Kiba would never admit it out loud, but he was having the time of his life. Ever since the visiting Kage had come to Hidden Leaf, he had been paying close attention to him. At first he was unnerved, why was HE paying attention to him? Shouldn't he be hanging around the Hokage since Naruto was gone? But then he liked it, especially after what he had seen the afternoon Naruto had left.
He had come to visit the Uzumaki clan grounds but found no one inside. However his nose, ears and Akamaru had told him they were outside. He followed the scents and sounds of metal striking metal to the joined training grounds to a sight.
All of rookie nine (except Naruto and Sasuke of course) PLUS their sensei's were standing at the edge, watching something in awe.
Kiba was about to speak, to demand to know what was going on when he saw what they were looking at.
Inside the ring of trees and observing ninja was the very Kage he was thinking of......fighting Kumara. They seemed to be sword fighting, not just that but going all-out on each other, and Kiba-like the others-was awed by the skill, precision and timing of it all. It was almost like a ballet, as if the two had trained together more than once and knew each others moves, they weaved and ducked and slashed in perfect sync.
Kiba's hand twitched towards the sword he had always worn since receiving it from Kumara. He had the overwhelming urge to take it up and use it, to join them in their fight.
Desires, images, urges all flashed through him, to defend the kitsune against the Kage, to defend the Kage from the kitsune, confusing him. To use the blade in a way he had never before. In the Academy they were taught to use blades, mostly kunai and shurinken, but he had never been drawn to a sword before, preferring the weapons that he was born with.
However now it felt like the weapon called to him, seeking to be drawn, demanding to be used. He wanted to draw it, he HAD to.....He barely heard Akamaru whine in concern, his hand twitched again. He wanted to assure his best friend and companion he was fine, but he couldn't. He had to......

"Kiba?" Hinata peered into her teammates face closely, as if trying to find him in that vacant stare, concerned. She-like that others-had been watching her mate spar with his adopted father's mate, awed by their swordsmanship and hadn't noticed his arrival.
She had only became aware of the events behind them when she heard a soft concerned animal whine followed the high, authoritative bark of Maru. That one sharp bark seemed to say 'pay attention around you!' and ceased everyone's attention, instinctively speaking to them.
What they found was Kiba watching the two from the edge of the clearing, frozen on his spot, Akamaru seated at his feet and looking up at him in concern. As they watched his right hand twitched violently towards the sword on his hip, as if compelled to touch it, but that was the ONLY movement he made, he wasn't even blinking.
When her call had not gained an reaction, Hinata had approached him until she was right in his face. She said his name again, making sure she was in his line of sight.
Suddenly the Inuzuka heir blinked and seemed to come out of it, relaxing to nearly snap "what!" before looking around at everyone else "what are you all looking at?!"
The group blinked, but both the swordsmen exchanged looks. There was no mistaking it, they had both seen what happened and more than that, they had both seen the look in his eyes just before Hinata had snapped him out of it.
The Inuzuka heirs eyes had gone gold, an rich, beautiful dark gold that bordered on amber.
Hinata blinked at him and turned to look at the two of them, an apology in her eyes. She KNEW-or at least suspected-what had just happened and was sorry she had interrupted it.
"It is alright" Kumara assured her softly in her mind "we do not know what might have just happened if you had not have 'woken' him up. He might have been stuck, buried inside......whatever it was. Better to bring him out of it now. Perhaps we should see Tsunade-san about possible side-effects the returning memories might have on him."
Hinata nodded and looked back at her teammate just in time to see him stride forward purposefully towards the two watching males "teach me."
"Wha...." Kumara frowned.
"Teach ME to fight like that. I want to be able to use the sword you gave me but no one else who knows how wants to show me. Teach me."
Kumara opened his mouth but whatever he was going to say was interrupted by the soft voice beside him "I will."
"What?" he looked at the human reincarnation of his adopted fathers mate in surprise. "It makes sense I do it. I am currently living on his clan grounds and have no need to travel as you do. You have your new clan to worry about, I do not. It would be more convenient for myself."
His eyes narrowed as he looked at the Inuzuka "but be warned, I am an harsh task-master. There will be no complaints or slacking off or the training will stop. I WILL NOT accept only half an effort."
"No worries there" Kiba said firmly, stubbornly "I'll outlast YOU."
"We shall see" the man turned and walked away. Kiba called out, almost panicked "where are you going?!"
"To meditate" came the reply "we begin at dawn tomorrow, be ready then." And he was gone into the dark of the trees.
But before he had fully left the field Kumara sensed his hidden emotions. Excitement, joy and a little dread. This was his chance to become close to his mate, to win a place in his life and heart and so many things could go wrong....
************************************************
Kba couldn't keep the cocky grin from his face as Akamaru maneuvered the other into his trap, only to grunt in disappointment as the other seemed to know and jump away in time.
The man's movements flowed together smoothly and seamlessly, even when he was suddenly changing his movement to another. He seemed enormously strong, only controlled in such a way it never became a problem or interfered in their spars. He was intelligent and could tactically out-think Kiba in their training easily, forcing Kiba to often change his own plans or actions in the middle of actually performing them.
He respected Kiba enough to not hold back (except his strength) and the Inuzuka appreciated that, never before had he felt as if he was learning so much, gaining something he could use, even in training with his own team. Here he was learning from not only another like his clan, but someone so incredibly skilled.
Every night when they stopped, allowing them to eat and sleep, despite how exhausted he was and his muscles and limbs hurt, he went to bed knowing he and Akamaru were becoming better fighters, their skills and speed were improving and it made him proud.
And it was all thanks to the other, the Kage, his feelings towards the other slowly increasing. Why not, he was training him for no other reason than he had asked.
He had found himself during their training craving the mans soft even voice, whether chiding him for impatience or commenting on any improvement he made, each one told him where he was in the training. The 'bad' comments told him where he needed to concentrate while the 'good' made him proud of himself, wanting to add on to those, to get more and more of them, to impress his new 'sensei'.
He had never cared before if he impressed anyone before, even his mom or Kunerai-chan, Hinata was just showing off, but for some reason it was important he show THIS GUY how skilled he was, how good in a fight or battle he could be. He didn't understand it really, this feeling, why should he care how some foreign Kage saw him? But his instincts told him it was very important he show the other how strong and skilled he could be. He had never ignored his instincts before, and he wasn't about to start now.
Unknown to Kiba even though the memories of his previous lives were buried, his soul and heart recognized his mate and was acting accordingly. Even though he was his clan's heir and SUPPOSED to be alpha, that was more he was the only male child of the clan head, so expected to take over. So he based everything he did on this, he was acting as he was expected to.
Even in his first life he hadn't been alpha, but forced to become one due to circumstances and the fact his natural born alpha rejected him. With that lack of an alpha to protect and direct him, he had been forced to become his own. By the time he had come into the picture, he had been old enough to be set in his ways.
The clashes between the two had been an natural alpha vs and alpha by environment, so had clashed so fiercely because the natural alpha was trying to get the other to do what was he was supposed to do and submit. Only the others instincts had become unhinged by the years of neglect and fighting his true nature. Their breed were touchers, needing contact with each other frequently to comfort, affection or just to acknowledge family, and so much time without what he needed, even flat-out denied, had taken its tole on the lives soul, his dark side increasing with every denial.
However NOW, in this life, the alpha was more than willing to give him everything he wanted, he had only to ask.
Kiba's instincts were telling him to show his mate how strong he was, how skilled, that he would be an acceptable mate, that he was strong and skilled and capable of standing by his side and even back to back if necessary.
He didn't even know he was doing so, in his mind he wanted to impress his new 'sensei' because if he learned the basics, the other would teach him more, even better moves, more skilled ones, like he had seen when he was sparing with Kumara. This was the guy who killed not only the Akatsuki but the guy controlling the leader before they could move, even defend themselves, what could HE become and do with such skill?
But the other KNEW what he was doing, that his naturally beta was trying to please him-however instinctively-to show he was a strong skilled mate who would and could protect himself and any pups they had. It was instinctive, an beta dog to an alpha, but it gave him some measure of hope for their future.
One night as he was readying for bed, his companion spoke out on the subject "he seeks to please you."
"Yes, he does."
"Take him from here, mate with him. It is your right."
"He sees me as a teacher, nothing more. He seeks to please me as one."
"Take him home with you, restore your clan as you once did with him."
"He does not remember me, he would hate me for taking him from his family and friends."
The dog barked sharply "YOU are his family, he does not need friends!!!!"
The man sighed "you do not understand. You did not then, and you do not now. I deprived him of family THEN because of my pride and ego. When we eventually came together it was too late to fix the past. We may have moved on together, but the damage was done, his soul set into something .....wild, damaged. I tried to fix it in our lifetime together, but though I know how he felt for me in the end, there was always that part of him reserved from me. If I had of took him from his family that day years ago when I found him, I would have been committing an grievous act, both against him by depriving him of the loving family I took him from in the past, and myself for the act. It would have tainted our entire relationship."
"Instead he grows up completely ignorant!!!"
"I would prefer him ignorant and win him back to me, then have forced him to have experienced some shade of what he had once been though. Here he has a purpose, here he is surrounded by family and friends, here he had teachers to train him to fight, to defend himself properly-and others."
"Yes, they teach him to kill others for money, to take lives of the innocent and guilty alike, to kill others before they can defend themselves or know he's there, this is NOT the childhood you had wanted him to have. He should have been running around, play-wrestling with other pups, rolling in the dirt for the sheer enjoyment of it, NOT learning to slit a throat!"
"It does not matter, he had family here, I could not take him from them without both his hate and causing them to hunt down those responsible. If they found out where he was, where our land was, it would cause rise of an new war, and that is something both I-and my people-could not afford right now."
"OR you could have organized and political marriage between you two to the benefit of both your people, as you are attempting RIGHT NOW."
The reincarnated Youki just looked at his companion, his....other half, his youki or animal side. This too was also part of the 'curse' of his life, he would always be born human-until he was able to restore his mates true being-but so would his animal side, his other half. Once his mate was restored to his true life and memories, THEY would be reunited into one being, one soul. Of course his animal side wouldn't understand.
Unknown to the two, SOMEONE had overheard their conversion and frowned thoughtfully.
Kiba may act like an 'dumb dog' or even just someone who acted before he thought, but he was actually pretty smart. He just acted much the idiot because on one hand everyone expected it of him-being an animal oriented ninja-and on the other hand it was easier not to think.
He KNEW something was going on about and around this man. He heard his clan talking about it and had once heard his mother talking to Hana about it. They said this man was the last of the original Inuzuka, long before they joined Hidden Leaf, that he knew things their clan long forgot and could do things they no longer could. His mother told Hanna that he was his mate, that he had came to claim him. He was NO ONE'S property, he would make him work for it-teaching him to fight was one good way.
Part of him remembered this man's existence, not really memory in any definitive way, but maybe instinctive or the part of him that was born generation after generation, waiting for its mate to come and return and claim him, but either way he KNEW to not make it easy for him.
Maybe it was petty, but it felt right that he should be forced to win his affection or even heart, after all, this was supposedly the one he was going to mate and spend the rest of his life with.
As an dog-oriented ninja it felt right, the alpha had to win over the beta as his mate. Youki always had to give their mate a gift, the more extravagant the better, even the lowest youki did it-which was why they sometimes ended up killing humans.
Youki were nature-based animals, they lived IN nature, but with humans destroying it in the name of progress and killing normal animals for game and food, eating all the fruit and vegetables-bringing a big juicy buck or such back to their lair wasn't always possible. So what was the only plentiful food in the area......?
Which lead to hunters and the ilk.
If he was REALLY this guys mate, Kiba KNEW who he was. He remembered what Kumara had told him that night and after hearing about 'the curse' had put two and two together, only the most stupid person wouldn't have figured it out. He may not remember any of it or what had truly happened the day he got Akamaru, but his companion had told him everything he knew that night the man had come to the village, from his earliest memory of romping around in the trees just outside Kohona, to when Kiba had taken him home and the 'conversation' with his mother.
How that night in bed Kiba had curled protectively around the little puppy and had become so possessive and protective, yelling or even fighting anyone who tried to go anywhere near him, even his mother or sister.
How the next day he had taken him to the Uchiha compound to visit his best friend and her sister to meet them and show him off to her, how he had sensed her strong will-her alpha quality-and commented to him how she would DEFINITELY be strong and capable enough to become and clan head. Her sister, however, was too weak. She was withdrawn and too fragile of heart, he would be shocked if she could even become a ninja.
That was when Kiba confined in him he was going to become the best of ALL the Inuzuka ninja's ever and no one, even Mikomi, would beat him.
Akamaru had resolved to help him win his childhood dream.
"That is why you're are always pushing me" Kiba said, Akamaru nodding solemnly as only a dog can "but why do YOU remember the twins, but no one else? And why didn't you tell me?"
Akamaru answered he HAD in the coming days after the jutsu, but Kiba's denial of her existence and any knowledge of her had confused him, so he stopped asking or talking about it.
"I don't remember that" Kiba had said thoughtfully.
Akamaru had suggested the jutsu was aimed for humans only, either the clan head hadn't even considered them, or it worked on humans ONLY.
"It mustn't work on animals" Kiba said "because you would have to consider that there are summons as well, I mean the Uchiha themselves have cats and crows....." he looked thoughtful again "I don't remember them so I can't say if either had signed their clan contracts yet...."
The white dog answered that Mikomi had signed the cat contract, he remembered how she used to nearly ALWAYS hung around with one in particular, Yuu, the only white cat from the group. After her sacrifice and Yuki's transformation he had never seen her again. In fact he had seen the crows regularly, but not the cats. He suggested the cats had revoked the Uchiha's right to them because of their act, especially Yuu since the cat had been so important.
"What do you mean?"
Yuu had been the 'kitten' of the cat summons boss. It would be no problem for her to convince her sire of the act of evil the clan had done-killing her summoner-and revoking the contract in retaliation. So while the clan continued to CLAIM the cats as theirs.....
Kiba frowned. He had no summons himself-with Akamaru he had no need for one-so he knew nothing of them "but can they really do that? Revoke a contract with a clan they have been part of for generations?"
Akamaru answered with if the Boss summons had to approve of the one to sign a contract, why couldn't he-or she-'un-approve'. This never occurred to Kiba, in fact Kiba thought it hadn't occurred to ANYONE, least of all many summons themselves.
Why couldn't they?
For at least a week they continued on their new routine. It became normal for them, wake in the early morning, breakfast, feeding the dogs and cleaning their kennels, training with his mother, lunch, training with the other, dinner then shower and bed.
However everything changed one day when they were training together in the morning instead. Halfway through their spar there was an commotion from the gates. The next thing Kiba knew an disheveled Kumara was heading right for them, eyes wide in panic and even a little fear. He froze and so did his fighting partner, the older man slowly turning towards the other, eyes and body impassive except for the concern almost hidden in his eyes. Kumara came right up to the other and spoke in a rush "we need to leave NOW.”
“Why?” the question was impassive.
Kumara glanced at Kiba “Naruto found something, something from our past, something IMPORTANT.” He glanced at Kiba again “the spider’s lair.”
Something flickered in the others eyes “I will get my pack.” But before he could move Kiba had spoke “I’m coming too.”
Two sets of eyes looked at him.
Firmly Kiba spoke as he looked at the other “I KNOW who you are, who you are supposed to be to me. I heard mother and the others talking, you are my mate and you are NOT leaving without me.” Kumara frowned at him “and you just accept that he’s supposed to be your mate without protest?”
Kiba’s expression was severe, but he didn’t answer, turning on his heal and with Akamaru in tow moved to the clan home “I’ll meet you guys at the east gate in ten minutes” and was gone.
