"Ask him out…ask him out…" murmured Jiraiya, "But how?"
It was somewhat different from the day at the resort, and seemed rather difficult now that things had changed. What if he’d say no? What if he’d get rejected? Well, he wouldn’t give up right after one try, but still. How? Orochimaru, being a legendary shinobi, acted so shy when it came to love. He didn't want to freak him out...Again...and make him cry.
"I need some help" the toad sage thought to himself while heading to a bookstore. He couldn't get the black haired male out of his mind no matter how hard he tried. And to his nature he refused to simply call a day and give up. He would try, and if that failed, he would try some more. Hopefully his easily irritated team mate would not kill him after his failed attempts. He had already caused the snake summoner much grief during their odd exchanges. Still... Orochimaru had been acting so different from what Jiraiya was used to. He was used to a colder, more calculating ninja who hardly showed a flicker of emotion, yet during their date he became that of an emotional wreck, startled at the briefest of physical contact and wounded at the smallest of words. It was a new element to his character Jiraiya did not understand, but none the less, it somehow made the toad sage want him more.
-------------------------------
Orochimaru hurried home, right after the encounter with Tsunade.
"Could the problem be my own behaviour?" He asked himself as he stepped in front of his mirror in the hall with critical eyes, they narrowed when he saw his own reflection before he spoke his thoughts out loud, -Look, I’m a smartass, the sandaime’s favorite, I don’t have a life, but I read a lot about it. Ahh!-
He sighed and swiped black strands out of his face when they got in the way of his vision, his yellow eyes reflected back at him and he wished they wouldn't. Wished he was looking into a different reflection rather than his own. Suddenly his every feature was beginning to become something he hated. His unusually yellow eyes, his pale skin, his long black hair and frail thin form. "Nothing about me is right, my look, my personality. It’s not sexy at all."
He stepped in to his bedroom -and living room. His eyes trailed to the pile of reports that had to be done on his desk, "I should learn to relax… Why do I always have to overdo everything? There are other people who could do these anyway… "
He knew the answer to his own question however. But that was something he didn’t ever want to admit to himself. That, he needed their attention; he yearned for the respect he never got.
-Jiraiya? Good to see you again!- The merchant said happily with his usual friendly smile.
-Nice to meet you.- Jiraiya responded as he entered the store.
-Are you looking for those magazines?- he winked, -I saved one of the newly published ones.
-No… no…- Jiraiya said his eyes trailing off the man speaking, the merchant appeared shocked by the reply, the unusual response.
--Really?
-I mean not now… I only want this…- he said as he picked out a book, he hid it under his clothing so that no one else could see.
-100 ways to ask her out,- the man read aloud to the toad sage’s annoyance, -The great Jiraiya needs some help?-
-It’s for a friend…- Jiraiya muttered.
-Haha, sure!- The man chuckled, no one else in the store much cared about the exchange, but still the white haired male felt as if everyone was now watching him. If he didn't have more self control he may have punched the man for the evident mockery. Instead he simply made his purchase and thanked him for his time.
-A little change in my ordinary appearance won’t do any harm.- Orochimaru said as his eyes gazed over his reflection once more, "It’s getting to be a little boring. Always the same hair and clothing…"
He opened his wardrobe. "Something provocative, she says…maybe I should try a new outfit for today’s training as well." The male traced his fingers over the material in his cupboard and assessed the fabric. Who was he fooling? He knew how the human mind worked, he knew exactly how to play his cards to get his team mate to notice him. The male mind was not so complex, he folded a few items of clothing over his arm and let his calculating eyes fall to the arrangement. He was one of the Sannin, the most cunning out of all three. He would most certainly make sure he got the mans attention. This time around he would make more advances. He would put the past behind him, he would make his next move count. The snake summoner was known for winning all his battles, so he would treat this mess of love the same as any war... And he would win.
-How to ask a shy girl out… This chapter will do.- Jiraiya read aloud, "First: Hang around her more often. More often than this? The way to a shy girl’s heart is to break through her shyness barrier."
The white haired man scratched his head, his friend was a different kind of shy, a confident kind of shy. He would voice his opinions, but he would so hide any information at the same time.
"Be study buddies…Not a good idea…” Jiraiya thought. The other was far more superior in that regard, it would be an embarrassment, he immediately went to the next statement.
"Sit with her at lunch and simply chat about everyday’s life. -When does he take lunch???- Jiraiya said moving to the next bit, "Compliment her on her reading choices, and talk about books together...He doesn’t seem to read, other than his boring textbooks and stuff."
"Compliment her on her achievements, be supportive and congratulate her." That seemed simple enough the man thought, as he went to the next point, "Second: Talk together.
Do what you can to find chatting opportunities. Whatever the case, seize the opportunities to have small talk with her. And when you do: Ask her questions…" the next lines were making sense in the white haired mans head and absorbed them like a sponge as he read them over, "Be a great listener and be supportive of the things she tells you.. Don’t interrupt her…"
He sunk his head deeper into the book as he tried his best to remember all the key elements to making matters work.
"Talk only a little bit about yourself. She can find out more later, and a little mystery is a great thing. I guess there is no more mystery." thought Jiraiya as he realized that most of the time he was talking about himself, "Three: Get to know her friends. I think we can skip that part. Four…"
The sun was already setting as team Hiruzen waited for their last member to arrive. It was unlike the prodigy of the team to be late, but he was nowhere to be seen.
-Where is Orochimaru?- asked Sarutobi somewhat puzzled. He was well aware the snake summoner was always the first to arrive, so he didn’t understand the situation, -If Orochimaru is not here, there must be a great problem.
--Don’t worry!- Tsunade reassured him, -He’ll be here soon, I’m sure.
- my apologies for being late.- Orochimaru said, as he came up to his team his long black hair trailing behind him. He didn’t get a response. Not because they were angry, but because they were rather stunned. No wonder, instead of the ordinary clothing he usually wore he now donned an embroidered, pale pink robe. His hair was pinned up, and he was definitely using more makeup this time, although it was done to such accuracy it was hard to see it was makeup at all.
-Umm… - tried Sarutobi, but he was speechless.
-Se…- Jiraiya stopped his usual words from falling out, he then yelled at himself in his head, "don’t sexualize him!”
-I like the new hair …and outfit.- said Jiraiya, after a long time of thinking, -it suits you a lot.
-Wow! That’s it!- whispered Tsunade excitedly as she winked to her friend.
-Shall we start our training?- said the sandaime finally.
This time, they trained a little longer than usual, everything about the session seemed very different from their ordinary training lessons.
Jiraiya for once, couldn’t get enough of it. He watched his black haired team mate for the entire sparring match, he was captivated by him. Every move he made, every jump and step, every graceful dodge mimicked by an accurate and elaborate counter attack. He moved around the field completely entrancing the white haired shinobi. The small blows of wind seemed to reveal more and more of the flawless skin from under the soft fabric.
-Can we continue after a short break?- asked Jiraiya, panting heavily.
-What’s gotten into you? You are usually to first to run away!- laughed Sarutobi.
-Are you mad?- Orochimaru asked chuckling, he sat under a tree where his backpack laid before he picked out a scroll.
-It’s my chance…- Jiraiya whispered to himself before looking at the eye capturing snake summoner, -Oro… how about…-
-Yes, Jiraiya? Orochimaru asked his slanted eyes looking up charmingly. This time there was slight amusement in his voice.
-How about studying together?- Jiraiya asked quickly.
-Really, are you serious?- started Orochimaru, - I thought you stopped studying the minute you were promoted to chunin.-
It was said slightly rudely in the white haired man’s head. He didn’t stop studying. He just learned from ‘life’ unlike Orochimaru.
As the pale shinobi saw his friend get a bit offended, he started to apologize.
-I didn’t mean it like that Ji. It’s just that you… well… we can study together if you want.- Orochimaru stated brushing some of his fallen hair back into place after re-pinning it.
Jiraiya sat next to him; their shoulder touched each other’s as the larger man settled beside him.
Tsunade and Sarutobi left the spot as the blond female lead her teacher away. He was still well aware something was up however.
-What’s with the two of them?- asked the hokage, - They used to be rivals…
-It’s a long story.- she said, putting her hand on her sensei’s shoulder.
She refrained from spilling all of the gossip she knew and instead swopped the topics and Carrie don guiding her mentor away to give her male team mates space.
Orochimaru watched her leave and felt slight apprehension. Now was his time to make a mark, to be remembered, to make the other make crazy about him. He refused to fall into the shadows again, he was sick of living in the dark. His light kimono blew in the wind as he sat elegantly beside his team mate.
-What is this? These numbers and letters and…- Jiraiya started baffled.
-It’s chemistry.- Orochimaru replied calmly.
-Oook. It seems hard… Do you like it?- Jiraiya asked.
-What do you mean?- Orochimaru asked, staring at the paper.
-To learn this stuff.- Jiraiya said as he pointed to the scroll.
-No.- Orochimaru replied honestly.
-Then why do it?- Jiraiya asked.
-I like what I can use this knowledge for.- Orochimaru said meeting eyes with the other man for a brief moment.
-And what do you use it for?- Jiraiya questioned curiously.
-Research and science, you know...- Orochimaru stated.
-Wow! That’s something! And…- Jiraiya asked.
“Like he didn’t know…” Orochimaru thought to himself, he then looked at the other man with amused eyes, -Really, what kind of game is this?- Orochimaru asked laughing.
--Whaaat? Somehow I feel you don’t take me seriously! I came here to study with you.- Jiraiya said quickly.
-No. It seems like you came here to be with me, while I’m studying.- Orochimaru said with his still calculating eyes.
-Does it irritate you?- Jiraiya asked.
-I don’t mind.- he said. However he was so amused, he didn’t even read a line.
-Did you have lunch?- Jiraiya suddenly asked breaking the snake summoner’s trail of thought.
-No.
-Well, I have double…- Jiraiya said happily.
-I’m not hungry.- Orochimaru replied calmly as he realigned himself to get comfortable. He made an effort to make his movements more elaborate and graceful, he wanted the other man to notice his every move.
-Really? It’s from Ichiraku.- He took out two boxes, -It smells good… Mmm… and it tastes good!
-People really can’t study beside you, right?- Orochimaru muttered.
-It's fine, you just continue reading, I don’t want to bother you. I'll just eat my delicious, lukewarm lunch…- Jiraiya said purposefully making a point.
-Bastard!- Orochimaru said with a light laugh, his voice had a small tone of seduction in it, always making Jiraiya listen more carefully.
-Give it to me.- demanded the smaller male as he threw away the scroll. It tumbled onto the grass and lay in its unraveled mess. Jiraiya laughed and gave the other his box eagerly.
-So you do eat.- He teased.
-Did you think I just survived on air?- The snake summoner said flashing enchanting eyes at him.
-Maybe.- Jiraiya laughed, -you're pretty much capable of anything right?
-Maybe.- Orochimaru said insidiously with a rare smile on his face, the white haired man wished he could have sat there forever, but he knew he had to keep the conversation going for that to be a possibility.
-Do you read?- He asked.
-Excuse me?- Orochimaru asked slightly confused.
-You know, books…- Jiraiya said.
-I…- the black haired male was interrupted.
-Not those boring, dry things you sleep with,- Jiraiya stated forgetting he had interrupted him. - but books with a story. Literature.
-You accuse me of lacking general knowledge? I know all the classics, contemporary literature… I even read your pathetic attempts of novels!- Orochimaru said his once seductive eyes now more narrowed and irritated.
-Sorry, I didn’t know.- Jiraiya said realizing he had just mocked the mans hobbies and his character. And too make matters worse he had even interrupted him in doing so.
-Thanks for the meal. I've got to go.- Orochimaru said standing up, he picked up his scroll, and headed for home. Not in his usual manner but in a more hurried one.
Jiraiya cussed at his failed attempt. He messed up right at the end, all he could do was watch the beautiful male leave, watch him fade into the distance the light pink kimono still fighting against the wind as he walked.
That night Jiraiya relayed the day, he wasn't giving up, he made a checklist of what had happened while the dating book lay open beside him.
"Be study buddies: check!" He said.
"Talk together: check!"
"Sit with him at lunch and simply chat about everyday life: check."
"Compliment him on his achievements, be supportive and congratulate him: well sort of…"
"Do what you can to find chatting opportunities: did that."
"Ask him questions: got that."
"Be a great listener and be supportive of the things he tells you: um... Well I didn't do so great at that part..."
"-Don’t interrupt him... Ugh... I messed up there big time. Why am I such an idiot?!!" Jiraiya closed the book, he had done all those things and his eyes he had gotten most of them right, so he technically passed the test. But there was still one unanswered question, "…How the hell will I ask him out?!!..."
Orochimaru sat on his own rooftop looking out at the landscape by his home. He was slightly cold now that it was night, his light pink kimono hardly keeping him warm. It hadn't worked entirely how he had wanted, he looked the part, but he did not feel the part. After all those years the other male still hardly knew him at all. The wind blew at his neatly done hair until it was torn from its pins. It messily whipped around and fell around his thin form and he hugged his legs to his chest.
He closed his eyes and the memory of them sitting side by side flashed by him. He opened them again quickly, this time light tears staining them, he swiped the droplets away and stood up to return to his house where it was warm. He climbed into his bedroom through the window before entering his bathroom. He gazed at his own reflection, he looked beautiful and yet he did not feel beautiful. Would that ever change?
He wiped the make up off his face as it was starting to run in a dark black stain when he could not stop the tears from falling down. He was not sobbing, he stared on calmly despite the fact that tears fell down his cheeks slowly. He robotically wiped the makeup off using his light pink kimonos sleeve, the black of the mascara was left behind on its pink fabric but he hardly cared.
He looked stunning, he looked picture perfect and yet he felt a mess, would changing his outside appearance change what was inside of him? Never.
