be a suspect – then he had willingly and knowingly sent two of their people to their graves. And because of what? A stupid grudge because Naruto had got away with breaking the rules without suffering any consequence? Because Danzo didn't like people going against him as openly and brutally as Naruto had done?
It made him sick.
It was one thing knowing that a stranger could easily kill and betray you nowadays as they were likely to help you – it was another thing being betrayed by someone belonging to your own group. If you couldn't even trust someone who was supposed to uphold the safety of the group, who could you still trust?
"Hm, doesn't surprise me," Sasori murmured. "Danzo never really struck me as a man who likes to play nice with others."
There was still a difference between not wanting to play nice with others and inadvertently causing someone's death because of an inane grudge.
"What's going to happen to Danzo after this?" Sasori asked curiously.
"That," Itachi's hands slowly relaxed around the steering wheel as they left the main road behind for a smaller sideroad, "is going to depend entirely on what we will find in that town."
They didn't manage to catch up to the bike and by the time they arrived at the desolate looking town, the sky had darkened even further as if it was already preparing itself for the evening in a couple of hours.
The first thing Sasuke noticed when Itachi killed the engine was the deafening silence surrounding them. Wherever he looked, he saw nothing but rotting corpses, their faces mangled brutally as they had fallen underneath whoever had been here before. Some had their skulls blasted apart, others showed stab wounds in the centre of their foreheads or to the side of their heads. Then there were others who still had a bolt buried in their brain.
The sight of those bolts simultaneously filled Sasuke with some relief but also apprehension, because if Naruto had managed to work his way through this herd, why didn't they hear any signs of a fight still ongoing? Had Naruto and Tobi holed up somewhere? Why not simply get back on the bike and leave?
"Be careful for any traps; there might be thin ropes near the ground," Itachi murmured; keeping his voice low.
"Not all the zombies were gathered in the buildings again," Sasori remarked; his eyes bright and clear as he looked around. "If they were, they wouldn't be lying dead on the ground now."
"Does that mean we won't have to worry about the person who gathered them in the first place?" Sasuke asked dubiously.
"I'd say it'd be pretty stupid for us to let our guard down now," Sasori answered. "Because there has to be a reason why Naruto and Tobi aren't around here."
"Let's check the streets first," Itachi suggested. "We'll keep together, do a sweep and then check the buildings afterwards."
Their weapons readied, the three of them slowly moved through the street, taking note of the motionless zombies sprawled across the broken asphalt and busted footpaths. While not numerous exactly, there was no denying that carnage had taken place here. Which only begged the question: why hadn't Naruto and Tobi turned around to escape instead of fighting them all? Naruto had enough experience to know that tackling a giant herd with just two people wasn't a good idea.
He halted abruptly when he realised something, making the other two men stop as well.
"Sasuke?" Itachi furrowed his eyebrows, casting a quick look around them.
"You said that not all the zombies were brought into the buildings again," Sasuke whispered, feeling suddenly too vulnerable even with their backs against what had once been a butcher. "What if they were, though?"
"What do you mean?" Sasori asked, frowning.
Sasuke jerked his head to the gates where their car was still waiting. "All these zombies are dead, which at the very least implies that Naruto and Tobi have killed them. We haven't found the bike yet, though, don't you think that's weird? If these zombies had already been out on the streets, the bike should at the very least be still at the gates," he argued. "But it clearly isn't and we also didn't come across them, so they haven't left yet."
"What are you thinking?" Itachi asked slowly, but it seemed he was also piecing the puzzle together.
"What if Naruto and Tobi were still driving the bike when the zombies were released?" The boulder in Sasuke's stomach grew even bigger and he tightened his grip on his katana. "They would have no choice but to fight them then."
"If they had to fight them off, they wouldn't have the chance to turn around and drive away," Sasori concluded grimly. "If they were surprised by them, that means the zombies weren't yet present when they arrived – which means that whoever rounded them up in the first place - "
"Is still here," Itachi finished quietly.
Fuck. The hairs in the back of his neck rose up and it took all of Sasuke's willpower to not let the paranoia take over and imagine odd looking shadows around every corner. He tried to convince himself that he was just being pessimistic, letting himself be led astray by the sombre atmosphere clinging to the town, amplified by the dead zombies surrounding them, but he knew better. If the zombies had already been present by the time Naruto and Tobi had arrived, the bike would still be at the gates because then they wouldn't have been able to drive through, depending on how big the group had been. Most likely Naruto and Tobi would have immediately turned around and driven right back, because even if Tobi had no experience with zombies, Naruto knew when a situation was a lost cause. He wouldn't knowingly put himself and Tobi in danger.
But the bike wasn't around and neither were the two men. In spite of all the zombies dead on the ground, there were no other sounds of zombies gurgling or fighting going on. The guns used, at least, should be making noise if Naruto and Tobi will still fighting. Were they hidden away somewhere? That would be the best case scenario, but when taken into account that they had most likely been surprised by the appearance of zombies, which implied that at least one other person was present here …
This wasn't good. This had gone from bad to fucked up within five minutes.
"Naruto-kun is an excellent fighter," Itachi tried to reassure him.
"But Tobi isn't," Sasori snorted harshly. "Even I know that. He'd be like dead weight pulling Naruto down in the case of a fight."
"There's no point in worrying about that now when we don't know anything yet," Itachi said firmly. "For all we know, they are holed up somewhere in one of these buildings, maybe waiting out a group."
None of them mentioned what they were all most likely thinking: that they could be in worse shit than just waiting out a group of zombies.
"Let's continue with our search, standing here won't help them," Itachi decided.
Hyper alert now, Sasuke checked every building, every part of the road for any sign that might tell him where Naruto and Tobi might be. He clung onto the knowledge that Naruto was a hardened fighter, had even managed to kill off Sakon's entire group before either one of them had even landed a single hit in return, but with every corner they turned and with each minute spent in oppressive silence, it was becoming more difficult to believe that Naruto and Tobi were completely fine.
If they were fine, shouldn't they have found something by now? Anything that could tell them where they were?
They arrived at what had been the town square at on point in time. Now only husks of cars remained, some rammed into houses, others smashed into each other. A couple of them were still neatly parked, as if they had been merely left behind by their owners with the idea that one day they would come back for them.
More zombies had been killed here. Sasuke was somewhat disturbed to see that most of them had their heads cut off, the skulls mindlessly gnashing still. The tool that had caused their decapitation was an iron chain of all things, lying discarded onto the ground. One end had been tied to a tree, the other one –
"The bike," Sasori said quietly.
They had finally found the bike, almost hidden behind a van which had fallen sideways. Underneath the bike there was someone. Someone who softly moaned at their rapid approach. Someone bloodied, crushed underneath the bike.
Tobi.
"Tobi, where's Naruto?" Sasuke demanded, dropping down to his knees to check him.
It was when he pulled the collar of Tobi's jacket down to check for further injuries that he realised they were too late. His heart sinking, he was vaguely aware of Sasori and Itachi kneeling down on either side of him, quick to examine Tobi as well – and just as quick to realise they had run out of time.
Tobi's throat had been slashed and while both his collar and his hand – now lying limply next to his head – had done their best to stem the bleeding, it wasn't enough. The cut was too deep, the blood loss too severe for Tobi to survive this. Even if Tsunade had been with them, she wouldn't have been able to do anything. At this point it was a miracle Tobi was still clinging onto life.
"H-h … T-to-to-told … r-ru-run," Tobi gurgled amidst the blood dripping down the corners of his mouth, joining the blood spilling out of his throat. His eyes were wide, helpless, terrified, and Sasuke could only hold his hand, let him know through that, that he wasn't alone.
"Naruto-kun told you to run?" Itachi asked urgently, bending down closer to him. "Tobi, can you tell us what happened?"
"Sh-sh-he – he … re-re-rel-rela-release un-un-undead," Tobi muttered; his voice growing weaker and weaker with each rasping exhale. "F-Fought … f-fought o-off … G-go-go-got s-s-s-s-sent b-bu-t …"
A squeeze in Sasuke's hand, so light he only registered it because he was concentrating, and then Tobi's eyes grew blank, his facial features slackening.
He was dead.
Sasuke took a deep breath and placed Tobi's hand on his chest. Dispassionately he watched Sasori retrieve a knife from his bag and swiftly put it in through Tobi's right temple. His gentle lowering of Tobi's head back on the ground was almost uncharacteristic.
"I didn't get much from that," Sasori murmured, staring down at Tobi's glazed over eyes before he reached out and closed them. "But we're either dealing with a man, a woman or both. Seems like they were fighting them off, but …"
Where was Naruto?
The question was basically screaming in Sasuke's head, bouncing back and forth, as he rose up, looking around him; desperation threatening to take over. Naruto would have realised that Tobi had no experience fighting off zombies, let alone other people. He had sent Tobi away, most likely intending for him to return to the compound and get some help while he fought off both zombies and whoever had been here with them. But Tobi hadn't even made it out of the town. Somehow he'd had his throat slashed and had been left for dead. And Naruto wasn't here.
If he had managed to kill whoever was responsible for Tobi's murder, wouldn't he still have been here even if it was just to remain at Tobi's side until he passed away? Naruto wasn't planning on making friends, no, but Sasuke also didn't think he was the type to leave a person to die alone. He knew Naruto would still have been here if he had been able to.
That he wasn't, could only mean …
"Hey." Sasori's voice sounded off. He'd wandered to the east of the square and was looking down at something on the ground. "I think I found something."
Sasuke was closest to Sasori and as he hurriedly approached him, he caught something glinting in front of Sasori.
Something gleaming, catching the faint daylight.
As Sasuke came closer and closer, his heartbeat grew louder and louder, until his ears were ringing and his heart was pounding so madly, it felt like it would go straight through his chest.
"How come you never let anyone see your dagger?" Sasuke asked curiously, watching from his reclined position in the bed how Naruto meticulously cleaned the blade. He was sitting at the foot of the bed, naked with only a blanket covering his lap, and he shouldn't look so enticing after what they had just done and him now cleaning the blade, but he did.
Only five steps separated him from Sasori and the glint. The edges of his sight grew fuzzy.
Naruto looked up, cheeks still flushed, but his eyes glinting amused now. "Man, Suigetsu been complaining to you this time?"
"Nah, Karin told me about it. Not that I care, but I'm just curious, I guess."
"Sasuke, wait!" Itachi's voice was sounding fuzzy too for some reason, as if he was under water.
He felt like he was under water, his moves slow and sluggish as he came to a stop, his eyes being pulled down as if led by gravity itself.
"I don't care much about the other knives, but this one's special." Naruto's smile was soft when he carefully lifted the dagger. "It's the last thing my dad gave to me before he died."
Glinting. Gleaming. Steel. A blade smudged with red.
"Whatever happens, there's no way I'd leave this dagger behind. This and my crossbow – they've kept me alive ever since."
There was a pool of blood, a clinical part of Sasuke noted, but his body was frozen. A large pool of blood, the edge of it seeping into the tips of his shoes.
Right there in the middle of the pool was a dagger.
Naruto's dagger.
