Standing in the entrance way of the cave, Sasuke stood while clenching the Sword of Kusanagi. The tense arms had several deep gashes, a line of dried blood was crusted from a corner of the lower lip down past the chin. The white kimono top had may rips and tears. With torches as the only source of light, Madara stood over Naruto's unconscious body as it was laid out on a stone slab, closely resembling a coffin. The mask had been nearly broken in half and continued to crumble, showing parts of the aged and scarred face of the oldest of the two remaining Uchiha members. "Let. Him. Go."
Sasuke's voice was horse as he spoke, and as the eyes glowed with the black and red Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan activated. Madara only smirked as he held a tagged kunai in his hand. The attention moved from Sasuke back to Naruto. The blond was already bleeding out from saving Sasuke, from an attack earlier that nearly killed him. It was when Sasuke was so filled with rage, he was fighting his only friend, and Madara took advantage of the situation. Purposely pushing Sasuke to start a fight, it was a marvelous distraction. He waited, bidding his time as he edged Sasuke on from the high ground. "You're better than him, Sasuke. You know this. You don't need this filth dragging you down." "Shut up, you creepy old man!" Naruto looked up to yell, foolishly. It was a stop that nearly got his head taken off by Sasuke. "Shut up and fight me!" Sasuke ran forward, his Chidori charged. "Shit..." Naruto had no other choice, and ran to meet with his own Rassengan. Just before they touched, Madara took his chance. Intercepting the two boys, he moved to attack and meant to spear Sasuke, but Naruto had noticed. Pushing Sasuke out of the way, the blond had taking the sword into his chest, using his body to protect Sasuke as he always did. It was that moment, even though Naruto was run through, did his words finally reach his friend. With a hand holding both the blade and Madara in place, Naruto asked Sasuke if he was alright. Shocked, Sasuke nodded, slowly looking down at the blade dripping with blood that impaled Naruto's chest. It was only seconds away from a stab that would have pierced Sasuke's own heart. Smiling, Naruto reached to touch Sasuke's pale cheek, his fingers covered with his own blood. "I'm glad..." Fear made Sasuke unable to move from the protection he was under. The blue eyes turned, narrowing themselves to Madara. "You need me alive to take out Kyuubi, don't you? Take me and leave Sasuke alone. You don't have a use for him anymore." Smirking, Madara's mask crumbled a little more to show the wicked grin on his lips. "Fair enough." Pulling, the blade was retracted and the squishing splattered Sasuke's stunned face. "Sorry...Sasuke...this is the only thing I can do for you..." Slowly, Sasuke tried to reach out for his friend, but in a swirl of blackness, the enemy and friend disappeared. The shock left Sasuke unable to comprehend what just happened. "Sasuke! Sasuke!" Sakura ran to his side, grabbing his shoulders to shake him. The dark eyes refocused, as if unaware of his surroundings. "Sasuke! Where did he take him?! Sasuke!" "...Why...Why did he save me...Just like that...After everything I've done..." "Sasuke!" "Why?! Why did he save me?!" The pink haired woman softened her eyes, her tone changed as well. The man she loved was nearly hysterical before her eyes. "Because...he's your friend. Nothing else matters to him, but you. Nothing else matter to me, but you. I love you..." Looking away, Sasuke began to calm down. "He...would take Naruto to...I have to stop him. He'll release the nine tails and kill Naruto...I have too..." Standing up, Sasuke's strength wavered. "You can't, Sasuke. You used up most of your charka. Your eyes are bleeding.." Pushing Sakura away, Sasuke shook his head. "I'm fine. I'm going to stop this.." "Wait...Sasuke....Sasuke!" But it was too late for Sakura to continue her cries. With a similar engulfing in a black swirl, her love had disappeared from her sight. After fighting his way through tunnels littered with abominations of desecrated corpses, Sasuke finally reached the sacrificial room. The tagged kunai the masked man held was driven like a stake into Naruto's heart, as Sasuke could only watch. "It doesn't matter anymore..." Naruto gasped for air, his body convulsing as the cloak of the nine tail over took him. Laughing, Madara watched and stood, as the fiery red form overcame his body, burning it into ashes. The remain of Madara swirled, mixing into Kyuubi's shadow. The redness turned black, absorbing and twisting with the other demons who were being held captive in the great statue. Staring, Sasuke saw it, the rage that Naruto held back for so many years. The black lips, the wicked grin of Kyuubi, finally appeared as yellow eyes opened. Somewhere near the center, Naruto's body was hovering in its core. The Sharingan eyes narrowed, readied to fight. Black claws attacked, chasing Sasuke around the cave. He ducked, flipped, and ran across the walls while slashing them away, only to be multiplied like the head of the hydra. The slightest of scratches would sear Sasuke's flesh and burn away any clothing. It wasn't long before Kyuubi seemed to tire of the chasing and formed a large black ball. Puzzled, Sasuke wasn't sure what it was, until it exploded. The mushroom cloud could be seen from a great distance, as it blew the cave away. The sun was setting and Sasuke had no choice but to summon it again. Using the last bit of the chakra, Susano-o was called upon. The battle between the two Gods was brutal, as Susano-o slashed away at Kyuubi. Flares surrounded the battlefield, charcoaling the forest around them, but not even the might of the Uchiha could stand against the combined demons. A black hand reached through Susano-o's chest, grabbing Sasuke's body from the center of the summoned warrior. The great summon flickered before vanishing, as the hand of Kyuubi squeezed Sasuke helplessly. "Na.Naruto. ARGH! NARUTO!" From the depths of Kyuubi, the young ninja slowly opened his blue eyes. He could feel it, Sasuke's life slowly slipping away. "...Sas...uke.." Looking down, Naruto saw the kunai which impaled him, the source of what was breaking the seal. It was plunged into his heart, and removing it meant death...but it also meant saving Sasuke's life. Without hesitation, he put a hand around the handle, slowly pulling it out. The pain was indescribable, and as he cried out in pain, so did Kyuubi. Sasuke was dropped as Kyuubi's strength faltered and hit the ground. Looking up, the Mangekyō Sharingan eyes could only watch as Naruto slowly killed himself. "Naruto! Stop! You'll die!" Looking down, Naruto acknowledge that he heard what Sasuke has said, but didn't stop. With the final pull, Kyuubi vanished as the enormous chakra retreated back into Naruto's body. The kunai was dropped and Naruto fell to the ground in a thud. "Naruto!" Sasuke crawled over to the bloody corpse, unable to stand. He only managed pull on burned plants and rocks, dragging his battered form. After arriving, Sasuke straddled his friend. "Naruto...Naruto, open your eyes!" Sasuke continued to shake the body, tears flowing from his eyes. As Naruto laid on a growing puddle of blood, there was a peaceful look on his face. He had died, without regrets. The yellow hair soaked some of the red, highlighting its tips deep red as Sasuke continued to cry. It was as if he had lost his brother all over again. No, this was worse. "You can't...you promised me we'd go home together. You're going to be Hokage, right? That's why...That's why you can't be dead here...I'm sorry...I'm so sorry..." Clinging to the ruined orange and black jacket, Sasuke buried his face in the stabbed chest. He didn't know how long he was there before Sakura and Kakashi arrived. Gaara, Neji, Sai, Hinata, and Shikimaru weren't too far behind. Everyone stopped to stare at the sight of Naruto being mourned so heavily by the same boy who wanted to destroy the world. Madara and Kabuto were nowhere to be found, and the cavern was destroyed. Kakashi was first to step forward, pulling Sasuke off the body, and to everyone's surprise, Naruto's hand had a grip on Sasuke's sleeve. Covered in Naruto's blood and his own tears, he wasn't sure if he fought or said anything as Sakura rushed over. With her ear to his chest, she smiled in relief as tears came out of those large, soft-green eyes. "He's alive." "What?" Kakashi let Sasuke go, who had stopped struggling. Returning to Naruto's side, he looked to Sakura. "He's alive? Are you sure?" The pink haired girl only nodded, busying herself with her pack. She worked fast and quickly, her chakra healing him as she bandaged the large wound. Sasuke helped as best he could, even lifting Naruto to his own back to carry him. Those that came over to help were scolded. "I have him...Let's go..." Sasuke felt it again, the slightest of grips Naruto gave as he held onto Sasuke's kimono. That alone gave him the strength to carry him. It was nearly three weeks that Naruto spent in the hospital in the Hidden Leaf Village. Sasuke, though under 'arrest', did not leave his side for more than a few moments at time. He barely ate, slept, or moved away from the bedside. He watched quietly over every procedure and change of bandages, held his hand, and spoke softly into Naruto's ear. All the rage inside of Sasuke that consumed him to such deeds was pacified. The fire in Sasuke's eyes was long gone, as was the color. The once intense obsidian gaze was now a fogged over gray, reflecting Sasuke's soul. He was a shell of his former self, as if burned from the inside out. At the end of the third week, Naruto finally opened his eyes to respond to Sasuke. "I'm not mad, so stop apologizing..." Pausing, Sasuke stopped speaking to stare. Turning his head, Naruto smiled in his usual way, squeezing back to Sasuke's hand holding. "It was nice of you to keep me company...I would of been bored with no one to talk too...Ow...still sore..." Sasuke had leaned over, practically crawling on top of his friend to hug him. Laughing, the blond came up to rub his back as Sasuke sobbed. "There, there..." It didn't take long for Sakura to walk by and notice that Naruto was awake. The news spread and soon everyone was there, but Sasuke still remained, protectively watching. It wasn't as if Naruto would let him out of sight either. Once on the mend, the charges were finally dropped by the Elders, under the condition that Gaara kept them both out of the village. Sakura was so upset...Looking back, it was easy to see how she had fallen. Of all she did to help, only to be shut out yet again from their lives.. Author's Notes: Thanks to everyone who came back to read this story. Sorry about the long wait! I suck at math and I'm stuck in a math class for school. Eats away at any creative juices! To solve any confusion, this is before the first story in the Desert series, describing the battle which brought Sasuke back. Actually inspired a bit by this fan art picture I found, which I thought was so damn touching and true to their characters.
