“She’s out of the woods now,” Sakura said to Gaara, as she stepped out of Hinata’s hospital room. The pinkette had been sent earlier that week to help out during the Jounin exam and Gaara was grateful she was there. “She suffered from chakra exhaustion and fatigue but she can have visitors one at a time. Just don’t make it too long. She needs to rest.”
With that the young medic left to tend to other patients.
With a sigh of relief, Gaara went in to see Hinata.
The Hyuuga was awake, her face brightening when she spied the redhead.
“Gaara!” she cried. “I guess you heard?”
Gaara nodded. “Sakura told me everything.”
“Well,” she said, rubbing her stomach. “I did put a lot of strain on my body and I guess I didn’t pass the Jounin exam but I’m glad Sakura was able to save the baby.”
Gaara froze. The baby?!
“You’re pregnant?”
Hinata paled. “Sakrua didn’t tell you?”
“Is it – I mean who…”
“I’ve only ever been with you,” she answered his unasked question.
The magnitude of the news seemed to hit Gaara all at once. He felt numb inside, detached from the whole affair.
“Get rid of it.”
“What?” Hinata was shocked. Of course she hadn’t really expected him to take the news lightly but somehow she had banked on him being at least a little accepting. “What do you mean? I can’t – I won’t do that!”
Gaara shook his head, trying to make her see reason. “You have to. I can’t lose you, I don’t think I can –“
“Gaara?!” she said in a panic. “Lose me? I’m not going anywhere –“
“NO!” he rushed over and gripped her shoulders.
Hinata winched in pain.
“I lost my mother. I won’t lose you!”
And that is when Hinata realised what he meant. She’d heard his mother had died in childbirth. Complications had arisen and it had evidently left a scar in Gaara’s life.
“You are not going to lose me,” Hinata said softly. She took Gaara’s hands in hers. “This baby is ours. Yours and mine and we will be a family. I-if you want us to be…”
Before Gaara could answer a familiar voice rang out.
“Hinata chan!” Naruto cried before bursting through the door.
“N-Naruto kun?!” Hinata was startled as the blond came bounding in, followed by a whole host of people – in fact it looked like everyone she knew. Neji had followed closely behind Naruto and even Kurenai sensei was there, her son in her arms.
“What’s going on?” Gaara managed to say what the Hyuuga was thinking.
“Ah! Gaara!” Naruto cried jubilantly. “Of course we all came to support Hinata’s decision!”
Neji rolled his eyes. “Naruto, you didn’t explain anything at all. We came because we heard of Hinata sama’s decision to leave the Hyuuga clan and Konoha. I am guessing this is because of you, Kazekage sama?”
“Leaving the Hyuuga clan and Konoha…” More news Gaara was not able to handle.
“Not likely!” another party suddenly chipped in from outside the room.
The crowd parted as Hyuuga Hiashi entered, followed by the Hyuuga elders.
“She is coming home with me!”
“You can’t just make her do whatever you want!” Naruto chimed in.
“That’s right!” Kiba cried, Akamaru barking in agreement.
“It is fact, that Hinata chan has renounced claim to the succession of the Hyuuga clan,” Shino said calmly.
“It doesn’t matter. She is my daughter and she will be coming back to Konoha with me.”
And then suddenly everyone was talking at once.
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!” Sakura’s angry voice cut through the din, forcing everyone into silence. She stormed in, pushing people aside as if they were nothing more than flimsy pieces of fabric.
“Sakura chan! We are supporting the spring of youth,” Rock Lee cried, unaware of just how tense the atmosphere was.
Red faced, Sakura said through gritted teeth, “My patient is supposed to be resting. You lot get out!” she pointed to the Hinata fanclub.
“Now Sakura chan…” Naruto started but instantly backed off when Sakura held up a chakra infused fist. “Uh, sorry Hinata chan, we’ll be going now,” Naruto muttered, rightly choosing self-preservation over his loyalty to his friend.
Hinata could hardly blame him; she would not have wanted to be on the receiving end of Sakura’s wrath. She had heard some very unpleasant stories involving the pinkette’s strength.
Once everyone was gone except Gaara, Hinata, her father, the elders and Sakura, the medic closed the door behind them to start a private conversation.
“Hiashi sama, Elders, I believe this is not the right time for this conversation,” she said, trying to defused the situation.
Hiashi was to have none of it. “There is no conversation to be had. My daughter is coming home with me right now.”
“Hiashi, maybe we could do this when she’s recovered a bit more…” Elder A said.
“No –“
“I’m not coming home, Father. I’m staying in Suna if- if the Kazekage would have me…” She glanced over at Gaara for the first time since people started bursting into the room.
His expression was impassive as always but he said, “Sunagakure would welcome the Hyuuga heiress.”
“You stay out of this!” Growled Hiashi. “How dare you corrupt my precious daughter –“
“Hiashi! Get a hold of yourself before you cause an incident!” Elder B interrupted.
“Kazekage sama, is what you say true?” Sakura took the moment to talk.
“If it is Hinata’s wish…”
Sakura grinned. “I’m glad you said that. In fact I had just been about to come in here to make a proposal to you in regard to that.”
“You can’t just –“
“This comes from Tsunade shishou, Hiashi sama,” Sakura warned and Hiashi clamped his mouth shut. “To strengthen our relationship with Sunagakure, since Hinata is willing to move here anyway, Tsunade shishou proposes marriage of the former heiress to a Suna shinobi of note.”
“What?!”
“I have to agree with Hiashi on this one,” said Elder A. “Even if she is the Hokage and even if Hinata is no longer the heiress, surely there are better designs for her then to send her off with some Suna shinobi. She has pure blood after all…”
“Not even if the candidate was the Kazekage himself?” Sakura raised an eyebrow. Her gaze had been on Gaara the whole time.
Now everyone was looking at Gaara, however his gaze had shifted to Hinata who stared back at him.
“If Hinata…”
“YES!” Hinata couldn’t get the word out fast enough.
“NOOOO!!!”
“I will make preperations…” said Elder B.
“YOU WILL NOT!”
“I understand, but Hinata is in my care at the moment and I can not allow these preperations until she is deemed fit. As it stands right now she has a condition that will keep her in hospital for a year at least.”
“What condition?” Elder A demanded.
“WHO CARES. SHE’S NOT GOING TO –“
“Hiashi sama!” Both Elders and Sakura said in unison.
“It is done, Hiashi sama,” Sakura continued. “If you have cause for concern, you will need to talk to Tsunade shishou directly.”
Glowering, Hiashi stalked out of the room, muttering something that sounded like, “This is not over!” and Hinata could not help but feel sorry for the Hokage who was about to get a dressing down from her father. It lasted for only a moment before she remembered she had more pressing issues to think about.
“It’s not a condition I am able to discuss with anyone but my patient. Do not worry, as I have said she will be under my care. I will be staying in Sunagakure under Tsunade’s orders until Hinata is well again.”
“To have Hinata in the care of Suna –“
“She will be in my care. Or is it that you do not trust Tsunade and myself, Elders?”
“It is as you say,” Elder B said. Then they both bowed and left.
“Sakura chan… Thank you,” Hinata said once the Elders were gone.
“I don’t understand,” Gaara said.
“The preperations my Elders were speaking of was to seal my Byakugan on the event of my death so that it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands,” Hinata explained.
“I can not change Hinata’s fate,” Sakura said. “But if we are careful and they don’t find out about it, your child may be saved from the same fate.”
Hinata rubbed her belly protectively.
“Right now, Tsunade shishou is drafting up a contract to be signed by all parties involved regarding your marriage. It will hold a clause regarding the release of any children you may have from the obligations passed down by the Hyuuga clan. I am sure the Hyuuga Elders and Hiashi sama will be more than compliant with signing them since they probably have plans to render you barren during the process of sealing your Byakugan.”
“My child!” Gaara suddenly said, worried.
Hinata tried not smile. Just a few minutes ago, Gaara had been talking about getting rid of it and now he was worried for it.
“At this moment the only people who know about your child are those present in this room. Until the child is delivered I would propose we keep it that way.”
“Fine.”
“Agreed,” Hinata nodded.
“This means you will not be able to leave this room for the duration of your pregnancy Hinata. I will be telling everyone you have a disease that is disfiguring (not entirely untrue) and that no one but Gaara or myself will be allowed to enter on pain of death. As you are now the Kazekage’s fiancée I’m sure no one would dare break that edict.”
It would be a challenge but Hinata knew if it worked her child would be free. Sakura went on to say that the child will have to be registered as Gaara’s child alone until they are married and after the ceremony to seal Hinata’s Byakugan was done and the contract finalised on Konoha’s end. Once they are registered as a married couple Hinata would officially be a shinobi of Sunagakure and she will then need to apply to adopt her own child back as a legal guardian.
After she was finished Sakura frowned. “You look exhausted Hinata. You really need to rest to conserve your strength for your child. I will allow another five minutes and then you should get some sleep.” She gave Gaara a significant look before exiting.
“Um…” Hinata started. It felt like a lifetime ago since they were alone together. So much had happened in such a short span of time. She suddenly felt shy. Even though she was elated that all her dreams seemed to be coming true at once she wasn’t sure how Gaara was taking all this. She wanted to tell him that she knew it was sudden and if he wanted to back out he could but she just couldn’t bring herself to say the words. As it turned out, she needn’t have worried.
“Hinata, I know this is all a bit forced but I love you and maybe it is a little soon to be thinking marriage but I would not have it any other way. So I am asking you now, just one man to the woman he loves, will you marry me?”
For a second Hinata couldn’t believe her ears. Tears appeared in her eyes.
How did I get so lucky? she wondered.
“Yes…” she finally said. “Yes I will marry you.”

Wow! Really sorry it took so long for me to get this out there. To be honest I’ve been quite lazy! This has been mulling around my brain for so long it’s almost taken up permanent residence in there. I’ve just been too preoccupied with other things to have typed it up until now - can you believe I typed it all up in one sitting?
At any rate hope you all enjoy this instalment! All that’s left now is the epilogue which I will post as soon as I can get it written up!
If you liked the story please rate and review it. I’d love to hear from you all ^_^
