Chapter 13

"Eh?"

Was Sasuke blind or something? Was he in so much denial that he wanted to pretend Neji was a girl so he wouldn't be labeled a homosexual or something? Or maybe...maybe Naruto hadn't heard him right.

"C-could you repeat that, please?"

"I said," Sasuke leaned forward and spoke in a slightly louder voice spacing his words so there would be no misunderstandings. "Neji is not a male; Neji is a female."

"A female?"

"Chick, broad, babe, hen, whatever," he replied with a wave of his hand and leaned back into his seat.

"Uh huh," Naruto nodded his head, he decided to play along. "And uh, how do you figure that, Uchiha?"

"Because, he's a woman in a man's body."

Naruto bristled before he lost his composure. "That doesn't make him a woman, Sasuke," he yelled. Apparently, Neji was in denial too. Someone was gonna have to sit those two down and have a serious talk with them and it wasn't going to be him. He had had enough of their bullshit. "That just makes him confused about his gender."

"No, no confusion there. He IS a woman in a man's body, what's so hard to understand?" he said it as if even someone in elementary school should get it and that Naruto was just too unintelligent to grasp the obvious.

Naruto muttered something under his breath about Sasuke and his stupid mind-games. Sasuke knew he should stop putzing around and just explain in Layman's terms what he really meant but he was enjoying teasing Naruto way too much.

"Okay, so Neji is a girl in a man's body?" Naruto asked putting emphasis on the words 'girl' and 'man's'.

Sasuke nodded once, "Yes!"

"And you and he were in a relationship?"

"That is correct."

"And while in this relationship, the two of you had sex?"

"Lots of it."

"But you're not gay?"

"Nope!"

Naruto rubbed his temples. No matter how he approached this he reached the same road block and he couldn't make heads nor tails of what Sasuke was talking about.

He tried a different tactic.

"Sasuke...are you serious?" he asked on a sigh.

"Dead serious," came the flat reply.

"Okay, then I'll just have to accept the fact that you're a self-concious asshole who's too ashamed to confront his sexual-orientation and a sick bastard for encouraging another guy to pretend to be something he's not."

Sasuke laughed at that then and Naruto was rapidly confirming his friend was insane.

"Naruto, I'm not confused about my sexual-orientation, I told you already I'm straight." Naruto just scoffed and the Uchiha continued. "If I was in fact gay then I wouldn't have been attracted to the Hyuga, I would have been attracted to you."

Naruto didn't know how to respond to that comment and suddenly felt very uncomfortable. When he didn't say anything Sasuke went on.

"But Hyuga is lacking something that you have, that we both have, the thing that defines us as males."

"So he's a eunuch?" asked the blond trying to fill in the blank space.

"Dammit, Naruto if he was a eunuch I would have told you he was a eunuch but I'm telling you that Neji's a girl."

Naruto exploded, tired of getting all the wrong answers and annoyed that Sasuke was being so vague. "But how the hell can he be a girl? Sure he's got long hair and stuff but he's got no breasts and he's got no-" Naruto broke off when he saw the grin make it's way across Sasuke's face.

No way! There was no fucking way Neji had a...

"Va-gi-na!" Sasuke said the word slowly, his lips, teeth and tongue emphasizing each syllable and the way he said that word made it sound so dirty especially coming from Uchiha Sasuke's mouth. Naruto would have laughed...if he wasn't in so much shock.

"N-no way!"

"He's got a uterus too and it works."

Naruto shook his head in disbelief his eyes desperately searching Sasuke's face to see if he was joking or trying to pull his leg.

"His clit's bigger than an average woman's and twice as sensitive."

Naruto's head was still shaking. Any moment now, any moment now Sasuke was gonna tell him 'Gotcha! Man, Naruto you're so gullible'. Any moment now.

"He squirts when he orgasms too, he gets that stuff everywhere," Sasuke was speaking to no one in particular now and he seemed to be inspecting his fingernails as he went on.

Naruto hadn't stopped shaking his head yet.

"He has a menstrual cycle and everything and he gets really bad PMS sometimes. Try to avoid him during those times, okay." He looked up at Naruto then who had a retarded expression on his face. "Oi, Naruto. Are you listening to me?"

Naruto continued to shake his head, "Sasuke, I don't understand."

After all of that and he STILL didn't understand? Damn, he really could be stupid sometimes.

Sasuke sighed and decided to stop playing his little game. "Neji is trans-gender." When Naruto said nothing he moved on, determined to make this as simple as possible. "He was born as a girl and raised as a girl...at first...but as he got older his physical features betrayed what everyone thought he originally was even though he had female reproductive organs, so his family decided to raise him as a boy instead."

"Why?" his voice was soft and his face reflected pity. He could only imagine how hard it must have been for the boy to be treated as something one day and then be treated like the exact opposite the next.

Sasuke shrugged, "I dunno, I guess they decided it was easier to hide the fact that he was a girl than wait for him to grow boobs or something." It was a crass thing to say but Sasuke was pissed all over again when he thought about what the Hyuga family had done to the boy.

"But why would they want to hide it? What would make them do something like that?"

Sasuke knew the reason very well but he didn't want to tell his friend he wasn't sure the sentimental boy could handle it, so he opted for a watered down version. "You have to understand, Naruto. The Hyuga clan is a very old and very influential family in Japan, kind of like the Royal family in England. Everything they do, everything they say, gets back to the media so to avoid negative publicity they avoid drawing too much attention to themselves."

Naruto understood where Sasuke was going with this.

"A trans-gender person is still kind of...taboo so to avoid Neji's 'mixed-gender' getting out they 'dealt' with it as best as they could at the time."

"How sad." Naruto looked distraught and Sasuke knew exactly how he felt. He had felt the same way when he 'discovered' Neji's little secret, well not at first:

It was many years ago, he and Hyuga were neighbours, sharing the same wing on the top floor of the building. They were both from a rich and powerful family line but while that would have made them kindred spirits or maybe even rivals it only made them bitter enemies because Sasuke could not STAND the snooty, little prick that was Hyuga. Looking back on it now, he understood why Neji was so anti-social, but he had pulled that shit with the wrong person, Sasuke was not one to let anybody look down their snobby little nose at him, no one!

Sasuke didn't back down and avoid him like everyone else. The more Hyuga tried to treat him like trash, the more Sasuke got in his face. Although there was obvious tension between the two they had never got into a physical fight before, until one day during gym class. They were playing a game of basketball, the class was split into two teams and Neji and Sasuke were both on the same team. Gai-sensei had hoped it would help them to sort out if their differences if they had to do a little team-work but everyone else knew better.

It would have been much easier for the rest of their team if they had indeed been opponents.

Neji blatantly refused to pass to Sasuke even if he was open and although their team was still winning Sasuke couldn't put it aside and lost his temper. He had the ball and was making his way down the court, the person guarding him was a boisterous boy by the name of, Kiba but he didn't have much problem getting away from him as he made his way to the basket but instead of making the shot he pivoted around Kiba and threw the ball straight at Neji's head. It was a childish thing to do but Sasuke didn't care because he felt very satisfied when the ball hit him square in the face and knocked him to the ground. Everyone stopped in their tracks and Gai-sensei blew his whistle.

Neji growled and threw himself at Uchiha. Sasuke couldn't remember exactly how the fight went because he was seeing red at the time, but he did remember them rolling around on the ground alot and punching Neji. That was the first time he had ever hit Neji in the face. Gai-sensei blew his whistle many times after that but neither boy relented, actually neither boy could hear it among their screams of hatred, their strings of curses and the rush of blood pounding in their ears. It took Gai, Lee (his Assistant Coach), and three other boys to pull them apart.

When they were now away from each other Sasuke noticed the other boys in the class looking at Neji with a horrified expression on their faces. Gai-sensei looked concerned too and called the Hyuga aside to ask him something so the other boys couldn't hear. Neji looked down at himself and when Sasuke looked too he saw it. The crotch of Neji's gym pants was covered in blood, and the rumour (compliments of Kiba) was that Neji had burst one of his testicles during the fight.

Gai-sensei called over Sasuke just then and ordered him to take Neji to the school nurse since the damage he caused to the other boy was probably his fault. Sasuke didn't want to, Hyuga could bleed to death for all he cared but Gai-sensei threatened to give him a demerit although both boys immediately got detention for fighting in the first place.

Sasuke reluctantly escorted the Hyuga to the nurse's office but on their way there he saw the injured boy rounding a corner as if to exit the school building.

"Oi, where do you think you're going? The nurse's office is this way," he said indicating the direction with a nod of his head.

"I'm not going to the nurse's office," came the terse reply.

Sasuke reached out and grabbed the other boy's wrist. "Like hell you are," he spat. "I've already got detention because of you and there's no chance in hell you're gonna make me get a demerit too."

Neji sneered even as he tried to pull away from the other boy's iron-clad grip. "Like I give a shit."

Sasuke fumed and turned around, still holding the boy's arm. If he had to drag him to the nurse's office then so be it. Neji tugged harder and almost yanked Sasuke's arm out of it's socket. The boy was alot stronger than he'd thought.

"I said I'm not going, Uchicha so get your fucking hands off me."

"You know you have a serious problem Hyuga but I'm not about to analyze you right now, I'll save that for the shrink you so desperately need to see. But right now I'm taking you to the nurse so I can be rid of you."

Neji struggled again and Sasuke saw something akin to fear flash across his features. What was he so afraid of?

Sasuke sighed and for a minute tried to put himself in the Hyuga's shoes. He didn't like how they fit. "Look Hyuga, I know the nurse is a woman and everything but there's nothing to be afraid of, I'm sure she's seen plenty of dicks in her life." He didn't know why Neji suddenly blushed but he ignored it and just assumed he was embarrassed about dropping his pants in front of a woman he didn't know.

"But you're bleeding pretty badly and if you 'cracked' one of your 'jewels' then you should really get it looked at." He had tried to be subtle but the Hyuga's blush only deepened and his gaze had fallen to the ground.

"Stop worrying, it's natural- I mean it's nothing."

Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "Natural?"

"I said it's nothing!" he yelled, his head snapping back up to meet Sasuke's. "Now.Let.Me.Go!"

Sasuke had had enough, the boy was being a prick if he was afraid of seeing the nurse, unless he had a really small penis and was ashamed about that. He was suddenly very curious and his ego needed the boost. He gripped the Hyuga's arms and slammed his back against the wall. "Fine you little piece of shit," he ground out between clenched teeth. "If you won't go to the nurse then I'll examine you myself."

Neji's eyes flew open wide and Sasuke saw the sheer terror within their pale depths. "Let me go right now, Uchiha." He struggled viciously against his grip and managed to get free but Sasuke was swift and tackled him to the ground. Neji swung a fist and it connected with the other boy's jaw and Sasuke retaliated in turn. That was the last time he had ever hit Neji in the face. The blow must have winded Hyuga for a while and Sasuke took advantage of the opportunity to quickly divest the boy of this gym shorts and boxers.

"No," his voice was a choked whisper even as fat tears started to stream down his face.

Sasuke could not believe what he saw...or what he didn't see.

Neji didn't have a dick!

Just to be sure he wasn't seeing things he spread Neji's legs and reached out one hand to part the plump lips framed by soft pubic hair. It was covered in blood but there was no mistaking the exposed flesh before him. He ran a finger down across the over-sized clitoris, aware of Neji's violent shudder and continued that path until his finger stopped at the little hole that clenched reflexively.

"Shit, Hyuga I knew you were a pussy but I didn't think you'd have one."

Neji was sobbing now and Sasuke looked into the boy's face and immediately felt guilt hit him like a ton of bricks. His head lay in a puddle of his own tears and his red face was contorted with embarrassment and grief. His mouth was open wide to let loud, harsh sobs escape from deep within his stomach. Sasuke wasn't aware that fondling Neji like that had terribly aroused him but when he saw the boy break-down it vanished immediately.

Sasuke released him and he slowly brought his legs together. His body shook violently with each sob that escaped his throat and Sasuke wanted to rip his heart out of his chest. That was a woman's cry. He couldn't take it, but he couldn't leave. Eventually his sobs became hiccups and he pulled himself into a fetal position, a few long moments after that and he stopped crying altogether and just stared blankly at nothing in particular and as he lay like that upon the cold tiles Sasuke wondered if he had somehow willed himself into death.

He got up shakily, his body didn't seem to have enough energy to support him and he had to use the wall for support as he leaned against it and pulled his clothing back into their proper position. He pushed himself off the wall and turned to face Sasuke with red-eyes and a tear-streaked face. He tried to remain expressionless but Sasuke saw his lips were quivering, forcing himself no to cry again.

Hyuga swallowed and tried to get his voice as even as possible but it was shaky and broke near the end, "What do you want?"

He knew what he meant. Hyuga wanted to know what Sasuke wanted in exchange for keeping this a secret. Sasuke was somewhat offended. It was just like his type to think he could buy off the Uchiha.

"I don't want anything from you, Hyuga," he said with disdain before walking around him to make his way back to the dorm. He heard the silent sobs again in that feminine voice and stopped suddenly feeling like a heel. "Relax, Hyuga. Your secret's safe with me."

And Sasuke kept that promise up this day. He knew why it was important it remain a secret, Neji had told him all about his past, his upbringing and his family (mainly the main branch) wanting to keep this under wraps. He was a prisoner on the estate and Neji was not allowed to make friends or even have a boyfriend for that matter. He was mostly home-schooled but managed to convince the Hyuga head to allow him to go to college if he promised to keep low-keyed, he couldn't choose the college or the dorm where he stayed, but he was at least able to choose his major.

As it turned out Sasuke was a blessing in disguise. He helped the Hyuga come up with excuses for why he couldn't do certain things and he covered for him when he had particularly bad menstrual cramps. Eventually they got close and Uchiha moved into his dorm. It wasn't unheard of, two or maybe even three people sharing a room, so no one suspected anything. Things were going great, until that night the Hyuga kicked him out and well...here they were.

So! Hyuga was a girl. That explained alot of things, actually it explained everything. The way he was embarrassed at the onsen, his peculiar shape, the way he could do that feminine voice so easily and it definitely explained why Sasuke was always humping the poor guy. But it still didn't explain one thing...

"Hey, Sasuke."

"Hn?"

"If you know Neji's a girl, why do you keep addressing her as 'him'? Doesn't that freak you out sometimes?"

That was a very good question. Sasuke was a little uncomfortable with it at first but it was very imperative that they keep up the ruse of Neji's masculinity and that was much more important than Sasuke's principles. Eventually it didn't matter anymore and it made the relationship more exotic and 'naughty' and Sasuke liked it that way.

"No, I'm over that now," he admitted. "And you should continue to address him as a male, it will be easier to remember and help avoid slip-ups." Naruto nodded his understanding.

"Oh, and one more thing Naruto."

The blond looked up at his friend and felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. Sasuke was gazing at him intently, he was leaning over with his elbows on his knees and his hands woven together in front of his mouth. His voice was low and just as intent as his glare but Naruto heard every word he said.

"The reason I told you this is because you're my friend and I trust you. Now, I know you don't like Hyuga very much but I care for him a great deal. It is very important that this remain a secret because there are people looking to hurt him if it gets out. So if you jeopardize Hyuga's safety..."

His eyes became slits and Naruto gulped.

"-I will kill you."
