Thoughts are in bold and flashbacks are in italics.~~~~Gaara surveyed his three guests as they all sat close to the bed watching the girl. He still hadn’t been able to ask why all three of them were dressed as witches, but he got the distinct impression that the girl actually was a witch. That didn’t make sense though if she was Sasuke’s sister. In any intelligence he’d ever received he’d never heard of the Uchiha clan being involved in witchcraft. "Because I loved you." The dark haired girl whispered it quietly right before her eyes flew open."Sasuke is in trouble."
"Did you read something from him?" Neji took a step nearer to the girl and placed his hand on her shoulder. Gaara noticed she didn’t look much like Sasuke at all now that he could see her in better light. She just looked like a scared little girl. He couldn't picture the proud Uchiha ice prince crying in bed."No, it was Itachi.""I'm going to kill that sick son of a bitch! If that bastard harms one hair on his head
I will..." Naruto's eyes were beginning to narrow and the blue was draining out of them. Gaara noticed this with a bit of unease. Although he and Naruto had grown closer each time they met, and he considered him to be the closest thing he’d ever had to a friend, he still didn’t like the thought of Kyubbi being unleashed in his apartment.
"You don't understand." Mina interrupted. "Itachi is leading him toward us. He's trying to save him."
"How do you know that?" Gaara demanded. He was getting tired of being confused.
"We spoke."
"When?" Gaara demanded again. This was his apartment; damn it, and he shouldn’t have to feel like he had no idea what was going on in his own home.
"Just now." Mina sighed. “I don't feel like explaining this to you…you who so obviously don’t like my brother anyway. Don’t think I’ve forgotten you were trying to harm Sasuke after all... at least you were earlier when you thought I was him!”
Gaara looked at Naruto. Wasn’t he going to defend him against this girl’s accusations? Instead both Naruto and Neji ignored Mina’s comments and continued to question her.
"Do you know where Itachi is bringing him?" Neji asked.
"They're running. That's about all I can tell. I've never been able to communicate with him like this before so I'm not exactly sure what's going on. What I do know is that someone is after Itachi and if they catch him, he seems to be convinced they'll kill Sasuke as well."
Naruto and Neji were pulling on their boots and digging weapons out of
their backpacks before she could even finish her sentence.
"You're sure Itachi is trying to save him?" Naruto didn't sound convinced.
"He loves him..."
This time both Naruto and Neji stopped what they were doing to stare at her.
"I read him. Trust me, as twisted as it is, as twisted as he is... he loves Sasuke... He's protecting him. I know it."
"Can you tell us anything about where they are?" Naruto's eyes were pleading and Gaara felt sorry for his friend. Mina shook her head.
"I'm sorry, I can't tell."
"Can't you just ask him?" The desperation is Naruto's voice was so evident that both Mina and Neji reached out to him. He pulled his arms closer around himself and sat down on the edge of the bed. Apparently, if he couldn't be comforted by Sasuke he would take no comfort.
"It doesn't work like that. He would have to be unconscious for me to be able to speak to him again. Maybe if he was sleeping I would have a chance, but with him running it's almost impossible. I'm trying, but everything I get is vague."
"Couldn't the witch speak to nature? To moths or something? Could she find them even if you can't?" Neji asked quietly.
"You've got to be kidding me." Gaara muttered as Naruto finished fastening on the last of his weapons under his vest. This whole thing kept getting more strange, and for Gaara to think something was strange, it had to be strange.
"How did you know that?" Mina asked, curiosity crossing her features.
"There was a book in Sasuke's room at the castle. It was hand written
and it had all kinds of things about curses, and witches and spells.
I think the witch inside you might have written it and she mentioned
about the moths several times."
Gaara looked from Mina to Neji and then back to Mina again.
"The witch inside you?" Gaara asked but no one paid any attention to him. ’It’s like I’m invisible.’
"Is it true? Can you talk to moths? Kyubbi can speak with animals, although only animals within my sight.”
Mina nodded.
"It's true that she could do it. I'm not nearly powerful enough on my own though. Did
it say in the book how it worked?
"Even if it did, I wouldn't have understood what she was writing
about. Most of the spells and incantations were in that witch
language you were speaking."
"We need to get going. This is taking too long!" Naruto was pacing
around the room and Gaara wondered to himself if he was going to wear a hole in the carpet.
"It's not going to do us any good to just run around with no idea
where we're going, Naruto. Mina, is there anything you can do?"
"I could give myself over to her. If I can use her powers and not
lose myself I can guide what she does."
"Are you sure you can control her?" Even though Neji had been the one
to suggest it, he didn’t look like he was sure it was such a good idea.
"I don't know. You have to promise me you'll bring Sasuke back. I
don't care if this kills me, just promise me he'll be safe."
"You have a witch who lives inside you??" Gaara spoke louder this time. He couldn’t take it anymore! Finally the blonde took notice.
"She's like us, Gaara." Naruto said gently. His eyes were blue again,
and Gaara was thankful for that. He did not want to deal with
Kyubbi and the witch at the same time. Add in his own demon and they
made a terrifying set.
"Let's get this over with. Tie me to the chair."
"What?"
"If the witch takes over, I don't want her running around in the
streets. She'll kill someone... very possibly you. As soon as I tell
you where they are, please go. I doubt I'll be up for a run afterwards, so you're going to have to do it without me."
"Gaara, will you stay and watch her?"
Gaara was shaken out of his thoughts and he wanted to say no, but seeing the depth of the blue eyes that were begging for his help, he nodded. When Mina was tied securely she closed her eyes and bowed her head.
~~~~
Sasuke ran until his aching limbs insisted he take a rest.
While he was running he could ignore all the thoughts he didn't want
to think, but sitting on the cool sand looking at the stars, he
couldn't stop his mind from replaying memories he'd long ago tried to forget. Pushing them quickly back, he tried to think about what Itachi had said as they were parting.
'I don't even know where I'm supposed to be going, but Naruto's
going to be waiting for me there. Yeah, right. I'm so fucking
stupid. Itachi must have had some ulterior motive for wanting to
ditch me. What's wrong with me? Why do I keep falling for this shit.'
~~~~
Naruto watched as his friend lifted her face toward the light and her eyes faded into the familiar violet and then into a deep shade of purple. The air in the room crackled with electricity and a visible purple swirl of chakra wrapped around her like a slow tornado. When she spoke her voice had changed.
"Gwyfyn o dan lleuad. Canfod am i."
She closed her eyes once more.
"There are no trees. He's not on the road. There are no landmarks. I don’t see him. They says he’s here but I don’t see him…” Several minutes passed before she gasped. “He’s on the ground. He’s not dead, he’s not moving though. This isn't helping!" The witch's voice blended into Mina's voice as her frustration came pouring out.
"The stars… look at the stars. Do you know how to pick out the North
Star?" Neji spoke and Naruto found hope in his friend’s ability to find answers in any situation.
"Yes, let me see.... OK, I see it. Now what?"
"Can you see Venus and Mars?"
"Yeah."
"If you were looking at a clock and the North Star was at 12 o'clock,
where would Venus be?"
"2 o'clock"
"and Mars?"
"7 o'clock"
Mina's eyes rolled back and her face fell. The electricity and the purple haze were gone. All three boys ran over to the window. The lights of the village were
bright enough to block out many of the stars, but luckily all three of
the objects their eyes were seeking were visible to the naked eye.
"Now, we just need to run in the opposite direction. We need to make
12 a 6, 2 a 10, and 7 a 5."
"I don't know what that means, Neji, but you're a genius! Let's get
moving! If he’s hurt we’re gonna need to move fast." Naruto paused and glanced tenderly at his friend still tied up in the chair. "Mina, you ok?"
"Yeah..." Her voice was weak and Naruto felt a pang of guilt at
leaving her. Mina would be safe here with Gaara... he hoped. Actually, he wasn't sure which of them he was more afraid for.
"You'll take good care of her, right? Oh, and Mina, don’t put him to sleep. Bad things could happen."

Sasuke continued to mentally curse himself feeling like he'd much rather just melt into the sand than stand up and face the world again. This week had changed him. He'd seen his brother in a different light, and although it still wasn't a good light, repressed memories of his childhood kept surfacing. Sasuke would never admit it out loud, but under all his desire to see Naruto again and his desire to avenge his clan, there was a desperate need for acknowledgment from his brother. Acknowledgment and maybe even love... That's what he really wanted. He knew it was sick. Ever since that day when Itachi had shoved him to the side and let him know it was Naruto he was after, he'd never been able to get rid of a dull ache in his heart. 'I'm so fucking sick.'
~~~~Gaara was staring at her and she was staring at Gaara. She had known from the minute she met him that he had a powerful demon inside of him, but he wasn’t acting like someone who had the confidence that that usually brings. She read him and was surprised at what he felt. He was incredibly nervous, but not because of her witch, because she was a girl. Apparently he'd never been alone with a girl before, at least not a girl that wasn't sneaking into his room in the middle of the night to assassinate him. She stilled her mind so she could read his thoughts.
‘What the hell did Naruto mean when he told her not to put me to sleep? Can she do that? Who is this girl?'
"Should I be worried about untying you?" he finally spoke. His gaze wasn’t unfriendly, although it was certainly intense.
”You don’t strike me as the kind of guy who worries about too much. You don’t think your demon can keep up with me?””If you’re anything like Itachi I doubt you would think twice about killing me if I let my guard down.” Mina was a little shocked by his honestly. He was obviously not used to being around people. “You couldn’t be more wrong. I am nothing like Itachi. I don’t want to talk about him though. I want to talk about you. Tell me about your seal.””No.””I have one too. If you tell me, I may give you what you want most in the world.””Don’t flatter yourself, I’m not into girls.”Mina choked down a laugh in spite of the bleakness of the night.”I wasn’t offering you sex, Gaara. I told you I would give you what you want most. You don’t know what that is?”
”And you do?””I’m a mind reader… or didn’t you catch that?”Gaara looked horrified. His night had just taken a turn for the worse.~~~~"If you're going to cry, I'm going to give you something to cry about!" His father smacked him hard across the face, still gripping the term results in his hand. Sasuke fell to the ground. He had known his father would be angry when he found out he wasn’t first in his class. He hadn’t guessed he would be this angry though. He’d hit him ten or eleven times already and his whole body felt bruised. Somewhere in his mind he knew that grownups weren’t supposed to hurt kids like this, but this was his father, so what would anyone do?
Here in the backyard he could make a dash for it, but he knew his father would catch him and then this beating would get much worse. He shifted back on his hands and tried to make himself into as small of a ball as possible. If only he could stop crying. His father pulled him up by his hair and hit him again, knocking him back to the ground. This time Sasuke fell onto the garden path and he could feel the sharp gravel cutting into his hands. "You're pathetic! Why can't you be more like your brother?" With the word brother his father stepped on his foot driving the rocks deeper into his hands. It felt like glass and Sasuke bit his lip to keep from crying out. Finally his father took his boot off of Sasuke's throbbing hand and took a step back. "Go clean yourself up and then help your mother with dinner. We're pulling you out of the academy tomorrow. I'm not going to let you embarrass this family by being second in your class." Sasuke ran as fast as he could, in through the door passing his brother on the porch, up the stairs and to the bathroom down the hall. As he ran cold water over his hand he started trying to pick out as much gravel as he could. Before long the sink was full of blood and he hadn't made much progress. His shaky hands were making the job difficult and every time he thought about his father's words he felt like he was going to be sick. He flinched and practically fell over the toilet when the door swung open. Thankfully it wasn't his dad, but Itachi. "A...ni...ki..." Sasuke couldn't say anything else. He was sobbing now. Itachi had been on the porch. He must have seen everything. Shame washed over him. "Hold out your hand." Sasuke did as he was told and Itachi pulled a pair of tweezers out of the cabinet. Quickly and almost painfully he removed the remaining stones. When he was finished he washed Sasuke's hand again and then got out the Hydrogen Peroxide and rinsed it off again. Sasuke was calming down and his breathing was returning to normal. For the first time he noticed that his brother refused to actually look at him. He was only looking at his hand. "Why won't you look at me?" He wasn't sure why it bothered him, but it did. "..." Itachi said nothing. Sasuke wasn't entirely surprised. He'd been quiet lately. He was always running off and he'd heard Itachi and his mother having a loud argument in the kitchen the day before. It had been about sneaking off to see some girl in the woods. "Do you hate me like Dad hates me?" As the question left his lips, Itachi's eyes flashed and Sasuke was scared to see how angry his words had made his brother. Apparently he really hated him a lot. Itachi grabbed him tightly around the wrists and pulled him up so they were eye to eye. "I am nothing like him. As a matter of fact, I'm going to take care of this right now." With that he stood up and left the bathroom. Sasuke ran to his bedroom and shut the door. He was too scared to move from his bed until his mother called up the stairs and insisted he come eat. His father was absent from dinner and Sasuke noticed that Itachi's lip was split open. Other than that, he seemed to be in better spirits than he had been in in months. When their mother had gotten up to go into the kitchen to fetch dessert Itachi caught his little brother's eye. "I took care of it Sasuke. He won't hurt you again." Sasuke was awed. Had his brother fought his father? Had he won? There were many questions he wanted to ask but he knew he wouldn’t get any answers. It didn’t matter though. His brother loved him. He knew it. You have to love someone a lot if you’re willing to sacrifice yourself to save them.~~~~
As he felt a tear start to form in the corner of his left eye he shook his head. He had been crying entirely too much lately. It was pathetic. This was not who he was and not who he was going to be. He wiped his eye with a grubby fist and then punched himself in the thigh as hard as he could. ’If you’re going to cry I’m going to give you something to cry about.’
~~~~“We’ve got to be getting close.” Naruto shouted and Neji nodded his head to confirm he had heard his friend.
Using Byakugan Neji was confident they would have no trouble finding Sasuke as long as they were heading in the correct direction. They continued to run for another half an hour when Neji came to a grinding halt.
“Sasuke!”

BlehSgirl: I’m glad you liked it! When Itachi said that, it was supposed to be a little confusing about which one he was talking to. I think Itachi saying that he loves anyone is a little confusing actually!
BlisBlop: No worries. I can’t please everyone all the time. I’m glad you’ll keep reading though! Hopefully you won’t end up hating my story!
