It took longer than they would have liked for Maiko to settle her baggage, but she finally managed it. They didn't get on the road until mid-morning, but the roads were clear, so they still managed to make it half way to Degarashi Port. They set up camp quickly, set their watches and settled in.
Sakura was getting antsy. Not so much about not being with Kakashi, though she did miss him and she really… missed him. No, it was something else.
The closer they got to Port City, the more something bugged her. She had no idea what, but she felt something nagging at her. With no answers, she tried her best to shrug it off, but when she woke Kakashi to relieve her and she curled up to sleep, it was filled with odd dreams that she couldn't remember come morning.
As they pulled into Degarashi Port, Sakura looked around with interest. It didn't look much like it did when she'd been there before, but she reminded herself again that it had been a long time. Two things she did notice was that it looked cleaner and the people seemed much happier.
She remembered enough that it was the Wasabi family that they had helped - a friend of Tsunade's. And they had regained control of the Port after the race that she'd helped with. She was glad to see that they put their power to good use.
There was a full-fledged hotel just off the beach in town. Sakura had to fight all-out giddiness when she got her own room key. She took her time in the shower, washing what felt like days of dirt off of her. She was also thrilled to find out she could send her clothes down to the hotel laundry.
When she came out of the shower, she was surprised by a knock on the door. Puzzled, she looked through the peep-hole to see Kakashi on the other side. She opened the door and stepped back. "Hello."
She stared for a full minute. He had two paper bags in his hands. He chuckled. "I thought you might like to stay in tonight."
She nearly bowled him over. "Oof!" He braced himself, glad she hadn't put any chakra behind it. "Do you think we could do this inside? Especially since you're still naked?"
She glanced down to see her towel had fallen. Blushing bright red, she snatched it up and darted back into the room. She cleared her throat.
But then the door was shut and locked and they couldn't wait anymore. The food sat forgotten on the table as Sakura yanked down his mask and their lips crashed together. She pulled at zippers, yanked at buttons and nearly tore his gloves in her hurry to feel his skin against hers.
When they broke apart briefly, he stared down into her eyes. "It's only been two days." But he started nibbling his way down her neck, taking a nipple into his mouth and doing his damnedest to make her insane. He, too, was just as anxious, just as crazy to feel her.
"I don't care. God, Kakashi, I missed you…" Kakashi lifted her and pinned her against the wall, sliding into her in one quick thrust.
She wrapped her legs around him and nearly screamed at the feelings rioting through her. Her first orgasm slammed into her and she had to bite his shoulder to keep from letting the entire hotel know what was happening. "More. Harder. Now."
And that was all it took. He held on just long enough to feel her ripple around him one more time before he let go. He buried his face in her neck to muffle the shout.
As their breathing calmed, Kakashi looked up. "Good grief. We're still at the door."
"Wow. Ahem." She buried her face in his neck to hide her embarrassment.
"Hey." He tilted her face up, then carefully lowered her to the floor. He kissed her face gently, cheeks, forehead. "I should have at least gotten us a bit further into the room." He shook his head.
Their kisses turned soft, almost heartbreakingly so. When they paused, however, Sakura's stomach rumbled. Kakashi chuckled. "Well, that answers that."
They settled together on the bed with their food, feeding each other, chatting and laughing. Somewhere along the line, the food was set aside and forgotten again as they lost themselves in each other.
Later that night, Kakashi lay wide awake, staring at the ceiling. Sakura was draped over him, sound asleep. Two days apart. That's all it had been. And not even fully apart. They'd spent time together during the day, in the evenings. They just hadn't slept together. Yet the only thing he could think of after checking in was getting to her.
He didn't know if he believed in 'hell,' per se, but he was pretty sure there was a special one for him. It was the same one reserved for people who talked in movie theaters. He couldn't stay away from her. No matter how hard he tried. And he'd been trying for a while.
He sighed and let his mind go back.
Two months ago.
He'd managed to wait a month. He'd seen her in the streets, at the hospital, the ninja bar. They'd passed each other in Hokage Tower, the jonin facility. But he hadn't touched her. Hadn't gone to her apartment.
But he'd certainly thought about it. Fought himself over it. He'd found himself on the roof opposite her apartment a few times before he really realized what he was doing. Calling himself all manner of names, he'd taken himself off home.
Until tonight. He watched the shadow of her move around in her bedroom as she got ready for bed. He'd seen her undress, seen her pull something on, then pick up a few things off the floor. A few minutes later, the lights when out.
And as he sat there, she came to the window, raised the blind and opened it. She paused there, looking through it, first one direction then the other before sighing and turning back into her room. Was she looking for something? Him?
No. He didn't believe it, couldn't believe it. That was ridiculous. But her window stayed opened, the sheer curtains blowing in the late June breeze.
My window's always open, even if my door isn't.
She couldn't have really meant it. Not like this. Not for this, what he'd been thinking about. What he'd been unable to not think about for the last month. Okay, seven months.
He reminded himself this was impossible. Forbidden, remember? Illegal. The rules hadn't stated, exactly, what would happen if they were caught, but he could well imagine. And he didn't want to contemplate that too closely.
He lay there on the roof, the arguments playing over and over in his head like a broken record. But when the moon was directly overhead, and she came back to the window and looked out, he knew he'd lost.
He leapt lightly across to her roof. Gathering his courage, he slipped over the edge and, with chakra-infused feet, perched for just a moment on the tiny sill below the window itself. Then, damning himself again, he slipped through the window.
He'd awakened early again. And like the time before, he'd slipped out. But this time, half way home, he stopped. What was he doing to her? She wasn't the same women he'd been dating before. She wasn't just someone to pick up in a bar.
He turned around and headed back. But when he made it to her roof and was about to slip over, he stopped. She was crying. He stayed there another moment, then as quietly as he'd come, he headed home. It seemed that she regretted it as much as he did.
Kakashi looked down at her sleeping face now and wondered if he'd been right all that time. After that night, he'd managed to stay away for two weeks. But just like the time before that, he couldn't stay away for long and then he was back. Two weeks after that, he was there again. Then it was a week. And then he'd just given in. He wouldn't admit it. He fought it every night, but he couldn't stay away.
And then they'd been sent out. He had no idea what was going to happen to them when they got back to the Leaf. He didn't think she could go back to the way things had been. He didn't think she could slip back into that.
And if he'd allowed himself to think about it, to admit the truth to himself, he didn't think he could, either.
As much as they wanted to make it all the way to Port City the next night, it was impossible. The road wound horribly as it got closer to the point, turning back in on itself several times. There were no more inns or villages, per se, either. They'd be camping and probably for at least two nights.
Sakura went in search of another mat or something she could use for Maiko to camp on, so it wouldn't be an issue anymore. She was still frustrated by her insistence that she wasn't sick, but she couldn't very well force the issue.
"Well, hello." Sakura turned around.
"Idate?! Hi!" She walked over to him. "How are you?"
"I'm quite good, thank you. And you?" He smiled at her and Sakura had the feeling he was looking her…over.
She blushed. "Good, thank you. I'm apprenticed to the Hokage now."
"No, really? Way to go." He grinned. "How's Naruto?"
She grinned. "As annoying as ever. He just got married." Sakura noticed he'd filled out some since she'd seen him last. He also looked a little taller.
"HIM? He's MARRIED?" He started laughing.
"It's true. There's a Hyuuga girl in our village who's had her eye on him for years, though he was a complete blockhead about it."
"No, Naruto?" He snickered.
"Right. But they're married now." Sakura shook her head. "What about you? What are you up to?"
"Boss Jirocho has put me in charge of Degarashi Port." She couldn't have missed the way he stood a little taller at that.
"That's great." They fell into an uncomfortable silence a moment.
"So, um, how's Sasuke?"
Sakura paused and had to swallow the lump that had formed. "Sasuke…is dead. I'm sure word of the last Great War made it down here." When he nodded, she continued, "he'd taken sides against the Leaf. It's a long story, but the end result is that he died during the war. He'd redeemed himself in the end, turning back to help us, but…" she trailed off and had to forcibly put herself back together.
"I'm so sorry. I…had no idea."
She shook her head. "It's okay. It's been a while, but it's still hard."
"I can believe it. Well, I'm glad to see you. How long are you in Degarashi?"
She gave herself another few seconds, then smiled. "Actually, we're leaving this morning. I'm on a mission with my former sensei - Kakashi. He wasn't with us back then, he'd had other things that they he had to do. We're escorting the bride of the daimyo's son."
"Well, I'm sorry to hear it. If you come through this way on your way back, please stop. I have the house that was Boss Jirocho's."
"I will. Take care, Idate. I'm glad to see things going well for you."
"Thank you. You too!" He waved.
Sakura found what she was looking for a little while later and was grateful to get back on the road. She hadn't wanted to think about Sasuke. It reminded her too much of the night she'd begged him to take her with him. It reminded her too much of why she hadn't told Kakashi yet how she felt.
She tried to shut the thoughts out and concentrated on running. It was going to be a long day.
