Here's the next chapter. I struggled for a long as to who Itachi was going to take to the opera. Naruto won in the end. I respond to reviews here: http:xiophelia.livejournal.com
~~ Naruto tried to control his shaking hands as he held the envelope out to Itachi. He smiled at his boss as pale hands grabbed the envelope and opened it. Itachi’s lips drew up into a small smile. Dark eyes settled on Naruto and the blond shifted his feet. “I’ve been wanting tickets to this show for weeks. How were able to get a pair? I can‘t take these.” Itachi’s voice was soft as he tried to hand the tickets back. “I had help. But it’s my thank you for helping with everything lately. None of it would have been possible without you.” Naruto said as he smiled brightly. “I did that for you because I wanted to, not for something in return.” “Please, just take these tickets as my thanks.” Itachi sighed. “Very well Naruto. Would you like to attend the show with me?” “I can’t that night. Konohamaru has a parent/teacher conference I can’t get out of. But I didn’t buy those tickets for you just to take me. You can take anyone you want. Sasuke said something about a friend of yours coming in?” “Ah yes, Kisame. He would enjoy this. Thank you again Naruto.” Itachi said as he tucked the tickets into a pocket of his suit. “It’s no problem. It’s a small gift compared to what you’ve given me.” “Nonsense. I did right by you Naruto. I’m just confused as to why you put all that money into a trust fund for Konohamaru?” Itachi asked as both men took a seat in the office. “Because I had to go to a local college. I want Konohamaru to go to the best university out there or at least use the money for something that’s sensible. He can only touch it if he goes to college at eighteen. If he doesn’t go to college he’s not allowed to touch it until he’s twenty-three. I don’t want him to waste it.” The blond explained as he brought up his e-mail for the day. “I see, that’s a smart move on your part.” “I want him to make his own decisions, but I also don’t want him to be taken for everything he has either. That’s why I made it that he couldn’t touch until he’s twenty-three. No gold digger will wait that long.” Naruto said as he clicked on the new e-mail in his inbox. “Father did something similar for Sasuke and I. But I haven’t found a partner while Sasuke has that dumb mutt.” “Kiba is stupid, but he truly does love the bastard.” Naruto let the familiar nickname slip. “So Sasuke wasn’t lying about you using that nickname.” Itachi murmured. “Ah crap! I’m sorry! It won’t slip out again! I can’t believe I did that!” The blond moaned as he hit head on his keyboard. “It’s quite alright Naruto. I know you didn’t let it slip on purpose.” “Yeah, it’s just natural.” “Now you’re sure that Kiba truly loves my brother?” “Yeah. Kiba wouldn’t have proposed if he didn’t. He may be dumb at times, but his heart is in the right place.” The blond said as he smiled wistfully. “You wish for the same thing don’t you.” Itachi stated with interest. “Who doesn’t? But Neji really did a number on me and Mizuki won’t leave me alone. And with Konohamaru it’s just not a good time for a relationship.” Naruto answered, his head still on the keyboard. “I see, so you’re content with your life right now?” “Pretty much, I can’t really ask for more. Love can wait for later.” “And what if you miss it?” Itachi asked curiously. Naruto pulled his face from the keyboard and sat up, shrugging. “I have a lot of friends in my life who love me. So I really wouldn’t miss out on love I guess.” “You would. Just because you have people who love you, doesn’t mean that their love will fill the void. Think on that.” Naruto didn’t have a reply to that. He knew that Itachi was right, but he didn’t want to admit it, so he went back to checking his e-mail. He skimmed over the one that had made it to his inbox, it was nothing important so he deleted it. The silence that filled the room was awkward. Naruto knew that ignoring his boss wasn’t the best way to go about it, but he honestly didn’t want to think on what he had said. The blond knew that he thrived on love and the attention from others, but the attention he craved the most was from someone who loved him and only him. It was something he wished for ever since he was a teenager and couldn’t get a date because of who he was. So of course when Neji had shown an interest in him, Naruto had jumped on that opportunity. And he had never felt better than when the older man had paid him attention. It was a wonderful relationship as far as Naruto was concerned. But Sasuke didn’t see that way. The blond guessed that he should have listened. But that was in the past and everything was done and over with. He continued his work without another word to his boss. ~~ Naruto nervously waited outside of the classroom. This was his first parent/teacher conference ever and he wanted it go right. Konohamaru was at the arts festival that was taking place right now, supervised by the teachers that didn’t have parents at the moment. He remembered that after his parents had come back from a conference, they were disappointed in him. The door opened and a parent exited the room, they didn’t even glance in his direction. Another person appeared at the door and Naruto smiled at them. “Hello there, I’m Naruto Uzumaki, Konohamaru’s guardian.” The other person accepted his hand. “I’m Ebisu, Konoahmaru’s teacher come on in, there are some issues I’d like to discuss.” Naruto could feel a knot forming in his stomach. He knew that whatever this teacher had to say, it was going to be bad news. Naruto settled himself in the chair in front of the teacher’s desk and tried not to glance at the papers that littered the desk. He didn’t want to come off as nosy and he was sure that some of the papers were not Konohamaru’s. He didn’t want to intrude on the privacy of others. Ebisu took the seat behind the teachers desk and didn’t say anything for a few moments. It was as if the man was trying to find the right words to say. “I’m concerned about Konohamaru. Before the accident he was always so full of life and enjoying time with his friends. But now, he’s more withdrawn and the pranks have become more than harmless.” Naruto’s head whipped up in surprise. “Pranks?” Ebisu’s expression was one of confusion. “Did you not get the letters that I sent home with Konohamaru?” “No, I’ve never seen any letters.” The blond answered. Ebisu sighed. “That means that Konohamaru has been forging your signature somehow. He’s been pranking teachers ever since the third grade, but they were harmless and he wasn’t punished severely for them. But now, they’ve had a more harmful effect. I figured that you didn’t care since you didn’t respond with any responses, only signing.” Naruto felt different emotions well up within him. He had been hoping that Konohamaru was dealing with school better since he wasn’t receiving any reports on bad behavior. He really should have known better. It had been too good to be true. His face became serious. “I assure you that I was not aware of this problem.” “I believe you Mr. Uzumaki. I’m at a loss as to what to do. He had a meeting with the school counselor. But he wouldn’t talk. I know his parents death has effected him greatly, but his learning is suffering.” “I understand. I’ll have a talk with him when we get home. Is there anything else?” “Not really. His grades have been steadily dropping, but not to a dangerous level. He is still putting some attempt into it.” “I see. Like I said I’ll have a talk with him. Is there any possible way that you can e-mail a list of his homework assignments? I would ask that you send them home with him, but I doubt I’d get them.” Naruto suggested. “That’s actually not a bad idea,” Ebisu said as he rooted through his desk for a pen and a piece of paper. When he found the supplies he handed them to the blond. Naruto quickly jotted his e-mail address down and handed back with a smile. “I’ll make sure that he does his homework first thing when he gets home. And thank you Ebisu for talking to me about this problem.” “You’re welcome. I hope to see Konohamaru improve over the next few weeks. He still has time to bring his grades up.” The man said as he stood and offered his hand to Naruto. The blond took the offered hand and shook it, happy that they had worked something out to deal with Konohamaru. He only hoped that this plan worked. The blond turned away from the teacher and made his way out of the room, leaving the door open for the next parents. Naruto felt the tension well up within him as he entered the hallway. He knew that the conversation he would have to have with Konohamaru would be a hard one. He only hoped that the kid would listen to him. Naruto didn’t believe in physical punishment, so he would have to come up with some other punishment. But he wasn’t quite sure what yet. He could take away the X Box, but he doubted that would help with Konohamaru’s behavior. When the blond came to the gym, he stopped at the doors and watched the little fair that was going on inside. The school had decided to make at least make the parent/teacher conferences fun by having an arts festival, something that both parents and children could enjoy. Plus it would give the children something to do while the parent was in the conference. Blue eyes found Konohamaru over on the bleachers. The kid was watching everyone else have fun with their parents, showing off their artwork to the proud mothers and fathers. Naruto could see the pain and wistfulness in the brown gaze that followed the people. Naruto wished that he could bring Asuma and Kurenai back, he really did. He hated to see the child suffer so much. But he was Konohamaru’s guardian now and he would do everything in his power to make the child happy. With a determined gait, Naruto made his way to the bleachers where the brunet sat. He gently sat down beside Konohamaru, not saying anything as he watched the children and parents. “Well, how much trouble am I in?” Konohamaru asked, not even glancing at his guardian. The blond sighed. “A lot. But I want to talk about this.” “I figured you’d say that,” the kid huffed as he perched his elbows on his knees and rested his chin in his palms. “I want you to stop these dangerous pranks Konohamaru. I don’t mind the harmless ones, but if you’re hurting people, then that is unacceptable. I haven’t come up with a suitable punishment for you yet, but I will think of something.” Naruto explained as he leaned back on the bench behind him. “And about your schoolwork, Ebisu will be e-mailing me your assignments everyday. You will do them when you first come home, that way you wont’ be up all night. And if you have to go to Sakura’s, then I expect the same thing. You can always ask me for help like before. And even Sakura too.” Konohamaru was silent. Naruto turned his head to the kid and was surprised to find a look of determination plastered on his face. “I will do my Dad proud. I’ve been wasting time.” Naruto didn’t know what to say to that, so he just patted the kid’s shoulder. “Are you ready to go home? Or do you want to stay a bit longer?” “I just want to go home. I don’t have a project in the festival to show off,” Konohamaru replied as he stood and grabbed his backpack, shifting it onto his shoulder. “I know you’re supposed to be in trouble, but you want pizza on the way home?” Naruto asked as he removed himself from the bleacher. “Would I ever!” Konohamaru exclaimed as Naruto ruffled his hair. ~~ It was the dinner rush as they arrived to Pizza World, but they were quickly seated despite that fact. Naruto grinned as Konohamaru didn’t even look through the menu. The kid always ordered the same thing, a personal pan pizza with anchovies, sausage, and extra cheese. Naruto found the combination disgusting, but didn’t say anything to the boy. When the waitress came around, they both her gave their orders and thanked her before she left. The noise in the pizzeria was loud, but comforting. The children were at the arcade section playing the games and generally having a good time while their parents kept an ever watchful eye on them. “Naruto! It’s fancy meeting you here!” A female voice jolted him out of his thoughts. He looked up and was met with the sight of Temari and Gaara. The redhead didn’t look very pleased to have his sister’s arm around him. “Hey guys! You can sit with us if you want!” Naruto said as he scooted over the booth, Konohamaru following his example. “Nah, I just wanted to stop and say hi!” Temari said as she drug her lost brother closer to her body. “And thank you so much for reuniting me and my brother. I can’t believe that you knew the two of us!” The blond smiled sheepishly. “It was no problem, it was just a hell of a coincidence.” “We’re gonna stop by your place later, but I thought we’d just stop by and say hey.” Temari said before she whirled around and began to drag Gaara with her, the redhead giving Naruto a ‘help me’ look. The blond only chuckled as the two siblings scampered off. He was glad that Gaara had found his family, but he couldn’t help but find amusement in the fact that he was related to Temari and Kankorou. Of course Gaara didn’t find his predicament as amusing as Naruto did. The redhead wasn’t used to affection of any kind except from Naruto. So the blond knew that he was having issues dealing with the overly affectionate Temari who just liked to cuddle anything she deemed as cute. “Your friends are weird.” Konohamaru said as he swung his feet under the table. Naruto chuckled. “But you like them anyway.” “Yeah, I do!” The kid said as he smiled brightly. Naruto smiled in return. It seemed as though everyone was leaving at this point in time, the background noise dwindling to just a few families that were still there. Pizza World was one of the few family friendly restaurants in town and it was normally busy no matter what time of day it was. Of course it did help that it had an arcade attached to it where the kids could go play and parents could relax for a little while. It was only a few minutes later when their food arrived and Naruto couldn’t help but drool at the fine sub that was placed in front of him. He was polite enough for the waitress to leave before he began to dig in. He had been starving since before the parent/conference. Then he heard a familiar voice amongst the few families that were still there. He placed the sub back down onto the plate and began to scout the area for the source of the voice. But he didn’t see it, shrugging Naruto went back to his food, blissfully unaware that there was a person standing right behind. Konohamaru tried not to laugh at the man that was standing behind Naruto. He didn’t want to give the other away, so he kept eating, swinging his legs as he did so. He couldn’t wait to see how Naruto would react once the presence made itself known. “My, my Naruto, I see that you’re having fun at that conference.” The blond jumped at the sound of his boss’s voice. He dropped his sub to his plate and quickly whirled around, his confused blue eyes meeting dark amused ones. “Well…it ended early so I brought Konohamaru here for dinner!” The blond said nervously as he rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, his tone was apologetic. But he couldn’t help but think how good his boss looked in the black tailored suit that seemed to hug him in all the right places and his long coat hanging over his arm. “I see. Well do you mind if we sit with you? Kisame demanded that we eat here.” The Uchiha said distastefully as he draped his coat over the back of the booth and sat down after the blond made more room. “Kisame?” Naruto asked confused. “Oh your friend! He’s here too?” The blond head whipped around the room, trying to spot someone unfamiliar. Itachi chuckled. “He’ll be joining us in a moment, he had to use the restroom.” “Ah, so are you on your way to the opera after this?” Naruto asked curiously as he took a sip from his drink. “Yes we are. I can’t thank you enough for getting me the tickets.” Itachi said as he looked at the blond. “But I am in your debt for allowing me to take Kisame.” Naruto placed his drink on the table and waved his hands. “I told you I was busy and that I couldn’t accompany you. I really don’t mind!” He said blushing. “You must let me return this favor somehow Naruto,” the Uchiha said as he leaned closer to the blushing blond. “No! This was my thank you for helping my uncle! Thanks to you, they’re looking for him to be released later this month! I couldn’t accept anything you got me!” The blond answered, determination evident in his vibrant blue eyes. Itachi sighed. “Very well if you’re that adamant about it then I won’t pester you any longer. How are you today Konohamaru?” Itachi asked turning his attention to the youngest person at the table. “I’m fine!” Konohamaru answered with a smile. “How about you?” “Very well. I trust that you haven’t been having any trouble with your studies?” “Um…not really.” Konohamaru answered lowly. Itachi could tell that the child was uncomfortable so he stopped asking him questions. He didn’t mean to cause him discomfort. He was merely curious. Konohamaru was a good kid and he would hate to see all of that potential go to waste. Of course he would get the full story from Naruto tomorrow at work. “There you are! I’ve been looking around for you!” A deep voice with a thick Italian accent said. Naruto’s head shot up at the accent and looked at the man that had approached their table. He was tall, dark skinned, and devishly handsome. His eyes were a chocolate brown that sparkled with laughter. His hair was a bluish black color that stuck up. Naruto knew that next to this man, he couldn’t compare. “There you are Kisame! I have some people I would like you to meet.” Itachi greeted as the man sat down in the space that Konohamaru given him. “To my right is Naruto Uzumaki, my new personal assistant. And the young man beside you is his godson, Konohamaru Sarutobi. Naruto, Konohamaru this is my friend, Kisame Hoshigaki.” “It’s a pleasure to meet you!” Naruto said as he extended his hand to the other. Kisame grinned as he took the blonds’ hand and shook it. The Uzumaki noticed that the others hand was quite smooth and soft. “Same here. I’ve heard a lot about you from Itachi. Seems like you’re the most competent assistant he’s had in ages.” Kisame said as he leaned back and crossed his arms. “I don’t see the point in having a job you can’t perform efficiently at,” the blond answered, feeling as though Kisame was grilling him. “You have spunk! I like that!” The Italian laughed heartily. “I think you might be a handful.” “I’m not a handful! I know how to behave!” The blond shouted back, a scowl on his face. Kisame laughed harder. “Ah I guess you do if you’re in the office. So tell me, why were you so kind as to give your ticket to me?” Naruto diverted his eyes away from the brown ones that were looking at him so intently. “As I told Itachi,” he ignored the ‘on first name basis with your boss’ from the other man. “I wasn’t able to attend the opera because of the parent/teacher conference.” “But you’re here now! You could have been done in enough time.” Kisame argued. “I didn’t know that the conference would be short. And besides, you would have to factor in getting showered and ready. I would not have had enough time for that.” Naruto glared at the man. “You’re making excuses,” Kisame sung. “I am not!” Naruto growled. “You can still go to the opera now if you wanted. While you may not be dressed for it, you can still enjoy it.” The Italian suggested as he leaned forward, a challenge in his eyes. “And who would watch my kid?” Naruto asked as he stubbornly stared the man down. “Why, I would of course! I think me and the kid will get along famously.” Kisame said as he swung an arm around Konohamaru and pulled the kid close. “Kisame please behave yourself. I’m perfectly fine going to the opera with you,” Itachi said as he pinned his friend with a glare. “Fine! I’ll go to the opera with Itachi! Konohamaru can show you the way to the apartment and he has a spare set of keys! Here’s the key to my car, get one scratch on it and you’re a dead man!” Naruto said as something inside him snapped and he threw the key at the other man. Konohmaru was happy to have been released from the Italian’s hold. He gave a small smile to Naruto in thanks. He turned his head to yell at the man but was stopped from doing so when he noticed a conniving smile cross the man’s lips. “Hey there! Do you two want to order?” The waitress asked as she broke up the four way glaring match. Itachi and Kisame quickly gave their orders and the table fell silent. “If you’re gonna take care of Konohamaru while I’m gone, there are a few rules that need to be followed.” Naruto said as he pinned Kisame with a hardened blue stare. “The only reason I’m trusting you with him is because you’re a friend of Itachi and he seems to respect you. The first rule is that Konohamaru must do his homework as soon as he gets home. Then he has to do his chores after that. If there is any free time after that he may spend as he chooses. But he has to be in bed by eight thirty.” “No problem,” the man gave a toothy grin. And Naruto had a feeling that he wouldn’t have an apartment left tonight. ~~ The night had become cool as Itachi and Naruto left the theatre. The blond pulled his thin jacket around his shoulders and shivered at the cool breeze that blew around him. He had not brought a heavy jacket because he thought for sure that he wouldn’t be out past dark. But Kisame had to go and provoke him. He couldn’t believe that he was so easily manipulated and by a stranger no less! “Did you enjoy the show Naruto?” Itachi asked from beside him. “Yeah I did. I’ve never been to an opera before so it was a great first experience.” The blond smiled brightly despite being cold. Itachi shrugged his jacket off and draped it over the blonds shoulders. Naruto blinked up at the taller man. “Why did you do that?” “I can’t have my assistant getting sick now can I?” Itachi purred. “I guess not, but what about you?” Naruto asked with concerned. “The limo will be here soon and I actually enjoy the cold, so it’s not a bother.” Itachi answered smoothly, his face unreadable. Naruto smiled gratefully. “Well as long you’re sure that you’re okay, then thankful. I wasn’t planning on being out this late.” “Kisame has a weird way of getting under other people’s skins. But he means well, he was uncomfortable taking the ticket from you. He felt that it was your place to go and not his.” Itachi answered as the cars passed them by, headlights reflecting off the long black hair. “Yeah,” Naruto grumbled. “I hope I have an apartment left when I get back.” “Ah yes, it may not have been a good idea to leave those two alone. One is just as mischievous as the other.” Itachi chuckled. “And I’m holding you responsible since you introduced the two.” Naruto teased as he watched the lights play on the other mans hair. “I shall replace anything that has been broken.” Itachi answered somberly. “Then I hope they broke my couch,” Naruto teased as he grinned. The limo pulled up to the curb and Itachi opened the door and gestured for the blond to enter first. Naruto scooted over the far side of the car. The Uchiha entered gracefully and the blond wish that he could do that. He was never graceful in anything that he did. The ride was fairly to the apartment. It was comfortable while the blond watched the lights of the city pass by. He loved riding in the car around Christmas back when he was a kid. Kyuubi would take him out on the weekends to see the houses that actually decorated for the holiday. He had always squealed in delight. And then there was the park that set up special lights and you could drive through it. For extra money you could have a steaming cup of hot chocolate. A content smile crossed his face as he thought about those days. He thought that maybe him, Konohamaru and Kyuubi could go out. It sounded like a great plan to him. Naruto couldn’t wait to run it by his uncle. “What are you thinking about?” Itachi asked curiously, tilting his head to the side. “My uncle used to take me out to see Christmas lights when I was younger. We get to do that again,” he said the smile still on his face. “Ah, my family never did anything like that.” Itachi said as he studied the blonds face. “You’re more than welcome to join us. I really don’t mind and I’m sure Kyuubi wouldn’t either!” “I wouldn’t be imposing?” “Not at all!” Naruto exclaimed happily. The limo came to a stop and Naruto’s door was opened shortly after. As the blond stepped out he asked Itachi to come up with him. He didn’t want to deal with Kisame alone. They made their way up to the apartment, Naruto really didn’t think that he would have Itachi over to his apartment. It was something that he thought would never happen. He only hoped that his place wasn’t trashed. He would definitely start taking things away from Konohamaru. Naruto didn’t even bother to knock on the door, he put the key in and unlocked it. He quietly opened it and peered into the apartment first, making sure that everything was suitable for Itachi to enter. He raised an eyebrow when he noticed that it was still in tact. He quickly widened the door and let Itachi slip through as well. The blond could make out Kisame’s form on the couch, but Konohamaru was no where to be seen. He hoped that his godson was in bed where he was supposed to be. The Italian rose from the couch and smiled when he turned around, greeting the two men with a smile. “Everything went well! I didn’t have a problem with him,” Kisame said as Naruto handed Itachi’s jacket back to him. “That’s good, thank you for taking care of him.” Naruto replied as he smiled in gratitude. “It was no problem. If you don’t mind, I’d like to visit him again when I’m in town.” “Yeah that’s fine,” Naruto replied as he yawned. He didn’t realize that his day had taken that much out of him. “I think it’s time we take our leave Kisame.” “Yeah, the kid looks pooped. You working him too hard?” “No.” Naruto missed the whole exchange as he took his shoes off and leaned back against his kitchen counter, his eyelids drooping. The only thing on his mind right now was sleep. He had to be up for work early tomorrow and then he had a night planned out with his friends. They were celebrating Kiba and Sasuke’s engagement tomorrow. So with those thoughts, he fell asleep standing up.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
