Temari and Kankuro stood in the Kazekage’s office, their mouths wide open, their faces blank and pale.
Frozen, both of them just stared at their fathers left overs. Until Temari got back into reality closing the door behind her.
"What happened here?" she sobbed and felt sick at the sight in front of her. The shock let tears fell down her face. She had seen this many times. Though this time it had been a family member. Even if Temari didn't feel close to her father, seeing this made her heart stop a few beats.
It was almost sun rise. For some reason both of them had known where to look at for evidence.
But that was nothing both had expected to find.
Kankuro wrapped his arms around her sister, trying to comfort her with little circles he drew on her back.
"He must have threatened them again... Maybe Gaara lost his temper but this time against father... Gaara wouldn't have done it if either his or Hinatas life hadn't been in danger" the brown haired man tried to explain. Not just for his sister's comfort, also for his own.
He swallowed hard as he looked at his father's blood, coating the wooden floor.
"He must have had his reasons" he now stated, almost completely convinced of himself.
He felt Temari nod at his chest. Still crying she withdrew his embrace and looked at him with serious eyes.
"They will kill Hinata and Gaara if they will find them. I guess it's just a matter of time until they find out what happened" Temari determined in a sour voice and shivered. The thought of losing her little brother was horrible. She loved Gaara. And she could not lose him. She hadn't told him yet that she loved him!
"We have to look for something that could help them" Kankuro suggested and his sister nodded again. Kankuro left the room and watched the hallways while Temari threw one last glance at her father's remainings before she took a deep breath, wiped her tears away and whispered:
"I know you always hated me because I was a girl and I reminded you of mom. Maybe I reminded you too much of her. A father should never do things like that to his daughter. You're a pig and I'm glad that you are finally dead" throwing one last glance at "him" she left the Kazekages office with a smile on her face.
You finally got what you deserved.
Days went by. Gaara and Hinata never stayed at one place for long. They kept moving. Only for the nights they searched for different places to sleep. Trees, caverns, even old barns. They had no specific destination. They just needed time to figure out what to do next.
At one day, a really hot one, Hinata and Gaara hid in a cavern behind a waterfall. From outside the waterfall the cavern was invisible. Just Hinata had seen it with her Byakugan.
Hinata sat next to a fire Gaara had prepared. It was already dawn and the weather became chilly. They sat across each other, watching the flames in front of them silently.
"Gaara?" the black haired girl asked, breaking the silence. At her voice Gaara rose his head to meet her eyes to indicate her he was listening.
"What is this power you have? Where does it come from?"
For days he had asked himself when Hinata would want to talk about what had happened. Because she had seemed so shocked he let her decide when she was ready.
"When I was born, Sunagakure was at war with other villages. We were weak and my father was afraid Suna would get destroyed. So he let the Shukaku get sealed inside of me. I should be the weapon of Suna everyone should fear. What he didn't know... My mother also sealed some of her chakra within me. The sand that protects me is my mother's chakra."
Hinata nodded and thought about what Gaara had said. She opened her mouth to say something but closed it and kept silent for a minute.
"When I came to Suna, I was scared because I remembered the 12 year old killing people for fun. And whenever I tried to start that topic with Temari or Kankuro they were avoiding it." carefully choosing her words on her sentence she hoped to not hurt Gaara with what she had said. But his face kept emotionless. So she continued.
"Are you in control of your demon?" she asked and this time Gaara's eyes started to glisten in a negative way.
"Are you scared of me?" he asked harshly.
"No, Gaara. I'm not scared. I was.. But not anymore. If I had been scared all the time I wouldn't have kissed you..." she whispered, her face turning a deep red, her eyes darting downwards.
She couldn't see it at that moment, but a smile appeared on Gaara's also flushed face.
"Shukaku got extracted a few years ago." Gaara explained, relieved that Hinata wasn't actually scared of him. "I died when they did it. This old woman revived me. And..." he stopped and thought if telling her was a good idea. But he trusted her. She had saved him. She had protected him. Not only from his father... But also... From loneliness.
"Shortly after I felt that some of Shukaku's chakra is still left in me." Hinata's eyes got wider though she listened carefully.
"I'm in control of it. It's much easier than before. He is not as powerful as before. It's just a tiny bit of his chakra that is still inside of me."
Hinata nodded, she seemed more relaxed though she hadn't look afraid before. Just surprised.
"I have to tell you something, Gaara" Hinata confessed silently. He knitted his non-existent eyebrows and waited for her to continue.
"At our wedding night..." both blushed at the thought of it. Hinata giggled before she took a deep breath to continue. "I dreamed of your mom."
"My mom?" Gaara was stunned. He had always wondered if she would appear in his dreams.
"She told me, that I should take care of you. That she had made a mistake by thinking your father wouldn't hurt you... Her chakra didn't protect her from his insults because he had sworn her to raise you right, to treat you good..."
Gaara felt heat crawling up his body.
"Why would she say that? Why would she care? She never loved me!" he snapped at her. "Why are you telling me? It was just a dream!"
"No, it was not! And it's not true. Gaara, she loved you, she still loves you. Why do you think would she seal some of her chakra inside of you that is to protect you?"
"I don't believe you." Gaara's gaze was cold and hurt. Like the night Rasa had beaten him up and his siblings and her had put him to the hospital.
"She told me that her chakra wouldn't protect you anymore, because I am now here to protect you. I guess she sealed her remaining chakra inside of me" she continued, ignoring his ranting.
"That's ridiculous! Stop talking about my mother, you have no idea!" Hinata was sure she saw his eyes filling with tears. Maybe she had gone too fast... She hadn't known that Gaara thought she had never loved him.
"How do you explain what I did to your father?" she asked and watched him carefully.
He rose his head and looked at her shocked. He had forgot about that.
SHE had crushed him! SHE had used his jutsu. She had captured his father in a sand coffin and had crushed him with Desert Funeral.
Both of them stayed silent for some time. Until Gaara spoke up again.
"So you're now my guardian spirit?"
"I think so" Hinata shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know how that happened. I just know that I woke up, coughing blood because the sand had gotten everywhere. I had scratches on my body from where Karura had buried my with her chakra. Her chakra is powerful... "
It appeared strange to Gaara that Hinata talked about it like she was talking about the weather. She seemed to have thought about it the whole time they had been away from Suna. She seemed to understand what had happened although he didn't.
"My father..." Gaara whispered as he remembered the change of Hinatas eye color when she had fought Rasa. "He called you Karura..."
"I always thought Shukaku let me use this jutsu... But really it was my mom..."
"I promised her to take care of you, Gaara." Hinata suddenly said.
"And I want to keep that promise. That's why I'm going to leave."
"What do you mean by that?" confused he shook his head.
"I will turn myself in so you won't get hurt" Hinata answered shortly. She seemed dead serious about it.
"Hinata..." Gaara started pleadingly.
"It's final. I already made my decision." she said harshly.
"But its not only your decision to make! We... We are married!" Gaara stated pissed but blushed at his words, which made him even angrier.
"I have a word in this, too!"
"Alright. What would you suggest?"
"I'll figure something out. Just allow me a few more days!"
Hinata sighed and thought of it for a moment.
"Okay" she finally whispered and gave him a gentle smile.
Gaara sighed inwardly, relieved that she had agreed to give him more time.
Though what Gaara didn't know... Maybe she wouldn't leave tonight. But she was going to leave soon. Without him.
