-- Chapter Twelve – Facing Facts --
Itachi sat across from his
fiancé. “Look, I’m sorry about this, but
I know you don’t love me either. There’s
no point in my divorcing a man I love if all I’m trying to do is keep my
money.”
The Hyuuga girl, he still hadn’t
bothered to learn her name, just shrugged.
“If it’s what you want, I’m okay with it. It wasn’t as if my heart was invested in
this.” She rose and left without another
word.
Itachi sighed and leaned back in
his chair, rubbing his temples. He was
feeling a headache all ready from the situation. He closed his eyes, waiting for his father to
come in. He had arranged a private
meeting with his fiancé first to tell her what had happened two nights prior at
Sasuke’s apartment.
He wanted to let her know it wasn’t personal, but she already knew
that. Now he was going to have to face
telling his father that not only was he gay, but he had gotten married without
the family’s consent to a person they didn’t truly know. The headache was throbbing now, but he knew Genma would be waiting back at Sasuke’s
apartment for him as promised.
Itachi didn’t bother to look up as
the study door opened and closed silently.
Fugaku looked at his oldest son. “What did you need to speak with me about, Itachi?”
Itachi sighed and massaged his
temples again. Fugaku
sighed angrily, “Itachi, I’m a busy and important
man. If you are not going to get down to
business, you will have missed your opportunity to speak.”
Itachi glared at the man across
from him. Despite whatever his outward
appearance of his relationship with his father, in private they were cold at
best towards one another. “I have to
speak with you concerning my engagement.”
Fugaku’s eyes went ice cold. “I have called it off.”
Though the rest of his body seemed calm, a deadly gleam
crossed his father’s eyes, his mouth set in a firmer line, and his hands
tightened against each other. The voice
was cold and calculating, “Why would you do such a stupid thing, Itachi?”
Itachi ran a hand through his hair
before settling back in his chair, appearing relaxed. “I could not, in good faith, get married to
her when I got married two nights ago to someone else.”
His father’s control was slipping. Itachi saw the
right eye begin to twitch and his entire body was becoming rigid. He liked invoking this state of being in his
father. The best part about it was that Fugaku was afraid of Itachi’s
ability with the Sharingan and would not get into an
actual fight with him. “Whom, may I ask,
did you enter into this marriage with?”
Itachi smirked. “I don’t feel it is necessary to tell you
just yet. You will learn of it soon
enough.”
Fugaku grabbed a pen off his desk
and clutched at it until his knuckles were white. His eyes were nothing more than angry
slits. “I demand to know who you have
married, now,” his voice softened to an angry hiss, “or I will not be
responsible for my actions.”
Itachi sighed and put his hands in
his head. His father was such a pain in
the ass. He never escaped these
encounters, no matter how much in control he was, without a monstrous
headache. “Fine,” he sighed. “I married Shiranui
Genma.” He
smirked as his father completely lost control and snapped the pen in half. “He and I have been in an intimate
relationship for the past two years.”
Fugaku took a deep breath and
closed his eyes. He cracked his neck and
shrugged his shoulders before opening deadly calm eyes and turning them toward Itachi. “This is a
disgraceful decision and disgraceful action.
You are not worthy of carrying the name Uchiha. I don’t know why I couldn’t have children
that could bring me pride. Instead I
wind up with homosexuals who can’t even pretend to be straight for the sake of
the clan. What will I tell the clan
heads when they find out that you are not longer part of my family?”
Itachi stood up before crossing
the short distance to his father’s desk.
He took all of the things that he had in his possession that had
belonged to his father – his keys to his car, the key to the compound, and all
the money that wasn’t from missions – and placed them on his desk. “Since I am no longer part of the family, I
really don’t care.”
Itachi turned his back on his
father and stopped at the door, looking back over his shoulder. “There’s no reason that Sasuke
and I couldn’t have remained part of the family. There’s no reason that we couldn’t have
helped the clan prosper. There are ways
to have children without marrying a woman.
Genma and I plan to have children
someday. Sasuke
has plans to have children someday. They
will have Uchiha genes, but they won’t have Uchiha names. I was
the one to change my name. I did not
want anything other than the genetics I cannot change tying me to this awful
life.”
Before he could close the door behind him, Fugaku had crossed the distance and smacked Itachi across the face.
“You ungrateful little bastard! I should have kicked you out when you failed
the first ANBU captain test. I should
have put my focus into Sasuke. He would have bent to my will with how hard
he worked to get me to notice him.”
Itachi’s eyes flashed red. “Don’t speak that way about Sasuke. He was a
great asset to you all the time, but you never noticed him. You never noticed when he was drunk. You never noticed when he tried to end his
life. You never noticed when he
succeeded as well as I did at everything.
If anything, you should have loved him.
That was really all he wanted.”
Fugaku was too angry to pay heed
to the spinning Sharingan in his son’s eyes. His own was activated. The killing intent was rolling like waves
over both men. Itachi
decided to be the bigger man and began moving toward the front door. Fugaku blocked his
way again and slammed Itachi against the front door,
breaking his arm. Itachi
refused to register the pain on his face or in his body. “You are worthless,” Fugaku
spit as he threw Itachi out the door.
Itachi screamed in anger as he
walked down the roads of the Uchiha district. The rest of the clan was scared of Itachi, because they’d never seen him so emotional. None of the main families were
emotional. His mind was clouded with
rage. His broken bones were causing him
physical pain. He knew he needed to go
to the hospital, and somehow his body found its way there. Tsunade attended to
him personally. “What’s wrong, Itachi?”
Itachi stared not at her, but
through her. “He’s an asshole. My father disowned me a bit more violently
than he disowned Sasuke.”
Tsunade stared in disbelief. Itachi had a
cracked jaw and a broken arm because of his own father. “Why would he disown you?”
Itachi was about answer when he
felt Genma’s chakra enter the room. His emotional stability, as bad as it was,
held out until Genma had him in his arms. Itachi began
sobbing as Tsunade healed his arm and jaw. Genma sighed as he
soothingly stroked Itachi’s hair. He looked at Tsuande,
“I’m afraid he was disowned for the same reason Sasuke
was. Itachi
and I got married two nights ago.”
Tsunade sighed and shook her
head. “Stupid old
clans and their stupid old ideals.”
She smiled. “I expect to see the
two of you in my office at 3 today.” Genma nodded, realizing they were not in any sort of
trouble. “Itachi’s
fine now. The two of you may go.”
Itachi sighed and wiped at his eyes. “I’m sorry, Gen. I shouldn’t be all emotional like I’m a
fucking chick.”
Genma shook his head as he guided
his husband out of the hospital and toward Sasuke’s
apartment. “Don’t be sorry, ‘Tachi. I love
you. I’ve seen you cry before. I’m not going to suddenly leave you this
time.”
They heard Naruto and Sasuke laughing as they approached the apartment door. Genma opened the
door and smiled when he saw that Naruto and Sasuke had cleaned the apartment. “Honey, we’re home,” Itachi
quipped as they walked in. Genma let go of his husband after giving him a soft kiss.
“Hey,” Naruto said without looking
away from the photos he and Sasuke were going
through.
Genma and Itachi
found a spot on the couch, across from the boys sitting on the floor. “Party pictures?” Genma asked.
Sasuke nodded. “There’s a few crazy
shots in here, but there are some that are really nice of respective couples
that we plan on giving out.” He rifled
through a few piles before pulling out two pictures of Genma
and Itachi and handing them to Genma. Sasuke’s eyes met
his brother’s for the first time. “What
the fuck did he do to you?”
Itachi shook his head with a small
frown on his face. “How do you always
know?”
Sasuke shrugged. “Because I love you?” He laughed at the look on Itachi’s
face. “Seriously, I just always knew
when something was wrong.”
Itachi sighed. “Broken arm and cracked jaw combined with a
verbal lashing and disowning.” He smiled
softly as he looked at Genma. “It’s all worth it though, for my freedom.”
Sasuke nodded. He knew exactly what his brother was
saying. The last few weeks had been the
most exhilarating and wonderful weeks of his life. He didn’t have anyone to please but
himself. He smiled as he saw Itachi’s face soften while looking at the pictures he’d
just handed over. “I like the one where Genma’s in your lap the best.”
Genma looked over. There was a picture of him and Itachi watching the game of bullshit, snuggled together on
the couch. Their heads were leaned
against each other, and Itachi had his arm wrapped
protectively, possessively around his waist.
The other picture was of them standing in the doorway to the kitchen,
waiting to get beers from the fridge. Itachi was laughing at something Genma
had said. Genma’s
arm was thrown over Itachi’s shoulder, pulling the
man close to him. “These are good
pictures, Sas.
Thanks for them. We’ll put ‘em in our room.”
Itachi smirked. “Are you sure you don’t mind us staying
here?”
Sasuke and Naruto
both nodded. “We like you guys. Just try to keep the talks down or turn the
music up,” Naruto teased.
Sasuke growled as he felt his
father’s chakra at the door before he heard the knock. Sasuke motioned Genma to take Itachi to the
bedroom. “I’ll handle this. Itachi needs his
rest and distance.”
Itachi wanted to protest, but Genma
was already whispering dirty things into his ears. Suddenly nothing was more important than
getting his husband to their bedroom and music be damned. Sasuke waited until
the bedroom door closed before opening his front door. “Uchiha-san,” Sasuke said coldly.
Fugaku raised an eyebrow slightly
at the formal and rigid greeting. He’d
half expected Sasuke to beg for his old life and his
father’s recognition. “I’m here to take
back Itachi.
The council is voting to annul his marriage.”
Sasuke laughed in his father’s
face. “Sorry, Uchiha-san,
but Itachi’s decision is final. Only he can make the decision to annul the
marriage, and if you wait a few minutes, you’ll hear the proof he has no
intention of doing so.”
Fugaku glared at his youngest
son. “The council of Konoha
elders can force an annulment, and we need Itachi.” He smirked as he sneered at his son, “Unless
you think you could fill Itachi’s shoes.”
Sasuke’s patience was running
out. He gripped the door harder, but
relaxed as he felt Naruto’s hand clasp his
shoulder. Naruto
turned red eyes towards Sasuke’s father. “You know something, Uchiha. You are a prick. You have two wonderful sons, who just happen
to like men, and you disowned them for only that reason. They could have done horrible things like
unleash the Kyuubi on the village, but they
didn’t.” The red eyes stared into the
now red eyes of Fugaku, full of knowledge.
Fugaku stood straighter and glared
at Sasuke. “I
won’t ask the council to force Itachi’s annulment, if
you promise to keep your ‘friend’,” Sasuke didn’t
think the word friend could have been uttered with such disdain if he had not
heard it himself, “away from them as well.”
Sasuke shrugged. He really had no idea what Naruto, or rather Kyuubi, was
talking about. He was the only one who
knew that Naruto could communicate with the Kyuubi. “I
will. Leave. You are not welcome here.”
Fugaku turned on his heels and
left with an air of superiority. Sasuke turned to his now calm, blue-eyed friend. “What was that about?”
Naruto shook his head. “Don’t know.
Kyuubi wouldn’t let me hear. That fox has grown attached to me, I
think. Likes to make sure I don’t face
anything harmful.”
Sasuke smirked. “Okay then.”
He pulled Naruto back to the photos and they
began compiling collages for the people who had attended. They planned on having a dinner with most of
the same people over, and would give them out then. There was posterboard
and glue out on the floor. Sasuke was having a good time assembling the presents when Itachi came back out.
Sasuke smiled.
“Well, it sounded like you two were having fun with your newfound
freedom.”
Itachi blushed. “Yeah. Well, Genma needs
some painkillers. I don’t want to keep
him waiting.”
Sasuke laughed softly. He wouldn’t tell Itachi
it was because he knew the painkillers were for him. He waved as Itachi
headed back to his room. He looked over
the most recent picture Naruto pulled up and burst
out laughing. Deidara
was dancing around near Neji and Shika
during their bullshit game. It was
undoubtedly while they he singing ‘I Feel Pretty.’ His visible blue eye sparkled with a slightly
intoxicated gleam. Sasuke
had to admit that Deidara had a gorgeous body, but he
still intended to make Deidara wait at least three
weeks before their relationship progressed to full-out fucking.
