Just want to apologise for the way I wrote Itachi in the last chapter, I’ve only watched so far in the anime so I don’t really know much about him as a character or what his motivations really are, he’s still just an evil psychopath who murdered his whole clan without batting an eyelash to me so that’s how I'm writing him. *** “Well that was a total waste of both out times,” Kisame said to Itachi as he caught up with the Uchiha and straightened his shark sword where it now rested upon his back, “we didn’t kill your brother and we didn’t get the nine tails, so why did you even drag me here.” “I didn’t drag you anywhere, you followed me,” the elder Uchiha scowled over his back as he jumped from another tree branch, “and you got some practice in with that sword of yours so what are you even complaining about.” Kisame smiled revealing sharp teeth at the memory of those that had been stupid enough to try and follow them when they had made their rather unnecessary retreat. They weren’t ninja anymore, just nameless corpses lying on the forest floor that had fallen victim to his blade. “I can’t wait to see how Madara reacts to this little endeavour; I’ll be telling him it was all your idea.” “It was my idea,” Itachi said slowly, “Madara can act however the hell he wants to,” it was a spiteful whisper and Itachi found that he was grinding his teeth at the thought of the man but stoped when an image flashed through his mind of a boy that looked so like Madara, so like himself except he was covered in blood. I can’t afford to think like that,Itachi reprimanded himself, Sasuke chose to move and protect that blonde monster, though I don’t know why even if the things he said to me are true, about family, about…not hate me anymore. Maybe I should be happy for him; he’s not living in my shadow anymore, not following me around like some revenge obsessed puppy. For once Sasuke is making his own decision and there not for the village or for the clan but for himself and those he cares about. I wanted him to grow up strong but I never thought that would mean he would cut me out. I thought the clan and our name mean t more to him than that, that he valued his family and its honour more than anything. Itachi’s chakra faltered and the bark of the tree branch he launched himself from splintered as he realised something that made his normally impassive cold expression falter and fall away. Sasuke did care about family and the honour of that more than anything, it was just that Itachi really wasn’t his family anymore, those that he had left him behind with were, the ones that were there to pick up his baby brothers broken pieces were who really mattered to the younger Uchiha now. Their happiness and not his all-consuming revenge was now his ultimate goal and even thought Itachi knew that deep down his little brother still despised his very existence he also knew that Sasuke would not risk all that he had now for something that made him feel so hollow and furious inside. If Itachi Uchiha had ever needed another reason to hate the hidden village of Konoha and all those that resided in it he most certainly had one now. “You alright there Itachi?” Kisame shifted the sword on his back a little nervously as he regarded the Uchiha with cautious beady eyes, “because by your expression it looks like you’re planning to kill everything and anything in the immediate vicinity or your about to have a mental breakdown on me,” the shark man offered a wary toothy grin, “can’t decide which I'm more afraid of.” Itachi however wasn’t interested in Kisame or his concerns at all, he was too busy focusing on the molten heat of anger that was filling him so pleasantly and it was all directed toward one sunny individual in particular. It’s that little blonde thing that’s done this, that retched demon child and his idealistic, optimistic views on life is the root of this entire problem and Sasuke risked his life for it, and not for the first time either?! Itachi sneered as he recalled being told the results of Sasuke’s first real mission and the details of his little brothers daring display of camaraderie as he risked his like against a terrible and skilled opponent to save a friend. Yeah terrible, Itachi continued thinking, his train of thought gone from his little brother for just a moment, terrible at doing his job as a weapon. Sasuke was stupid then an lucky, but he should have known better than to throw himself in front of one of MY attacks, I'm not some backwater hidden mist shinobi with a complex, he more than knows what I'm capable of, he’s witnessed it countless times. Another fluctuation of chakra resulting in another wounded tree branch, Maybe, maybe what happened back there then was my fault, Sasuke knows what I'm capable of and I’ve always let him live when I could have easily finished him. Perhaps I'm the one with the complex. I shall have to remedy that the next time we meet, but not before dealing with Naruto, I’ll be doing the world a favour by getting rid of that and then Sasuke will return to his true goal in life, how could he not if I take away his family again. Yes, after I deal with Naruto and maybe the rest of his team Sasuke will return to me. Kisame backed off as he watched a look pass over Itachi’s face that he had never seen before; it was almost gleeful but was edged with such a malicious intent that it had the shark man wishing he was back in his little nook of the horrendous cave that was their current hideout. At least then he would be able to cower under his bed. “Kisame,” it was a slow drawl and the hairs on blue tinted skin rose, “I hope you know this isn’t over, I will need your help later on but for now I have to plan. My foolish little brother surprised me and threw me of guard which proves I can no longer dive in head first when it comes to him,” Itachi turned his coal eyes on the blue man, “can I count on your aid, you will no doubt get to mow down a few more ninja again if you chose to help.” Kisame couldn’t say no, if he did he had no doubt that Itachi would use those accursed eyes on him until he submitted, so with a slight nod of his head Kisame agreed to aid the Uchiha in his future endeavours and suppressed a sigh of relief when the raven turn his gaze back to the direction of travel. Really when Kisame was so worried about the unstable ninja beside him that he didn’t even register the fact that he would be getting to do some serious killing soon you knew something bad was coming on a blood stained horizon. *** “When he wakes up I am going to murder him, and this time he’s going to stay dead,” the infuriated voice of one pink haired konoichi was what awoke Sasuke but he knew better than to announce that fact and draw the pinkette’s attention. “Sakura you should wish I’ll on Sasuke, it’s not every day your teammate comes back from the dead,” Kakashi’s voice was joking and Sasuke just knew that he would have that perverted book in front of his face like always. Kakashi is here and so is Sakura, Sasuke’s muddled brain thought, where is Naruto, I should be hearing him cursing my name along with Sakura. Sasuke took a rather deep breath then and it was because of that, that he became aware of the weight on his chest and he shifted slightly trying to dislodge it only to feel a warm hand tighten around his own. “Hey guys I think maybe he’s coming around,” the voice was startlingly close and the Uchiha couldn’t help but jump which caused the weight on his chest to finally move and he realised that said weight had been Naruto’s head and that the blonde had most likely been listening to his heart. Sasuke ground as Naruto’s movements shifted him and a sudden pain exploded in his shoulder and he began to feel a little nauseous, “I think I'm going to be sick,” he announced in a croaking voice and tried to roll onto his side so he could retch over the edge of the bed he laid on and not all over himself. “It’s alright Sasuke your fine,” Tsunade’s voice sounded from the opposite side of the bed to Naruto and he felt a cool hand on his forehead settle him back down onto the pillow before a gentle yet steady flow of foreign chakra chased the sick feelings away, “you’re going to be feeling a little ill for a while after the amount of chakra Itachi shoved into you, you’re lucky the sheer force of it didn’t cause internal damage to your lung. Do you wanna open your eyes for me, you should be alright now.” Sasuke squinted his eyes tightly before opening them slowly. His lids were heavy and trying to pull him back into sleep and he was tempted to give in to them but he steeled his will and forced them open to blurrily register that he was surrounded by pale green walls of a hospital room with a harsh storm beating against the closed windows and the lights doing their best to create a sense of security at being indoors but they failed miserably when a harsh crack of thunder caused the windows to shudder. Other than the screaming of the wind outside the room was as silent as a grave but the atmosphere was tense, no one knew where to look and no one knew what to say, but as Sasuke shifted he could see the murderous intent etched onto Sakura’s features as well as the bored expression on others faces, except for Naruto, who’s expressive eyes he studiously avoided. However he soon realised that his attempts were short lived as Naruto’s face came to hover over him, his deep blue eyes guarded and his fists clenched in the fabric of the blanket on either side of prone and still rather heavy feeling form. “What the hell you stupid bastard what were you even thinking,” Naruto screamed so loud that Sasuke thought his ears started bleeding, “ANBU? Do you know how fucking dangerous that is, you could have died AGAIN!!” Sasuke wasn’t going to retaliate at first but as the blonde above him continued on and on about how stupid he was at a tone that the Uchiha could not hope to block out he couldn’t help it, the blonde just wouldn’t get out of his face and the spittle he could feel showering him made him lose it. “you’re the one who said you never wanted to see me again, that if I ever dared to utter another word to you, you would beat me to hell and back again,” Sasuke grabbed Naruto’s hand and pulled it away from where it had fisted in his shirt and pushed him away roughly, using the momentum to pull himself up but gave a short shout of pain, his hand flying up to clutch at his shoulder. Tsunade put a chakra infused hand to Sasuke again, “Easy Uchiha, you’re not healed fully yet. Consider it my own little form of punishment there.” Sasuke growled and threw a glare at Tsunade that inspired even her stubbornness to back off before he turned it on Naruto, “I did this for you, and I gave you what you wanted. You should be happy.” “Oh stop being such a drama queen Sasuke,” the blonde shouted throwing his hands in the air, “I would have gotten over it eventually. You forget that you’re the one who holds these tremendous earth shattering grudges, not me.” “Oh so that time you didn’t talk to me or Kakashi for a whole month because we convinced Ichiraku to stop serving you every day so you would eat better wasn’t a grudge?” Sasuke was back to yelling, his glare being washed away by fury, “besides why would you care if I died or not, you’ve clearly got other friend who you could fill my void with since you saw fit to toss me out of your life so casually.” “Am I the only one seeing this starting to go into an unrelenting circle of blame,” Shikamaru murmured from his position leaning against the wall near the door but then he glanced over at a ruffle of pages to see that he wasn’t the only one bored by the monotony of this. But the two arguing didn’t even hear Shikamaru’s attempts to break the rising tension and Naruto was already firing off his next shot at the raven before the Nara had even settled back against the wall. “Jesus Sasuke how did you expect me to act when most of the time you have emotional constipation,” the blonde was back in Sasuke’s face, he would not back down from this, it wasn’t his fault, okay maybe it was a little but his mind refused to acknowledge that particular realisation as his mouth opened again without and he was shouting again without thinking, “One second we’re talking about my relationship problems and the next your kissing me. Honestly Sasuke the fact that you did something that left you so at risk and had some form of real emotional integrity nearly gave me a bloody heart attack!!” “You kissed him?!” “He kissed you?!” “You asked me who else would care for you like that and all I did was give you an answer,” Sasuke gave the exclamations of the two female ninja’s no notice as he entered into a silent death glare battle with the infuriation demon child before him, daring him with his eyes to try and wriggle his way out of that little piece of the past, but Naruto dodged the entire comment by turning to the others in the room and ignoring him, which only served to make Sasuke more angry. “How can you be so calm about this Shika,” Naruto questioned flabbergasted, “I mean sure you’re lazy about everything I know that but I mean come on, even this has to warrant some merit from you. And Sakura why are you just standing there, I thought you were going to murder him.” “well I was waiting until you were done,” ,Sakura said clearing her throat and deciding that she could grill Naruto later for information about the supposed kiss, “it alright though Naruto I can wait my turn, besides I'm kind of enjoying this and it seems I’m learning a lot.” Naruto didn’t miss the slightly scary land calculating look in those mint green eyes but decided he would deal with that later, very much later and turned back to the Nara who was looking like he was about to leave, “ well Shika?” “well you see Naruto, “ began Shikamaru as he pushed himself off the wall and reached up to tighten his pony tail, “I kind of already knew all about Sasuke’s plans, so I'm really not that bothered, I mean assure it was a stupid decision and Uchiha knows I feel that way. Honestly I'm kind of over it.” Kakashi snapped his book shut, breaking of Naruto’s string of stuttering that he had started when the brunette first began his confession, “I knew to and I have to say I agree with Shikamaru on this one. So Naruto why don’t you just thank Sasuke for saving your butt from his brother and Sasuke you apologize for kissing Naruto and then the problem will be solved,” Kakashi motioned to the Nara by the door, “after you.” “Yeah I'm just going to go with them,” Tsunade said a little guiltily as she walked around the bed to the door, “if you need anything Sasuke just call for a nurse,” the Hokage glanced at the other blonde who was staring disbelievingly at the door and the general space around it before she exited herself, closing aforementioned door behind her softly. “So who else’s minds did you decide to put at ease by telling them what you were really planning,” Sakura crossed her arms over her chest and affixed the raven with a cold stare. “If you’re looking at me like that because you feel betrayed or whatever you can stop right now,” Sasuke warned her, “I had to tell Tsunade and Kakashi, I needed permission from both of them before I was even considered and allowed to take the written exam and I told Shikamaru because I needed someone to watch out for Naruto when I was gone as well as help with keeping everyone off my case for a few days so I could make my preparations but he refused on that part. Seems it didn’t really matter through since the idiot decided to make an impromptu trip to Suna and make everyone to worried about him to even notice what I was doing.” “Stop talking about me like I'm not here damn it,” Naruto stamped his foot like a little kid but all it got him was a small smirk from Sasuke and a shifting of eyes from Sakura as the two continued to face off. “So are we done here,” Sasuke challenged Sakura with his eyes, “I’ve given you my reasons for doing what I did, I’ve answered all of your questions. So now if you don’t mind I’d like to try and go back to sleep, as least I’ll be able to forget about my shoulder that way.” Sakura huffed before turning on her heel and leaving the room, however she didn’t close it gently like Tsunade had, she slammed it shut with such a force that it was nearly ripped from its hinges and Sasuke sighed. If the way she had just treated that door was any indication Sasuke was in for one hell of a beating once he was fully healed. Being trained as a medical ninja clearly made her uncomfortable when she thought about attacking a wounded person who by rights she should be trying to save. A heavy awkwardness settled over the room and Naruto shifted from foot to foot. He knew he should leave and give the two of them time apart to sort out everything that had happened and all that they had said to each other but he just couldn’t bring himself to leave the room. He really wished Sakura hadn’t left; his anger had fizzled out as soon as he was alone with the raven and it made him even more annoyed. Anger was so much easier to deal with than awkwardness. He was furious at the Uchiha before him, that was not in doubt but he was also beyond relieved about the fact that he wasn’t six feet under the ground right now rotting and he wanted to find a way to tell Sasuke that without forgiving him. “Naruto,” his own voice whispered softly made Naruto jump more did the thunder from the storm outside ever could, “I-I know I’ve said sorry like a hundred time, when I first…kissed you and then in the note I left you in my will. Is it going to make a difference if I say it again or maybe a hundred more times maybe?” The blonde pursed his lips together and looked up from the floor where he had planted his eyes as soon as Sasuke had started speaking, “I s-said I would forgive you w-when I thought, when I thought you were dying in front of me but now that I think about it I'm not sure.” “It’s alright Naruto, I don’t expect you to forgive me,” Sasuke turned his head to look at the storm, “ I won’t be able to join the ranks of ANBU now, there was no other way to properly hide my identity other than faking my death and I don’t think anyone is going to believe that if I try it again. I'm thinking that I might ask Tsunade to transfer me to another team,” he turned back to Naruto then but wouldn’t meet his eyes, “at least for a little while.” “Sasuke you don’t have to do that,” Naruto moved toward the bed wearily and plopped down on the end next to Sasuke’s feet, “we were a great team, can’t we just go back to what we were like before?” “honestly Naruto I don’t think we can, at least not until I sort out these feeling I have for you in my own head, and you,” the Uchiha stared into blue eyes imploringly, “you need to figure out where we stand with each other now. Whether or not we can be friends again is up to you, I would like it if we remained so but I'm not going to push my feeling onto you. You need to make this decision for you and not for anyone else. Put yourself first for once.” To say the least the blonde was floored. Put himself first? He wasn’t entirely sure he knew how to do that but one thing he was sure of was the fact that he didn’t want Sasuke to request to be put on a different team, for Christ sakes he had only just gotten him back and some insane protective part of himself was sure the Uchiha would do something stupid again if he wasn’t there to keep an eye on him. “Do you really need time away to think you’re feeling over or do you think you could maybe do that and still be part of our team,” Naruto asked, glancing at Sasuke through a few strands of blonde, “since your wounded I don’t think we’ll be going on any super difficult missions anytime soon that you’ll be required to focus on so I'm sure you can think during them?” But maybe, maybe Sasuke wants this time away from me, the blonde couldn’t help the stray thought, but he would say so outright if he did, he wouldn’t give an option or even bother explaining himself, he would just do it…right? It was worded like a question but Sasuke saw it for the plea that it was but he saw the blonde thinking about what he had said and before the idiot could change his mind Sasuke opened his mouth, “are you sure Naruto, I thought the mere sight of me would have been enough to drive you up the wall for a while, all your anger can’t be gone just like that. Are you sick?” The blonde smiled weakly at the ravens attempt to make him laugh and he ran a hand roughly through his messy blonde locks, “oh believe me I'm still angry, there is a part of me that wants to kick you all the way to Suna and back again but then there is this other part that is so way beyond relieved that you’re not actually dead and isn’t quite willing to let you out of its sight yet. Right now that part is winning, or rather beating the other half into submission,” Naruto stood and made to leave but before he exited he turned back the Sasuke, “but who know, tomorrow I might feel totally different so you better be at training so I can kick your arse just in case.” “Hey you forget I'm wounded here and it’s because I saved your life,” Sasuke was mildly amazed and confused at how they had gotten back to the point where they were joking with each other as he stared at the genuine smile the dobe was giving him and watched the relief his friend felt take over more. “That’s no excuse,” Naruto laughed before dropping his eyes again and scuffing his shoe on the floor, “so I’ll see you tomorrow,” he was getting a little annoyed at how well he was getting acquainted with the carpet. “Maybe Naruto,” Sasuke felt guilt wash over him as he snuffed out the small glimmer of hope for a return to normalcy the that the blonde had been holding inside and just like that Naruto’ mask was back in place and he caught a glimpse of hate fighting back before the idiot turned and left, leaving Sasuke with nothing but the rain and thoughts of a tomorrow he dreaded for company. *** AN: so they kind of came to an impasse but there is still tension between them with Naruto not knowing how he should feel about Sasuke’s return from the dead and his “betrayal” as he and Sakura see it. So does Sasuke really want time alone, or was he just doing it to make Naruto ask him to stay? Does that make Naruto selfish in not giving Sasuke what he wants? Do either of them know what they want? Oh my god I don’t even know…or do I? Hehe it’s great to be back working on this fic :D
