Orochimaru awoke the next morning, he hadn't completed the work he had been told to do but he figured that for once, since he did so much for the village as is, it would not matter. They could give him a few extra days to finish the work. It did not go the way he expected when he received a call from the higher ups of Konoha. The elder on the other end of the phone seemed snappish and abrupt.
-You did not come to this morning’s meeting?!- The elder said into the phone, Orochimaru checked the time to see he had indeed missed it. Not on purpose, time had just slipped past him. He immediately went on to apologize. He hated it when the elders were angry at him; he had a hard time fitting in as it is. He never wanted to give anyone reason to be upset with him, it was only an excuse for them to push him further away from their society.
-I'm so sorry- he didn't get the chance to finish.
-Have you at least completed the papers we gave you? I need them now.- The man ordered, the shinobi looked at the unfinished work.
-I still need to finish a few of them, can I drop them off later- once again the black haired male was cut off mid sentence. The man on the other end seemed angry and hateful as he spoke into the phone.
-What?!- The man yelled, -you haven't even completed the papers? Is this some joke to you? Monsters like yourself should be grateful Konoha even lets you stay here. And yet here you are, ungratefully rejecting our work and leaving it there for someone else to do.-
-No one else has to do it.- Orochimaru said slightly angry now, the words were cutting him. Monster? Is that what people saw? Did they think they were doing him some kind of a favour? Did they honestly believe that he was not one of them to the point that he had to earn his keep twice as much as a regular citizen, because to them, in their hateful eyes, he was not a regular citizen. He was different. He would bet if it were Tsunade or Jiraiya who had not done the work the elders would have let matters go, would have asked if they were coping with their work. But not when it came to the snake summoner. They expected him to simply get on with everything, as if he was not also a human being who needed to do his own things at time. He was merely there to be used by them.
-I need the papers now!- The man said his voice raising in volume.
-I'll get them to you immediately.- Orochimaru said, he regretted saying the words so meekly when the man slammed the phone down. He heard the hollow sound of the phone beeping as the other end switched off. He hung up as well and instantly went to finish the work left on his desk. It took him half an hour as he rushed it before putting it in an envelope and dashing out the door. He headed straight to the Hokages office and knocked twice before humbly entering.
-I have the reports.- He said as he entered, an angry elder stood by Sarutobi. The snake summoner’s teacher seemed awfully busy with something on his desk and hadn't even noticed his student enter. The elder walked over to take the papers. That was the end of their exchange. No thank you, no good job. No nothing. A silent exchange where the elder carelessly dumped the papers onto a stack of others to be ignored for the next few hours.
-Some kind of rush that turned out to be.- the snake summoner irritably thought.
He took his leave since no one bothered to look at him, or even acknowledge his presence. That was the last time he decided, that he would ever help them. He had done it to find acceptance. But he was ignored regardless. He was done desperately reaching out to men who didn't even care about him. They never would, so he was done hoping that one day they'd change their minds. He took off down the road, he didn't know why he was heading to the house he had chosen but he was. He passed his own house, passed many others until he pulled up at a familiar door. He knocked on it hurriedly.
Orochimaru was unsure if what he was doing was right, but he didn’t have much time to think about it. The door slowly opened.
-Hello…- Orochimaru said, staring at the ground.
-It’s good to see you again.- Jiraiya said, stunned. He never used to visit him, could it be something important again?
-Can I come in?- Orochimaru asked.
-What, yeah of course.- he invited him in hurriedly, -Is Sarutobi…
-Don’t talk about Sarutobi. Can’t I come here on my own?- Orochimaru snapped.
“On his own? So he just wants to see me." Jiraiya thought to himself.
-Umm.. Oro, isn’t it the time of that meeting and all?- Jiraiya asked.
-I’ve left.- Orochimaru admitted.
-Great! Did you agree to take a day off?- Jiraiya enthused.
Orochimaru felt bad lying to the person he loved and didn't want to do it, but telling the truth was proving difficult this time around.
-Is everything alright?- the white haired male asked, when his friend failed to look into his eyes he asked again, -Oro?-
-Nothing you bastard.- Orochimaru hissed, he hated what he had said. Why did he have to be so harsh. He hoped he hadn't upset his comrade. Little did he know the white haired male had already worked him out. He knew something was wrong if the man was lying and getting defensive.
-It sounds like something happened, Oro.- Jiraiya said worriedly.
-It's nothing.- Orochimaru lied again. Jiraiya looked at his friend with sympathetic eyes before coming forwards and wrapping his arms around him tightly.
-If you say it's nothing I'll believe you.- Jiraiya said, he didn't expect the other smaller male to reciprocate the hug but the black haired sannin hugged him back, his arms coming around his team mates neck. Then Jiraiya realized that perhaps it wasn't about knowing what was wrong, it was simply about comforting his friend. After all, that's why Orochimaru had stumbled up to his door half a mess; he had been seeking out human affection, someone to merely tell him everything would be fine.
-I'm useless to this village.- Orochimaru finally said softly, Jiraiya looked down at him.
-This village would be a mess without you Oro, what are you talking about?- He said lightly stroking his friends hair.
-I don't have any reason not to work hard for my homeland. What else should I be spending my time on? I have no family, no partner. And since my parents died...- Orochimaru muttered inconsolably, -if I don't work for this village what am I doing here?
-Is that what you think? Or is that what someone is telling you?- Jiraiya asked holding the other tighter again, -because that's utter nonsense.
Orochimaru looked up at him with bright eyes, -I don't think it is. I have nothing.
-You have me. We can sort something out. We can make you a program- or something- anything. Jiraiya started, -just to get your mind off this, to fill up your time.
-Like what?- Orochimaru asked.
-Like- lets go watch a movie. Regular people do that all the time. It's time you got to act like a regular person Oro-cat!- Jiraiya exclaimed. Orochimaru thought it over. He did want to be a regular person, but it felt too soon. He didn't want to be around people, he didn't want to be around anyone, except for the man currently holding him.
-Perhaps we could rather... Stay here?- Orochimaru asked. Jiraiya was shocked, the other wanted to spend time at his house, it was a moment to remember.
-Yeah! Great idea, stay as long as you like!- Jiraiya said, they entered the house and Orochimaru looked around at the messy arrangement.
-When was the last time you swept or dusted?- Orochimaru asked.
-No clue." Jiraiya admitted. The Sannin watched him walk around the mess. He pulled Jiraiya's sleeve.
-Tell you what, you go get stuff for our movie, I'll clean up a bit.- He said already starting to undo the mess that had disturbed him. Jiraiya laughed but agreed before heading out the door. It only took him half an hour to finish up at the shops and he didn't expect the black haired male to have accomplished much. After all his house was in quite a state. He was surprised when he came back to see that his friend had already cleaned the entire house.
-That was quick.- He said as he entered. The other nodded lightly.
-Didn't take long.- He said putting the last of the things into their place. Jiraiya moved to set up the living area where he and his friend would watch their movie. He had bought food and drinks and he placed them on the now clean side table. Jiraiya had made sure to close the curtains and turn the lights on to dim so that the setting was just right for what they wanted to do. Orochimaru sat to the couch.
-What movie should we watch? – asked Jiraiya as he sat beside his friend.
-Umm... I don’t know. The last time I’ve watched one was when Sarutobi took us to the cinema.
-But we were kids that time!- Jiraiya chuckled.
-Exactly...
-Ook. I’ve got this action movie I was planning to watch. A friend recommended this.
-Let’s give it a try, then.
The movie progressed and they spoke in between it. Jiraiya would point out all the attractive characters, while Orochimaru would point out all the errors.
"That's impossible." Orochimaru would say, "Science doesn't work that way."
Jiraiya had no idea, he knew nothing about science, but his friend was fully clued up and noticed any error in the film. He wouldn't let the makers get away with it the white haired man laughed. The movie was close to ending when Jiraiya felt his teammates head resting on his shoulder lightly. He glanced down to find the male was sound asleep, his eyes closed and his breathing calm. Jiraiya pulled a blanket over his lover’s slim form as he gently played with his black hair which hung down around his sleeping body and folded his other arm around his waist.
That was the way the slept for the rest of the night.
