Chapter Twelve
“Open your eyes.”
Naruto looked up, seeing Kyuubi staring at him through the bars. “Yeah?” Naruto questioned.
“You’re giving up, are you?”
“No! I can’t give up while my daughter’s still out there!”
“Then tell me, why have you been asleep in a hospital bed for the better part of a week?”
The blonde stared at Kyuubi for a moment before saying, “I haven’t…”
Kyuubi chuckled before answering, “We got back to Konoha just before you passed out. While you’ve been sleeping, I’ve been paying attention to our surroundings.”
“And?”
“Mahina’s been found.”
Naruto’s eyes widened, his heart leaping to his chest. “Really? Where? Is she safe? Is she being taken good care of?” Naruto questioned.
It was times like this that Kyuubi found himself being entertained. “Yes, she’s safe. She’s in Suna right now with the former Ichibi Jinchuuriki and his siblings.” Kyuubi answered. “Apparently she’s been doing some talking about that Hiro character.”
“Impossible. She told me that she sent him away.”
“Well, apparently she had a dream that made her wet the bed and she took your advice. She drew what she had dreamt and let Kankuro see. He was, needless to say, disturbed by what he saw and let Gaara and their sister see as well. Gaara recently sent a scroll to the old woman containing Mahina’s drawings.” Kyuubi commented. “Now, I suggest you wake your ass up right now so you can get her.”
Naruto slowly opened his eyes, taking in his surroundings just as Sakura came into his hospital room. “Naruto, you’re awake!” Sakura said with a surprised look. “Hold on, let me get a medic.”
“Sakura… where’s Mahina?” Naruto whispered. “Is she okay?”
“She’s fine. She’s in Suna right now with Lord Kazekage.” Sakura answered gently. “Okay, I’m going to let Lady Tsunade know that you’re awake. She’s got something that you need to see.”
“From Mahina?”
Sakura nodded grimly before answering, “Naruto, she drew something rather disturbing. Very few people have seen it and to be perfectly honest, the Council’s yelling for Mahina to never come back to Konoha.”
Never in his entire life could Naruto remember ever being so furious. Despite Sakura’s protests, he had grabbed his newly washed and folded clothes before getting dressed. “I’ll deal with getting yelled at later.” Naruto told the pink haired kunoichi before jumping from his hospital window.
By the time he reached where the Council and Tsunade were without a doubt talking, he was shaking with anger. What had his daughter done to deserve her citizenship in Konoha being threatened? Did those idiots not see that if she left, he would leave as well? She was just too young to be taking care of herself. “Naruto! You should be in bed resting!” Tsunade scolded.
“I’m fine. I heard that my daughter had been found.”
“She’s in Suna.” Tsunade answered patiently. “Naruto, please go back and rest.”
“No, I heard that there was some kind of problem and I’m her legal guardian. I think I deserve to know what in the hell is going on.” Naruto said stubbornly. “Now, what’s going on?”
The blonde haired man ignored the Council’s comments about how if this was how the future Hokage was going to act, then they might as well consider a new replacement. “If my daughter gets kicked out, then you’re going to have to.” Naruto snarled. “There is no way in hell I’m letting her be on her own. As soon as this bullshit gets taken care of, I’m going straight to Suna and I’m bringing her back.”
“Naruto, look at these pictures.”
Naruto was silent as he looked through the pictures, carefully studying each one of them. The pictures were clearly of Jinchuuriki and their fates. He paused when he saw the picture of him, understanding its meaning. When he saw the final picture, he felt his heart stop. She had seen a warning in her dream and had drawn it in an attempt for her voice to be heard once again.
Something bad was coming their way.
“Clearly, Naruto-sama, the girl is hinting that she wishes for Konoha as well as the other main countries to be-”
“Shut up.” Naruto said softly. “You don’t know my daughter. From the moment you discovered that she cowered from others other than me, you’ve been against her. She isn’t threatening anybody, she’s trying to warn everybody.”
She had known for sure that Naruto would put two and two together. Gaara had expressed a concern about the girl’s drawings, but hadn’t felt that they were threatening. “Lord Kazekage doesn’t feel that they’re a direct threat, but a warning. Somehow, somebody else can do the same thing that Mahina can. If that’s the case, then she’s safer in Konoha than anywhere else.”
“Lady Hokage!”
“Mahina’s citizenship in Konoha will not be terminated. If you expect Naruto to stay in Konoha as well, then I suggest you pull your heads out of your asses and let Mahina stay here.”
Naruto mentally smirked as he looked around at the Council, seeing that they knew they had been beaten. They knew that they were safer with Naruto around and that he would -and could- easily take up residence in another village. “Now, if we’re done playing this stupid game, I’m going to get my daughter.” Naruto said as he stood up. “I’ll be back in about a week and a half.”
The sound of rain falling gently pounded on the window, drawing Mahina from her bed. Silently, she slipped out of her bedroom and went outside, uncaring that she was in her pajamas. “I guess that I’m not the only one that wanted to stand out in the rain,” she heard Gaara comment.
Mahina spun around, her gentle blue eyes staring at him with wonder. “I like the rain. Daddy says that it rains when an angel cries because people are being naughty.” Mahina said softly.
“Sounds like Naruto says a lot of things to help you.” Gaara commented lightly.
“Uh huh. Hiro says that he’s lying and you are too.”
Gaara frowned faintly before asking, “About what?”
“Everything. He says that I’m just gonna be used to scare people and that you’re gonna kill me.”
“Why would I kill you?” Gaara questioned.
Mahina was silent for a moment before looking at him, tears gathering in her eyes. “Cause you killed someone like me before.” Mahina answered as she began to cry. “I don’t wanna die. I wanna be a kunoichi and protect Daddy and everybody else.”
Gaara looked at the little girl, seeing the sorrow in her eyes. He didn’t say anything as he picked her up, gently rocking her in his arms. What in the hell was going on in the kid’s head that was making her think such things? “Mahina, I want you to listen to me very carefully, okay?” Gaara said softly, pausing for a moment while Mahina nodded. “Yes, I did kill some people, but I will not kill you. I used to be sick, but now I’m better. You’re safe because I’m better. Right now, Hiro might be the one that’s sick and he’s hurting you, but you need to make Hiro go away again until he’s better.”
“How?” came a muffled question.
“Tell him to leave. If you tell him to, he will go away.”
“Promise?”
“Sure. Now come on, let’s get inside before you get sick. After all, Naruto’s coming to get you in a couple of days.”
Mahina was silent as she held onto Naruto’s jacket, rubbing her cheek against the fabric. She knew that he’d be coming today, Kankuro had told her. “Jacket down please.” Temari said with a soft smile.
The little girl put the jacket on her lap, feeling Temari put her hair into a ponytail. “You look adorable.” Temari complimented when she finished getting the little girl ready for the day.
“Temari, what if Daddy decides that he doesn’t want me to go home?” Mahina questioned, her clear eyes questioning.
“Why would he think that?” Temari questioned.
“Cause he always knows when I do something that I’m not supposed to. He’ll know that I tried to help the monsters get away from the bad people.”
Temari was silent as she hugged the little girl, wondering where the little girl would get the idea that Naruto wouldn’t want her. “Look, your daddy loves you very much and I highly doubt that he’d be mad that you tried to help the monsters.”
“Ichibi was from around here.”
A chill went down Temari’s spine as she remembered the one-tailed demon. He had brought such terror to Suna, even when inside of Gaara. People could bitch and complain all they wanted about the friends and family that they had lost because of Ichibi, but the older members of Suna had no right to continue with their beliefs that Gaara was a monster. Could they not see that Gaara had been the first victim? He had been the one that had suffered the most, unable to sleep because of the knowledge that if he did, Shukaku would take over. “Yeah, he was.” Temari answered gently. “Don’t worry, Mahina, your daddy won’t get mad. It’s good to help others, even if they are the monsters.”
The little girl nodded before hugging Temari tightly. “I’m gonna go play outside.” Mahina said with a bright smile.
“Okay. Don’t get too dirty.”
“Got it!”
Temari watched as the little girl quickly put on her shoes and ran outside, her soft blue dress fluttering softly behind her. The kunoichi smiled softly as she shook her head, almost pitying Naruto. That girl, she knew, would be one hell of a heartbreaker when she got older.
Gaara smiled as he looked at the blonde haired shinobi, seeing the excitement in his blue eyes. “I’m trusting that your journey went well.” Gaara said with a pleasant smile.
Naruto nodded before answering, “Yeah, except I could have gone without the damn rain.”
Both males chuckled as Gaara got up and shook the blonde’s hand. “Your little girl’s a handful.” Gaara commented lightly. “She nearly drove all of my shinobi insane.”
“Dump her on some Gennin team when the higher-ups need a break.” Naruto chuckled as they left the red head’s office. “Just say that keeping her amused and out of trouble is a B-ranked mission in itself.”
“With her energy, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was that.”
The two talked as they left the Kazekage tower and walked down the street, telling the other what they had been up to. “You actually threatened to leave Konoha if they kicked Mahina out?” Gaara questioned.
“Well, yeah. She’s my daughter.” Naruto said as he shoved his hands in his pockets. “She’s been my kid since I first saw her in that fucking cell.”
“But to threaten to leave your village… I don’t think they would have appreciated that.”
“No, but what else could I do? They weren’t willing to listen to reason.” Naruto explained with a frown.
Gaara nodded in understanding, knowing how protective the blonde could be. From what he knew, the blonde would willingly charge into Hell itself just for someone he cared about. “Which,” Gaara informed the blonde, “is what you don’t always listen to.”
Naruto grinned slightly before answering, “That’s why I make sure that Mahina’s around at least one reasonable person. Sooner or later, we’ll see how that approach is working.”
“Well, we don’t have to wait to see her reaction.” Gaara commented lightly. “Looks like she’s entertaining herself.”
The blonde looked ahead, seeing his little girl playing outside. She had grown a couple of inches and from how easily she was shaping the sand into a humanoid form, she had been practicing. “Hi-Hi!” Naruto called.
The sand figure dropped as Mahina looked over towards them, her clear blue eyes brightening. “Daddy! Daddy, you came!” Mahina shouted happily as she ran to them, throwing herself into her father’s arms. “I missed you so much!”
Naruto hugged his daughter, moving his body to the side as he held the little girl close. “I’m so glad you’re safe.” Naruto said, his voice loving. “Everyone was so worried, even me.”
Mahina looked at him before saying, “But Daddies don’t get scared.”
“Daddies get scared.” Naruto confirmed. “Believe me, I was scared that you wouldn’t get found.”
The little girl wrapped her arms around Naruto’s neck, trying to comfort him. “Stupid Sasuke’s brother let me go.” Mahina told them as they went inside. “I think I scared him cause the shark man got really mad at me and he was gonna kill me but I told him to drop that stupid sword and he did it. He was cussing a lot cause he didn’t want to.”
“Shark man? You mean, you made Kisame drop that damn sword?” Naruto questioned with a surprised look.
“Uh huh. Stupid Sasuke’s brother looked really nervous.” Mahina said before whispering in her father’s ear, “I think he thought I could make other people do what I wanted.”
“Did you?” Gaara questioned, having not heard this before.
Mahina shook her head before resting her head on Naruto’s shoulder, her eyes focused on a wall. “Something wrong, Hi-Hi?”
“Daddy, what’s a Jinchuuriki?”
