It was as hot as ever in the Wind Country and, much to Hinata’s own shock, she’d missed the heat.
They’d entered Suna without a hitch, Shikamaru splitting from her and making a beeline for Temari’s place.
Hinata would have liked to head toward the Kazekage’s main building too but since coming into Suna she hadn’t been able to take more than a few steps at a time without someone flagging her down for a chat. It couldn’t be helped; she’d recognised the people too and found herself asking about them as well.
Everyone asked the same question; was she back for good this time? The question was burned into the back of her mind too. It made her remember the letter she’d left for her father.
It had been quite a short one in the end. For a letter stating she was leaving Konoha for good it really held little sentiment. A simple goodbye and she was out of words. She hadn’t even stated where she was going. After all, not even she knew if she would be well received in Suna by the one person that mattered.

The weeks had passed painstakingly slow. After Gaara’s ill advised excursion to Konoha his own ANBU had been watching him like he was a flighty bird that had learnt how to get out of its cage. Not that he could blame them. Even now with five ANBU stationed outside his office and three more hovering on the roof outside his office window, he was thinking of a way to dispatch them without injuring them or causing a big scene. He’d made a promise to himself that he’d go get Hinata. Willing to use any means possible without causing an all out war between the two villages.
He’d already figured he’d be going through the window, there were less people stationed there and he had a better chance of getting past them without raising any sort of alarm. First he would send out a clone to distract them, then his sand would follow, wrapping them in a cocoon and applying enough pressure to the right point to render them unconscious. After that it was just a matter of keeping to the shadows and remaining undetected until he could reach the border of the village.
The plan formulated and his resolve strengthening, he headed to the window just as a knock came at the door.
“I’m busy,” he said calmly, not turning around. Gently he eased the window open and –
“Busy trying to get out of work?” a soft voice asked. The voice that had been haunting his dreams for weeks now, only this voice was real.
Gaara spun around, shock effusing his entire being. “H-Hinata?!” he gasped.
“I didn’t believe the council members,” she continued, ignoring his outburst, “who told me you’d been neglecting your work for weeks in pursuit of some other train of thought but here I am being proven wrong before even speaking to you.”
“Wha- How? I mean, why are you here?! How did you get here? What is going on?!!”
Hinata’s only response was to say, “You were the one to encourage me to enter the Jounin exam. Did you forget it was being held in Suna this year?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After that words seemed entirely unnecessary. Gaara had walked Hinata out of his office and off to his bedroom, ignoring his ANBU who suddenly began pretending they hadn’t noticed exactly what Gaara’s intentions were. Hastily they muttered excuses and made themselves scarce.
All the while, Hinata who was being carried caveman style over his shoulder, squealed in embarrassment. And then they were in his room, under the covers and as far as anyone else was concerned, neither party surfaced until the beginning of the Jounin exam.
