The sun had set hours ago, but still they were walking. Sasuke wanted to speak up, wanted to ask his brother when they would stop, but he wasn't really tired and he was a little worried about Itachi's stability at the moment. Ever since the comment about the roller coaster his brother had been very quiet. They did not stop to eat dinner, and now although Sasuke wasn't physically tired he was getting light-headed from hunger.
"Itachi, when will we stop?"
"..."
"I prefer you hitting me to you ignoring me." He mumbled.
"..."
"Itachi! Are you sleepwalking? Stop being such a bastard and answer me!" Sasuke yelled this time to make certain his brother wasn't actually sleepwalking and when he said nothing he pushed him hard. He knew he was about to get his ass kicked, but he would not be ignored.
Itachi didn't move. He stayed on his hands and knees in the middle of the road. Sasuke felt like he was going to throw up.
"Itachi?"
"..."
"What the fuck! Get up!" Sasuke nudged his brother with his foot.
"..."
"Get up or I'll kill you. I swear to fucking hell I will kill you if you don't stand up right now." He nudged him harder this time. Still he didn�t move.
Sasuke was starting to panic. 'Is this it?' This wasn't what he wanted. He didn't want to kill a whacked out Itachi on some country road in the middle of the night. How was he going to fight the witch and get back Naruto? Sasuke kicked Itachi hard in the ribs.
"Damn it! What's your problem?"
"...mmppgh hf fjkld..." Itachi's mumbling was so low that even in the still of the night Sasuke could not make out what he said.
"What?" He leaned down next to his older brother.
"Make her stop." 'Oh shit, he's lost it again.'
"Make who stop?"
"Mina. Make her stop." 'Who the fuck is Mina? Oh yeah, the witch.'
"The witch? I don't know how to make her stop. I don't know what she's doing. I don't even know what you're talking about. Now stand up.� 'Stand up, dammit!�
Sasuke grabbed his brother around the waist and heaved him to his feet. He pulled them into the forest a little ways and propped his brother up against a tree. This was seriously fucked up. In the moonlight he could see his brother's eyes were open but he was staring straight ahead at something Sasuke could not see.
"Why did you bring me in here?" It was the clearest thing Itachi had said in hours, but it didn't seem like he was speaking to him. He was apparently speaking to a branch about 10 inches to Sasuke's left.
'This is so wrong. What am I going to do? What am I going to do?'
He grabbed Itachi's bag and pulled out a few weapons. His brother did not move. He pulled out a pair of handcuffs and placed them around his brother's wrists. Itachi didn't even glance at him. He dug deeper into the bag and found a long narrow key. He tried it in the clasp of his wristbands, and sure enough, they fell to the forest floor. He picked them up and placed them around Itachi's wrists. This time Itachi looked up at him, mumbled something, and then looked back at a tree in the distance.
Even though he was fairly sure Itachi couldn't understand a word he was saying at the moment, he spoke his thoughts out loud because the sound of his own voice was more comforting than the silence.
"I could kill you, do you know that? You're just sitting over there like a child. This isn't how I wanted it to be. I've hated you for so long. You made me hate you! You robbed me of everything and you left me alone. Why did you do it? Why? Why did you leave me? Why did you kill them all? Why did you let me live?" Sasuke felt a tear drop onto his arm. He hadn't even realized he was crying.
Rage like he had never known coursed through his veins. He picked up the closest Kunai and threw it hard at his brother's face. It grazed Itachi's right ear. Itachi hadn't flinched; Sasuke had missed his mark.
He picked up another weapon and threw this one even harder. Again it missed an inch to the left.
He stood up and picked up the largest knife in the bag. He walked over to where his brother sat against the tree, still staring off into nothingness. He ran the blade under Itachi's chin. The knife was sharp. Another millimeter and he would draw blood. Sasuke took a deep breath.
He couldn't do it. He couldn't kill him like this. His knees gave out and he fell hard against Itachi, the knife burying itself into the ground. Tears started streaming down his face and he wanted to move but he couldn't. He was held in place by his inability to complete his mission. It was then that he heard Itachi whisper something into the darkness he never expected to hear.
"Because I loved you."

"Gaara?"
"Naruto????"
"What the fuck are you doing?" Naruto tightened his grasp on Gaara's wrist and the red haired boy let go of Mina.
"You know each other?" Mina rubbed her wrist where Gaara had twisted it and glared at him, narrowing her eyes with each word. Naruto hadn't seen her look more like Sasuke than she did at that moment.
"What are you trying to pull?" Gaara hissed between clenched teeth. "First I hear you've been kidnapped and then here you are, dressed in Witch Village attire accompanying a jutsu'd out Sasuke through the streets at night? Is this a mission?"
"A jutsu'd out Sasuke?" Naruto repeated as he released his grip.
"Yes, your stupid Sexy No Jutsu."" Now it was Gaara's turn to rub his own wrist.
"Is that what you thought? This isn't Sasuke, baka, this is his sister, Mina."
Neji stepped forward and Gaara noticed him for the first time.
"I think you owe her an apology." His voice was cold and self-assured. Gaara hated him. He pursed his lips together to show exactly how unlikely it was that Mina would receive anything of the sort.
"It's ok. He doesn't need to apologize. He didn't really hurt me. He just scared me. C'mon, I need to find somewhere quiet."
Both Naruto and Neji were surprised at Mina's quick dismissal of the situation.
"Something is wrong." she whispered under her breath.
"Wrong with what?" Naruto asked, alarmed at the urgency in her voice. He didn't get a reply though because Mina fell to the pavement, cracking the back of her head open on a step.
"Mina! Mina!" Naruto tried to get her to open her eyes, but to no avail. She was out cold.
"I didn't do it." Gaara said. If possible his eyes had gotten bigger and he looked upset. "I just grabbed her wrist. That wouldn't make her pass out would it?"
Naruto was surprised at the concern in Gaara's voice.
"We can take her back to my place. It's not far. Maybe she just needs to lie down, or a drink of water."
Neji looked up and down the street. This wasn't the greatest part of town and it would be risky to take her to a hospital.
"I think it's our best option." Neji said softly to Naruto.
"I agree. Lead the way."
Naruto scooped Mina up gently from the sidewalk and tried not to pay too much attention to the trail of blood they were leaving behind them.

"Itachi?" Mina didn't know why she was surrounded by darkness, but she knew someone else was in here and it had to be him. She could always sense him when he was close. She saw him before he spoke. He was sitting on the floor looking straight ahead, although he looked younger than when she had last seen him.
"Why did you bring me in here?"
"I was about to ask you the same thing, brother."
"Am I unconscious?"
"I don't think I could be in your mind if you weren't. I taught you too well and I can't creep in while you sleep."
"You've tried?"
"A few times."
Silence. There was nothing to say. Here in the dreamscape he could not harm her.
"I've been feeling your emotions all day. Have you been doing it on purpose?"
"No. I wouldn�t know how even if I wanted to. I've been concentrating on finding you though. I suppose that could be it. I don't think I've ever focused so hard on you before. Is Sasuke with you?"
"He was. I think."
"You think?" Mina felt her tone change. "What do you mean you think? If he's with you, you damn well better know."
"He's here."
"Are you both safe?"
"For now. But not for long. Someone is coming. He doesn't realize it though."
"Then wake up!"
"I can't."
"You have to warn him."
"I can't."
"Itachi wake up."
"I'm trying. I can't. It's not that I won't. It's that it isn't possible."
Mina lifted her hand and Itachi looked her straight in the eye.
"Don't do it Mina. Leave me alone. Sasuke will hear them soon enough and he'll run. He'll leave me here and they'll kill me."
His voice was so matter of fact that Mina wanted to run over to him and shake him. This wasn't how he was going to go.
"Just leave me alone sister. Let this be the end."
"No." Mina took a step closer to Itachi and placed her hand on his forehead. He looked up at her and for the first time he noticed that she didn't look like the Mina of now. She was only twelve years old.
"Why?" He couldn't understand why she wouldn't just let him be... why she wouldn't just let this pain end.
"Because I loved you."

�Sasuke.� Itachi said his first word not realizing that he had even said it. He looked down at his chained wrists. �Shit.� Sasuke had gotten into his bag.
�Sasuke, we need to get up. We need to get moving. Someone is coming.�
Sasuke lifted his tear stained face to stare at his brother. He didn�t know what to think anymore.
�This would be easier if you would take these restraints off but we don�t have time to argue about it, so stand up. We need to run.�
Sasuke stood up, still staring at his brother.
�Are you you again?� His voice was shaky and Itachi could see him try to steady himself, his ninja training kicking in.
�I was always me. I was just� away� for a few minutes.� He looked left and right, noticing the weapons embedded into the tree inches from his head. �A few minutes I see you made good use of. Now run.� With that he took off deeper into the forest. Sasuke followed after him struggling to keep up. Even with dampened chakra and chained wrists Itachi was agile and quick.
They ran and ran until both boys were gasping for breath. The forest was thinning out and if the shards of sand being kicked up by the wind were any indication, they were much closer to their destination than Sasuke had thought. They slowed down their pace and Itachi motioned for his brother to stop all together.
�Can� you� tell� me� what� we�re� running� from?� Each word was drawn out by a quick inhalation of air.
�We aren�t running from anything anymore. I only planned on getting you this far. You need to keep going. I�m going to stay here. They only want me.�
Sasuke was looking at him like he was crazy again.
�Let me get this straight. You want me to run on ahead while Naruto and the witch come and get you. You aren�t going to ask me to take off your chains? You�re just giving yourself up?�
�No, it isn�t Naruto and Mina. They�ll be waiting for you in Sand Country. I was lying before. Mina won�t harm you and she hasn�t harmed Naruto. I�m sure she�ll explain. You need to get moving Sasuke. They�ll be here soon.�
Sasuke shook his head.
�I�m not leaving you.�
�Stop being stubborn you ungrateful little brat. I haven�t let you live a hundred times to have you killed now. Once they find me they won�t continue following you. Now go.�
�Itachi stop this!�
�GO!� Itachi pushed his brother hard and then took off running back toward the thickest part of the woods.
�Fuck this.� Sasuke took off running in the opposite direction of Itachi. If his brother really had lost his mind he wasn�t going to go chasing after him. He needed to find Naruto. What was it that Itachi had said? �They�ll be waiting for you in Sand County.�
�Well, if it�s true, I better get moving.� He raced off into the night, not exactly sure what he was running from, but knowing full well what he was running to.
