Chapter Thirteen – I Now Pronounce You
Neji shifted for what had to be the millionth time while waiting for the tailor to fix his tux. He’d somehow managed to grow another inch since they had the tuxes fitted last. He had thought he was past his growing stage, but apparently that had been fantasy. Now, two days before his wedding, he had to have the tux altered so that he didn’t appear to be some poor unfortunate who had to raid the closet of someone shorter than he was.
Shikamaru smirked as he stood still in the room next to Neji. He knew Neji had grown recently. They had made the marriage arrangements fairly quickly. After they had spent the first night in their house their desire to move in as soon as possible was overwhelming. Shikamaru’s parents were accepting and cared for his happiness first and foremost, but they would not allow him to move in with his boyfriend before getting married.
Only a month had passed, but it seemed so much longer. Shikamaru was desperate to spend the night with Neji again. His parents hadn’t ended their sleepovers, but he would rather have spent the nights in the comfortable home Neji had purchased for them. He smiled thinking about Neji’s soft kisses and loving smiles. He would not let himself think of the other things he loved about Neji. If he did, he would wind up in an embarrassing situation since the tailor was still putting the final touches on his tux.
Shikamaru laughed as he heard the muffled, but obviously frustrated, “Stand still” float through the wall between them. Neji had been fidgitey because of the ceremony. They’d already discussed the possibility that Neji wasn’t ready for the commitment. Neji’d laughed it off, saying it was more like he couldn’t stand Hinata and Hiashi’s fussing over him. Shikamaru shrugged as his tailor dismissed him. He took the garment off and handed it to the man before moving to Neji’s room. He softly pushed the door open and smiled lovingly at his future husband. “If you stand still long enough, I’ll take you out for a nice supper.”
Neji glared at the one he loved. “You had it easy. You didn’t grow like three inches in the last week.”
Shikamaru smirked, but kept the laughter reigned in. “You do know it’s only like an inch and if you would just stand still, you’d be done by now.”
Neji pouted. He knew his boyfriend was right, but he was so nervous. There were going to be a lot of important people attending their wedding even though they had wanted to have a small ceremony. All ready the entire Hyuuga clan had RSVP’d. Shikamaru’s side of the wedding party would include Asuma, Chouji, and Naruto. Neji’s side would be Hinata, Ten-Ten, and Shino. As unconventional as the pairings may have ended up, their families wanted to have a ceremony as close to a traditional ceremony as possible. Neji made himself stand still. “It better be a nice restaurant. No more ramen, as I’ve had quite enough of that to last a lifetime after befriending Naruto, and no more BBQ.”
Shikamaru smiled softly and nodded almost imperceptibly. “I promise. A really nice restaurant for you.”
Neji finally stayed still long enough for the tailor to pin the tux appropriately. He glared when he came out of the dressing room and saw Shikamaru standing with his arms folded across his chest and leaning on the door frame. He saw the laughter shining in his fiance’s eyes. “Just drop it. You know I’m edgy.”
Shikamaru nodded. “I know, but I don’t understand why. We’re just going to say the words that are in our heart. It can’t be the chuunin exams. They’re done other than the final tournament, and that’s not for three weeks yet. You’re excellent and there’s no reason why you won’t rank.”
Neji sighed and walked toward the open arms waiting to embrace him. “I know that. I’m not stupid.” He sighed when his voice came out harsher than he meant it to. He saw the subtle change in Shikamaru’s eyes and the slight tightening of his features. Others may have missed the subtle change, but not Neji. He softly kissed Shikamaru’s lips. “I didn’t mean that to sound as angry as it did. I’m just really stressed out. This marriage is easier for you. You don’t have the societal pressures on you.”
Shikamaru laughed as he saw Neji’s face tighten. “No. I just have my mother.” Neji relaxed and laughed softly. Shikamaru pulled Neji closer to his body and dropped his head slightly to give the succulent lips that had been tempting him for hours a soft nip before pressing against them in a passionate kiss. Neji’s mouth became pliant as Shikamaru’s tongue began its invasion. Eventually Shikamaru was forced to pull away or pass out from lack of oxygen. “Lunch then?”
Neji nodded and dropped his hand to Shikamaru’s. “Let’s get something and have a picnic?”
Shikamaru smiled. “I like that idea.” He smirked as Neji led him to a restaurant he hadn’t really frequented often. They grabbed some rice and vegitables and walked to a spot Shikamaru liked to watch the clouds at. It was secluded enough of a clearing that he didn’t think anyone would interrupt their date. As soon as Neji set the food down, Shikamaru grabbed his waist and pulled him in for a passionate kiss.
Neji grinned as Shikamaru pulled them both down into the grass. “The food is going to get cold if you do this first.”
Shikamaru shrugged. “I like you better than food anyway.”
Neji blushed softly. He knew that Shikamaru really got wrapped up in a person when he was into them, but he was hearing things that never thought Shikamaru could say. Or rather, would say. Shikamaru made him happier than he had ever been in his life. He felt completely free and away from the rigors of the high society family he was born into. He wasn’t worried about being the genius of the clan or anything like that when he was with Shikamaru. He could just be Neji. “You really think I’ll rank during the exam finals?”
Shikamaru laughed softly and let Neji up so they could eat their meal. “I’d say you’ve got about an 85% chance. I just don’t want to say 100% and lie to you.” Neji nodded, appreciating the honesty within Shikamaru. He knew he would never have to worry about whether or not Shikamaru was cheating on him. Shikamaru was not a dishonest man.
******************************************
Neji sighed as his uncle brushed his hair, pulling the strands a bit harder than necessary. “Honestly, uncle. Shikamaru and I do not need anything. We just want to finish the ceremony and be together.”
Hiashi smiled a sad smile. He’d grown so fond of his nephew after his brother died. He wanted to treat Neji like part of the family, but there was a certain distance that had to be maintained. After all, Neji was branch family. Never-the-less, Hiashi was proud that Neji had found someone he was so fond of; someone that could love him back. “I just want to be sure you are taken care of. I don’t know whether or not you believe me, but I loved my brother very much. I promised him I would take care of you, and I have grown to think of you as a son rather than a nephew.”
Neji smiled as his hair was tied back for him. “I know, uncle. I appreciate it very much, but we all ready have everything we could possibly need. If something comes up, we will be sure to speak with you.”
Hiashi nodded. “Thank you, Neji. That is all I ask.” Hiashi looked at his nephew as he stood in his tux. His hair was held in place perfectly. The tux fit fantastically after the last bit of alterations, and Neji really did look handsome. “I believe it is time,” Hiashi said, not allowing the emotion he was feeling to reach his voice.
Neji nodded. They headed toward the doors of the chapel where he would take his final steps of his previous life. After today he would be Neji Hyuuga, husband to Shikamaru Hyuuga. Due to the status of the Hyuuga name, Neji’s uncle insisted he not change his name. Shikamaru’s parents hadn’t been opposed to the idea of their son taking Neji’s name, either. Neji took a deep breath and pushed the doors open before slowly making his way down the aisle alongside his uncle.
Hiashi gave Neji away. The ceremony itself was short since neither man wanted to waste their moments on a ceremony they didn’t care about. All of their precious people were in attendance. Many more were at the ceremony than would be at the reception afterwards. There were Hyuugas from even the most distant family in attendance to see the prodigy join in marriage. They had gifts piled up in one of the rooms in the church. Kiba had promised to bring them to their home along with Itachi and Genma after the ceremony.
Neji smiled as he heard, “You may kiss your husband.” Shikamaru leaned in gently with softness unusual, even for Shika, shining in his eyes. His lips found Neji’s lips compliant beyond normal and his heart pounded wildly. As he pulled away from Neji he suddenly became aware of the clapping of their audience. He blushed lightly before muttering ‘troublesome’.
Neji smirked as he heard the priest presenting them as Mr. and Mr. Hyuuga. He glanced at a still blushing Shikamaru before he gently tugged the man to the area where they would have the receiving line. Asuma stood next to Shikamaru. “I’m proud of you, Shikamaru. You’ve come such a long way in the few short months we’ve been together.”
Shikamaru smirked. “Troublesome.”
Neji sighed as the last of the distant relatives finally trickled through. He and Shikamaru finally made their way to the reception hall in the hokage tower where their closest family and friends were all ready gathered. Only a select few people had been invited to the dinner and reception. They wanted an intimate event. There was champagne, good meats, and lots of dancing to be had.
Shikamaru smiled as they stood outside the door to the reception hall. “Are you ready for this, love?”
Neji nodded. “This is what I’ve been looking forward to all day. After legally making you mine, of course.” Neji nudged his husband softly, emphasizing his joke.
Shikamaru smirked and pulled Neji to the side of the hallway, pressing him to the wall, and capturing his lips in a bruising kiss. He slid his hardening member along Neji’s waist. “This is what I’ve been thinking about all day,” he growled out as Neji moaned. His fingers slipped under Neji’s dress shirt and tuxedo jacket, rubbing along the skin of Neji’s soft stomach.
Neji was panting, wanting to skip the reception and get straight to the wedding night, but he forced his body to calm down. “Shika, baby, stop. We need to get into the reception faster so we get home faster.”
Shikamaru laughed as he kissed Neji’s lips once more before pulling them away from the door. He straightened Neji’s clothes and hair before they pushed the doors open to cheers from their friends. They smiled as people began to clink their glasses trying to make them kiss before they even got seated. Shikamaru finally relented and pulled Neji in for a quick kiss. It wasn’t that he’d ever get tired of kissing his husband, but it was so troublesome to have to do so on demand.
Neji sat down next to Shikamaru and enjoyed his food. Shikamaru was spinning after he and Neji finished their third bottle of champagne. Seeing as neither of them had been heavy drinkers ever in their lives, they were well beyond wasted. He vaguely realized someone was dancing with him again. He squinted hard. “Shoushi?” he finally slurred out.
Chouji laughed as he pulled his friend to the middle of the dancefloor. He’d never seen Shika this drunk, and it was hilarious. “Yeah, it’s me Shika.” Chouji’d had some alcohol, but he wasn’t even close to intoxicated. “Did you know that Sasuke’s passed out in a corner? Deidara’s holding him up and keeping him safe. They haven’t even had sex yet.”
Shika smiled drunkenly. “Kay. Djou know Sasfuay has a biiiiiiiiiiig, ya know?” He leaned closer to Chouji and whispered softly and giggled. “Nejums has a bigger one.”
Chouji laughed softly. “I think you’ve had more than enough to drink. It looks like your husband is in the same boat. Hinata’s over with him, doing the same thing I’m going to do with you.”
Shikamaru hiccupped. “Hey, wannano somethin else?” He didn’t wait for Chouji’s reply. “Ima let Nej take me tonigh.”
Chouji shook his head slightly. “I don’t think so, Shika. Neither of you is going to remember tonight. Someone will come by your hourse tomorrow to fill you in. Right now, Hinata and I are getting you and Neji to your home though.”
Shikamaru tripped as he tried to spin around quickly, looking for his husband. “Hey, Nevi! Pee-n-aboo.” Shikamaru fell on his ass just as Hinata brought Neji over to join Chouji. Shikamaru smirked. “I see ya, Nemi! You no gonna ge’ away this time.” He threw his arms around Neji’s legs, knocking the other severly intoxicated man over.
Neji smirked as he fell on Shikamaru. “Mmm, sesssy!” He kissed Shikamaru deeply, pulling the dress shirt off of his husband’s delicious frame. “Yousso warm! I get ya cooler. Take off these clothes.” Shikamaru smirked as Neji started to undo the buttons. Both were so drunk they were missing the cat calls coming their way from all their friends.
Chouji smirked at Hinata as she grabbed Neji and pulled him up, Kiba on the other side. Chouji lifted Shikamaru and turned toward the party. “We’ll be back soon. We just need to get the happy couple to the right home.”
Itachi chuckled at Chouji’s announcement. “Hurry back. Gen and I are starting poker in half an hour. If you and Kiba aren’t back, we’re not dealing you in.”
