Rain drenched the sand beneath their feet, heavy and unyielding. It would have been a welcome relief if it hadn’t been so unnatural. Even without the Byakugan, Hinata could tell. They all could. It just wasn’t monsoon season in Suna. Each drop was laced so thickly with chakra it hindered their every move. The pressure was even making her feel nauseous.
Her team, a jumble of Chuunin from various villages lumped together for the duration of the Jounin exam, had been out under the beating sun for over eight days. After several deadly skirmishes that left behind one or two bodies, her team now had the scroll everyone was after. Now all they had to do was defend it until the end of the exam.
The rain was a sure sign of an impending attack, however, one hour rolled into another and not a single person stirred beyond the stream of water.
They didn’t understand it. With the rain as a cover the enemy could have easy launched an attack by now. With similar numbers the enemy would have had the advantage of the rain as cover.
It wasn’t until the first of her team members collapsed that Hinata realised too late as to what was going on.
Focusing her Byakugan on her team for the first time, she could see it. The rain wasn’t a mask for an attack after all. Under her superior eyesight she could see the water draining her team mate’s chakra as it fell on them, leeching it into the sand.
More team members collapsed and before Hinata could warn them, a wave of dizziness hit her and she fell to her knees. Her gut twisted violently and she promptly emptied her stomach contents on the sand in front of her. She retched a few more times, dry heaving as her stomach was empty. By the time she looked up, no one else was awake anymore, just her and her vision was becoming blurry.
A hollow chuckle reached her ears and she turned to the voice. Out of the rain came only one man, not a team of people as she’d expected but just a single shinobi.
He wielded a parasol to keep the rain off himself and wore a maniacal grin that sent shivers down Hinata’s spine.
“We meet again,” the man said.
“You’ll never get the scroll.”
“You think I want your stupid scroll?” he snarled. “Entering this ridiculous exam was just my cover to get close to you.”
He came closer and Hinata didn’t have the energy to move away. Instead she stared, willing her tongue to cooperate and let her speak.
“W-who…?” she finally managed.
“You don’t remember me?” he spat, “You ruined everything and you can’t even remember?! We were going to raise a new village – a better hidden village than any before it. All we had to do was get rid of that pathetic excuse for a Kazekage to raise our esteem; to strike fear into all the other villages. It should have been easy. After all he was weak after what the Akatsuki did. We would have succeeded if you hadn’t been in our way.”
He sneered at her, the glint on a kunai flashed as he brought the weapon to her throat.
“Nevermind,” he said, the gleam of victory lighting his eyes, “you won’t live long enough to worry about interfering a second time. I’ll even do you a favour, I’ll save you all the pain you inflicted on me when you left me to bleed out and kill you cleanly.”
Suddenly memory sliced through her consciousness.
“Yoh…” she croaked.
“So you do remember. Last time we weren’t prepared for you but this time there is no one to interfere. I’ll be the last face you see before you meet your maker.”

He wasn’t stalking.
At least that was what Gaara told himself for the umpteenth time as he continued to watch Hinata for the eighth day in a row.
You couldn’t call it stalking when he was an examiner and her an examinee, He reasoned with himself. He was just doing his job.
That and the fact that this exam was set out like a real mission and there was a real chance of dying didn’t influence his decision in the least.
He’d watched when the rain had begun. The caster had targeted Hinata’s group and the rain only fell in a small radius around them.
Creeping closer he’d watched as one by one her team members fell. Then he saw Hinata fall and the glint of a kunai.
He didn’t hesitate. As Hinata lost consciousness he was there to catch her before she hit the ground and Yoh’s thrust of his kunai landed harmlessly into a bed of sand that automatically shielded the redhead.
A look of surprise crossed Yoh’s face at the unexpected impact and he sprung back into a defensive stance.
“Well if it isn’t Sabaku no Gaara,” Yoh straightened with a smile. “I should have expected you would be here. But then again… maybe I did…”
Before Gaara could even register the ninja’s words, a rain of poisoned needles descended from the sky. They plunged in an arc around the pair kneeling on the ground, their sharp points slicing deeply into flesh and bone. Or at least that should have been the case. It was what Yoh had anticipated, after all a sudden attack like that left no room for counter measures. If it had been anyone else, he probably would have been successful, but as usual Gaara’s sand instinctively responded to the threat and stopped the needles dead in their tracks.
Yoh’s shock instantly turned to fury, his face contorting into an ugly sneer.
“NO!” he snarled, “You will not thwart me a second time!”
He made to lunge at the pair that hadn’t moved; bunching up his muscles to spring from his position only to find he was stuck. “Wha–” Tendrils of sand had gripped Yoh in place, snaking up his legs and holding him so tightly he couldn’t even wiggle his toes.
“Did you forget where you were?” Gaara asked in a calm voice. “This is my desert after all.”
At this rate the only way for him to escape was to cut off his own legs. Even as he had those thoughts, the sand continued to move, winding itself around his waist and up his torso until it bound his entire body with silent efficiency.
With only his face exposed, fear entered Yoh’s mind, his eyes sinking into the back of his skull so only the whites showed.
“AAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH,” he screamed, knowing this was his end. The sound was cut off abruptly as sand streamed over his face and into his mouth, choking him before Gaara gave the command for the course granules to crush every bone and organ in his body. As blood leaked out of the aptly named desert coffin Gaara was infinitely glad Hinata was not able to see the bloody display. Even he had lost a taste for this kind of bloodshed.
Calling medics to rescue the others in Hinata’s team, he left Yoh for the ANBU to clean up and headed back to Suna with the unconscious Hyuuga.
She didn’t look hurt but Hinata was deathly cold to his touch. Desperately he prayed to whoever would listen to keep his precious person safe.
