Maiko had a plan. She'd been watching them surreptitiously as much as possible. She still didn't know exactly why they weren't admitting their love, but she knew it was mostly about their own hang-ups. She spent the morning in the carriage making plans, and by the time they made it to the fishing village, she knew what she wanted to do.
They checked into the inn, another small one with only one room available to rent. The other four were already rented out. It was just barely past noon when they'd gotten to the village, but they'd explained to her how far it was to the next city and it would be best to just stop. That was fine with her. It certainly helped with her plans.
"So, um, Sakura, since it's so early, how about we go down to the beach for a while? I have sorely missed the water since I left."
"Okay. I don't have a suit or anything, but I can at least watch from the beach." She smiled.
Maiko grinned. "I have an extra one. I dug it out of my bag in the carriage when I found out we were going to be early. Here." She shoved the suit at Sakura and nearly did a dance at the look on her face.
Sakura stared at the…swim suit in her hands. It could not possibly actually be called that. There were…she paused to count…three patches of fabric on the whole thing. The rest was made up of strings. It was in her signature red, but still.
"I'm…not sure it would fit me…" she finished.
"Of course it would! Go on, put it on. I'll get mine on and we can head down there. Come on, it's beautiful out there and I desperately need some sun."
Sakura stared dubiously at the thing for another minute before sighing. Maiko looked too happy at the prospect, so Sakura figured she could do this. Maybe she'd just put her red top over it.
When they emerged from the room, it was to see Kakashi sitting in the corner of the dining room, tea cup in front of him, Icha Icha volume in hand. He glanced up and Sakura grinned. "Going somewhere?"
She thought she heard a catch in his voice. She nodded. "Maiko would like some sun, so I've agreed to go down there with her. You're welcome to join us." She grinned evilly. She knew he couldn't see what she was wearing. She'd pulled her red top and pink skirt over the suit. So, her legs showed, but nothing else.
"You know, I think some sun sounds nice." He paused to throw some money on the table before stowing his book and following them.
When they got down to the beach, they dropped the towels they'd brought from the room, removed their shoes and Sakura glanced over her shoulder at Kakashi before dropping her skirt and taking the top off.
The look on his face was priceless. She was fairly certain there was a bad nosebleed going on under his mask. She winked at him before heading to the water.
She only got about two feet. "What…do you think you're wearing?" Kakashi grabbed her arm and held her back.
She looked up at him, eyebrow raised. "A swimsuit. I had to borrow one of Maiko's, as I didn't think to pack mine. I wasn't expecting to swim."
"That is not a swimsuit. That…that's… patches. With string."
Sakura was valiantly trying to fight both a blush and laughter at the same time. The blush won out when she heard a whistle behind her. The whistle died quickly, however, when Kakashi looked over her shoulder at the whistler. The whole thing was only made worse because it was exactly the same reaction she'd had to the suit in the first place.
She gave an exasperated sigh. "Really, Kakashi. What's the big deal?" But she thought she knew and it warmed her a little, though she tried not to show it.
When he didn't answer, she raised her eyebrow at him. He closed his eye briefly. "I'm at least going with you." He kicked his sandals off, pulled off his gloves, shucked the vest and shirt and paused to remove the bandages from around his ankles. The mask, she noted, stayed firmly in place. As did the headband.
She was having real trouble not laughing by this time. There was no other way to interpret it. Kakashi was jealous.
The water at that point on the shore was very warm and felt really good. Her muscles were aching after all the exercise she'd been doing over the last several days. She felt better back in the swing of things, but even so, it was good to relax. She sat in the surf and looked over at Kakashi who kept his eye trained on her. Then she noticed the sharingan uncovered. "Expecting trouble?"
"With you in that? Yes." He glanced around at the men on the beach openly ogling her. Maiko, he'd noticed, had managed to find a one piece suit that covered everything nicely.
Sakura rolled her eyes. "Really, Kakashi. You act like some guy is going to come up and try to molest me or something."
He gave her a meaningful look before turning away. She nearly growled. "Even if they did, are they shinobi?"
"That's not the point." There were at least three separate men he was already considering punching. And the number was growing swiftly.
"I know you know I can take care of myself. So…" She left it unsaid.
He sighed. "They don't have the right to look at you."
That stopped her. "Oh?"
He shook his head. "No."
She blinked at him a moment. "Okay. Assuming for a moment I believe that they're looking - which I don't - but assuming I did, I'll bite, why?"
He turned both eyes on her, taking in every bit of her from top to bottom. And, thanks to the sharingan, he'd have that image burned into his brain in very very vivid detail for the rest of his life. He sighed. What could he say? If he said, 'because you're mine.' Then what? He couldn't back that up. Because he wasn't allowed to have her. He tried for half-way, "because it is going to kill my sanity."
She looked away from him and out to the ocean, then leaned forward, resting her arms on her knees. "Will it? Does it really bother you? The idea of another man looking at me?"
He could admit that much safely. "Yes. Yes, it does."
She smiled shyly. "Okay. Get my red top?"
He'd never been happier to do something for her. He helped her into it, but did notice that she didn't zip it all the way up. When he raised an eyebrow, she laughed. "I can't leave you too sane…"
He sent up a prayer for help, but it went unanswered. He just shook his head at her. "Let's enjoy the afternoon a bit, hm?"
She nodded and turned back to the water, happier than she could remember being in a long time.
Maiko didn't cheer, but she wanted to. That went even better than she'd hoped. She hadn't been able to hear everything that was said, but she got the gist of it. There was no mistaking the jealousy on Kakashi's face.
She took some time to enjoy herself in the water before trudging back to the beach. "OH! It always wears me out, but it feels sooooo good. And I just love the smell of the salty air."
Sakura smiled at her. "Will you be staying in Port City?"
Maiko nodded. "Yes, for the most part. Hiroshi will need to travel some, but I won't always have to go with him."
"Have…have you met him yet?" Sakura asked.
Maiko stared. "Sure, I have. He's been up to Waves a number of times." She blushed. "He actually asked me before our father's made the treaty. He was going to tell them later the same day the treaty was signed."
Sakura shook her head. "I could never understand politics. My shishou is a hell of a woman for putting up with it."
"Are you planning to follow in her footsteps?"
"Hell no. Kakashi here was almost Hokage for a while." Sakura nodded toward Kakashi.
"I was never confirmed. Thankfully."
Sakura and Maiko laughed. "It's not that bad, really." She shook her head, but Sakura shuddered.
"Better you than me, then." She sighed and glanced up at the sky. "We shouldn't be out her much longer."
"You're right." Maiko stood up and brushed herself off. "Let's head back. After all that, I'm starving."
Kakashi stood. "Stay here. Let me get your skirt."
Sakura rolled her eyes, but didn't argue. She, herself, was a grateful he offered.
Back in the inn, they showered and gathered again in the tea house. "Okay, the innkeeper says there isn't anything between here and Degarashi Port."
"I don't think so, either." Maiko said. "I haven't been through here before, but Hiroshi told me a lot about it."
"I don't remember anything, either, but then again, the last time I was here was eight years ago."
"Well, we'll have to plan to camp, then. Are you okay with that Maiko?"
She looked thoughtful. "Yes, but only if we can rearrange things. Could we take a bit of time in the morning to see if we can shift my bags enough so I can sleep in the carriage again? I hate the thought of taking your mats."
Sakura shook her head. "We really didn't mind."
Maiko gave her a look that told her she knew better. "I promise not to take too long to do it, okay?"
"Whatever you want to do is fine," Kakashi interrupted when Sakura would argue again. He gave her a warning look and Sakura quieted down.
After dinner, Maiko yawned loudly. "Okay, I need rest! Night guys. Sakura, take your time." She winked at her then headed down the hall.
"What was that all about?" Kakashi asked.
"I'm sure I don't know." She turned to him and had to suppress a yawn of her own. "I think the sea air is getting to me."
After checking to make sure they were alone in the dining room, Kakashi pulled his mask down and kissed her thoroughly. "Sleep well."
She stared at him. "Not without you." She swallowed hard, a blush staining her cheeks.
"Me, either. Try anyway." And with a half smile, he pulled the mask back up and disappeared outside.
Sakura sighed and headed to bed. These nights without him were getting to her.
