every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now
I’ve been raising up my hands
drive another nail in
just what GOD needs one more victim
every day I crucify myself
nothing I do is good enough for you
and my HEART is sick of being in chains
you’re just an empty cage kid if you kill the bird
please be save me I CRY

Chapter XIII There Is No Life Without Discovery
“Is that all you can do, gaki?” Neji growled in frustration, not used to the lack of praise during a training-session. Had he really become so accustomed to something as inadequate as admiration that he now felt upset when it was missing when in fact the snide remarks were only intent to make him push his limits further, make him discover his true limitations. Years of intense training, only to prove that it wasn’t enough for Akatsuki at least. He perfectly understood now why the group of missing-nin – it still felt alien to consider himself part of it – were considered so dangerous. Still beatable, as was any shinobi but all had earned their marks in their own troubled pasts.
In these past three months, he had never felt more insufficient and insecure about his fighting-skills. For the first time in his life, he was constantly surrounded by exceptional shinobi, no longer having weak ones to look down on and establish the difference in skill. Now he was the weakest. It felt horrible...
Kisame grinned, exposing his sharp teeth and hefted Samehada on his shoulder. The little Hyūga was clearly having an intense moment of doubt. Now they would have to wait and see if he would lash out in fury, inevitably making many mistakes or acknowledge his weak points and approach any of them for training. He was talented and he had an exceptional potential but his village had failed to bring it out, deeming his current abilities enough.
“We’ll continue training tomorrow. Get some rest.” The little Hyūga’s eyes narrowed but Kisame’s smile only grew. He would understand soon and then he would grow and take his rightful place in Akatsuki. No one had ever said it would be easy though.
“Neji.” The voice was easily recognized and both looked up to see Itachi entering the large hall. He had been trained by Madara these past months since he was the only other person in the world to have an extensive knowledge of the Mangekyō Sharingan. Their training-sessions would start in the wee hours of morning and after an intense day, they would retreat to their room, only to fall asleep the moment they settled down in bed.
Kisame was aware how much time (awake at least) they had been able to spend together and walked towards the door, giving the lovers some much-needed private time. Passing Neji, he looked at him and grinned a last time, something Neji had quickly recognized as his trademark expression.
“A bit more work on your genjutsu and you’re ready for your first mission.” Neji’s mouth fell open a bit, the statement completely contradicting his earlier though-processes.
Itachi smirked at Neji’s reaction. He had easily picked up on Neji’s self-doubting but hadn’t pressed him into talking about it, reasoning that if he wasn’t ready to voice his thoughts, he wasn’t meant to hear them just yet. He trusted Neji to trust him in turn so there was no need to use force, especially in the relationship they shared. A relationship that they had given far too little attention lately but tonight they would redeem that. He had been given orders by Madara about his first mission with Kisame. They would leave next week so that meant he had the next four days to spend with Neji – Madara had decided to let them indulge for a short while, pausing Neji’s training for a few days.
Walking over to Neji, he stopped in front of him and wrapped his arms tightly around him. It had become a welcomed habit to feel Neji’s presence next to him in bed before falling asleep or waking up with him in his arms but he would be lying if he said he hadn’t missed other physical aspects. “We have the next few days off.” Neji jerked his head up and his body sagged in relief. The training here was incredibly harsh and taxing on his body, nearly incomparable to Gai-sensei’s. And if it weren’t for Kisame’s and Deidara’s belittling remarks, he might have been able to notice his developed skills. “Let’s get something to eat in the village nearby.”
“Shower first.” Neji’s voice was muffled since he had buried his head against Itachi’s chest and Itachi stroked his hair which was unusually untidy for once. They walked back to their room and once the door was safely locked, Neji got out of his dirty clothes with a sigh of relief. Even though he was tired, he looked forward to spending the night out with Itachi and the thought of being able to laze around for the next few days had never seemed more appealing, even for someone so diligent when it came to training. He noticed Itachi getting out of his own clothes and bit his lip as he saw more and more of that beautiful body.
They hadn’t been able to spend a lot of time in each other’s company here at Akatsuki’s lair but it had given Neji the opportunity to slowly become accustomed to living together with Itachi and he would no longer immediately jump to the conclusion that when Itachi got out of his clothes, he would want to have sex. Not that he was averse to having sex with him, far from it even but they still spent a whole lot more time together than when they were still in Konoha and it did take some adjusting to the new situation. But had he regretted following Itachi to Akatsuki in the past three months? He could honestly say he hadn’t which surprised him since he had never doubted his own skills as much as when he had been here.
Itachi grabbed his hand and pulled him to the bathroom, into the shower-stall. He turned on the water and closed his eyes as warm water washed away the dirt and grime. Lips suddenly connected to his and he enthusiastically moved his mouth along, only now realizing how much he had missed this. He pressed his body closer, already feeling the first sparks of arousal as his cock rubbed against Itachi’s own hardening one, hands kneading his strained muscles while rubbing the dirt of his skin, uncovering his pale skin littered with bruises and scraped wounds. The moment Itachi heard him hissing in pain, he broke the kiss to rove his eyes over his body, minutely taking in every peculiarity.
“You’re hurt.” Neji scoffed since both knew he’d had far more severe wounds and had been fine. And a glance at Itachi’s body showed he wasn’t in any better condition.
“As are you,” he said slowly, a frown marring his face. A loud rumbling filled the little stall and Neji’s eyes grew as he looked at his stomach in horror.
“And you’re hungry.” Itachi didn’t even try to disguise the laughter in his tone and grabbed the sponge, intent on getting them both clean and dressed as soon as possible to take care of Neji’s little problem. “Let’s go eat.”
[-]
“What mission did Madara give you?” Neji asked softly. For the first time since abandoning Konoha, they had gone out into town and it was excruciatingly uncomfortable. Now he no longer had to worry about a curse-seal brandished on his forehead (even if he had always been careful to hide it) but he was acutely aware of the hitai-ate hanging around his neck, a slashed symbol indicating that he and Itachi were missing-nin.
“No one cares. They only do in shinobi-villages.” Itachi wrapped an arm around his shoulder despite Neji’s squirming and forced him to stay seated next to him and not be embarrassed that the other occupants of the little restaurant could see that they were missing-nin and also a homosexual couple; already two years had been wasted with them pretending to be something they weren’t and now that they had defected Konoha only to be together, he would be damned if he held up this pretence any longer. “Assassination. Some man in Kirigakure that has been a nuisance for Akatsuki,” he whispered in Neji’s ear as if seducing his lover – even if no one cared, it didn’t mean they should abandon any caution.
While talking, he fixated his eyes on the two young girls waiting at the restaurant, their gazes on them and hurriedly whispering to each other with flustered cheeks and smiles on their lips. Neji, who felt he hadn’t Itachi’s whole attention, turned his head and snarled as he saw the girls, elbowing his boyfriend in his stomach. If Itachi had given himself the right to be possessive when it came to him, then it also went the other way around.
“Do you mind!?” Itachi looked at him with a frown.
“I didn’t like the way they were staring at you,” he said simply.
“And I don’t like you staring at them.”
“I was glaring.”
“You were leering!”
“I love you.” The sudden turn in their conversation made Neji splutter and he felt blood rising to his cheeks. Itachi had never said it with others in relative hearing distance. He sighed loudly but sidled closer to Itachi’s side, not willing to say the words in public. But sometimes action spoke louder than words, didn’t it?
“When are you leaving for the mission?” The thought of being alone in Akatsuki’s lair and constantly being subjected to Deidara’s patronizing ways scared him more than he could readily admit. And part of him was envious. The last time he had spent months only training and not going on missions was when he was preparing for the first Chūnin- exams, now five years ago. He missed that rush of adrenaline that only came when having an enemy in front of you, both waiting to see who would attack first, not knowing if you were going to make it out alive. His fourteen-year old self would have been disgusted with the thought of flirting with death but his two years in ANBU Core had made quite an impression.
“Next week. You and Deidara are leaving for a mission soon too.” Neji’s eyes widened in surprise. The prospect of a mission at last was thrilling but it was also laced with incredible doubt. How he had been treated made him question if they honestly trusted his talents but it made him question himself even more. Was he ready for the one mission that would undoubtedly determine his future in Akatsuki and of his life itself? If he failed, he and Itachi would have eloped for nothing.
Itachi decided not to say much more, lest he made Neji even more anxious. All the worlds in the world couldn’t change the simple fact that Neji had to battle this one out on himself and he could only watch and hope that everything would turn out for the best. But after having been his partner in ANBU Core for nearly two years, he was acutely aware of what Neji was able of and it was more than enough to handle a mission for Akatsuki. Yes, Madara demanded much more than Konoha ever had but both he and Neji had long since surpassed their former village’s demands. Their food was placed in front of them and Itachi removed his arm from around Neji’s shoulder. Both picked up their chopsticks and steaming cups of miso soup and started eating.
“That Deidara can be highly annoying,” Neji suddenly muttered. Itachi glanced at him, his mouth corners turning upwards.
“So I’ve seen.”
[-]
“Oj, Neji! Get up, we have to go train,” Deidara yelled, slamming the door with his hand for emphasis. Neji was already strapping on his weapon-pouch and banged the door in return.
“I’m coming!” He turned to Itachi who was getting dressed and getting ready to leave for his mission with Kisame. He would be gone for two weeks. Swiftly walking towards him, he wrapped his arms around his neck and gave him a deep kiss. “Be careful.” Itachi nodded and pulled him minutely closer, their bodies fully touching.
“You too.” He stroked Neji’s back before releasing him and finishing getting dressed. Neji walked out of the room without once looking back and storming towards the training-room where Deidara would already be waiting. It was the first time he looked forward to it and only because it would be the perfect distraction from Itachi’s leaving.
“Glad you finally decided to grace me with your presence,” Deidara chuckled sarcastically. Neji only lifted his middle-finger, something he had unconsciously adopted from Kisame.
“Didn’t know you were one for useless conversation.”
“And I didn’t know you were so loud during sex. That Uchiha must be a beast in bed to have you scream like a little girl.” This banter had quickly become one of their habits before their spars and usually, Neji went along with it because he didn’t want Deidara to become too cocky and feel like he was his superior but this remark made him narrow his eyes and thoroughly search his partner’s face to see if it had been said in good humour or if he had really heard something he wasn’t supposed to. He relaxed a bit as Deidara didn’t expect a snappy retort from him, indicating that his comment wasn’t based on any factual knowledge.
“So, you ready?” Neji settled in a starting position, silently activating his Byakugan. With Deidara and his extensive use of minuscule clay-bombs that could do enough damage to kill him, his Kekkei Genkai had proven to be indispensable although he had been forced to learn and use decisively more long-ranged attacks. “Remember, avoid them and don’t stay in one spot.” Neji grumbled but prepared himself to jump away as soon as Deidara would start attacking. He could see Deidara smirking and reaching into his pocket, already having an impressive arsenal ready. It was going to be a long few hours.
He jumped away as he saw the first one approaching, jumping off against the wall to avoid another. The first time they had done this, he had slumped down on the floor with his head spinning and feeling nauseous. If Kisame hadn’t dragged him way at the last second, a strayed bomb would have meant the end for him. Now he was in much better control of his movements and no longer made unnecessary ones, each immediately taking him to another temporary safe spot. His Byakugan showed that someone was standing in the door portal but with Deidara running around the room, he couldn’t focus long enough to see who it was. He ducked his head and made a sharp move to the right, a bomb taking out a large chunk of wall where he had been a second ago.
Deidara stopped his attacks and Neji landed right next to him. A hand firmly clapped his shoulder.
“Well done. I wouldn’t have thought it possible but you’ve actually gotten better.” Neji slapped the hand away and gave Deidara a sneering smile.
“And you’ve gotten slower. Don’t let my progress slow you down.” He turned to the door and saw that Madara had been watching them and was now walking over.
“You’re leaving for an observation-mission in two days. I’ll let you know the exact details right before you leave. And Neji-kun, don’t disappoint me and Itachi.” The last words felt like someone had punched Neji in the stomach although he couldn’t deny how true they were. If he disappointed them, it would be over for him. He straightened his shoulders in determination, knowing why he had come here in the first place and that served to be enough motivation to look forward to this mission with vigour. He wouldn’t disappoint but exceed. He did it before so he could do it again and the past months he had spent training here showed that while he hadn’t reached the absolute limit of his skills, he could hold himself in battle against any member of Akatsuki by now.
“Can’t wait,” he simply said. He nodded to Deidara and they each moved to an end of the large hall, preparing themselves for another fight.
Madara looked at Neji with satisfaction and went back to his private quarters. Itachi had been more than right about him in saying that he was just like him. What another great asset to Akatsuki.
[-]
Neji wearily blinked his eyes after having had his Kekkei Genkai activated for more than four hours. Their mission had been solely observation and he guessed that Madara wanted to see just how useful the Byakugan could be for Akatsuki, choosing to remain ignorant about the fact that he was the only Byakugan-user to have ever lived to be able to see such great distances when activated. But even then, if it didn’t help further Akatsuki’s goals, he was useless. Deidara patted his shoulder in a rare display of praise and got up from his crouched position, grumbling loudly about the utter stupidity of this mission. He hadn’t (forcibly) joined Akatsuki to just sit around for three days straight, only to now leave and report back.
When Madara had first told him about their mission’s itinerary, he had thrown a fit of rage, unable to see how this would test Neji’s loyalty to their band of vagabonds and why he had to come along. Madara had only looked at him but it had proven more than sufficient to stop his screaming and had patiently explained it to him, a rarity in itself. More often than not, they would be send off without having the faintest clue of the reasoning behind the mission. Neji was spying on Jiraiya, one of the three great Sannin and currently residing in Konohagakure.
Deciding to give Neji’s deducting skills a little credit, Deidara knew Neji was aware that the man he was spying on was one of the biggest hurdles Akatsuki needed to overcome to reach Uzumaki Naruto, a personal friend of his. And yet, here he was, helping them find out his weak spots other than women. Deidara looked around, knowing that whatever he looked for would be impossible to detect. Zetsu had always been excellent in disguising himself. Madara had sent him after them to make sure Neji wasn’t using his Byakugan only to give them false information. If they returned to their hide-out and Neji hadn’t been lying to them, Deidara knew he would instantly start respecting him more. Not many people would be prepared to betray a loved one so easily.
“Let’s go,” he grunted. Neji got up and diligently followed Deidara glad to finally be away from Konoha. The past few days had been very taxing on him because he couldn’t possibly sleep whilst knowing his former loyalties lay painfully close by and also that they were very close to the village’s walls. Suppressing his chakra was easy enough but the paranoia that they be caught was always in the front of his thoughts.
“We have company,” he heard Deidara say. Neji closed his eyes briefly, not wanting to believe that after spending three whole days here, they would be caught while moving away from Konoha.
“What do we do?” Deidara mulled over the question in his head. His hands were itching, ready to play but he could see the fatigue on his partner’s face and as much as he hated it, he couldn’t lure someone into a fight when Neji wasn’t in any condition to fight. He was prone to recklessness but not stupidity. He beckoned his head to the right and Neji followed immediately. Deidara looked back, focusing a bit closer on their nearby company and chuckled as he sensed their chakra. Weak, so weak. He guessed it were three Genin and their sensei. He stopped abruptly and Neji landed neatly next to him on the thick branch, his eyes showing his confusion.
“Don’t you think it’s time your village knows who you’ve pledged allegiance to? Kind of cruel to keep them in the dark.” Neji froze as the words settled in. Yet another confrontation he wasn’t willing to face just yet. Looking at Deidara, he knew any arguments were useless. And this day had been coming, it was inevitable. Deidara cheekily grinned and dragged him back from where they came.
“Just going to say hello, no killing of Genin or anything. But let that face of yours be seen.” Neji’s heart rate increased dramatically until he feared his ribs might fracture under the pressure. He recognized that chakra-signature. Deidara leaped off a tree, onto a small clearing in the forest and dragging Neji with him. They saw the three Genin stare at them with a mixture of fear and curiosity for the strangers.
“Neji?” Chōji hesitantly said, hoping that his vision was betraying him. He automatically stepped closer to get a better look until he realized the danger of his moves and forced his body to stop. Where was his curse-seal? Why was he wearing an Akatsuki-cloak? He started shaking his head, muttering, “no” over and over again. White eyes stared back at him and he knew he sadly was right. Neji and Itachi had joined Akatsuki, Konohagakure’s greatest enemy. “How could you? How could you do this to Shikamaru, to Naruto, to everyone?” A strange feeling of satisfaction overtook him at the pain on Neji’s face. At least he cared enough to be hurt by his words.
Deidara, openly laughing at the Jounin’s misery, felt he had more than succeeded in his little plan and yanked Neji away from everything he had once cared about.
[-]
Shikamaru angrily clenched his fist and stomped it into the wall, the wood breaking under the harsh contact. “How could they do that!? How the fuck could they do that!?”
Kiba, Lee and Chōji stared at him, at his unusually emotional reaction but then again, his best friend had betrayed him in the worst way possible by joining the organization that had killed his beloved sensei. Chōji had come running into Konoha and immediately went to find his friends, not knowing what else to do with the information. He couldn’t bear to face their Hokage alone but had he had any mind, he would have known his friends would take to the news equally as bad. His friend who he had known since their days in the Academy, had always been very calm because of his laziness but he now sat and looked at Shikamaru and he was petrified. The pure, unbridled rage rolling off him was unlike anything he had ever seen and he wished he never had. If even Shikamaru had this reaction, he didn’t even want to imagine their Hokage’s who was known for her terrible outbursts of anger.
“He just stood there!? Chōji, answer me!” Shikamaru’s eyes were glazed over and it was as if a whole new person had appeared.
“Y-yeah but his curse-seal... It wasn’t there. His hitai-ate was hanging around his neck and his forehead was... There was nothing.” Chōji had of course seen it during the first Chūnin-exams and Shikamaru had later on filled him in on all the details. He clearly remembered Shikamaru’s sad expression as he told how it couldn’t be removed, forever keeping Neji under his family’s yoke. And yet he hadn’t noticed the single trace of a curse-seal. Shikamaru sagged down in his seat and looked at him exhausted.
“Akatsuki. They found a way to remove it. So that was Itachi’s plan,” he mumbled more to himself. He rubbed his forehead, his mind throwing every little signal at him that could have given Itachi’s and Neji’s plan away. He should have known, he should have. He had been so relieved when the retrieval-mission Hinata had been sent on had been a failure but now, after what Chōji had told him, he could no longer say of he still saw it as such. “Go tell Tsunade-sama.” He abruptly stood up, shaking the cups on the table. Lee and Kiba still sat there, unable to say something since Chōji’s arrival. They would have to inform their other friends. Kiba wished he hadn’t heard it at all because his future wife would be heartbroken by the news. How could Neji do something so selfish?
[-]
Neji walked behind Deidara into Madara’s room and he was relieved to see Itachi sitting there, free of any wounds. He went to stand next to him and an arm slipped around his waist.
Madara smirked at the display of affection between them, surprised that something as fruitless as love could push two people to go as far is needed to stay together. He never had been one for petty emotions as love. But if it meant having two talented shinobi join his organization, he gladly allowed it between them.
“Both have proven your worth. So, as promised, you are now officially a part of Akatsuki.” He retrieved a little sachet from his cloak and took two rings out. “Neji, this is for you. Wear it at all times. I’ll explain why at a later time.” Neji stepped forward and took the ring, looking at it closely. A simple band with a large circle on top, displaying 三 on an orange background. Three... Curious about its meaning and usage, he looked at Madara who grinned back at him.
“You’ll know soon enough. Itachi.” Itachi grabbed his own ring and immediately slipped it onto his finger, Neji following suit. He glanced over to see Itachi’s ring had a red background with appropriately 朱 on it, the kanji for scarlet.
“Welcome to Akatsuki. Practice-time is over.”
[-]
Tsunade focused on her breathing so she wouldn’t start crying in front of the many people in her office, most of them furious or miserable themselves. She was really trying to keep Konoha safe but she was running out of ways to do so. Especially with her own former subordinates working against her. Uchiha Itachi and Hyūga Neji had joined Konohagakure’s greatest enemy and with their knowledge, her village could quickly be brought to its knees, regardless if it were only eight people attacking them. She had no other option than have them be hunted down, just as the other members of Akatsuki.
“Put them in the Bingo-Book. Have every ANBU possible looking for them.” Everyone in the room knew what it meant if someone was added to that list of S-Rank criminals. No chance of retribution, of mercy. They were to be killed on sight.
Sasuke, whose eyes were as wide as humanly possible and had the Sharingan spinning raced to her desk, slamming his hand down. “Not my brother. He shouldn’t have to pay for that Hyūga’s stupidity.” A bitter laugh made him snap his neck towards the source of the sound.
“You’re a fool, Sasuke. Your brother is as much at fault as Neji. Both deserve to be in the Bingo-Book.” Tsunade cringed as she heard Shikamaru basically wishing Neji dead after begging her to let him live just three months ago, right after their defection.
“Don’t expect me to believe that shit about them loving each other. My brother was used.”
Shikamaru kept shaking his head. “Your brother was the one who suggested they go to Akatsuki. That was his big plan to keep Neji with him and now I know why Neji decided to defect. Because the bastard actually was going to live.” Sasuke’s nose lids flared in fury but instead of attacking Shikamaru, he stormed out of the room.
“Everyone, get out.” Tsunade’s tired voice was still loud enough to be heard by everyone present and they all walked out. The two greatest shinobi of both their clan and now as their enemy. Konoha was crumbling under her feet.

“Three years. Three whole years,” Neji whispered, not quite able to believe it. They had both managed to survive all the perilous missions Madara threw at them and still been able to be together in every sense of the word.
“I love you,” Itachi breathed straight into his ear, making Neji shudder.
Thank you for reading and reviewing.
Jade Rose: Shikamaru is a man that certainly deserves respect, regardless that he is completely fictional. And as you can tell, I’m not a fan of the majority of parental figures in Naruto. Thank you very much for reviewing.
AkatsukiYaoi: Glad you seem to enjoy it so vigorously. XD
