Hinata was being ridiculous. There were a very very limited number of places they could go. Hinata stared into her closet, willing something appropriate to float off of the hanger. She sighed. Obviously, her closet wasn’t going to cooperate. She settled on the only skirt she owned and a blouse to go with it.
When she went to her dresser to pull out her underthings, her eye caught the blue lace nothings that Hanabi had given her for her birthday. She blushed, but grabbed them quickly before she could change her mind. She dressed, then spent a solid half an hour staring at herself in the mirror, trying to figure out what to do with her hair.
Get a grip on yourself. This is Neji. It’s not like he’s going to run away if you don’t look perfect.
Hinata forcibly shoved her inner self to the side and pulled her hair up into a twist and secured it with hair sticks. She found some small and simple earrings and was ready way too early. She sighed as she looked at the clock. Only six-thirty. She wore a path through the floor. This was crazy. She was less nervous about being the leader of her clan than she was about going on a…she gulped…date with Neji. Yes, this was their first official date.
She felt a hysterical little giggle build up in her throat when there was a knock on the door. She forced herself not to run across the room to open the door. She took a deep breath, then twisted the knob. And then he was there and all the craziness faded as she looked into the face of the man she loved.
* * *
She took his breath away. She wore a blue shirt of some sort. He probably could have described it if he had any brain cells available. He managed to notice the long skirt that whispered around her ankles and showed off her feet.
He shook his head as if waking up and pulled the flowers out from behind his back. They were daises. Ino had said they were her favorite flower. He’d kicked himself for half an hour for not knowing that. But the truth was, there were still some things he wasn’t going to know. He’d had no reason to find out her favorite flower before – except the reason of wasting time. No more.
Her face lit up in genuine pleasure as she took the flowers from him. “Let me put them in water. They’re beautiful.” She turned away from the door and walked over to the small kitchen area. He noticed she’d twisted her hair up and he itched to put his lips to the back of her neck where it was bare.
Then she was done and walking back to him. He leaned down and picked up the basket he’d left on the ground. “I hope you don’t mind a picnic. There aren’t many places to go eat yet. Ichiraku’s the only one open and, well…” He let it trail off. Despite how good the ramen was, it was still ‘Naruto’s place’ in his head and he didn’t want to bring the blonde into their evening.
If it was possible for her to smile wider, she did. “That would be wonderful.” She said. She stepped into her sandals by the door, and they headed down the hill.
He’d picked a spot out of the way, at the top of her favorite hill overlooking the rebuilding and the temporary village. He spread the blanket out for her and they sat. He took the simple meal of rice balls and vegetables out of the basket, along with a small thermos of tea and cups.
Hinata spread her skirt over her legs and took the food that Neji had given her. This was the best possible thing he could have done. She didn’t really want to go to Ichiraku’s stand. As much as she liked the ramen, she didn’t want to bring Naruto on their date and it would, despite their best efforts.
The food was delicious. He blushed a little as he explained where he got it. “I paid one of the ladies at the main house to help me. I’m afraid that, for all the different forms of Gentle Fist I know, I’m hopeless in a kitchen.” Hinata laughed delightedly.
They ate in silence for a bit, each enjoying the simple meal of rice and vegetables. Hinata broached the subject of the fight with Hanabi. “I’m going to have to be extremely careful. I do not want to hurt her more than I need to. Not that she can’t take care of herself, but unless I want her to end up in the hospital for who knows how long…” She winced as she realized what she’d said. The last thing she wanted to remind Neji of was the last time she’d been in the hospital after being on the receiving end of a Gentle Fist fight.
Either he hid it well, or he’d gotten past it. She sincerely hoped it was the latter. “I can help, if you’d like. We can all work together to find the best combination of attacks and defenses. We’ll make it look like you really are willing to kill each other.” He chuckled a bit. “It’s a good thing you don’t really want to.”
Hinata laughed. “Yes, it is. I think I can speak for Hanabi and myself when I say that we would very much appreciate that.” She blushed a bit then decided if she was in for a penny… “Neji?”
Neji smiled. “Yes?”
“I’ve….gotten used to having you around so much. I…” she took a shaky breath. “I hated being apart from you for even a short time today.” She stared hard at the flowered pattern on the blanket. The colors started to blend together when she saw Neji’s hand reach under her chin.
He lifted her face to meet his gaze. “I did, too.” He said quietly. He leaned over and kissed her softly on the lips. She responded more fervently than she had intended. He chuckled. “We don’t have to, you know.” She’d lost her train of thought. She looked at him with a puzzled expression. “Be apart. It’s no hardship to be with you.”
She beamed a smile at him and put her arms around his neck. He hugged her to him and kissed her ear, her neck and then her shoulder before forcibly stopping himself. “I promised myself we would do more than that.” His voice was rough.
She sighed and sat back. “I’m sorry.”
He looked at her as if she’d lost her mind. “You’re sorry??” He shook his head at her. “I’m sorry!”
“Well, I did sort of throw myself at you there.”
Neji snickered. “Yes, I guess you did.” He wagged a finger at her. “Bad, Hinata!”
She laughed and he tackled her, tickling her until she begged for mercy. “Please! Uncle! I give!!” He let her up to catch her breath. Turning, he pulled his shogi board and pieces out of the basket.
“Would you like to?” He smiled.
“Oh yes! That would be fun.” She sat up eagerly, straightening her clothes. She poured a bit more tea for them while Neji set up the board.
Time got lost and before they knew it, they’d been playing for almost two hours, discussing strategies for her fight with Hanabi and the best ways to deal with the elders. Hinata wanted the night to last forever. “This has been the most wonderful night of my life.” She smiled up at Neji.
His grin was huge. “Mine, too.” He leaned in and kissed her lightly. “I don’t want it to end.” He took a deep breath and turned, once more to the basket. He took out a small bowl. He pulled the cover off and picked up one of the brown squares. “Chocolate?”
She smiled shyly and reached out to take it, but Neji ignored her hand and held the square of sweet up to her lips. Her eyes widened, but she opened her mouth and he placed the chocolate on her tongue. She caught his finger when he went to pull his hand away and sucked on it a bit, licking the tiny bit of chocolate that was on the tip.
Neji stared at her mouth and couldn’t seem to remember his name. He had to swallow twice before any sound came out. “Hinata…”
She managed to make the chocolate go down her throat, but yet again, couldn’t take a breath. “How do you do that to me?” She said
“What?”
“Make it hard to just draw some air.” She put her hand on her chest and felt her heart beating like crazy.
“Hmmm. I don’t know. When you figure it out, let me know. I can’t seem to, either.” And he leaned in again, pulling her up against him and this time he kissed her thoroughly.
“Neji.” She moaned quietly against his mouth. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back. The broke apart, gasping.
“Good grief, we’re practically in public and I can’t keep my hands off of you.” He leaned his head on her shoulder as he concentrated on taking in one breath and another.
She blushed this time, at the desperation she heard in his voice. “We could…” she had to swallow to make her voice work. “We could go back to the house…”
He looked intently into her eyes. “I’d like that.” The packed the picnic quickly and almost ran back to the house. They stopped in front of her door. “Are you sure about this? You know that the trees and walls have eyes around here.”
“Of course. I don’t care. I love you.” He opened the door and surprised her by picking her up and carrying her into the house. Just inside the door, he pushed her back against it and started kissing her again.
Pinning her hands above her head, he created a trail of fire as his lips moved down the side of her face, her neck and down to the edge of her shirt. She moaned as the pleasure started building and he pulled her shirt up over her head. He stopped breathing altogether when he saw the scraps of blue lace over her breasts.
He cupped one with his hand and teased the other nipple through the lace, with his tongue. Hinata wasn’t sure how her skirt came off, but she was naked except for the tiny excuse for panties and bra. Neji kissed her once more, thoroughly, before dropping to his knees in front of her. He lifted one leg, put it over his shoulder, pulled the bit of lace aside and buried his tongue into her sex.
Hinata’s hands flew to his head and she couldn’t help writhing against his face as he licked her sensitive bud. He pulled on it with his lips, sucking the pleasure out of her. She moaned his name and then she was coming while Neji lapped up her juices.
She pulled him up to her and tore at his clothes. She heard something rip when his shirt came off, but she didn’t care. Then he was naked in front of her, and it was her turn. She pushed him up against the door and kissed and licked her way down his body.
On her knees in front of him, she tasted his sex for the first time. She licked at the bit of salty liquid that came out and experimented by tracing circles around the tip with her tongue. She kissed her way to the base of him before again using her tongue. She heard Neji’s uneven breathing and took it as a sign that she was doing the right thing. She glanced up at him and took him into her mouth.
“HINATA!” He gritted his teeth, his hands on her head. She slowly moved until she took all that she could into her mouth. Bracing herself with her hand around the rest, she continued to suckle on him, using her tongue, her lips in any way she could to bring him pleasure.
Within only a few minutes, however, he pulled her away from him and laid her down on the floor. He entered her in one swift movement, kissing her face, ears, neck. She moaned and wrapped her legs around him, pulling him further into her. She scratched his back in her attempts to show him what she needed. “Harder. Neji.” And then she was shuddering as the climax took over her. She vaguely heard him shout as he emptied himself into her.
“Good grief. We didn’t even make it a full meter inside the house.” His words were muffled against her neck. Hinata chuckled against his shoulder. “That won’t do,” he said and carefully pulled himself up. He picked her up and carried her to the bed.
He laid her down gently, then stretched out beside her. He cleared his throat. “I think I ruined your…um…underthings.”
Hinata stifled a giggle. “Only the panties. I don’t think they were intended to withstand much. That’s okay, though. I think your shirt got ripped.” Neji laughed and glanced at the clothes strewn around the front door. “Doesn’t matter. I have more.”
Neji leaned over to inspect the bra more closely. “Hmmm. How does this work?” He puzzled over it, but gave up when he could find no easy way to take it off.
Hinata leaned up and twisted her arm around to unhook the bra. “Like that.” She slid the straps over her shoulders, pulled it off and dropped it over the side of the bed.
“Well, I like the blue lace, but these are so much better uncovered.” And he proceeded to show her how much he liked them. One thing led to another and they didn’t fall asleep until much much later.
* * *
The next morning, Hinata woke up first. She was curled up against Neji and wondered if she would ever again be able to sleep the same without him there. She decided not to examine that too closely yet.
She carefully slipped out of bed and stretched on her way to the closet to pull on a light robe. She went over to the little kitchen area and pulled out the tea kettle and filled it quickly. Trying to be quiet, she pulled the cups out, the teapot and the tea.
While the water was heating, she started to pick up the clothes spread around on the floor. She found the shoulder seam in Neji’s shirt that was torn and blushed. She laid it over her kitchen chair to repair later. Her panties were definitely ruined, so they went into the garbage can.
As she picked up his pants, though, a small square of plastic fell out. She picked it up, trying to figure out what it was. It was mostly flat, and unlabelled. “You know, one of these days, I’m actually going to remember to use that.”
Hinata jumped as if she’d been burned. “Neji! You scared me!” She walked over to the bed and handed it to him. “What is it?”
“It’s supposed to help keep you from getting pregnant.”
Hinata turned bright red. “Ohhh!” she exclaimed softly. Her hands unconsciously went to her abdomen and her eyes flew up to his.
He took her left hand in his. “Would it bother you, to have my child, Hinata?”
She was having difficulty breathing again. The image of a tiny Neji had planted itself in her head. Curled up against her breast, feeding. She shook her head. He smiled.
“I would love to see you big with my child, Hinata, but don’t you think we’re putting the cart before the horse?” He chuckled a bit at her puzzled expression. He held her hand up and touched her ring finger with his first finger. “I’d prefer to put something here before I put something here,” and he put his other hand on her abdomen over her own.
She looked down a moment as she sorted through her thoughts. “Neji…” she cleared her throat, hoping to get around the lump that had lodged itself there. “I…” she took a deep breath. How do I say this? “I don’t want you to feel you have to bind yourself to me…any more than you already are.” She looked down again. She couldn’t look at him. She was afraid of what she would see.
It would kill her if he ever walked away. After all they’d been through. Especially after the last few days. She finally admitted to herself how much she loved him. She knew he loved her. But… Neji lifted her head up and looked into her eyes. “I will choose if I am to marry you, Hinata. No one would ever choose that for me. Nor would I allow them to force that upon you.”
He kissed her and took his pants from her. He reached into a pocket and pulled out a small box. Hinata’s eyes widened when she realized it was a jewelry box. Her gaze flew up to his face. “I have been trying to figure out the best time to bring this up. You have much facing you, and a major fight – no, not the one with Hanabi.” He said when she gasped. He smiled to himself. “That one won’t be a problem for you at all. I was thinking more along the lines of the meeting with the elders.”
He looked down at the small box he held. “I’ve been looking at this for some time. I realized the other day that it is just as likely that you may decide some day that you don’t want me.”
Hinata immediately shook her head. “I…I had just been thinking about what it would do to me if you didn’t want me…you know, for…for…” she couldn’t bring herself to say ‘a wife’.
He looked up at her and opened the box. She stared down at the most beautiful ring she’d ever seen. The amethyst flower was perfect for her. “It would be the highest honor for you to be my wife, Hinata. I love you and can’t imagine a life without you in it. Will you…” he swallowed, “marry me?”
Hinata couldn’t believe he really wanted her to be his wife. “You…really want me? I mean…for…”she tried to draw a breath. “Forever?”
He nodded solemly. She didn’t notice when the tears started to fall. She smiled through them and said quietly. “Yes. I can’t imagine a better life than to be with you forever, Neji. I love you.”
Hinata had never seen Neji smile like that. He took the ring out of the box and placed it on her left finger. He kissed it, then drew her down for another kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck and tried to show him just how much she loved him.
At that moment, the tea kettle made itself known. Hinata jumped a bit. “Oh, I made tea.” She hurried over to the stove and turned it off. She wiped at her face with the sleeve of her robe and Neji was behind her, pulling her back against his chest. He nuzzled her ear and kissed her neck. Just then, Hinata’s stomach rumbled.
He chuckled. “Well, I certainly can’t argue with that. I need to go next door and get a few things. I’ll be right back, koishii.” He kissed her again and picked up his pants and pulled them on. A few seconds later, he slipped out the back door.
Hinata quickly grabbed a pan and put it on the stove. She pulled the eggs and a few vegetables out of the refrigerator. She was going to have to go get more food if she was going to be cooking for Neji. She hoped he would be around enough for it.
He was back just as the eggs were finishing up. He set a bag on the bed, then came over to join her in the kitchen area. She tipped the food out onto plates and set them on her tiny table. She poured the water into the tea pot, took out the utensils and sat at the table.
“This little house could get crowded quickly with both of us here.” He chuckled when she looked up at him quickly. “Would you mind if I was here?”
“No. Of course not. I was actually wondering I you were a mind reader or something. I was just thinking that I needed to go down to the market if I was going to be cooking for you more often.”
“You don’t need to do that. We can eat at the main house, you know. “
She concentrated on her eggs for a moment. “I want to. I like this… it feels as if…” She let it trail off and poured the tea for them.
“As if…” he prompted.
She took a deep breath. “As if we were already married.” She looked up at him then.
He smiled again at her. “Yes, it does feel that way. I like that.” He took her hand across the table and went back to his food. “I could get used to eating like this. I wasn’t kidding when I told you I was hopeless in a kitchen. I’m lucky I don’t burn water for tea.” She chuckled.
“Well, we must go see Hanabi and begin planning. Are you up for that? I kept you up a bit last night..”
She blushed, but managed to speak. “I’ll be fine. And you shouldn’t tease your future wife like--“ she stopped when she realized what she’d said. She loved the sound of that. Neji’s wife.
“I’m looking forward to the day we can drop the ‘future’.” He squeezed her hand, then stood up and picked up the dishes.
“I can do that.” She jumped up.
He just looked over his shoulder at her when he took them to the sink. “So can I. I may not be able to cook, but I can certainly clean the dishes.” She went up to him and wrapped her arms around his waist, snuggling into his back. She breathed in his scent, still a little unable to believe that he was hers.
“If you don’t stop that, Hanabi will be kept waiting at the training grounds. I won’t be responsible for what I do when you touch me like that.” He growled that last as her hands had started to explore his chest and stomach. She giggled and danced away from him to get ready for the day.
