Author's Note: For those who skipped the violence of chapter 13, here's a quick recap. Sakura was raped and tortured. Naruto and the team from Konoha came to her rescue. She tried to talk to Naruto on the way back, but couldn't communicate well enough before she passed out.
Hatake Kakashi hated hospitals. Nonetheless, he stood in the small room, looking down on his favorite pink-haired kunoichi as he stood next to his former boss, Senju Tsunade. “How is she?”
Tsunade sighed. Her young apprentice was like the daughter she never had. “She’s been through hell, Kakashi. Multiple rapes, including anal. Bruises, contusions, cuts. 3 broken ribs that had a piss-poor heal – we had to rebreak and reset them. Some asshole carved obscene words into her flesh in several places. Two missing toes – we had to take a bit more of her foot to seal the wound properly. We’ll grow a prosthesis for her once she’s healed enough. Also… she was pregnant.”
Kakashi held back tears at the report. He’d seen Naruto, so he knew it was bad, but that list… “Damn… When will she be able to talk?”
Tsunade shrugged. “She needs rest and she’ll be here for some time. I take it from your question, you expect her to know something important?”
Kakashi nodded solemnly, “Indeed. Someone in the Yamakagure militia wants to help us stop a war. The retrieval team caught a glimpse of him, but Sakura may have more detailed information for us.”
Tsunade wrote a note quickly in the kunoichi’s chart. “I understand, Kakashi. You’ll be notified the moment she wakes up. She isn’t under anesthesia or anything now. She could wake up in 5 minutes or 5 hours. It’s hard to say.”
“Thank you, Tsunade, but if it’s all the same to you, I’ll get a cup of coffee and stay here.”
Tsunade raised an eyebrow, Hatake Kakashi staying in a hospital voluntarily, even as a visitor, was most unusual. “Suit yourself, Hokage-sama.”
…
3:00 am
Kakashi stared out at the bright winter sky as he sat at Sakura’s bedside, an orange jacketed book open in his hand, as he considered the growing casualty list on his watch. They’d lost two ANBU last week protecting the four tails and Sakura had been maimed. With two major wars and countless skirmishes under his belt, the Hokage knew the list would only grow. While he didn’t have biological children, sending out these young shinobi felt like sending his own young to fight for him. It tore his battle-scarred heart to pieces that he couldn’t protect everyone by himself.
The sounds of the stirring kunoichi drew him from his thoughts. “Sakura? Sakura, you’re home.”
Sakura’s eyes fluttered open, the dull ache of her partially healed body assaulting her senses. She immediately recognized herself in a Konoha hospital bed. She groaned softly, looking around the room. Her eyes locked with the dark black orbs of her former sensei. “Kakashi?” she could tell they’d healed her throat, but her voice still came out soft and weak.
“Yes, Sakura, I’m right here. You’re safe now.” He reached out slowly, patting the top of her head gently as he wanted to reassure her. Knowing what he did of torture, he knew a friendly touch might not be well received.
Sakura closed her eyes and breathed deeply, grateful for Kakashi’s presence. She allowed herself a moment to simply feel his care for her. She reopened her bright green orbs, the will of fire streaming hot from her gaze, “Kakashi, I have important information for you.” Unfortunately, her voice didn’t match her eyes as she could barely speak above a whisper. She brought a bandaged hand to her sore throat. Noticing the bandages and realizing she’d already had chakra infusions, the frustrated medic spoke softly once more, “Get Yamanaka Ino. My voice won’t last, and I can’t write like this.”
Kakashi nodded, “Of course. We’ll get you something to drink too. I’ll be right back.”
…
Ino and Shikamaru raced to the hospital room. They knew Sakura had come in poor condition several hours earlier, and being summoned to the hospital at this hour had both her friends extremely nervous. They’d lost Neji in the war; hopefully they weren’t about to lose their sweet cherry blossom too.
Ino flew through the door with Shikamaru at her heels, relieved at the sight of Sakura sitting up in bed with Kakashi helping her sip a cup of tea. Relief quickly turned to fury. “What the hell? You summon us to the hospital at three am and she’s not dying?”
Sakura chuckled, nearly spitting her tea. “It’s good to see you too forehead.” Her tiny voice squeaked hoarsely.
Kakashi nursed another sip of tea down her as he explained. “Sakura’s injuries make it impossible for her to write and difficult to speak. Therefore she asked for your assistance, Miss Yamanaka. Considering the nature of her report and the value of time at this point, I sent for Shikamaru as well.”
The shadow ninja replied, “hmmm. Well Temari will undoubtedly be relieved once I finally get home. It’s good to have you back Sakura. We’ve missed you.” He took a place standing near the foot of the bed.
Ino leapt to her friend’s side, kissing her on the cheek, afraid to hug her for all the bandages, “Anything for you, Forehead. I’m glad you’re not dying. We have too much shopping still to do.”
The pink-haired medic smiled, “Since I know your jutsu, I think I have everything filed to make it easy. Just … be careful, okay?”
Ino sat down in the bedside chair, “Of course, Sakura. I’ll be extra careful in there.” She flew through the hand signs easily “Mind merge jutsu!”
Ino surveyed the interior of Sakura’s mind as her medic friend greeted her warmly.
“Sorry about the mess in here; it’s usually just me.”
The mind reader balked, “Just you? I seem to recall you having company, Forehead.”
Sakura smiled, “Oh we merged some time ago. I learned to be honest with myself; to accept me for me. So, yes, just me here… Be careful about what you open. Some of those files are… unpleasant.”
Ino nodded, “I see. Show me what you want me to know; what you want in your report.”
“That pile over there. Just watch you step.” Sakura motioned to an irregular stack of files.
Ino flipped through the information, her jutsu quickly processing weeks of Sakura’s memories, organizing her own files as she went. “Sheesh, Forehead. You gotta work on your filing girl. This place is a mess.” Seemingly finished, Ino turned back to face her friend, and stepped on a land mine.
The blonde’s eyes widened as the stack of files she’d been warned against played out in her own mind’s eye – rape, torture, pain, and… love? A blizzard, tender kisses, and… a child?!?
Ino snapped to attention; the mind to mind connection broken by the onslaught of violent memories. She gasped, processing the weeks of information even though she’d only been in Sakura’s head ten minutes.
Kakashi and Shikamaru both straightened up at Ino’s return to consciousness. “Well?” The Hokage queried.
Ino stood at Sakura’s bedside. Her hand glowing green with chakra, she moved it slowly over Sakura’s abdomen.
The pained look on Ino’s face as their eyes locked gave Sakura the news she feared most; her baby was gone…
A deep, primal wail, unlike any they’d heard before came from the depths of the woman’s soul and out her mouth as the stinging pain of loss tore through the battered kunoichi. “Whyyyyyyy!” Sakura curled into a fetal position as sob after sob wracked her small frame.
Tears streamed down Ino’s face at her friend’s great sorrow. The intimacy of her knowledge only made the pain worse. She dove into Shikamaru, her face buried in his jonin vest as her knees went weak beneath her.
Shikamaru caught his teammate. Ninja reflexes were a handy thing. He looked to Kakashi in confusion.
Kakashi glanced at Ino and Shikamaru, then looked back to the distraught kunoichi in the hospital bed. He’d known Sakura seven years now, and in all that time he’d never seen anything like this from her. Not when Sasuke left, not when Neji died, not when her father passed away. He did the only thing he could think of. Kakashi climbed into the bed, spooning his body around Sakura as his strong arms encircled her waist. He spoke softly in her ear, “Sakura. I’m here. I have you. I’m here.”
The women wept this way for several minutes. Sakura cried herself to sleep in the Hokage’s arms. Ino finally caught her breath and stepped away from Shikamaru.
“Thanks, Shika… That was… Wow… I needed a shoulder, you know?”
Shikamaru still held on to Ino’s hand. He’d never seen her or Sakura like this. Troublesome indeed. “No problem.” He noticed the sleeping medic encircled with Kakashi. “Sorry to push, but what do you have to report?”
Ino sat back down, the angle with Kakashi was a bit odd, but no one wanted to wake Sakura. She spoke quietly, going step by step through Sakura’s intelligence gathering as Shikamaru took copious notes. She had everything – names, dates, building layouts, faces, ninja capabilities.
Finally, Shikamaru asked a few questions to clarify his thinking, “There’s one thing I don’t understand. This guy Saizo, the security chief who’s feeding all this to Sakura, what’s his angle? She says he and the Yamakage grew up together – academy, same genin team, dinners at each other’s houses… Why would someone with a long history of loyalty suddenly betray his friend? Especially knowing we’ll probably assassinate the guy.”
Ino detailed, “According to Sakura, not only does the Yamakage hold absolute power, he has no tolerance for opinions counter to his own. All his advisors that ever tried to correct him, even privately and appropriately, they’ve all ended up dead or severely demoted. The man’s a ruthless dictator surrounded by yes men. Anyway, Saizo’s work in security has meant he’s never needed to contradict the kage. But the looming war poses a very personal threat to the man. He has three sons, the oldest being a chunin. They’d be on the front lines of the war. In the meantime, the Yamakage’s immediate family all have nepotism granted positions where they will be safe.”
Shikamaru stroked his chin thoughtfully, “hmmm… the father more loyal to his own children than his close friend. Especially when said friend is being an asshole… It is interesting, he indicates for succession Saizo intends to see the Feudal Lord title return to a hidden child of the last Feudal Lord while the Kage title would be passed to another man. His own position would remain the same. He wants to help us stop this war, but beyond that his loyalty seems firm with his own country.”
Kakashi chimed in from his place on Sakura’s bed. “Excellent analysis, Nara.” He yawned, suddenly aware of not having any sleep in some time. “I look forward to seeing your written report and recommendations on my desk in the morning.” He snuggled against the warm kunoichi, adjusting his head above hers on the pillow.
Shikamaru sighed, “Yes, Hokage-sama. Come on Ino. Let’s stop by the house for some breakfast and to let Tems know things are going to be alright.”
…
Two powerful shinobi eyed each other carefully in the back alley. The dark night obscured their cloaked faces on the cold winter night.
“Hatake Kakashi. What a pleasant surprise.” The enormously tall man considered the Hokage warily.
“You must be Saizo. Your reputation precedes you.” The copy nin took in the exceedingly tall man. It was a rare man that made him look up, but this Mountain ninja was easily one of the tallest he’d ever seen.
“I’m curious, why have you come here yourself, Hatake? Does the Leaf have no other assassins?” He asked the Hokage.
“I like to get out of the office now and then. I miss field work. And, I wanted to see for myself, the face of a man who would betray his own kage to death. A man he’s known closely for many years.” Kakashi could be pushing his luck, but some things must be well established before taking action.
“Actually, it’s a simple choice. Gut wrenching, but simple. I’ve watched one of my closest comrades slide down the slope of greed and the lust for power. Hisoki always resented accountability; now he has none. Am I to sit back and watch him sacrifice my children along with many other men’s children on a war our nation cannot win? Sir, I am no coward. I’m sworn to protect this village and I will do my duty. If there was a better way, I’d have taken it already.” The strong voice of determination added to the fierce words.
Kakashi pressed on, “I see. Then why involve the leaf? Why not just kill him yourself? Why not hire a rogue ninja?”
“Rogue ninja. Ha. Good one, Hatake. I can’t afford anyone who would be reliable enough and discreet. As to me…two reasons. One, it’s hard. He’s one of my closest friends. I can’t take the chance I might hesitate even slightly – you know what that does in combat. Two, our government has taken actions recently that could bring well deserved wrath on our people. I don’t just want your help with the assassination, I want your cooperation going forward. I want my people spared.” The Chief explained.
“Very well then. When and where am I killing him?” Kakashi asked simply, as though he’d asked for directions to the nearest coffee shop.
Now it was Saizo’s turn for questions, “Is it that easy for you to kill another man? To dispose of a shinobi opposed to your ideals?”
“I know what he did to Sakura. Killing him will be more than easy; I look forward to it.” Kakashi replied with a murderous glint in his eyes.
“Kakashi… How is the kunoichi? How is Sakura?” The inspector asked intently.
Kakashi did a double take as he noted the calm man’s serious interest and the familiarity of his given name. “She’s recovering. The hospital is busy making her a new pair of toes.”
Saizo winced, “I’m sorry. I… I did my best to protect her and keep our cover. Is she… Is she still with child?”
Kakashi recognized the symptoms of a man in love. He also knew this kind of loss too well. “No. she is not pregnant anymore.”
Saizo stiffened, “I see. Well, give the kunoichi my regards. We wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t played her part so well.”
Kakashi nodded, “Of course… So, when and where?”
Saizo explained the details, “Hisoki will be having dinner and… entertainment… at my home tomorrow evening. When he leaves, he’ll be happy, relaxed, and drunk. There’s only one road into the town center from my house open this time of year. The best locations are marked on this map.” He handed Kakashi a small scroll. “If you can make it look like a robbery, that would be most helpful.”
Kakashi looked over the scroll, memorizing it quickly before it disintegrated. “Shouldn’t be a problem.”
It was the simplest assassination mission he’d had in years.
…
A dazed Hatake Kakashi sat in the Hokage’s chair across the desk from the Godaime Hokage. He blinked several times, her words not connecting with the synapses of his brain. “You want me to what?”
Tsunade sighed in exasperation, “I want you to come to the hospital and sleep with Sakura… Good grief! Sleep! Not, have sex with her. Hatake, get your mind out of the gutter!”
Kakashi explained, “Look I just got back in town from a … conference … late last night. I haven’t slept much the past few days. The last place I should be is the hospital. Why on earth would you want me to sleep with Sakura anyway?”
“Look, it’s just a theory. She’s been in the hospital for a week now. It’ll be a month or so before her new toes are ready to attach. She’s ready to go home except for this one little problem with sleep.”
Kakashi scratched his head, “Why don’t you just give her some sleeping pills and send her on her way?”
Tsunade ran her hand over her face with frustration. “Hatake, we’ve been trying something different every night to get her stabilized. Look, the only unmedicated, peaceful sleep she’s had since her return was with you next to her. It doesn’t matter what we give her; she wakes up in the middle of the night screaming and attacks anyone in range. I have two nurses now on medical leave and the rest of the staff are petrified of having her on their shift. The only other alternative is chakra control bracelets, which I don’t want to resort to for obvious reasons.”
Kakashi stroked his chin thoughtfully, “Hmmmm… I see… So, your theory is the comfort of a warm and familiar human will help?”
Tsunade shifted nervously, “That was my first theory. Naruto volunteered and failed. Although, at least he was able to defend himself without either of them getting seriously injured.”
Kakashi’s eyes widened, “That doesn’t seem terribly encouraging, Tsunade.”
“Kakashi, please, just come to the hospital and stay with her tonight.” The medical ninja practically begged.
“I have a better idea. Why don’t you just send her home with me?” The Hokage suggested.
“Send her home with you?” Tsunade raised an eyebrow in warning.
Kakashi rolled his eyes, “Tsunade, I’m not going to molest Sakura. Look, you said she’s ready to go except for the sleep problem. If you are right and she sleeps fine, she can do it just as well at my place as the hospital. If you are wrong, I’m pretty sure I can still handle Sakura either place. I know I’ll sleep better in my own bed. Plus, she could probably use a change of scenery and a home cooked meal. Or takeout.”
Tsunade crossed her arms across her chest, “Fine. But if I have any reason to think you’ve touched her inappropriately, Hokage or not, I will kill you Kakashi.”
…
The old teacher and his former student chatted over tempura at the Hokage’s kitchen table. “I’m sorry for not actually cooking, Sakura. I just got back in town late last night; I haven’t had time to shop.”
“Oh? Where have you been? I thought the Hokage was practically chained to that desk.” Sakura chuckled at the odd thought of Kakashi actually chained to his own desk.
“I do leave the office and even the village now and then, Sakura.” He replied casually.
“So… What was the special occasion? Some boring conference or were you sneaking out on a mission?” She offered.
Kakashi nearly choked on a pepper. Coughing, he looked back up at the suddenly serious kunoichi.
“Oh, shit. You really did go on a mission. Kakashi, what the hell?!?” Sakura scolded him despite his position of authority.
Kakashi held her hand. He hadn’t planned to tell her, at least not yet. And he definitely hadn’t planned to disclose the details of his involvement. “Sakura, sometimes a shinobi must take care of business personally… Saizo asked me to give you his regards. The Yamakage is dead.”
Sakura stomped her right foot in frustration, “Dammit! Kakashi I wanted to kill that piece of shit myself!”
“I’m sorry, Sakura. Time was a factor and you were injured.” He answered simply.
“Wait… Time I understand. Why did you go?” The kunoichi asked quizzically.
“I needed to be certain it was the right thing for Konoha to do. I had a bit of a chat with Chief Inspector Saizo.” Kakashi watched her carefully.
“Saizo...” The wistful tone in Sakura’s voice told far more than her words. “How is he?”
“Saizo is well. He asked about you… and your child… His child.” Kakashi laid the cards out for her. He couldn’t quite explain why, but he just didn’t want to hold anything back from her. Perhaps it was the guilt of having sent her on a mission where she lost body parts. In any case, the jinni was not going back in the bottle.
A tear made its way down Sakura’s cheek as her voice trembled, “I wanted the baby, you know. I just couldn’t tell them in time.”
Kakashi squeezed her hand in reassurance. “I know Sakura. I am truly sorry for your loss. Sorry for everything you suffered on this mission.”
More tears flowed from red rimmed eyes, “As long as we stopped the war, it’s all worth it, Kakashi.”
“Thank you, Sakura… Shall we get some rest?” He asked.
“Yes, of course. You must be exhausted.” She wiped her face quickly.
…
Sakura emerged from the bathroom in a long flannel nightgown. Her soft pink hair framed her face with loose curls. Since she hadn’t had a hair cut in close to a year, the pink tresses dipped below her shoulders. She swallowed hard, her green eyes fearful as she limped to Kakashi’s bed.
Kakashi wore his own flannel pajamas under the shuriken printed bed cover. His handsome face, unmasked, the silver haired ninja held the blankets back for her. “It’s alright Sakura. If it doesn’t work out, I can handle you and get you back to the hospital.”
She hesitated next to the bed. “I’m scared, Kakashi. I don’t want to hurt you. And… I’m just scared.” She paused, taking in the full look of his face. She’d only seen him without the mask briefly a couple of times and both times were so she could heal him. He really was a good-looking man.
“I understand. I was tortured once. I know the nightmares… come on in. You’re safe here.” He patted the mattress with his hand in invitation.
Sakura crawled into the bed, instantly set at ease by the warmth of Kakashi’s long body. They’d been in close quarters on so many missions; she’d healed him so many times. His body was achingly familiar though they’d never been intimate at all. Strong arms wrapped around her waist protectively as he spooned around her petite frame.
Kakashi kissed the top of her head chastely as she snuggled against his body, the fruity scent of her shampoo reminding him oddly of Pakun. He whispered comfortingly in her ear, “You’re safe, Sakura. I’m here.”
She succumbed to sleep almost immediately with the exhausted Kakashi drifting off as well.
