This is an important chapter for transition. The foreshadowing was a lot of work, especially when I have to go through and reread to ensure that it's cohesive. This fic is time consuming in the extreme because there's so many details. I want it to flow from beginning to end and it's a lot of work making sure that what I've written makes sense all the way through. This whole store is written, but finding mistakes is a tedious job. Hopefully, since this chapter was the hardest so far, things will be a little easier for a while. The next few chapters at least will be.
Chapter 12 Naruto should have known that refusing to see Sasuke for too long would have consequences, but finding out he’d told Shino about what had happened was not what he’d been expecting. The brat had gotten Shino alone long enough to tell him about the kiss and that Naruto had enjoyed it, but neglected to tell him that Naruto had rejected him. Of course Shino had plenty of time to think on it before he confronted Naruto, and had thought up several reasons why Naruto would stay with him out of pity or inability to let go of the past. The worst part was that the little brat had left on a mission right after talking to Shino so Naruto would have to wait to pound him into the ground. All that was left now was to deal with Shino who was pacing like a caged tiger in his small apartment babbling angry epithets under his breath. “He was wrong to tell you. I didn’t want you to know, and no it wasn’t because I was going to see him behind your back. I wanted you to stop worrying about him. I know that you’ve read about what happened before, and I know that you see similarities so you should see how this will end. I will be with you. I’ve made my decision, and he will outgrow this. He’s young and we spent too much time alone together while you and I avoided each other. It was a mistake I couldn’t see myself making at the time because I was trying so hard to stay occupied.” Shino was glaring at him now, but at least he’d stopped pacing. “He said you kissed him.” His voice was low and his eyes were searching Naruto’s face for a lie. He wouldn’t find it. “I did. I admit it was a moment of weakness and took very little for him to get me to do it. It happened and then it was over. I told him I needed some time to get things straight in my head and I’d resume teaching him again in a couple of weeks. Avoiding him for a month was obviously a mistake because he’s taking his anger and jealousy out on you. It’s not fair to you, but you have to be able to see that these are the actions of an angry, petulant child. If you want to prove you are more of a man than he is then you need to stop frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog and talk to me.” “I don’t want you to see him again… ever. You won’t teach him or talk to him ever again. When he comes back you can assign him to someone else.” Shino spoke clearly with an undercurrent of authority that Naruto knew was there from his rank in Anbu, but had never actually witnessed before. It would have been impressive if the words hadn’t angered him so much. He knew why he said it, but it didn’t matter, it was difficult to feel sorry for Shino right then, and Naruto didn’t like feeling like he was being manipulated. No one told him what to do anymore. “I understand why you think it’s okay to make that kind of demand, but it’s not your decision. We aren’t even going to discuss it. I’ve explained myself as much as I’m going to, and if you don’t like it then this is over. I never had to choose before and I don’t plan on doing it now. He is my student and my friend. I will deal with Sasuke the way I think he should be dealt with and you won’t interfere. You don’t tell me what to do, and you don’t tell me how to feel. I will still be his teacher when he gets back, and if I hear of you saying one word to him about any of this you and I will be over. He’s just a boy, and I will not hurt him like I hurt my Sasuke. You are a grown man, and you need to realize that he was trying to hurt you because he’s hurting. How would you feel if it were the other way around?” Shino paled more and more as Naruto spoke and when he was done, he sat shakily at the table. He ran his hands through his hair several times and took off his glasses to rub at his eyes before he slid them back on. Naruto felt bad then. He’d been harsh, maybe too harsh, but he’d needed to stand his ground. Shino would learn to live with this or there would be nothing between them. Naruto wasn’t going to sever a friendship because his lover was jealous. It would just lay the grounds for a bad future, and they had so little time together as it was that Naruto didn’t want things to be left unsaid. He walked over to Shino and ran his fingers through soft chocolate hair and sighed. “This will be hard for you if you don’t let it go. You need to trust me to make my own decisions. You are the only lover I want or will ever want. I’m going to go now. You need time to think about this without us fighting and if I stay that’s all we’ll do.” Shino nodded, and Naruto’s fingers slid out of his hair. He headed for the door and looked back one last time before he slipped through and closed it quietly behind him. He hoped his lover would hear the truth in his words and be able to live with them. Naruto couldn’t see any other way for this to work out. ooOOoo Sasuke returned three days later to find Naruto on the dock by the lake. His feet dangled over the edge and his toes dipped in the water playfully making Sasuke smile, but it slipped away when Naruto’s eyes rose to meet his. “I’m very angry with you.” Naruto said in a neutral tone that was a little confusing. Sasuke had known Naruto would be mad about what he’d done, but he couldn’t help it. He’d waited a month of dark empty days hoping to see sunshine hair and sky blue eyes, but after a whole lot of nothing he’d grown first impatient and then angry. He walked over slowly and sat down next to his Sensei letting his feet hang over the edge and noticed that his toes were several inches away from hitting the water. “You wouldn’t see me. It wasn’t fair and you know it. It was the only thing I could think of to get your attention, and it did so you won’t make me feel guilty for doing it. I got what I wanted.” Naruto glanced over at him noticing the solemn look on Sasuke’s face and couldn’t help a small grin. “Spoken like a spoiled child. He was very angry with me, you know. I haven’t seen him since that day. He’d be furious to know that I’m here with you right now, but he doesn’t get to decide who I spend my time with just like you don’t get to manipulate me into being your lover. I can be your best friend. I’ve only given that title to one other man, but you need to let this go first.” Sasuke looked up at him then and there was something clear and promising in his eyes that let Naruto breathe easier. Sasuke leaned in to him and Naruto pulled him into his arms for a hug. It was a friendly hug, and nothing more. Naruto could feel the sadness in Sasuke, but there was also release. “I don’t think I can stop wanting you, but I don’t want you to avoid me anymore. I’ll leave it alone if you’ll promise not to hide from me anymore.” Naruto nodded against Sasuke before pulling back to look at him. He was so young, too young to tie himself down like this, and Naruto was hopeful that with time he could let this go. He cleared his throat and looked out over the water. Sasuke waited patiently for him to speak, and Naruto was happy to feel Sasuke start to relax. “We can start your training again now if you want. I know you’ve probably got a thousand questions just like always so we can start with that and tomorrow after you’ve rested we can get back to working on your control.” Sasuke was grinning then and practically bouncing. The dock vibrated under them with his excitement and Naruto had to hold in the laugh. “I’ve been doing some research from some of the things I found in your journal. There’s a section where you talk about Itachi. You said specifically that he transferred power to you. He gave it to you so you could protect Sasuke, but you told me that it wasn’t possible. How is it not possible if you’ve done it?” Naruto sighed. Sasuke would never change, but in a way it was kind of a relief to know what to expect. “He didn’t give me Chakra, he gave me power. It wasn’t something physical as much as mental, but that doesn’t really explain it either. It’s like I was blind to what was inside me and he gave me the power to see. I have the Kyuubi inside me, and Sharingan users can see him. They can talk to him and the more powerful Sharingan users can control him. I had never really been in control over him before that, and Itachi gave me the ability to use the kyuubi’s chakra without letting him out so he couldn’t tear me apart. It wasn’t something I was even aware of when Itachi did it. It took a long time to learn how to use the power he gave me, and I was never able to really put it down in words so I didn’t write about it much. He didn’t give me his Chakra, though if he was going to he would probably have done it the same way. Like I’ve said before, it would have killed him.” “Oh… I thought maybe because I’m an Uchiha that maybe you might be able to give what he gave you to me…” Naruto looked over at him and felt himself smile. Sasuke wanted Naruto to give him a part of himself. It was so obvious to him now all of the sudden. Sasuke wanted to have a part of Naruto all to himself, but that wasn’t something he could give. He’d think on it though. This was obviously important to Sasuke, and Sasuke was important to him so if it was at all possible, he’d at least try. He wouldn’t tell Sasuke that though. “I’m sure you have more questions for me, but I’m starving. Let’s head back to town and get something to eat.” Sasuke grinned like the cat who got the cream. “Wont that make Shino angry if we’re seen together?” Naruto just smirked in return. “I guess he’ll just have to deal with it.” ooOOoo That night Naruto lay awake in his bed thinking about what Sasuke had said. He really hadn’t understood exactly what Itachi had given him until years later. It had been a priceless gift that had eventually led him to be the man he was today, but he couldn’t really remember how it had been done. He just remembered Itachi telling him he was going to do it and then it was over. The crow had gone down smooth and fast with no lasting effects, and no interference or changes in his chakra so it wasn’t any kind of solution to Sasuke’s ambition of attaining more chakra, but still it had been a transfer. The seer’s prophesy had made a reference to tying himself to his lover, but would he have to maintain a live chakra connection forever or would it be like the transfer from Itachi. It was a step in the right direction, he could feel it. If he lay very still and blocked out everything else accept his awareness of his own body he could still feel the gift Itachi had given him. It sat just behind the seal. He never told anyone what Itachi had done and they all had assumed that he just learned a way to control Kyuubi’s chakra without being possessed by him, but in truth he never would have had even the slightest chance of locking him away completely while still using the chakra without what Itachi had given him. It was time to go see the toads again. He needed to research and discuss some of the points Sasuke had brought to his attention as well as the prophesy. The Great Toad Sage was known for his prophesies, but he’d always looked on Naruto with sad eyes, and made dry comments about Naruto not having an interesting enough future to predict. When he was young it had made him angry to think his life would be boring. As he’d grown older he’d been more grateful than anything else, and now as he thought back on it he realized it had been a lie. The Great Toad Sage had told him what he needed to hear because the truth back then would have destroyed him. He felt a little guilty for all the sadness he’d brought into the toads lives. They loved him, and had been there for him when he’d needed them most, and he’d hurt and abandoned them. Leaving had been the best thing to do because he’d only hurt them more by staying, but the sad gazes from the Great Toad Sage had started much earlier in his life, and Naruto realized how hard it must have been for him to watch Naruto’s self destruction without being able to do anything about it. Naruto drifted into a fitful, but full sleep for the rest of the night. He dreamed of the world through glass like an endless window as far as he could see. Day blended with night as time moved on the other side of the glass, and Naruto stayed safe and unchanged behind it as he watched everything grow and age and die. He felt the earth shake under his feet and the glass began to ripple and wave before cracks started to appear. The creaks and groans grew louder as the glass lost against the quake. There was an ear piercing shatter as the glass flew apart, and just before Naruto woke up he saw the world shift and split apart, water rushing and crashing, and fire filling the sky. He woke up shaking and covered in a cold sweat that made the dream seem even more real and terrifying. He’d never dreamed like that before. It had never felt more real in the dream than when he woke, and the disorientation made him check his body and then his surrounding for signs that he might not actually be awake. Everything was as it should be and the early morning light coming through the windows helped to ground him to reality once again. He took a long shower and dressed for the day slowly, making a mental note of every sensation. The most prominent of those sensations was making him miss Shino in more than a strictly sexual way. He missed his open affection and the way he would silently watch everything Naruto would do as if he were memorizing everything. There was something so sensual about Shino that made him impatient to see him. Shino’s anger had kept him away after their fight over Sasuke, and he hadn’t shown any signs of giving in or coming to Naruto. It was proof of his age and maturity, but that didn’t bother Naruto as much now as it had before. It was almost endearing, and Naruto decided he’d had enough. He left the Hokage Tower with the intention of hunting down his wayward lover and spending the rest of the day enjoying his company. ooOOoo He found Shino leaning against the wall in the mission room, arms crossed over his chest casually, but still defensively. He was listening to several Shinobi talk loudly about their success on their last mission, and when Shino noticed Naruto, even behind the glasses Naruto could feel those eyes narrow. The relaxed look on his face instantly became pinched and nervous, and his body tightened defensively, making his pose even less approachable. Naruto didn’t care though, Shino could be mad at him all he wanted, he couldn’t stay away any longer. The Shinobi parted as Naruto made his way through, each of them greeting him with variations of “hey Naruto Sama” and “Yo Sensei” It was a bit silly and funny and sad at the same time. It made him miss his own teachers and long for the time in his life when he didn’t know his future, and his only care was impressing them with his skills. He made it to Shino’s side with ease and leaned against the wall next to him listening intently as the conversation went on. His robes were wide at the end of the sleeve and helped to hide his hand as he reached out to brush his fingers along Shino’s thigh. Shino leaned away from the touch slightly so Naruto let his hand fall back to his side, but it wasn’t long before Shino’s body relaxed and let his arms fall as well. The back of Shino’s fingers brushed Naruto’s and he released the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He was forgiven, at least for now. The mission room slowly emptied as everyone gathered their missions and went on their way. Shino had the day off according to the young Chunin behind the desk as she fought against Kikaichu trying to sneak anything they could get a hold of off the desk. Naruto got tired of the game and the glares the girl was sending toward his lover so when no one was looking he grabbed Shino by the hand and drug him out into the street and up to the rooftops. They made their way across town faster without taking the streets and ended up in front of a bath house. Shino just gave Naruto a look that said he knew what Naruto was up to and it wasn’t going to happen. Naruto ignored it as he led the way through the doors. He asked for a private room with adjoining spring. The needed to talk and relaxing in the hot water would help Shino loosen up. Naruto took a quick shower followed by Shino before they walked out to the spring. Each of them modestly took their towels off while surreptitiously sneaking glances at each other. Naruto grinned, but didn’t let Shino see it when he slid into the water. They sat across from each other letting the hot water relax their muscles and tame the anxiety and frustration between them. Naruto spoke first since Shino’s stubbornness was setting new records. “I need to go away for a while. The Toad Sage can help me figure things out and maybe piece together the puzzle of a riddle for me. I need you to forgive me. We’re only wasting time like this. I can’t keep playing these games with you, and I’m tired of you always trying to make me the bad guy. Either you learn to trust me and accept the way I am or we have to make this separation permanent.” Shino looked at Naruto with glassy eyes filled with anger and hurt. “So you want me to forgive you just so you can go off alone for who knows how long. Why are we even doing this? Why are you still hanging on? I’m just a replacement; I’ll never be him no matter how much I want to be. Why did you even come back in the first place, and why did you KISS HIM?” Shino was shaking with adrenalin and Naruto could tell he wanted to hurt him. It didn’t matter if he did though, Naruto would suffer through it. He kept forgetting how young Shino was and how second best he had to be feeling all the time, trying to measure up to the first Shino’s legacy of love. Naruto was making so many mistakes when he’d been so sure his experience would lead him better. “Just hit me, get it over with so we can move on… please Shino…” But Shino just sat there looking lost and helpless and Naruto couldn’t help himself, he reached out and pulled Shino into his lap. He held him so tight, unable to let go and grateful that Shino was holding him back and not pulling away. The sex was instinctual and so very easy between them. Naruto did all the work, holding him against his chest and whispering that nothing could compare to this. That he’d only done it to prove to a boy that nothing would make him waver. He’d never give this up, never give up any of what was between them. Shino kissed him to make him stop. The words were too much as they moved together. Naruto drew it out. He made long slow strokes into Shino and held him tight to keep him from gaining control. Shino’s whole body was at his command. He was so lost that Naruto almost regretted staying with him, doing this to him. Shino was so unhealthy emotionally when they were together. How he felt bordered on obsession, but Naruto was just as obsessed, and the thought of denying himself this hunger… this passion… this longing. Unthinkable.
