A/N Oh my gosh has it really been 2 weeks since I posted?!? I'm so sorry! Actually I hate to admit it, but I've been wanting to watch episodes with Sai but haven't gotten around to more than just a couple. (and that first episode where he's sitting on the roof... his body language is hot!) I wanted to write him in character but I only know him from fanfiction! lol I know, it's a problem. Anyway, I'm sooooo glad everyone liked the last chapter. And moochew I loved how you phrased it... an emotional plot. I read that and it was like... 'that's it! that's what I feel when I'm writing!' :) Anyway... I'll shut up now.
Chapter 13 Sai’s POV
Sai glanced at the clock and wondered what was keeping his two teammates. While it wasn’t uncommon for him to be up first, it was uncommon for him to have to wait this long. He was almost finished with his second cup of coffee and feeling impatient to begin the journey back to Konoha.
Hearing voices, Sai looked towards the stairs to see Naruto and Sasuke coming down together. They were talking quietly together and seemed to be paying no attention to their surroundings. Sai was just about to call out to them to let them know where he was sitting when he noticed Sasuke place his fingers lightly on Naruto’s lower back, guiding him to turn towards Sai. Well, apparently one of them was paying attention, Sai thought to himself.
Naruto was grinning as he sat across from Sai and Sasuke sat smirking beside him, close but not touching. Sai looked to see if there was anything different about their behavior… if they were still acting… strange. Both seemed to be in a good mood. Naruto looked extremely happy which was nothing new and Sasuke looked very content which was sort of normal for him. Giving a mental shrug, Sai determined to concentrate on getting the group out of town as soon as possible. One could only stand so much ‘fun.’

Sai kept up a steady rhythm, feeling the air rush past as he jumped from one tree to the next. His leg muscles bunching as he jumped, then extending as he propelled himself along, arms relaxed behind him. His muscles felt warm with the steady pace they had kept throughout the day. It was a good feeling.
He glanced over at his teammates as they sped along with him, occasionally hurling insults at each other as the competitive urge seemed to strike but mostly traveling quietly, focused on making good time. Normal… nice, calm and normal, Sai thought to himself.

“Hey Teme! How ‘bout we start looking for a place to camp for the night?”
Sasuke looked over at Naruto as they continued to jump through the trees. “Sounds like a plan, Dobe.”
“There’s a natural spring near here.” Sai added. “It would make a good place to set up camp for the night.”
Nodding in agreement, they followed Sai away from their previous course and soon found themselves in a clearing very close to a small creek leading away from the natural spring. “Great spot!” Naruto said, as he jumped to the ground. “Hn,” Sasuke added, looking around in approval. They quickly began setting up camp, Sasuke and Sai putting up the tent as Naruto readied a place for the fire before beginning to gather firewood.
After finishing putting up the tent, Sasuke and Sai each took out the food they had brought for themselves. After washing his hands, Sasuke poured the last of his water into a small pot before beginning to prepare the camp foods he had brought along to make a stew. Sai chewed slowly on some dry sticks of jerky as he got out the small packets he had brought along to make tea. Naruto, of course, tossed a couple packs of ramen from his packs before heading to the small creek to wash off the dirt he had accumulated from collecting firewood.
Grabbing the small pot that would be used to heat water, Sai headed towards the spring, not noticing Sasuke’s narrowed gaze following after him.

Approaching Naruto, Sai noticed that he was staring at the water with a ridiculously happy smile on his face. The posture of his body was relaxed and he had apparently forgotten that he was there to wash up before eating.
“Hey dickless, did you forget how to use water?”
Naruto’s head jerked in the direction of Sai’s voice and his face momentarily scrunched up in a frown before once again relaxing into a smile. “Yeah, yeah… whatever you say Sai. Why would I forget anything when there are so many wonderful things to remember?”
“Wonderful things?”
“Yeah… really really wonderful things.” Naruto responded, his smile growing as he laughed quietly.
Sai stared suspiciously at Naruto, beginning to wonder about the sanity of his ‘happy over wonderful things’ friend.
Naruto turned away and pulled his shirt off over his head and shook it out before beginning to scoop water up to pour over his arms. Sai watched impersonally as the water ran down Naruto’s arms and dripped off his hands. Suddenly remembering why he was there in the first place, Sai walked to the edge of the creek and leaned over, filling the small pot with the cool water.
Glancing over at Naruto, Sai froze, arm stretched out over the water. His mind felt suddenly blank as he saw Sasuke standing on the other side of Naruto slightly behind the oblivious blond. Sai had not noticed his approach and the cold glare the Uchiha was giving him almost made him flinch in surprise. What the hell is his problem?
Noticing his stillness, Naruto looked at Sai before quickly following his gaze and jerking his head back around toward Sasuke.
“Teme! Hey, I was just getting ready to head back.” Naruto said, a grin spreading across his face.
Sai felt his body relax as Sasuke’s gaze left him and landed softly on Naruto. There was no other way to describe it. The cold eyes had immediately softened when they turned to Naruto. Sai felt his body begin to tense again, this time in annoyance that he had froze in reaction to Sasuke’s look. What the hell had that look been about anyway?
“Since you were taking so long, I just wondered if you had fallen in or gotten lost Dobe.”
Sai was further annoyed as Naruto bounced up and began following Sasuke back to the camp, Sasuke sending a parting smirk over his shoulder at Sai. The Uchiha was definitely gloating. Only Sai didn’t know what he was gloating about.
A/N I actually planned on ending this chapter differently but it turned out like this. I think the next chapter will have to be a little bit of all 3 POV's. What do you think?
