Sorry this took so long to post. this chapter has a lot-ish medical terms so if you don't know them just ask an I will put a little note on the bottom of the chapter. I am actually really proud of this one for some reason, so I hope you like it. Let me know what you think!
The drive to the hospital was nerve wracking for Itachi. For one it took nearly an hour because of an accident blocking most of the roads. After finally getting there, a nursing student, -not even a real nurse yet, mind you!- has the gall to tell him that without some kind of proof that he was really Sasuke's brother, she couldn't let Itachi see him!
It was only doctor Tsunade walking by that saved the poor girl after Itachi decided that he was going to give her a piece of his mind. When Tsunade walked a furious Itachi to the ICU where his brother was, the girl was in tears bordering on hysteric.
Seeing Naruto at Sasuke's bedside did little for Itachi's mood. It took Itachi a few minutes to even be sure the man was breathing, with how still he was. It wasn't hard to imagine what must be going through his mind. While the Angel had saved his brother he had also been the one to hurt him. Itachi barely noticed the nurse at the other end of the room. Her presence offering no comfort to him.
"How is he?" Itachi finally asked the nurse.
"He's doing a little better. He opened his eyes this morning but he hasn't since. We where actually wanting to talk to you about something" Answered Tsunade before the nurse could. As she walked in Itachi could see a clipboard in her hand.
At his nod she pulled some papers from Sasuke's chart and began to look over them as she spoke.
"We would like to put him on a ventilator for a few days. His ribs are broken and during the few moments he seemed aware, he was in pain and couldn't breathe. The vent is only temporary until his upper ribs begin to heal. It will keep us from having to give him so much pain medication.
"He has been on the highest dose of pain killers we can give him, but we can't do that for too long, the side affects would be severe. And may even interfere with his brains ability to heal itself. To use a vent we would have to put him in a medical coma for a few days but he will be able to breathe without pain. It should only take a few more days to a week for the upper ribs to fuse enough for him to be alright on is own. The biggest concern right now is that he will wake fully and panic being unable to breathe and he will hurt the ribs further. The risk of fragments entering his lungs and heart are high."
Itachi took a moment to just breathe. God how he wished Deidara were here. He needed someone to lean on.
"You can't just take him into surgery and fix them? Like a stint or something, to keep them in place?"
"No, they broke in such a way that surgery wouldn't really help. And he would have to be placed on a ventilator after rib surgery anyway being so close to his lungs. Its best to let them heal on their own. The fractured bone is close enough to where it is supposed to be, that we would only go in if the bone shifted out of alignment. He was lucky. It could be a lot worse."
Itachi sighed. He really had no choice. After singing on the dotted line with the X, he handed the papers back to Tsunade. She nodded before going off to get the machine.
'It should not be this hard.' Itachi thought as Doctor Tsunade came back with another Doctor, a nurse, and the ventilator.
Three weeks later.
"His X-rays look good." Doctor Tsunade said. She had put the film on the light box in the room as if she expected Naruto or Itachi to know what the hell they where looking at.
"I'd say he looks good enough to take off the vent. Finally. I did not expect him to be on it this long. We will keep a team in here just to make sure he breathes on his own, but after that it should only be a few hours before he wakes up." she said taking the X-ray film and walking out to page a crash team for stand by.
"Finally. I'm gonna call Deidara. He should know. It might make him feel better." Itachi said with a little hope. Deidara had called nearly a week after Sasuke had been put on the vent. He said that he needed time, but that Itachi could still call if he needed someone.
It had been hard for the older Uchiha without his lover around, but he consoled himself with the fact that Deidara hadn't outright left him. Yet. It seemed Kiba had yet to find out where Deidara had picked up the demon, but was still searching.
After getting off the phone Itachi wandered back to Sasuke's room. Seeing Naruto sitting at Sasuke's side made him think of something.
"I don't know if I've asked this yet or not, Naruto, but why didn't you heal him? You can heal right?" Itachi questioned
"No, I can't. If I could I would have the moment I got here no matter the attention it would have drawn. It is a physical pain to me to see him like this."
"I really hurts you for him to be hurt?" he asked surprised.
"I, the one who is supposed to protect him, failed. I will suffer as he suffers. Any pain done unto him I will feel in my own flesh."
"You are starting to sound old. And kinda poetic. I think."
"It is the words of a curse. When Angels first met with humans they changed things that shouldn't have been changed. Death can not touch Angels, and when the two mixed Death failed to claim some humans that where meant to die. As punishment when a human saves an Angel they are cursed. They share pain with the human that saved them, and they share mortality. An Angel bound to the human that saved them can be touched by Death. It is one of very few ways to end an Angel."
Before Itachi could ask more, Doctor Tsunade walked back in.
Itachi held his breath as Doctor Tsunade went through the steps of removing the vent in quick order, attentive eyes and firm movements. Beside him stood Naurto, tensing as if fighting an urge to hover over Sasuke's form more than he already was.
Sasuke's face was freed from the vent and time seemed to freeze. Itachi felt his heart pounding and how his view blurred around the edges.
Then, like a whisper, the sound of Sasuke's quiet breathing broke the silence of the room.
Itachi hadn't realized even Doctor Tsunade had been holding her breath until he heard her sigh in relief along with himself and Naruto.
"Ok, it shouldn't be too long before he wakes up. Please send for me when he does. I want to be in here quickly to evaluate him fully." she said before walking out.
"And now we wait." Naruto said. Itachi nodded as he took up the chair opposite him. The silence that followed was stifling and oppressive but the two men couldn't bring themselves to break it. They could only sit and listen to the only sounds in the room. Sasuke's breathing, and the beep beep beep of his heart.
'Please, wake up soon.'
