Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
The rant is gone. Thanks for all the support guys. It totally got me writing again. I've just had a really bad week with my grandma dying and all, and then to get back from the funeral and have nasty e-mails from people who had what I write... It was just rough. Enough of the pity party though. I appreciate that there are some people who do like what I write.
I don't own these characters. I hope you enjoy.

Naruto had just stood up to go to the bathroom when he heard a scuffle outside of the door.
"Oh Lord, It's the Leprechauns." he squealed, diving on to Neji's bed.
"What the fuck are you doing?" Neji hissed as he sat up with a start.
"There's something trying to get in the door!"
"Yeah, it's probably Mina."
"Ohh... yeah..." Naruto shifted his weight off of Neji and walked to the door.
"Mina?"
"It's me."
Naruto opened the door a crack. It sure looked like her but he hadn't bothered to ask if Leprechauns could shape shift.
"Let me in, what's going on?"
"How do I know you aren't a shape shifting leprechaun?"
"Neji, can you help me out here? Mina called in to the room.
"You brought this entirely on yourself." He called back, and rolled over so his back was to the door.
"Fine, Naruto, think of a number one through a thousand. If I can tell you the number, you'll know it's me."
"Can Leprechauns read minds too?"
"There's NO SUCH THING as a Leprechaun! AHHHH." Mina leaned hard into the door but Naruto was heavier than she was so the door didn't budge.
"This is ridiculous." She raised her hand slightly, looked directly into Naruto's eyes and said "Open the door."
The door swung open.
"I'd like to see a Leprechaun do that." She smirked turning to Naruto. He smiled, relieved it really was Mina, but that's when he noticed Neji shaking in the bed. Mina noticed too, and from the look on her face, she had read what was troubling him.
"I didn't think Naruto would care. I wouldn't have done that to you." she said gently as she moved closer to him.
"I don't like when you do it at all." he said softly.
"Do what?" Naruto was confused. He'd never seen Neji look so upset.
"I don't like it when she makes people do things." his voice came out small. "It just turns people into slaves. It's not fair to take someone's free will away." His voice had gotten louder as he continued and was staring pointedly at Mina.
"I'm sorry Neji." Mina whispered, and Naruto believed her. She definitely looked sorry. "I can't say that I won't ever do it again in front of you, because if there is danger, I would use anything I had to protect my friends. I promise you though that I won't use it again just playing around. That was awful of me. I'm sorry to you too, Naruto. I shouldn't have done that."
Neji looked slightly mollified and Naruto noticed for the first time how unlike Sasuke Mina could be. He could just picture in his mind how rather than apologizing Sasuke would argue for hours over why he had done what he had done, and why it had been the best decision, and why Naruto was dumb for not agreeing with him. His heart ached with how much he missed him. If they could get him back, he would be happy to be nothing but a doormat for Sasuke for the rest of his life. He would promise anything away for another day with his best friend. Mina broke the silence.
"We still have another two hours before we can try and use the door. My aunt suggested earlier that it might be wiser while in Sand Country if you guys wore the vestments of Witch Village. Thieves are more likely to leave us alone, and word has gotten out about your disappearance from your mission. If we're spotted, it wouldn't be beyond some people to capture you and try to hold you for ransom."
"We aren't helpless children." Neji pointed out.
"I know, and I agree. However, wearing your forehead protector's is going to make it pretty obvious who you are, and I'm sure Itachi has "friends" everywhere."
"So it's more like a disguise?" Naruto asked, his voice full of excitement. Truth be told, he wanted to wear the witch clothes so bad it hurt. He was always fascinated by other cultures and he always loved pretending to be someone else.
"Yup, you even get a wand!"
"A WAND!!!!!" Naruto couldn't help himself. He tripped out of bed and ran to the bags that Mina had dropped on the floor as she walked in. Sure enough, there were two wands, along with the all black clothes and the loose black and red vests that signified Witch Village. The next bag contained black eyeliner and dark lipstick. The third bag contained black backpacks with odd little characters all over them. Neji joined him on the floor and even he seemed a little curious about what he would look like wearing all of this.
"Do you know how everything is supposed to go on?" Mina asked when they had the bags' contents spilled into a pile on the floor. They both nodded.
"Ok then, I'm going to my aunts apartment to get all "witched up" and then I'll be back. Try to be ready within the hour." Naruto noticed that she picked up the key before walking out of the room.
~~~~
Itachi felt sick to his stomach. All afternoon he had been getting hit with waves of emotion. These weren't regular every day emotions either, the kind that he felt occasionally but ignored. These were girly, intense emotions. It had to be Mina. Somehow she was channeling everything she felt into him. He felt feelings of comradery, and then of happiness, and then of sadness, and then of happiness, and then of love, and then of sadness, and then of happiness. He was going to throw up... He turned to glare at Sasuke.
"Your sister is a fucking roller coaster."
~~~~
It hadn't taken Naruto and Neji long to get into their disguises, but from the sounds coming from the bathroom, Neji guessed Naruto was frustrated with the eyeliner.
"...damn witches..." Neji heard him sigh. He walked in and took the narrow pencil from the blonde boy. He noticed that Naruto had at least gotten the lipstick on well and that it made Naruto's pout stand out more. Black suited him.
"Sit on the edge of the tub." he commanded. Naruto did and Neji moved to a position where the light would be best. He noticed that one of Naruto's eyes was very red. 'He must have poked himself.'
"Now hold still." Naruto froze into place and Neji carefully traced each of his eyes in black. 'Wow. That makes him look... sexy.' Naruto almost always looked cute, no one could deny that, but Neji had never seen him look... alluring.
"I need to trace over that one more time. It needs to be a little darker." In reality it was fairly dark already but Neji though with just a little more, people would be tripping over themselves to get to his friend. He looked like a gothic sex god. When he was finished Naruto stood up and looked in the mirror.
"Damn, we're hot!" Naruto exclaimed. "I'm taking this stuff with me."
Neji looked in the mirror as well and realized Naruto was correct. They were both hot. Neji had figured this look would flatter him, but he had had no idea what it would do for Naruto.
They both heard the door unlock at the same time and walked out into the hotel room to see a much darker version of their friend. He was about to remark that she looked very nice in her get up but she was stopped in her tracks looking at the two of them.
"Wow." she mumbled. Neji had been right in his thinking. Anyone who saw Naruto was going to be reduced to incoherency.
"Sorry. I was just... surprised. You both look hot. Which makes me feel creepy, like I'm lusting after family. Maybe this wasn't a good idea."
"Why not?" Naruto demanded. Neji had seen the surprised look on his face when Mina had confessed that she thought they were hot.
"Because we were trying to keep a low profile and the two of you look like... I can't even describe it. We're going to be beating people off with a stick."
Neji smiled. He couldn't help himself. He had plenty of girls in his fan club back in Konoha, some of them a few years older than him even, but Mina was different. He wasn't attracted to her at all; there was just something in him that had been frustrated she hadn't seemed to think he was cool or attractive in the least. This was much better. 'Shit! I hope I thought that quietly.'
Mina caught his eye. He couldn't tell if it was because she had heard his thoughts or because she was still having a hard time adjusting to the fact that her companions had gone from little brothers, in her eyes, to hot.
"Do you have everything packed up?" she finally managed to get out.
"Yup. Is the door far?"
"Not at all, it's actually in the basement of the next building over."
They walked out the door and back down to the front desk. Mina handed over the key and her aunt, uncle and the other people in the lobby all got very quiet.
"I'll come back when I have more time to visit"
"You three be careful!" her uncle called after them as they walked out to the cool darkness and walked right back in a neighboring building. They made their way down a rickety set of stairs and came out into a dark room with a bright yellow couch and a lazy looking boy about their age staring at them. His mouth dropped open a little when get got a good look at Neji and Naruto.
"Hello Mina. Who are your friends?"
"This is Neji, and this is Naruto. Guys, this is Orion."
"Where to?" Orion asked, not taking his eyes off of Naruto.
"Sand Country. Preferably in a village, not the woods, somewhere near the vicinity of where the east road would enter the town would be best, if that's possible."
"It's very possible." Orion answered as he walked over to the door, whispered something to it and then knocked three times. Someone on the other side knocked back three times, and the boy gestured for them that they could enter.
"Does this hurt?" Naruto seemed nervous and Neji felt his stomach doing flip-flops.
"Not at all. It's just like walking through a regular door. You just come out in an irregular place."
Mina walked through the door and Neji and Naruto followed her quickly. They were in a cave, lit by a few lanterns, and there was more light streaming in from above. As they got closer to the light they could see stairs and as they walked up them the light went from bright to intense. They stepped out on to a busy street, but it was night out. The light had been from the many signs that lit the roadway.
“Well, we’re definitely in the right spot.” Neji muttered as a gust of wind and swoosh of sand hit him in the face. Now let’s get looking for your brothers.”
~~~~
"My sister is a what?" Sasuke was looking at him with that same strange expression he had used before.
'DAMN IT! Why did I say that? I'm losing it. I'm losing my mind. GET A GRIP. At least what I said is harmless enough. That's not possibly enough of a clue to let him in about Mina is it?' one brief second he actually considered trying to put it to a tune and act like it was a song lyric. When he realized how pathetic that was he wanted to stab himself.
"You heard me, Sasuke, your sister is a fucking roller coaster." He said it evenly and with a smirk. If he could just play it off as part of normal conversation, his brother would not be the wiser. Inside he was fighting off another one if Mina's wild mood swings, but he fought hard to maintain his cool demeanor so as not to show off any more chinks in his armor.
"What does that even mean?" Sasuke asked, exasperated. He even looked a little disappointed. 'I guess he's worried it's not going to mean as much killing me if I'm not able to put up a decent fight.'
"It means that if you don't stop looking at me like that I'm going to put my fist through your face. You wouldn't understand it even if I tried to explain."
Sasuke didn't say a word. They continued walking in silence.
~~~~
Sasuke had known his brother to be a man of action instead of words. He was more than a little shocked that his brother had threatened to put his fist through his face instead of actually putting his fist through his face. 'Maybe he knows I would fight back. Maybe he thinks I could win a fight with him right now.' He stepped a little closer to his brother, seeing if any of the weapons he was carrying were in a grabbable position.
"Don't even think about little brother."
Sasuke moved a few steps away. Maybe his brother hadn't lost it enough yet to be easy prey, but he would soon. Sasuke could feel it. The man walking before him was crumbling. That thought wasn't nearly as comforting as he had thought it would be. This wasn't the way it was supposed to happen. Sasuke had daydreamed about killing his brother for so long that he had a fairly elaborate scene in his head. They were in a huge field, and there was lightening and thunder, and the Earth was shaking a little beneath their feet. The fight would be fierce, and Itachi would think that he had won. He would have thrown Sasuke aside and stepped over to him to give him one last kick when Sasuke would grab his leg, flip him to the ground and cut off his head all in one fluid motion.
It was his favorite thing to think about... well, maybe his second favorite thing to think about. Somehow in the last year, thoughts of Naruto would pop into his head just as often as thoughts about revenge. Naruto. He really hadn't allowed himself to think about him too much. If he did, he would get a sick feeling in his stomach and a dark ache in his heart. In just a few days it would be their one-year anniversary. He wondered if Naruto, as the kyuubi, would have any recollection of that. Would he remember that first night?
~~~~
"Where's Naruto? It's time to start opening my presents! I'll open yours first Sasuke-kun!" Ino eyed him happily. He was surprised she'd even remembered that Naruto was here. Sakura was right; Ino really could be a selfish pig.
"I'll go find him." Sasuke stood up, glad for the excuse to leave the room.
"Can you round up Neji and Shikamaru while you're at it?" she piped up.
Sasuke nodded. Apparently the only thing more appealing to her than him, were all the gifts piled at her feet. She hadn't even objected to his leaving. Sasuke walked upstairs and opened several doors, peaking in and then moving on to the next. He checked every door on this level when he heard a soft whimper from the second door he had opened. It was a walk in linen closet so he hadn't given it more than a quick glance.
"Dobe, is that you?"
A washcloth hit him in the face and he stepped in and shut the door. He swung his arm in front of him, catching the string that turned on the light. The room glowed and for the first time he noticed a slightly shaking bundle of sheets and blankets in the corner.
"Are you playing hide and seek?" He asked harshly. "C'mon. We need to get back downstairs."
He heard a soft choking sound and the blankets started shaking. It pissed him off that Naruto would be giggling at him and so he kicked the pile. This time there was no mistaking the sound coming from beneath it. Naruto was crying. Sasuke dug through the pile and Naruto put up no fight. By the time he had uncovered him Naruto was only softly whimpering. This wasn't exactly familiar territory for him, but he did know how to comfort a person who was crying. He sat down at Naruto's side and waited.
"You should go back downstairs. Someone will miss you." Naruto said, putting all of them emphasis on the word “you”.
"Is this about Sakura's comment? She can be such a bitch sometimes. You know how she is."
"It's not about that. It didn't help, but it's not about that."
"Then what's it about?" Sasuke hadn't expected his voice to sound so concerned, but it seemed natural. He was concerned, after all.
"Just leave me alone!" Naruto shoved Sasuke hard and then clambered back into the corner under some additional blankets.
"I'm not leaving, so you might as well tell me."
The room was silent for almost ten minutes. The only sounds were stifled sobs that came and went occasionally.
"You don't care. You're only staying up here because you're stubborn."
"I care."
Naruto's head popped out from under the sheets and he gave Sasuke a glare that could rival his own.
"Don't lie to me, Sasuke." He emphasized every syllable. He was very clearly pissed.
"I'm not lying, dobe. I care. I really do."
Naruto eyed him carefully. It seemed sincere.
"Why? Why would you care? Why would anyone care?" Naruto had melted into tears once more. This was awful. Sasuke had never seen his friend like this. He was soft spoken and fragile... not at all like the Naruto he knew. Well, except that he'd never been sure he knew the real Naruto in the first place. Maybe this was evidence that that was true.
"I care because you're my friend."
Naruto seemed to ponder this and Sasuke knew he must have believed him because he didn't dive back under the covers. Sasuke plopped down next to him and leaned gently on the boy. When he felt bad, human contact of any kind usually made him feel better.
"Now will you tell me why you came up here?"
Naruto nodded.
"I... It's just... No one has ever celebrated my birthday. It's in a little over two weeks, and I came up here because I was sad and I didn't want to watch Ino open her presents, or hear people sing her Happy Birthday. You know I've never heard my name put into that song?"
Sasuke didn't know that. He didn't think much of birthdays honestly, but he remembered that the birthdays from his childhood had been happy ones.
"I'm sorry. We can do something for your birthday. I'll buy you a cake. I'm sure Sakura would throw you a party if I asked her to."
"But it would be for you, not for me. No one cares enough to do it for me."
"I just said that I did."
"You just feel sorry for me."
"I feel sorry that I'm a lousy friend who has never acknowledged your birthday."
"You aren't a lousy friend." Naruto turned to face Sasuke. He hadn't meant for someone else to take the blame for this. It was his own fault he had no friends. It was his own fault he'd never had a birthday party. It was his fault. It was always his fault.
Sasuke looked into Naruto's blue eyes. He looked so sad, and something in Sasuke stirred. There was warmth in the pit of his stomach and it slowly etched its way up his body. He'd known for a long time that he was attracted to Naruto. This felt different though. It wasn't lust. He wanted Naruto to realize he was cared for. He leaned in close. Naruto's lips were softer than he had imagined and he leaned in closer, inhaling the soapy scent of the younger boy's cheek. Naruto pushed back a little and stumbled to his feet.
"What are you doing?" His tone was accusatory and Sasuke was at a loss for words. He didn't know what he was doing. He stood up and reached for Naruto, drawing him close.
"I guess I was trying to show you that I care... alot." Naruto looked at him but didn't move. He looked like he was seeing something for the first time. This time it was him that made the first move. He pushed Sasuke back into the wall and kissed him fiercely.
Sasuke didn't fight it and soon they were grabbing at each other and kissing so hard that their lips were swollen. Neither had ever experienced this with anyone else before and they were desperate not to let it go. Sasuke couldn't believe how good this felt. He felt alive. He felt needed. He felt wanted. The grabbing that Naruto was doing let Sasuke know that he felt the same thing. It took him a minute to react when the door opened and he realized they had been seen. Sasuke wanted to let go of Naruto but he couldn't. His mouth was so warm. His eyes glanced up and he noticed Neji smirking at him. The door closed again and both boys heard Neji say "Nope, empty. Let's try this door."
"Shit, he's going to tell everyone." Naruto gasped.
"Not at the moment, he's not. It looked like he was trying to find a place where he could do what we're doing."
"You don't care that he knows?" Naruto was worried that Sasuke was going to freak out and leave him.
"I'm not leaving if that's what you're scared of. Let them find out. I want this. I want you." He sat back down on the blankets and pulled Naruto down with him. "Now let's try this lying down. That's how it is in all the movies."
It was hard to believe that had been a year ago. He had to save his friend at any cost. Even at the cost of missing a chance to kill Itachi. Naruto was just too important to lose.
~~~~
He had been walking down the streets minding his own business when he saw a face he recognized. There were rumors that Itachi had captured Naruto, Uchiha and Hyuuga about a week ago, but here he was walking around Sand big as you please. Obviously he was up to no good because he was using that stupid "Sexy No Jutsu" move that Naruto seemed to think was so funny. He didn't like Uchiha and he didn't like his relationship with Naruto. 'If he thinks he's going to walk around this village at night, trying to hide who he is, I'm not going to let him get away with it. The disguise is horrible anyway. If he's going to make himself look like a girl, it might be best if he made himself look like a girl that wasn't so obviously him. Apparently Naruto hasn't impressed that lesson on him properly.' He caught up to the boy quickly and grabbed him by the wrist.
"What are you doing here Uchiha?"
"How do you know who I am?" she hissed. There was no recognition in her eyes, but he was convinced.
"Drop the act, Sasuke. What are you doing here?" he growled.
"Sasuke is my brother you idiot. If you don't get your hand off me now you're going to be sorry."
"Are you going to make me sorry?" He tightened his grip on the wrist and this time Mina cried out.
Naruto was on them in a flash and the boy who had grabbed her wrist looked like he was about to pass out.
~~~~
They had walked maybe half a block before Neji heard Mina cry out to his right, a few steps behind him. Someone had a hold of her wrist but he couldn't see who it was.
Naruto turned around at the same time, but instead of taking in the situation like Neji had done, he jumped quickly at her attacker and spun him around.
"Gaara?"
"Naruto????"~~~~
