Chapter 14
Sasuke recovered from his surprise after a couple of seconds. "How long has that been here? Does lube expire?"
"Not sure how long, but I'd say whoever brought it here got it relatively early in the apocalypse, because this still has a shelf life of a year," Naruto answered and waggled the bottle again. "So nope, not expired yet, which is just plain luck, I guess."
"How do you even know that lube can expire?" Sasuke asked amused.
Naruto grinned. "Gaara and I once got stuck in a library, waiting for a herd to pass through. We weren't going to try fighting our way through that crowd, so we bunked down in that library and we spent some time reading." He shrugged; his smile growing mischievous. "The sexual health section was surprisingly detailed, let's just keep it at that."
"You know," Sasuke said and reached out, grabbing Naruto by his hips to pull him closer, "if you wanted some time alone, you could have just said so. Didn't need to make a rickety shed all cosy for this."
"Figured it would be rather awkward if we did it at your place with your family and all," Naruto smiled crookedly, curling his free hand around Sasuke's neck. "And the walls of the apartment building are rather thin."
Sasuke quirked an eyebrow; his amusement growing. "That sure you're going to be loud?"
He became slightly distracted when Naruto bit down on his lower lip, pressing their bodies so closely together, there was no space left. "We might find out if you play your cards right."
"Oh, we might, huh?" Sasuke smirked and quickly he whirled him around, pushing him onto the bed.
The frame groaned a bit in protest, but surprisingly it held. Naruto shoved himself backwards, getting himself more comfortably situated on the bed.
"You're lucky I tested out whether the bed's sturdy enough for our weight," he huffed, beckoning Sasuke to join him. "I could have ended up with my arse on the ground, you bastard."
"And how exactly did you test that?" Sasuke braced his right knee on the edge of the matrass, watching Naruto drop the bottle onto the bed next to them.
Naruto snickered, pushing his upper body up so that he could wriggle out of his jacket. He let it slide out of his hand onto the floor, sending some dust flying.
"I let myself fall onto the bed a couple of times to test how strong the frame still is," he explained. "Rather dusty, but hey, at least it proved that we won't fall through immediately."
"Thinking about everything, hm?" Sasuke leant towards the wall, placing his katana against it before getting rid of his own jacket. It felt somewhat strange, pulling off clothes in a place that wasn't his own house, but even when he pricked his ears he couldn't pick up the tell-tale sound of zombies grunting or moaning, so for now they were safe enough.
"Well, I can be pretty thorough when I'm motivated," Naruto smiled crookedly and dragged Sasuke down by his collar. As soon as he was close enough, Naruto brought his knees up, caging Sasuke between them.
"Good to know sex can motivate you," Sasuke murmured, bracing his hands on either side of Naruto's head so he wouldn't land on top of him.
"Sex with you motivates me," Naruto corrected him and clucked his tongue, tugging at his jeans. "Now come on, less chatting, more fucking."
"Very subtle," Sasuke teased, but wasn't opposed to the idea at all.
He captured Naruto's mouth in a deep kiss, swallowing his pleased moan. Between the two of them, they somehow managed to flick open the buttons of their jeans and lower the zipper, which Sasuke's dick appreciated quite a bit now that it wasn't compressed against the back of the zipper anymore.
"I'm always subtle," Naruto muttered, because of course he had to have the last word.
"Who's chatting now?"
They both groaned deeply when their cloth covered cocks rubbed against each other and Sasuke pulled back for a moment to lower his jeans more so that he wouldn't get jeans burn on his dick. Was it even possible to get jeans burn? Whatever, he wasn't going to test it. The corners of his mouth twitched when he took in the way Naruto wiggled to lower his jeans further, exposing smooth, strong thighs – and orange boxers.
"Orange, really?" Sasuke didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the garish colour.
Naruto pouted, dragging him back down. "Fuck off, orange is a cool colour, okay? And you don't get to be picky during an apocalypse!"
"Why do I have a feeling you were actually picky when it came to this underwear?" Sasuke mused, but kissed him again before he could think of a reply. They had more important things to do, anyways, besides arguing about the colour of underwear.
"Orange is orange," Naruto muttered, kissing him back almost desperately when Sasuke deliberately started gyrating their hips together; sparks shooting down his spine with every bump and roll against Naruto's hard prick.
"Come on, come on, get rid of them," Naruto babbled and tugged at Sasuke's underwear. "I don't want to walk around with spunk in my underwear; it's a bitch to clean."
"Lots of experience, huh?" But Sasuke acquiesced, using his position of being on top to pull both their underwear down, exposing their cocks.
"Yeeeeesssss," Naruto hissed, his eyes rolling back when their cocks brushed against each other without any sort of barrier this time. Whether it was an answer to Sasuke's question or a reaction to what was happening now wasn't clear, but Sasuke couldn't care less about that.
Not when he had the privilege of seeing Naruto's face so open and trusting for what might be the first time since they met each other. Not when he lowered his face into Naruto's neck and started sucking a kiss there, all while fumbling with the cap of the lube. Not when Naruto's breathy moan before it got cut off by teeth digging into his lower lip sent sparks of fire racing through Sasuke's veins when he rubbed the viscous gel between his fingers, warming it up.
He couldn't immediately discern a strange smell coming from it, so the lube must still be usable, but the state of the lube was rapidly pushed back and forgotten when Naruto rolled his hips upwards, letting his thighs fall open in a gesture that couldn't be misunderstood.
Heartbeat loud in his ear, Sasuke quickly slathered some of the lube on both their cocks so that the friction wouldn't turn painful and then turned his attention to what he couldn't exactly see in the dusk of the room, but which he had no problems finding once he slipped his hand between them, his wet fingers going straight past their cocks, sliding between Naruto's cheeks. Naruto's breathing hitched and Sasuke looked at him sharply, but there was no apprehension in those blue eyes, only lust that widened pupils and made blue eyes shimmer.
Lust that had Sasuke swallowing before he let himself be dragged down by Naruto again, meeting his lips in a bruising kiss while he teasingly brush the tip of his index finger across the tight furrow of Naruto's hole. It twitched underneath his touch; a twitch that travelled further, turning into shivers as they started moving more urgently against each other; the slickness of the lube making the thrusting movements a lot smoother.
Sasuke had to keep reminding himself to brace his elbow against the bed, lest he crushed Naruto with his weight, but it was hard to remember that when he could think about nothing else but Naruto's lips against his own, their tongues sneaking past swollen lips to play with each other; their cocks bumping and thrusting and gliding against each other, igniting the fire in their lower bellies even further; Sasuke's fingers between Naruto's arse cheeks, a twitching and clenching entrance slowly opening up the more his fingertip pressed against it until the first knuckle sank within him, hot muscles parting around the digit.
At the same time his finger slid deeper inside, spreading the lube, Sasuke feeling light-headed as if the pressure was around his head and not just around his finger – and he couldn't help but imagine how tight Naruto would feel when he would push into him with his cock – a calloused hand grabbed both their dicks and moved rapidly up and down; their thrusts losing coordination quickly as they chased after their rapidly growing pleasure. It was as if he was being burnt alive from the inside; all his senses alight and he was hyperaware of the moans and groans escaping their mouths whenever they were not quick enough to muffle them, of Naruto's one hand digging into his shoulder, his nails leaving crescent shaped marks behind even through the cloth, of Naruto's hot lips dragging across his neck, down to his collarbone where he bit him lightly before soothing even that small hurt. Of their breaths turning into heavy panting, kisses switching between deep and filthy and messy and fleeting. Of their bodies moving smoothly together as if they were made for each other, as if they were two pieces of a puzzle which had finally found each other.
When Sasuke came, it was with bright flashes across the back of his eyelids, with his ears ringing, and his hips messily thrusting down, chasing that high at the same time as Naruto erupted between them as well, missing their rucked up sweaters by just a hair length. It was difficult to care about the mess, however, when Naruto sighed so sweetly, his face hidden in Sasuke's neck as his body shuddered through the aftermath of his pleasure; his filthy hand staining the sheets underneath them as he grabbed a hold of them, as if he needed to ground himself.
Sasuke definitely felt like he needed to ground himself. He had never felt this out of control, this vulnerable in front of somebody before, and the thought that this should scare him briefly shot through his mind.
Then Naruto caught his eyes and he smiled almost shyly, almost sweet, and Sasuke bent down to kiss him again, not mourning his loss of control at all. Not when it was Naruto who had made that happen.
"Can you get my jacket?" Naruto asked, lifting his hips to pull on his jeans again once they were done resting.
It made for a distracting picture and Sasuke couldn't help but stare for a couple of seconds before he forced himself to look away. He rolled over and looked over the edge of the bed, searching for Naruto's jacket. He spotted it underneath his own jacket and tugged it free; the sound of a zipper sliding shut audible next to him. He got a hold on one of the jacket sleeves, but when he pulled it up, something fell from one of the pockets, landing on the floor with a dull 'thud'.
"Sorry about that," he muttered and threw Naruto his jacket before leaning down again, searching for what had just fallen.
He raised both eyebrows when he saw the wallet. The green material was frayed alongside the edges, the colour in some places fading away. It had fallen open and when he snatched it from the floor, something thin and light fluttered down.
"You still have your wallet?" Sasuke asked bemused, shifting the wallet from one hand to the other, so that he could grab the thin card.
"Hm, has a couple of important things in it," Naruto muttered. "And also out of habit, I suppose."
Sasuke couldn't even remember the last time he'd bothered picking up his wallet. It might be in a bag somewhere in his room, probably, but in a world where money no longer had any meaning, he saw no point in carrying a wallet still.
When he turned the thin card around and saw that it was actually a picture, Sasuke realised why Naruto was still carrying around a wallet. The picture had a younger looking Naruto in it, dressed in a bright orange T-shirt and white shorts, grinning widely in spite of his obviously bruised knees. He had his arm slung around the shoulders of a red haired boy, who while not smiling at all, still oozed a sense of calm. The boy was also dressed in a T-shirt, though his was a maroon colour, and his shorts were black. He was also rather pale, making his deep green eyes stand out even in the small picture.
Sasuke startled when the wallet was suddenly plucked out of his hand and he rolled onto his back; embarrassment making him uncomfortably hot when he caught Naruto staring at the picture. He cleared his throat, holding it out to him.
"Sorry, didn't mean to snoop," he apologised.
Naruto stared at the picture for a couple more seconds, his face unreadable, before he shook his head and accepted the picture. He didn't put it away just yet, however, staring down at it.
"This was taken by dad when he'd taken me and Gaara out for camping," he suddenly declared. He smiled wryly. "Of course I managed to be the only one to stumble down a hill covered with rocks."
"Did you go camping often?" Sasuke asked and sat up, raising his right knee, bracing his arm against it.
"Every summer at least once," Naruto confirmed and carefully tucked the picture back in the wallet. "We always took Gaara with us. His dad had never really been the type to take his kids out to camp." Something dark flashed across his eyes briefly. Then he blinked and his blue eyes cleared up.
"Sounds like a lot of fun," Sasuke said cautiously.
Naruto smiled. "Yeah, it really was. The amount of junk food we stuffed our mouths with … Unbelievable." He riffled through his wallet. "Here, these are my parents."
The picture he showed next was slightly more frayed and a bit more faded, as if it had been regularly taken out of the wallet. It showed a smiling man with blond hair and blue eyes – even if Naruto hadn't introduced them, this was clearly his father. His own eyes and hair colour were an obvious copy of his father's. His mother had beautiful long, red hair which was draped in loose curls around her. Her purple eyes sparkled mischievously even through the picture and she held one arm raised with her fist in the air. She was grinning widely and her husband had his arms wrapped around her waist. He was dressed in light coloured jeans and a simple white shirt while she was wearing a light purple dress which hugged her curves and flared open around her knees.
"You look a lot like your mum," Sasuke remarked.
Surprise flitted across Naruto's face before he smiled; his eyes flicking down to the picture. "Funny, mum always said I look like dad."
"The eyes and the hair, yes, but you've clearly got her face and her smile," Sasuke observed.
He hadn't had the chance yet to see Naruto smile or grin a lot, but the few times he'd been private to it, his smiles matched the one his mother was wearing in the picture.
When Naruto remained suspiciously silent, Sasuke glanced away from the picture and became slightly alarmed when he spotted the wet sheen covering Naruto's eyes.
"Hey, you okay?"
"Yeah, sure, I'm fine," Naruto said roughly and cleared his throat. "Sorry, it's just … Never really thought I'd hear someone comparing me to my parents again."
Sasuke pulled him into a hug, feeling Naruto shake as he released a shuddering exhale. "I tell you every day if you want me to," he murmured into his temple.
His response was arms tightening around his waist in return.
"Maybe I should suggest adding some sort of soundproofing material to the walls in the apartments," Sasuke mused aloud, keeping an eye on their surroundings while Naruto pulled the door as tightly shut as he could.
Naruto snorted and turned around to grin at him. "Like that wouldn't come across as a suspicious suggestion."
"Just thinking of how the inhabitants would appreciate not having too thin walls anymore," Sasuke retorted innocently.
"Uhuh, and definitely not because you want a private place in the compound to fuck me," Naruto stated bluntly, raising an eyebrow.
"You wound me with how lowly you think of me, truly," Sasuke deadpanned, smiling when Naruto chuckled. "Not having to worry about zombies sneaking up on us would be nice, though."
"What, you're not a fan of a little bit of thrill in your life?" Naruto teased, sliding his crossbow over his shoulder.
"Not that kind of thrill," Sasuke said dryly and they started walking back in the direction of the compound. "A risk of dying doesn't really do it for me."
"Do you even know what living is then?" Naruto asked gravely.
He squawked when Sasuke bumped their shoulders together, pushing him off balance and nearly into some bushes.
"You claim you don't like thrills and there you go, nearly killing me through zombie infested bushes, I see how it is now," Naruto huffed, puffing up his cheeks.
"If they were infested with zombies, you wouldn't be whining now," Sasuke retorted.
"Aren't people supposed to be more mellow after coming their brains out?" Naruto complained. "You don't sound that damn mellow to me."
Sasuke smirked and grabbed Naruto's hand when it swung past him, feeling lighter than he had in months even with potential zombies nearby. "I've rested and am in full control of all my faculties again."
"Clearly I didn't make you come hard enough then," Naruto muttered and squinted at him.
Sasuke's smirk widened. "Consider it a challenge for next time then."
"Oh, you bet I will!"
Sasuke had to give it to Karin: her patience had improved with leaps and bounds since she had set foot in the compound. It was almost a month after she'd witnessed Sasuke and Naruto sharing a kiss that she decided it was apparently finally time to breach the subject.
Bending down to repair one of the traps, she asked faux casually, "So how was your date with Naruto-kun last week?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Sasuke muttered, checking one of the strings they used to catch rabbits. It looked worn out and frayed; maybe birds had been pecking at it. That wouldn't be the first time and he set about replacing the string with a new one.
"Uhuh, that coy bullshit doesn't work on me," she said bluntly and crossed her arms on top of her knees. She was sitting on her haunches and the position had to be uncomfortable, but she simply kept staring at him. "Do both yourself and me a favour and cut the crap, will you? Kiba said you two didn't show up until several hours later."
"For fuck's sake, he babbled?" he groaned and glared down at the string he was tying. A bunch of fucking gossipers, that was who they all were. Didn't they have anything better to do than to gossip during a goddamn apocalypse?
"He was being a good guard and noting how long it took you both to return," she replied airily. "So fess up, how was the date?"
He was not going to tell her what they had done. "It was as good as any date in a zombie infested forest can be," he answered dryly.
"Man, you're no fun," she pouted and rose up. "Not even going to give me the smallest detail, huh?"
"You got that right," he confirmed. "I'm not interested in becoming even more of a subject for the local gossip."
"It's not gossip," she huffed, but didn't really offer an alternative either. "The date must have gone really well, though, considering Naruto-kun now smiles in greeting every time."
The comment was so random that it made him stare at her. "He smiled in greeting," he echoed dubiously.
She nodded fervently. "Yeah! He never used to do that before until he started dating you. Mind, he still won't really talk with the rest of us, but hey, he's smiling now at least!" She came over to his side and playfully nudged his shoulder. "Makes me realise what you saw in him; guy's got a killer smile."
"You're an idiot," he sighed and shook his head. After testing the strength of the loop, he stood up, making his way to the next trap they had to check.
Now that they were finally inching slowly into spring, they all held hope that the traps would soon be bursting with food again. He and Karin had been sent out to check the traps on the eastern side of the compound; other groups would take care of the remaining traps later this week.
"Serious now," Karin murmured a little while later. "I'm glad the two of you found each other. I don't think I've ever seen you this happy before. It's a good look."
The last was said more in jest, but there was still a hint of solemnity clinging to it, which made Sasuke stare down at the trap half hidden underneath dead, rotten leaves. When he thought about it, he supposed, yeah, it had been quite a while since he last could remember feeling this happy. Even with zombies still roaming around and the consequences tied to that, there was a lightness inside of him that he hadn't felt in years. A lightness that fluttered and zigzagged like a maniac every time he laid eyes on Naruto. He would think it embarrassing if he actually cared to be bothered about it. Naruto made him happy, so what? After all the shit they had went through so far, he thought he deserved at least a bit of happiness.
"Man, you really are smitten."
Karin's laugh tore him out of his thoughts and he blinked, scowling half-heartedly at her. "I'm not smitten," he sighed.
"Yeah, you are," she smiled, tapping his nose. "You probably don't even realise it, but you were smiling just now – and I very much doubt it's because you found a functioning trap."
"So what if I'm happy?" he muttered, swatting her hand away. "Didn't know that was a crime."
"It's not," she said and her face softened. "It's just nice to know that we can still find some happiness in this world."
He thought about Naruto, back at the compound, most likely helping Itachi with his defence classes. He thought about their plans to spend the afternoon together, once their chores were finished. The butterflies still raced like mad in his stomach, even after nearly two months of being together. He didn't want those butterflies to ever stop.
Yeah, some happiness, no matter how small, could still be found even now.
"Hey, Sasuke, your lover left you a note!" Anko called out to Sasuke as soon as he and Karin walked through the gates.
"I'm going to check on Iruka, see if he needs some help still," Karin murmured and turned in the direction of their personal fields.
"A note?" Sasuke furrowed his eyebrows and walked to Anko, who was going through all her work supplies it seemed, judging by how much was stalled out on the table. "Why did he leave me a note?"
They had agreed to meet up near the gates once they were both finished. Had Naruto finished earlier and had he not wanted to wait outside after all? That would be a first, considering he normally always waited until Sasuke was back inside the compound.
"He needed to leave on a run apparently and gave this to me so I could play messenger between the two of you," she said and rolled her eyes. "Do keep me out of your private life, thank you. If this is some sort of sex thing, I don't want to know."
"He wasn't scheduled for a run," he muttered, ignoring her last comment, but accepted the note. He tried to remember if the weekly run had changed to today, but he couldn't recall either Itachi or father mentioning something like that. The groups for the runs had all been established three weeks ago for the upcoming two months as well and Naruto hadn't been scheduled for this week, he was certain.
As a matter of fact the next run Naruto would normally join was the same run Sasuke was going to participate in. He had a sneaky suspicion that father had arranged that on purpose, but he wasn't going to complain about that. He and Naruto had proven to work well together on runs.
Sasuke,
Sorry, but I was asked to check out a town in the northeast to see if there's anything valuable still there. The trip is supposed to take four hours, but the weather looks shit, so I don't know whether I'll be home tonight.
Someone of the compound is with me, a guy named Tobi, I think? Anyways, so don't worry, I'm not alone.
I'll be back as soon as I can, don't miss me too much! :P
P.S. Just to make you less of a worrywart, here's the place's name
The second he read the town's name, Sasuke's blood turned to ice.
Stumbling noises downstairs woke up Sasuke. Instantly he was on high alert and he grabbed one of his knives, before slipping quietly out of the bed. Silently he crept out of his room, but relaxed when he recognised those footsteps. Then he frowned, realising it was rather late for him to return.
"Did the run go bad?" he asked as he descended the staircase.
He came to an abrupt halt when he saw both Itachi and Kisame standing in the hallway. Aghast he took in their bloodied coats and trousers; his hands growing clammy with the first stirrings of panic.
"Are you - "
"We're fine," Itachi hurried to reassure him and immediately removed his coat, showing he was unharmed.
Kisame followed swiftly, looking oddly solemn.
"What's going on here?" Father asked perplexed, coming downstairs as well. He stopped right behind Sasuke, his voice sharp when he demanded, "What the hell happened? I thought you were going to stay the night there?"
"Too dangerous," Kisame answered grimly. "We managed to get away by the skin of our teeth, boss."
Sasuke could feel father's body tensing up. "Come, let's go to the living room where you can tell me everything."
They all trooped into the living room; Sasuke stuffing his hands underneath his armpits in a fruitless attempt to stave off the cold. He should have grabbed a jacket or a robe, but his brother being unexpectedly home had distracted him.
"I thought you were just supposed to check out the town?" Sasuke asked suspiciously. "What went wrong?"
"What didn't go wrong?" Itachi sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He dropped down on the couch, rubbing his forehead. "I've never seen such a massive herd of zombies gathered in one place."
"There had to be at least a thousand, if not more," Kisame added; his face gaining an eerie look in the light of the candles that father was lightening up. "We didn't even notice them at first, that's the most fucked up thing about it all."
"How can you not notice so many zombies?" Sasuke asked incredulously. If they were actually with at least a thousand, shouldn't that be pretty damn noticeable?
"They'd been stuffed inside those houses," Itachi said and rolled his shoulders, frowning. "We must have triggered some kind of trap, because suddenly they came all pouring down from every corner. We got out of there while we still could; there's no way to enter that place safely."
"You said they'd been stuffed inside the houses," Father remarked warily. "You mean to tell me that someone went around and gathered them up?"
Kisame's mouth thinned. "We can't say for sure, because we didn't see anybody," he admitted begrudgingly. "For all we know, whoever pulled this stunt is long gone already. Who pulled that shit doesn't matter, though. There's no way to enter that town safely, no matter which direction you take. It's completely overrun by those dead sons of bitches, going back there would be suicide."
"We could wait until they've dispersed," Father suggested tentatively, but he didn't seem keen on his own idea.
Itachi disagreed as well. "That might take months if not longer. We think the place might have been a community at one point, because they had the entire place surrounded with gates. The zombies are basically trapped there."
"Trapped and way too eager for some human flesh," Kisame added and grimaced. "I'm not the type to pull up my nose at some zombie killing, but trying to get rid of them all would be nigh impossible. We'd be wasting time and energy for nothing."
"Guess we can't always be so lucky," Father said sourly, resting his hands on his hips. "I will tell the Board what happened in the morning. We'll take that place off the list and change the roster in favour of other places. No point in risking lives for nothing. You two need a check-up from Tsunade-sama?"
"No need, I'm fine," Kisame grunted and rose up, stretching his back. "Those bastards scared the shit out of me, but they didn't get to do anything else."
"I'm fine as well," Itachi confirmed. "We got out of there just in time."
"So far the fun trip," Kisame sighed and left, going to his own home.
"If they are with so many, shouldn't we be worried they'll eventually break through and make their way here?" Sasuke asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Even if they manage to get loose, I doubt the entire group would make their way over here," Itachi replied. "Even at full speed, the trip still took us four hours to get back here. In the event of the gates no longer holding them back, I foresee they would be distracted before they can make their way here."
"Be that as it may," Father said, "we're not going to tempt fate either. We'll stay clear from that area. Under no circumstances will anyone be ever allowed to go back there."
AN2: Ah angst, how I love thee. Now I'm off to bed, because clearly I'm an idiot.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next chapter! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
