Chapter Thirteen
How did you explain to a child what a Jinchuuriki was? How could you tell them that a bunch of adults, people that children were generally taught to trust, put monsters inside of a bunch of children just to use them as weapons? How could you tell a child that without them being afraid?
Naruto was silent as he held his daughter, his blue eyes resting on Gaara. From the look in the red-head’s eyes, he was facing those same questions. “Mahina, why don’t you go see if Temari will make cookies.” Gaara suggested calmly. “I think we’re running low on peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Then will you see if Kankuro won’t show you how to work a puppet? I think he’d be happy to teach you since it’s a fine art.”
Mahina looked between the two men for a moment before nodding slightly. “Okay, I guess.” Mahina said as Naruto put her down. “Daddy?”
“Hmm?”
“Did I ask a bad thing?”
There was fear in her eyes, as if she were truly afraid that she had asked something wrong. “No, sweetie, Uncle Gaara and I just need to talk about how we’re going to explain it without you being afraid.” Naruto explained gently. “I know that you’re a really brave girl, but this might actually be scarier than seeing Grandma drunk.”
“Scarier than Grandma? Yeah right.”
The little girl giggled before running upstairs, yelling for Kankuro. “Okay, how are we going to explain this?” Naruto questioned as he sat down on the couch. “She’s six, she doesn’t get why she’s so special, and she doesn’t understand why she hears Kyuubi when she’s upset.”
Gaara stared at Naruto for a moment before answering, “You know how she needs to be told. It’s not a question of if she can handle it or not. The question is how she’ll react to the knowledge that the only parental figure she has a conscious memory of is a container for a demon. If we explain it to her, then she’ll be prepared for the comments that she’s likely to hear in the future from others that haven’t accepted you.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
“I know I’m right.”
When Temari and Kankuro were told of what the two males were going to do, both shinobi were ready to do what it took to help the little girl. They both knew that hearing something like that wasn’t easy to accept and they were willing to do what was needed to help the little family. “Sweetie, do you remember those pictures that you drew?” Naruto questioned gently. “The ones with those sad monsters and the people in front of them?”
“Uh huh. Hiro said not to draw that cause he said that I’d get into trouble. Kankuro took them away and I don’t know what happened to them.”
“They’re with Grandma.” Naruto reassured the little girl. “You remember what the monsters looked like, right?”
“Uh huh. I even know their names. Ichibi, Nibi, Sanbi, Yonbi, Gobi, Rokubi, Shichibi, Hachibi, and Kyuubi.” Mahina recited proudly. “I like Nibi and Kyuubi. Ichibi scares me a little.”
Naruto nodded slightly before sighing. “Sweetie, a Jinchuuriki is somebody who has one of those monsters inside of them.” Naruto explained. “Do you know why you drew all of those people in front of them?”
Mahina looked thoughtful for a moment before answering, “Cause they have the monsters with them. Well, one does. The others lost them because the bad men took them away and the bad people said that the people that lose their monsters die. I think they’re lying.”
“Why?”
“Cause, Uncle Gaara’s still here and they said that he had a monster in him. IF they took a monster away from him, then he’d be dead. Not alive.”
They could just leave the explanation there, she would never have to know that they had anything to do with the Bijuu. As much as Naruto wanted to, he knew that he couldn’t leave the subject alone. One day, someone would tell his daughter that he was a Jinchuuriki, that he was a monster. Already she was hearing whispers that her father was a demon and one day, she would ask him why people said that.
It was a day that he never wanted to come.
Naruto sighed as he looked at his daughter, seeing the look of satisfaction in her eyes. She had made a good argument but in this case, she was wrong. “Yes, when people die they can’t come back, but there was an old lady that knew how to bring a dead person back.” Gaara said with a nod. “She died bringing me back to life.”
Mahina stared at Gaara for a moment before shaking her head. “You’re silly. You didn’t die.” Mahina said, her voice showing a little uncertainty.
“Remember when I said that I used to be sick and that I’m better now?”
“Uh huh.”
“Well, that was one of the side-effects of having Ichibi with me. He made me sick and when they took him away from me, I died but once I was brought back, I was all better.”
Mahina stared at Gaara, her eyes focused as she inspected him. “Ichibi made you sick?” Mahina questioned softly.
“Yes.”
“Sweetie, you asked what Jinchuuriki were. All they are, are innocent people that had the monsters put inside of them.” Naruto explained gently.
The little girl shook her head, tears gathering and rolling down her cheeks. “No! They said that you’re a Jinchuuriki! They said that they were gonna get Kyuubi and they were gonna kill you!” Mahina screamed, tears rolling down her face. “You don’t have a monster put in you! No one put a monster in you! You’re my daddy!”
Naruto hugged his daughter, listening as she sobbed into his chest. “Sweetie…” Naruto said softly as he kissed his daughter’s head. “Do you remember when we went to Grandpa Minato’s grave?”
“Yes…” What did Grandpa Minato have to do with Naruto being a Jinchuuriki?
“Well, the night he died, a bad man made Kyuubi attack Konoha. Grandpa Minato did what he needed to do just to protect Konoha. He put Kyuubi inside of me.”
“And my father put Ichibi inside of me before I was even born, although the circumstances were different.”
She was taking the news better than he had expected.
Kyuubi was silent as he listened to the conversation, grateful that the little girl hadn’t started screaming. Instead, she just seemed to be upset that people wanted to kill Naruto when they took him away. “Hiro said that you killed someone like me. He said that you killed him.” Kyuubi heard the little girl sob to Ichibi’s former container.
“There’s a good chance that I probably did, yes.”
“Tell her that Bijuu generally killed anybody who could control us.” Kyuubi told the blonde. “Just keep reminding her that she’s safe.”
“Not every Jinchuuriki kills everybody. From what I’ve been hearing, Ichibi’s been insane for who knows how long.” Naruto said with a reassuring look.
“I think I get it.”
Naruto smiled warmly at his daughter, looking at her with the same love that a parent would hold for their child. He was grateful not to see any fear of him or Gaara in her eyes, only pure devotion. “That’s my smart girl.” Naruto said with a smile.
Mahina smiled softly before hugging Naruto tightly. “I love you, Daddy.” Mahina said innocently.
“I love you too, baby girl.”
They didn’t want to see the little girl leave, but they knew that she needed to go back to Konoha with Naruto. Of course, the Jounin and other shinobi in the village would probably start celebrating once they confirmed that the little girl had left. “You’ll come visit, right?” Mahina questioned, her clear blue eyes focused on the three adults that had taken care of her.
“Of course. Have your father send us notice when you guys are going to celebrate your birthday and we’ll try to come.” Kankuro said with a grin.
Mahina nodded, her eyes dancing happily. “I want a puppet for my birthday.” Mahina said proudly. “Just like you.”
Kankuro smiled, unable to help but feeling flattered. He had known that the little girl had taken a liking to puppets, but he hadn’t realized that she would want one. “Sure, I’ll make one just for you.” Kankuro said with a smile.
“Can it look a bit like Karasu?”
“Sure.”
Temari laughed softly as she knelt down, the little girl darting into her arms. “I’ll make sure to bring you some cookies the next time that I come to Konoha, okay?” Temari questioned.
Mahina nodded, her eyes dancing happily. “Peanut butter chocolate chip.” Mahina reminded the woman. “The bottom has to be lightly browned.”
“I know.”
Gaara watched the little girl, smiling softly at her when she directed her attention to him. “Can’t you come too?” Mahina questioned, her gentle blue eyes questioning as Gaara picked her up.
“Sorry, Mahina, but I need to stay here.” Gaara told her. “Don’t worry though, I’ll come and visit soon.”
“Promise?” Mahina questioned, her face serious. “Cross your heart and hope to die?”
“Cross my heart and hope to die.” Gaara confirmed.
The little girl nodded slightly before holding her pinky out. “Pinky swear.” Mahina told him. “That way I know you’re not lying and if you do, I get to decide what you gotta do to make up for breaking your promise.”
Naruto cracked up, knowing his daughter’s tactics. Even Kakashi had gotten caught in that one and the results had been hilarious. He still had a picture hidden of Kakashi being forced to play tea party with the little girl and her stuffed animals. “I wouldn’t break that one.” Naruto said with a laugh. “Hi-Hi, tell them what you made Uncle Kakashi do when he broke a pinky swear to you.”
Mahina grinned up at them before answering, “I made him play tea party with me and my toys. He wore a pretty pink hat and jewelry.”
As the three Sand shin obi stared at the little girl, they could see the entertainment in her eyes. She had enjoyed making the Jounin bend to her will. Smiling, Gaara nodded and wrapped a pinky around the little girl’s smaller pinky. “Pinky swear.” The redhead confirmed.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Naruto mused, Sabaku no Gaara was now on his own.
