Chapter 14. The Call
I need to get her out of here! The mantra rang out in his mind as he tore across the country side. He came to the small cottage situated just outside of the Rain village, not bothering to stop and unlock the door, he just forced his way in. “Get up we need to go!” he yelled, rousing the sleeping figure from the bed.She blinked up at him, “'Tachi what's wrong?”
He had already begun to throw things into a bag, “There's no time to explain, we have to leave now,” he ordered her.
Even her sleep addled mind could pick up on the urgency in his voice, she scrambled to obey him, throwing things helter skelter into her own bag, she quickly pulled on a pair of pants not even bothering to change out of the shirt she had been sleeping in. Once she was ready she followed him out into the pouring rain as they made a hasty retreat, traveling through the night, not stopping to eat or rest, just trying to put as much distance between them as possible. The rain stopped as the sky cleared, it was near dawn before he deemed it safe to stop and rest.
She gathered enough kindling to start a small fire while he set up a perimeter with traps to alert them if something came too close to their camp. They worked in tandem, this was not the first time he had had to change her location, yet each time she hoped it would be the last.
“They found out about me again, didn't they?” she asked barely above a whisper, she knew he would hear her.
Those red eyes connected with the brilliant green of her own, filled with a sadness he never let anyone else see. “Yes,” was his simple answer.
“Where will I go this time?”
“We're going to the sound village, it's the safest place for us right now.” he explained to her.
“The sound village? But isn't that where Orochimaru is? Itachi how do you know he won't turn me over to the Akatsuki or try to kill you?”
He placed his hands on her shoulders, “I need you to trust me on this Kira, it's the only way. I trust him to help us now, he is the only one other than yourself I can trust.”
Her eyes searched his own, she showed no fear as she peered into his Sharigan, “If you say you can trust him I will do as you say.”
He nodded to her, “Good, get some sleep I will keep watch. We will move out in two hours time, not a minute later.”
She settled on the ground as close to the fire as she dared, hoping it would do something to dry the clothes wet from rain. Using her pack as a pillow she closed her eyes, took a deep breath and allowed sleep to take her.
Two hours later, just as he had said, he gently shook her awake. “Time to go Kira.” Without a word she followed behind him. They had two choices from here, they could cut through Fire country, or they could skirt around it taking the long way. Either way would be equally dangerous.
Itachi was a missing-nin from Konoha and had many enemies. She was originally from the village hidden by the waterfall but hadn't been back there since she was a small girl. Outwardly she had no enemies but if they knew what lay dormant inside of her she would be a target for anyone they crossed. She had no formal training but Itachi had taken it upon himself to teach her what he could, with a little help she could stay safe when it was needed. He seemed to be heading in the direction of Fire country, a sure sign of how dire he thought the situation to be. If they passed too close to Konoha they risked the chance of discovery, at the same time it would also be less likely for the Akatsuki to follow them, they themselves wary of conflict with the leaf village before they were sure to have the tactical advantage.
They traveled well after the sun set, until Kira tripped over a tree root, falling to the ground. Itachi stopped and went to her, kneeling at her side, he checked her ankle, “You've twisted it, you will need to rest,” he told her, he dug a tensor bandage and wrapped it around her ankle.
“I'm sorry,” she said softly, “It's not that bad, I can continue, it will heal soon.” She didn't want him to stop on her account, even if she had grown tired.
“You're exhausted, that's why you didn't notice the root. We should have stopped hours ago, you shouldn't keep pushing yourself like this, when you're tired you need to tell me. Kira, we can't let ourselves get to a point where we are too tired to even put up a good defense, you understand.” She nodded, “Good, now get some sleep.”
“But what about you Itachi, you need rest too.”
He sighed, she was right of course he couldn't really expect her to tell him when she needed rest if he refused to do the same. His body ached from pushing on but his mind was still alert, wound too tight to allow for the rest he needed. “Sleep for a couple of hours and I will wake you up to keep watch okay?”
She conceded, though she stilled wanted to push on, the sooner they reached the sound village the better. When morning came they would push on, at this rate they should reach their destination by mid day tomorrow.
Kabuto carried the scroll from Konoha to Orochimaru's office, “Orochimaru-sama, this just arrived from you, a missive from Konoha.”
“Is it from Hikari?” he asked.
“No Orochimaru-sama, it bears the seal of the Hokage.”
Orochimaru took the scroll from Kabuto, breaking the seal he read over the letter, “Kabuto I need you to track down, Uchiha Itachi, his presence it required, try to get him alone, the last thing we need is for the Akatsuki to learn of these plans.”
“Yes Orochimaru-sama, I shall head out straight away. What do you want me to tell him when I find him?”
“Tell him the time had come to return home.”
Kabuto bowed to his master and headed out to find the elder Uchiha. He would take the path through the fire country, it would cut a full day off of his journey, even if it was riskier. Orochimaru had sounded urgent, it was not an instance where time could be wasted. He grabbed the pack he always had prepared, in case of an urgent mission, and set out.
Keeping to the forest, instead of the fields, they would provide some coverage from the elements as well as camouflage from being detected by those who occasionally patrolled the area.
As he traveled high through the trees, he could see smoke from a fire in the distance. Approaching cautiously as to not draw attention to himself he spotted a small blond girl sleeping close to the the fire, using a black cloak adorned with red clouds as a blanket. He stopped briefly debating whether to stop or not. If this girl was a member of the Akatsuki then information on her could prove valuable. However they always traveled in pairs and he didn't see her partner anywhere in sight. Could they have spotted him and be watching him right now. Would they just ignore him if he continued on his way? That was unlikely.
A kunai struck the trunk of the tree he was in, “Show yourself,” a voice from below demanded. It woke the girl up and she jumped to he feet, searching the ground for signs of an intruder before her gaze drifted up. She locked eyes with him.
“I see him,” she announced to her companion. “You might as well join us on the ground or this won't be a very even fight,” she suggested cockily.
Kabuto's eye twitched in anger, what made her believe they were better than he was? He jumped down to the ground coming face to face with her companion, well that would explain it, he thought to himself. He directed his eyes to the ground, even if this was the man he was looking for he didn't want to end up trapped in his genjutsu. “Uchiha Itachi, I was sent to find you.”
“Who wishes me found?” Itachi demanded.
“Orochimaru-sama, he says to tell you the time has come to return home.”
Itachi sighed in relief, “We will follow you come morning, once she has had a chance to rest her injured ankle.”
“May I?” Kabuto asked gesturing towards the injured girl, no woman. On closer inspection he could see she was actually older than he had originally thought, late teens to early twenties would be his guess. Itachi nodded his acceptance and the woman sat on the ground extending her injured ankle towards him. He took it in his hands, lightly inspecting it, taking note of her wince as he did. “It's just a sprain, I can heal it.” a moment later he stood, his work done. “If you follow me we can reach the sound village in just a few hours.”
They followed him, “Who are you?”she asked.
“I am Yakushi Kabuto.”
“Orochimaru's right hand man?" the woman pressed for clarification.
“Yes, he was the one to send me to look for you Itachi. Who is this you travel with?” he inquired of the woman.
“Her name is Kira, she is under my protection. If any harm comes to her...”
Kabuto cut him off, “It won't, your assistance is needed, and nothing will happen to jeopardize your compliance in this matter.”
“What matter is this you speak of?” Kira asked.
“I do not have all the details, Orochimaru-sama will explain when we get there.”
Orochimaru was surprised to see Kabuto return so quickly with the Uchiha and another in tow. “That was fast,” he remarked.
“We were already on our way here,” Itachi explained, “we seek asylum from the Akatsuki.”
“Asylum, what has happened and who is the girl?”
“If you could allow us a safe place to rest I would be more than happy to tell you.”
Orochimaru nodded, “Kabuto show them to a room please, then escort Itachi to my office so we may have privacy as we speak. Is there anything else you require?”
Kira stomach chose that time to make it's demands heard, Itachi smirked, “perhaps some food.”
“I will see that it is done, I will await your presence.”
Kabuto led them to a room, “Take your time to get cleaned up, I will come to retrieve you in an hours time.”
Kira waited until Kabuto's footsteps receded before she spoke, “Itachi, what's going on?”
“I'm not sure, but we will find out soon. For now I can only speculate that persons with power in Konoha have learned the truth of my deeds there. Beyond that I don't know.” He hated lying to her.
“How long will you be leaving me for this time?” she whispered, though she was afraid of the answer, she didn't like it when he had to leave, he made her feel safe, and when he was gone she worried for him. He was strong, powerful and capable of caring for himself but she still worried.
“I hadn't intended on leaving you at all, but now, I need to know what they want of me first.”
Kira looked at him confused as she took his hand, “What do you mean? You're keeping something from me, what is it?”
He smirked at her, she was the only one that could read him like an open book, she always viewed his stoic expression and looked past it, into his eyes, into his soul. "Kisame was growing suspicious, he had shared his thoughts with others, it wouldn't have been much longer before they figured out that I was the one tipping you off."
"I'm sorry I've caused you so much trouble."
"Don't think about that, you're safe and not in their hands, you will never fall into their hands if I have anything to say about it." He grabbed her face, forcing her to keep eye contact with him, "I've told you, I need you to trust me to keep you safe."
"I do trust you Itachi, but I don't want you to be hurt either, not because of me."
"Trust in my strength to keep is both safe." She nodded. There was a knock on the door, someone had brought food. "Eat while I get cleaned up.” He placed a kiss on her forehead with a tenderness she once never thought possible from him.
Her heart ached for him when she watched him leave with Kabuto after. When they had first met he had been hard and cold, he had made sure she knew that traveling with him was a temporary thing. He insisted she learn chakra control and he taught her both Taijustu and Ninjutsu so that she would know how to defend herself when he was gone. Yet she remained at his side, year after year, slowly he began to care for her and she for him, still that darkness always hung over him. He no longed for death no more, at least she hoped he didn't, he had always told her that if he returned to his home it would be to face his death. She couldn't lose him not now.
Itachi entered Orochimaru's office, he took the seat offered to him, “What is this about?”
“The Hokage, she wishes to bring about the end of Danzo, and she wants you to do it,” Orochimaru put it bluntly. “She wants you to return, to your place in Konoha.”
“What of Sasuke? What does he know?”
“He is being kept in the dark, Tsunade feels that if certain people are present when attack occurs they could be used as hostages. Sasuke, as well as a few select others will be sent out of the village under false pretenses.”
“That's not what I meant, and you know it,” Itachi snapped, “Does he know the truth?”
Orochimaru frowned, “Not at this time, Itachi, I really think you should reconsider, I'm not the only one, he deserves to know the real reason for what happened, you owe him that.”
“I owe him the revenge he seeks.”
“You owe him the choice. What of the girl with you, does she know what you plan to do?”
“She knows ours was only a temporary arrangement, she accepted that.”
“A lot can change in nine years.”
“I made my choice long ago, he will not know. I will go to Konoha, I will destroy that man, once I know he is gone, I will face Sasuke and I will be able to rest easy. When do they want me in position.”
Orochimaru sighed, “you will have a few days rest at the very least, we weren't expecting to find you so soon. It will take a couple of days for word to reach Konoha then a few more for them to plan and send a missive back. If you truly wish to go through with this I suggest you spend that time with the girl preparing her for what is to come.”
“I have one request of you, one only you can grant.”
“If it is within my power I will see it done, it is the least I can do to thank you for your sacrifice.”
“Keep her here, make her a part of your village, keep her safe and out of their hands.” He watched Orochimaru nod his ascent. “Thank you, when you receive more information I trust you will find me.” He got up and returned to his room, he took a deep breath before entering in an attempt to still his hands he had just noticed were shaking. He found her curled up asleep. She stirred when he sat on the edge of bed beside her.
“'Tachi,” she reached up to caress his face. He covered her hand with his own stilling her movements, as he looked at her with sadness in his eyes. “You're going back aren't you, to your village?” Unable to lie to her, he closed his eyes, he couldn't stomach the hurt he would see there. “You won't be coming back will you?” He gave a small shake of his head.
“You'll be safe here, Orochimaru will watch out for you,” he said softly. He felt her shift on the bed. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she slid onto his lap. She kissed his neck before moving to his lips. He allowed himself to get lost in the kiss, drawing her closer to him.
She reached between them slowly undoing the fastens of his shirt easing it off his shoulders, exposing his chest. She ran her fingers across his firm muscles, running her nails down his side sending shivers down his spine. She felt his fingers play with the hem of her shirt, she pulled it over her head taking the bindings that held her breasts with it. He withdrew from her lips only to bow his head to take a nipple into to his mouth as she turned to straddle his hips. He sucked and bit down just enough to have her arch against him yearning for more, she threw her head back in ecstasy. He ran his blunt nails down her back as he moved on to take the other nipple between his teeth, she ground against his hard cock, begging for more. He couldn't, wouldn't deny her this, he turned sharply, throwing her to the bed. He crawled up her body lavishing it with kisses, biting at her neck, marring her perfect skin with his marks. He reached down into his pocket where he always kept spare binding in case of injury.
He met her eyes, “trust me?”
“Always,” she offered herself up to him as he expertly bound her hands to the bed, fixing the remainder over her eyes.
“Don't move,” he reminded her, at her nod he kissed his way back down her body, pausing to dip his tongue into her navel, a promise of things to come. He ripped her pants and underwear off with one swift movement leaving her naked before him. Placing his head between her legs, moving in for a taste. She gasped, clutching at the bindings around her wrists, but keeping her hips in place. He circled that small bundle of nerves before sucking it into his mouth, taking a hand he placed it at her entrance, he inserted two fingers, setting a slow agonizing pace as he thrust into her. He continued his ministrations on that small nub, occasionally dipping his tongue between her folds to join his fingers inside of her. His other hand reaching up her body to squeeze and pinch her breasts. Her breath came in soft quick pants as she was driven to the edge, he abandoned her breasts to pull himself free from the confines of his pants. He stroked himself, wanting nothing more than bury himself deep inside of her, but not yet. She was holding back, he felt muscles twitching against his fingers, “Cum for me he whispered against her, it came as a wave, rushing to meet his mouth as he drank her dry. He continued to thrust into her, bringing her back around until she was gasping for him again.
“'Tachi please,” she panted, pleading for more, needing him inside of her. He moved up to her lips, kissing her so she could taste herself on his breath.
“Soon, love, soon,” he spoke softly to her, peppering her face with kisses before returning to her lips. He positioned himself between legs, pressing just his tip into her teasingly, enjoying her struggle to remain still and not thrust up to meet him. He plunged into her forcing a cry from lungs, already burning from her past orgasm. “Move with me,” he commanded, and she did matching him thrust for thrust. Bringing him to the brink, “Cum with me.” They tumbled over the edge together.
He cut her ties, and took in her beauty, hair spread like a halo around her, her face flushed as she panted to catch her breath, her forehead shone with a light sheen of sweat. He removed her blindfold allowing her to see again.
She gazed into his his eyes, filled with all the things he would never say. All the secrets and fear never to be spoken. “I understand, I trust you always, always.” Held her tight to his chest, it was not long before sleep claimed her.
It would not be long now, before he left her, before the end would come, but he would hold onto her while he could. And when the end came his last thought would be of her.
He spent his days preparing himself for the battle ahead, reviewing everything Orochimaru had collected in his experiments on the Sharingan, the procedures he preformed on Danzo and the results. She was always close by refusing to leave his side, often scribbling madly in the sketch book she always had close at hand.
The nights were all for her, he took her each night, bringing her to new levels of pleasure every time, until her voice was hoarse and her muscles ached. Always the the same words whispered at the end, “I understand, I trust you always.”
Then the day had come when he had to leave, “Kira, I...”
She wrapped her arms around him, silencing him with her lips, “No need to say goodbye, I understand, I will trust you always.” She left him standing there as she walked away, unable to see the look of resignation in his eyes and refusing to let him see the look of hurt in hers.
It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back when you call me
No need to say goodbye
Just because everything's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
All you can do is try to know who your friends are
As you head off to the war
Pick a star on the dark horizon and follow the light
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes
You'll come back when they call you
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when they call you
No need to say goodbye
Less than a day later Kira was sitting outside on the steps of Orochimaru's residence, sketching Itachi from memory, when the commotion occurred. Kabuto had come bursting into the village followed closely by two other young men, one carried a young woman in his arms covered in blood, the other looked about urgently with his red eyes, so similar to Itachi's.
“Where's Orochimaru?” the red eyed man demanded, “He's needed urgently tell him something happened to Hikari.”
Kira jumped up from her spot on the stairs, sending her sketch book falling to the ground, she hurried inside to the find the man who had taken her in.
