----------Two Weeks Later----------
Naruto felt like he was going insane. He had spent the night before laying in bed staring at the ceiling, almost hoping that Sasuke would come. Almost. The first week after he'd last seen Sasuke had been wonderful. He was staying away like Naruto wanted him to. But then this past week Sasuke still didn't come... and Naruto began to feel the smallest bit of worry. No matter where he went any time of the day Kyuubi never gave the warning growl that meant Sasuke was somewhere close-by. And he'd overheard some of his friends mentioning that they hadn't seen the Uchiha for a long while either. Had he left again? It seemed he had... And that was a good thing. ...Right? Feeling even more confused than he had when Sasuke had first shown up (he hadn't thought he could get any more confused!) he found himself at Sakura's door. Deciding he really wanted to talk to someone, he knocked hesitantly.
There were a few minuets of quiet, then the softest tred over hard wood floor. The door finally opened to reveal Sakura in a comfortable looking pair of the shorts she wore beneath her dress and a relatively plain t-shirt. “Naruto?” she inquired and stepped aside to let him pass.
“Anou sa... Are you busy, Sakura-chan?” he asked quietly, not realizing he looked almost as lost as he felt. “I mean, if you're busy I can go...”
“I was reading a book, Naruto. I'm not busy at all. Come on in,” she smiled a little as she spoke encouraging him in and silently encouraged him to relax a little. He looked ready to have a breakdown or something. Sakura was worried all over again. And she had thought she was done with that when Naruto's cheer had picked up a little bit at the beginning of the month.
“Thanks...” He gave her a tiny smile and walked in, looking around hesitantly to see if anyone else was home. He didn't want anyone to hear their conversation. It was going to be hard enough to talk to Sakura as it was!
“It's not a problem... My parents are gone for the evening, but if you'd feel better upstairs I don't mind.” Sakura hadn't missed his nervous survey of the room. “Wherever you're most comfortable, Naruto...” She had been wondering how long it would take her teammate to breakdown and come to her or their Jounin master. She felt a little honored that Naruto had chosen to come to her, but she pushed such selfish thoughts aside and waited for Naruto to make a decision.
“I think upstairs would be better...” Naruto said quietly, fidgeting a bit.
Sakura nodded and closed the front door. Then she beckoned him to follow her down the hallway and up the stairs. Her room was small, but comfortable with a window seat-balcony, a bed, a vanity, a closet and a sewing dummy which held a fancy, short, white coat licked with red and orange flames and emblazoned with the kanji "fighting spirit" on it. Sakura took the window seat and waited for Naruto to make himself comfortable. “What is it, Naruto?” she asked gently.
He settled on her bed with his elbows on his knees, thinking of where to begin. After a moment he opened his mouth to speak, but shut it again almost immediately. He knew that he would have to tell her what had been happening during Sasuke's visits, but he wasn't sure anymore whether she was still part of the "Sasuke Stalkers". And if she still had a crush on him then he might hurt her... and he didn't want to do that. The minutes ticked by as he fished for words.
“Naruto. Stop,” she said softly after nearly thirty minutes had gone by with nothing said. “Listen to me. You can tell me anything you want to, and it will neither leave this room or upset me. What upsets me is you being this upset and over something you think you can't talk to me about.... So, enough with looking like a carp out of water and tell me what's on your mind,” she demanded. Enough was enough and if he continued to act like this she would... she would... she would just have to hit him on the head. Knowledge knocks usually worked pretty well with Naruto.
“I... Gomen,” Naruto muttered. “It's just... I haven't seen Sasuke at all for almost two weeks and... I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm really glad that he's stayed away but... I'm worried too.” He sighed and rubbed at his face, his traveling up to tangle in his hair as he bent his head. “I think... I hurt him but... I just wanted him to leave me alone and he wouldn't and then I got mad and... my life is hell...”
Sakura's weight settled on the mattress beside him and she looped an arm over his back while her hand came across her own body to grip, lightly, his bicep closest to her. “Shh... easy, Naruto. Take it slowly... and at least tell me enough so that I can understand what you're telling me. Start with what Sasuke was doing that made you so... unhappy... ok? And then tell me whatever you can or want to from there...” she hugged him a little and then leaned a little away to get a good look at him. Her hand settled on his back while the one that hand been on his arm landed on her far knee.
Naruto sighed shakily and said, “Actually... I think I should start with the night he left...” Slowly he began to tell her everything. He staggered a bit over the last moments of that night, especially the kiss, and he had to pause to get control of himself again. Once he had he picked up with first visit after Sasuke's return, shuddering as he remembered what Sasuke had said about him already being dead. By the time he got to the third visit he couldn't have stopped if he wanted to, the words just coming out of him without being commanded. And he didn't bother to hide any of his emotions, Sakura's comforting presence bringing down all his barriers. But when he got to the last visit, he just had to stop for a moment before the truly broke down.
Her mouth was set in a grim line as Naruto paused and then she hugged him. “So you hurt him like he hurt you...” she finished for him, summing the last bit up. She'd had no idea and all the while it was going on right under her nose. She wasn't much of a teammate to them if she was this pigheaded and blind. She realized, in the last few moments, that she honestly couldn't see herself with Sasuke any more. Her visions of a happy marriage and Uchiha babies had dissipated long before tonight. She'd known that something was different with Sasuke... had heard things from others... but now that she had a full explanation of what he really was... and it wasn't even that. She hadn't felt like she originally had for Sasuke... in a long time. Now though she brought her focus to Naruto. “So now... you've been left alone and have had time to think... and?” she pulled away again to look into misty blue eyes. She knew her own were a little watery as well, for him.
“I don't know!” Naruto wailed, standing up suddenly to pace around the room. “I don't know anymore! I want to see him but I don't want to be hurt again! I don't... I felt so dead right after he left... I don't want to feel like that again... I...” He stopped pacing. “He said... he asked me...” Naruto choked out, his voice heavy with indecision. “He said he loves me... and then I threw him away like he did me... but I just don't want to be hurt again... but I...” His mouth continued to move, but no words came out.
“Naruto?” Sakura cut in quietly, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She looked a lot older at the moment, though she didn't realize it. “Do you remember what I said to you a few weeks ago? About you being the only one that Sasuke has ever really paid attention to? The one I said he always strived to be equals with, the one he wanted to train with and be around....”
“Yeah...” he said slowly, wondering what she was getting at. What did any of that matter? That had all just led to Sasuke trying to kill him and later hurting him.
“Maybe... it took the shock of life completely without you... to make him realize... that he's loved you all along...” Teal colored eyes showed nothing but revelation and a small bit of wonderment. Soft pink lips still smiled faintly, that mysterious woman's smile. Sakura's heart was lighter than it had been in a long while.
Feeling not a little pole-axed, Naruto turned his head to look at her in confusion, his brow furrowed. And then suddenly revelation hit him and hit him hard. “Damn it! I have to find him!” Without even a goodbye Naruto leapt out through her window to begin a search of the whole village.
Rushing to the window Sakura shouted after him, “ASK KAKASHI-SENSEI!!!”
But that was all she was able to say before he left her sight completely.
“What was that all about...?!” Ino asked as she appeared in Sakura's window after almost getting knocked off the building by Naruto.
Sakura started back and blinked owlishly at Ino. “Uhm.... Naruto's looking for Sasuke...” she said without really thinking about it.
Ino blinked back, not expecting that. “...Huh?”
“Well... uhm. Naruto's looking for Sasuke... You wouldn't happen to know where he is would you?” Sakura asked with a slightly nervous laugh. She was incredibly off-guard at the moment.
“I wish I did... I haven't seen him at all in a little over two weeks.,” Ino sighed dejectedly. And here she'd thought she'd be able to snatch Sasuke's heart through his stomach... so to speak.
Sakura smiled a little getting herself back under control. “Oh... well, I'm sure Naruto will find him. You know how those two are.... Was there something you needed?”
Ino gave Sakura a funny look. “You know something I don't... Tell me...”
Sakura sighed. Better to let Ino rant and rave and be here - far away from the boys - than to let her find out on her own. “Ino... I think Sasuke just became unavailable...” and then she readied herself to hold Ino back, never knowing how well or poorly the girl would take something.
The blonde girl's blink was almost audible. “You can't possibly mean...” she said disbelievingly.
“I mean exactly that, Ino.” Sakura said seriously and kept a wary eye on the slightly stunned girl.
There was a long moment of silence before the yelling began. And Ino spent the rest of the afternoon tied to a chair in Sakura's room where her best friend could keep an eye on her... and away from a certain fox-boy.
