Chapter 12
Hits
It was late. Past the time that most decent people went to sleep, but the main street of the inner city was still wide awake.
Three young men leaned against the locked door of the closed law office, passing a paper bag back and forth, taking long swigs from the hidden bottle. They lit up something, that from a distance could have been mistaken for a cigarette, and began to greedily share it as well.
Nearby, a set of love birds stumbled out of the flashy metal doors of the neon night club. They went around the corner shoving their tongues down each others throats, before sliding their hands under clothing, only pausing to give the girl a moment to empty the contents her stomach on the side of a brick wall, then continued on with their disgusting behavior.
Cars came at a constant slow stream, most with music blaring with teenagers shouting profanities from the back seats. These cars grouped together, stopping and blocking half the road, as kids piled out. They greeted each other, then began to show off improvements to their rides, and the neat tricks they could do with hydraulics.
Then there were the quite cars. The ones that were trying so hard not to be noticed that they stood out on the loud street. None of the teens paid any attention to the cars that snuck past them with the windows rolled up and the lights off. There was only one reason they had to be on the street late at night, and that was to score. Whether it be drugs or whores, men and occasionally a woman, would drive down to a street corner to find what they needed.
Bankotsu sat, staying low to metal grate bottom of the third floor fire escape of a run down apartment complex just off the main street. He waited patiently and re-checked his rifle. Aiming it to the empty spot just behind the dumpster a little further past him, deeper into the alley, then refocused his gaze back to group of girls on the corner.
They were far enough away that he couldn’t make out faces, just blurs of different colored clothes. They kinda reminded Bankotsu of peacocks, putting on a bright show to attract a mate.
One another the women came and left, being dropped off and pick up by various cars, then returned to their post, waiting by the stop sign on the corner.
He squinted, trying to get a good look as a white truck pulled up and the passenger door opened. A purple color blur got out then move back into the flock of other hookers. That’s her.
He watched with great interest, hoping Sesshomaru had noticed the girl too. They missed her last time and the truck up picking her up before they could. He was getting tired sitting up here all night and just wanted to get this over with.
He sighed in relief when he watched his Mercedes pull up to the corner. The girls flocked to the expensive car, hoping for a good pay off. A moment later the door opened and the girl dressed in purple climbed in.
The car turned to the right slowly making it’s way to the end of the alley. As it past Bankotsu, he re-adjusted himself, ready to make the shot.
Taisho had instructed them to send a message to a gang here in the ghetto. One that had decided it wasn’t going to follow the rules anymore and was behind in it’s taxes. But as generous as the Yakuza was, Taisho decided to give the gang a warning before that got serous. ‘Kill one of their prostitutes.’
So after carefully watching the girls, Sesshomaru picked out one. All the girls on the corner were from the Bakuto gang, and any one would do but he had insisted that this girl should be the target. It didn’t really matter to Bankotsu, so he just went along with it for arguments sake.
So they spilt up, Sesshomaru taking the roll of acquiring the target, while Bankotsu waited to make the shot. Of course they didn’t really need to go through so much effort to kill a hooker, but he really did need to work on his sniper shots, and this seemed like a great opportunity. If for any reason he’d miss, then Sesshomaru could finish the job.
The car stopped just in front of the dumpster, not too far past him. Bankotsu lowered his head and followed the figures through the sight glass.
They got out of the car, and the girl dressed in a tight black mini shirt and a dark purple furry coat, ran to the side of the tall white haired man in a suit. She pulled at his arm, leading to behind the dumpster. She hiked up her skirt, and leaned over placing both hands against the brick wall of the neighboring building, readying herself to be taken from behind.
Sesshomaru stepped in close to the girl, who looked like quite the talkative one, turning back every second to say something. She was to far away to hear what she was saying, but it was making it hard to aim with all the wiggling.
Sesshomaru must’ve guess this because he leaned in close to her ear whispered something, then slowly he pressed the back of her head until her forehead was touching the wall. She stayed quiet after that, only wiggling her hips in anticipation of what was to come.
Sesshomaru ran his hand from the back of her head and down her spine, before he took several silent steps backwards.
Showtime. This was a perfect opening. Bankotsu aimed carefully for the center of the back of her head, and squeezed the trigger.
The sound the bullet made as it escaped the chamber was hardly audible. Bankotsu smiled gleefully as it whizzed through the air and struck true, embedded itself right in the girl’s head.
Blood and little fleshy chunks splattered on the bricks in front of her, the color merging well together. She instantly went limp doing a face plant against the wall and dragged her cheeks down it as she slide to the ground, leaving a trail of pieces of skin and blood. She laid in a awkward position, face against the bricks, eyes wide open.
Sesshomaru bent down over the girl and tugged her skirt down.
How gentleman like of him, not wanting the girl to be flashing whoever found her. Bankotsu snickered, gathered his belongings and started gracefully climbing down the small stairs.
Sesshomaru hopped in the car and met up with him at the bottom of the fire escape. They changed seats, and pulled out of the alley, leaving the young woman’s body abandoned.
*******************
They rode in silence until crossing the road that marked the end of the Bakuto’s territory. No one followed them, but that wasn’t really a surprise. They most likely hadn’t even found the girl yet.
“So, I guess the next stop is a cop.” Bankotsu pulled a piece of paper from in inner jacket pocket and past it to Sesshomaru. He opened it and quietly read the description and location of the next target, along with other tidbits of information someone thought might be helpful.
“It’s one of those FBI agents. Light talked your father out of going straight for the head guy. I’m not sure exactly what he said, but they decided to go for the lackeys first. Fucking waste of time. We should just knock of the Ryuuzaki guy and be done with it.” Bankotsu shrugged and shook his head.
“It is not our place to decide the target. We just take them out.” Sesshomaru’s voice was unwavering as he finished the note, then placed it into his own pocket.
Jin. This was the man that the council decided was the next target. According to the info, Jin was a long standing member of the team currently investigating the dead police, and once worked closely with Light.
It was a token of good faith from Light that he provided the info needed to dispose of a formal comrade, but Sesshomaru couldn’t help be leery. First there was the very good possibility that this might be a set up, and then the fact he persuaded Taisho not to put the hit out on the agent in charge, Ryuuzaki. Was he trying to protect the other man? Regardless, orders were orders, and he would follow them as long as they came from his father. Sesshomaru didn’t have much respect in the rest of the family or council members, and normally refused any job they asked of him.
There was only one thing that he refused of his father. Taisho had spent much time into priming Sesshomaru to one day take over as head of the household, and he probably would one day. But for now he had no interest what so ever in taking a seat on the council. Sitting around in a stuffy room arguing with a bunch of pompous asses was not his idea of a dream job. For now he just enjoyed controlling his world with a gun.
They drove deeper into upper class business district of Hollywood, following the directions to the hotel. On the way, Bankotsu filled him in on all of the instructions he had been given.
“Of course we are to make this as quiet as possible, and not to draw attention to ourselves. And because we are so close to home, they don’t want us being seen at all. And now for the tricky part. We can’t use our guns. Guess all the other deaths were done with the same gun, and it might add suspicion of there being more then one guy killing off cops, or something like that. All I know is that part is bullshit. No guns. What are we suppose to do, whack him in the head really hard? Well, I guess I could do that…” Bankotsu trailed off, musing to himself on all the ways he could kill this man, with a strange pleasant smile on his face.
“You can’t always rely on a gun. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. Now stop complaining about it, you’re giving me a headache.” Sesshomaru ran fingers through his bangs, lightly massaging his forehead. For some reason, his partner-in-training was bothering him more then normal. He just wanted to retire to his house for the rest of the night. It would be for the best if he handled the next job himself. The faster it was done, the faster he could get home.
The car pulled up across the street of the Hotel Six that Jin was reportedly staying at. By far it’s not the nicest hotel in the area. It was a single level hotel in the shape of a backwards L. The office was closest to the street while rooms with parking wrapped around both sides of the building.
Now, which room was he staying in? There was no room number on the directions they had received, but there was a description of a car, a black Crown Vic. It didn’t take long to find the car parked on the back side of the building, farthest from the street, and not much longer to locate the room the owner was staying in.
They inspected the surrounding from their car, looking for cameras, neighbors, and security guards. Anything that might need to be taken into consideration before making a plan.
No video cameras, no guards, and only two people asleep in the room to the right. There didn’t seem to be much of a challenge here.
They backed their car into an empty spot a few doors down and went over the plan, taking extra precautions considering this was Light’s idea.
“In case this turns out to be a set up, I do not wish to run head first into the room. You will knock on the door and get his attention. If it stays shut, then we can assume they want us to enter and leave ourselves open for an ambush. In this case we will simply leave and observe from a distance. If he opens it, then we can assume he is unaware of our arrival or intent. In this case, you distract him and I will handle things from there.” Sesshomaru checked his Glock and placed it back in the holder at his side. Even though he was not to use it, he wanted it ready, just in case.
“What? All I get to do is knock on a door? That sucks.” Bankotsu curled his upper lip in a disapproving manner at the idea.
“That, and keep prying eyes away. I have more experience at this and I have a feeling that he would not be a good person to practice on.”
“Fine,” he huffed. At least he could pick his battles, this would have been one he wasn’t going to win.
The two silently left the car and crept to the door. Sesshomaru pressed his back flat against the wall on side the door opened away from, and Bankotsu posed to knock, waiting for a sign.
Sesshomaru nodded and Bankotsu knocked. Quietly at first, then again a little harder. No answer. Next he gave the door a good thumping, and they were rewarded with a groggy sounding voice cussing from inside the room.
“Hold on…” The voice was muffled, but defiantly there, and they waited patiently until the door opened. A dark haired man with a thin pair of glasses came into view.
“What?” The voice was short and a bit pissed off.
Sesshomaru stayed perfectly still and Bankotsu, face to face with the man, began to sheepishly rub the back of his neck.
“Hey man. Sorry waking you up so damn late, but is that your car?” He pointed his thumb over his shoulder, motioning towards the black car behind them.
“Yeah…” The man said wearily, but never took his eyes off the intruder on his door step.
“Well, I hate to tell you this, but I just clipped the back end with my car.” And he pointed towards the Mercedes park a couple spots down, in the opposite direction of Sesshomaru.
“Fuck man. Really? Damn, give me a sec. Lemme grab some shoes.” He slammed the door shut and clicked the lock into place.
Sesshomaru nodded his head to one side, silently telling his partner to move. Bankotsu instantly obliged and stepped to the side. Sesshomaru took the place in front of the door. He placed his hand over the door knob, but didn’t attempt to turn it, waiting for just the right moment.
A minute later foot steps approached the door and the metallic sound of the lock tumblers filled the air. As soon as the clicking stopped and Sesshomaru was sure the lock was undone, he latched onto the handle, turned it quickly, then slammed the door with such force it knocked back the man on the other side.
Sesshomaru quickly slid into the room and charged towards the target. Jin stumbled backwards, grabbing at the bloody mess that was his nose with one hand, and reaching for his pistol in his shoulder holster with the other.
He never got off a shot. Within seconds Sesshomaru darted around the room, easily avoiding the aim of the injury agent. The assassin slipped in behind the agent, wrapping his skillful hands around the agent’s head, and twisted.
It was over in a instant. The sound of bones cracking, breaking apart, echoed in the cheap hotel room, as the cop’s head twisted in an unnatural position. The body turned to dead weight, falling limplessly into a pile at the Yakuza member’s feet.
Sesshomaru glanced around, now being the first time to check for any other people in the room, and relaxed slightly when finding he was alone. That is aside from Bankotsu, who was now staring at his boss with wide eyes of amazement.
“Dude…” Sesshomaru quirked an eyebrow. He couldn’t ever remember his underling referring to him in such a casual manner.
“That, was, AWSOME!” Bankotsu ran to his partners side and placed a heavy hand on the assassin’s shoulder. “That took like ten seconds. I barely had time to shut the door. Crazy. Where in the hell did you learn to move like that? And more important, when are you going to teach me?” The younger man began to ramble a bit, bring back the other’s headache.
“Let’s go.” Sesshomaru simply stepped forward, out of Bankotsu’s reach and headed to the car.
“Hey, wait for me.” The trainee ran after his partner, taking a second to wipe down the door knob with the alcohol pads from his pocket, removing all finger prints, then shut the door quietly.
The poor housekeeper was going to be in for a nasty surprise in the morning.
******************
Hinata cursed at her trunk and at the steam rising from it’s hood.
The damn thing broke down when she used her free time to go grocery shopping. She had left the house at about 8pm and was heading home about an hour later when the piece of crap started sputtering and losing all of it’s ‘oomph,’ barely moving even when she floored it.
She pulled into a gas station and tried to figure out the problem, but aside from added water, she didn’t know what to do. After taking up the offer from a couple of nice Latino men to look at the engine, who also couldn’t fix it, she decided to call Light for help.
She really, really, didn’t want to go that route, and avoided making the call until 11pm. She wasn’t suppose to leave the house after dark, and she was gonna be in trouble. All of her newly found disobedience she blamed purely on Gaara. There was something about being near him that remindered her of the good old days, and made her feel and act like a teenager again.
Light was definitely less then pleased when she called his cell. He scolded her, then said there was no way he could possible come get her. He was stuck on an assignment and wouldn’t be leaving where he was until tomorrow night at the earliest. “You made your bed, now sleep in it. Walk.” Then he hung up on her.
She stood in the phone booth, shaking, trying to figure out how to get home. She had used all the money Light left to buy food and didn’t have any left for a cab. So she did the only thing she could think of, aside of hitch hiking with a complete stranger that would probably want some kind of a ‘payment.’ She found a couple empty bottles, filled them with water to refill the radiator, and jumped in the truck, praying she could limp the stupid thing home.
She didn’t make it far. At first the truck did alright, going about fifteen miles per hour, but once she reached the inclined road of The Canyon, the truck stalled to a crawl, barely inching up the road. She spent hours forcing it to go as far as it could before the truck hissed angrily and blew a large amount of puffy white steam into the air. It was going no further.
She still wasn’t anywhere near home. It would take another hour or two by foot to get here.
“This sucks!” She scream out to no one is particular. She grabbed her keys, forcefully shoving them into her pocket, slammed the door shut and stormed off. This was going to be a long night.
****************************
Sesshomaru had been very pleased when they finally returned to the Rogue Room and he could retrieve his bike. He wasted no time jumping on, and taking off for home, not even bother to stop in and say hello to Sai. Bankotsu hadn’t stopped talking about the events of the night, and he was sick of hearing it.
Relief washed over him when he turned by the road leading up the canyon. He was almost home, and would be in bed soon.
He follow the road carefully, and tried not to lose himself in thought. Riding a bike took a lot more attention then driving a car, and he had enough set backs this month. The last thing he need was to crash while daydreaming.
He barely enter The Canyon when he spotted a truck on the side on the rode. After his experience earlier this month, he had decided to handle strange vehicles with much caution, and slowly approached it.
It wasn’t long before he realized he knew the blue Toyota, then began looking around for the dark haired driver. His brows dipped in an expression one might call worry when he didn’t see the young girl anywhere. Maybe the teens that came after him had come back for their only witness, considering she had pulled up in the middle of their fight.
He pull up beside on the driver’s side, placed bother feet on the ground and held his bike upright. Pulling off his helmet he took a closer look, searching for any signs of a struggle, and was almost relieved when he saw the steam still trickling from under the hood. She must have broke down. That was better then a kidnapping or murder.
Not that he really cared what happened to the girl in the long run, but he didn’t like feeling indebted to someone. And the girl had helped him, even though she was scared stiff and against her better judgment. Maybe he would get lucky and find her walking on the road. Then he would give her a ride and they could be even.
Judging by the slight gurgling noises the truck made, it must have broke down less than half an hour ago. Any time before that and the steam would have stopped by now. And this rode was pretty quite at two in the morning, so the chances of her getting picked up by someone else were slim. She was probably walking.
He hung the helmet off of the handle bars and continued on slowly, wanting the best view to search for the innocent girl.
He probably would have missed her if the moon light didn’t reflect so nicely off her raven hair. She was crouched, back facing the road. Her face between her knees, looking quite sad. He stopped his bike, put the kick stand down, and got off.
Hinata didn’t flinch, even we he stood right behind her, staring at the back of her. This was the second time tonight he stared at the back of a woman’s head, and he tried to push the image of the dead hooker out of his mind.
“Hinata.” Hearing her own name obviously started the girl because she spun around so fast and fell back, then stared at him with a frighten mouse expression he remember from their first encounter.
Her eyes sparked with recognization and she looked happy to see him if only for a moment before a sad, sullen look took hold, matching the tear still wet on her cheeks.
“Sesshomaru…” she said quietly, mumbling to herself.
“Sorry to disappoint.” He stared at her, not sure if he should let her be.
“No, it’s just… you see… sorry, I am not much for company right now. I think I broke my ankle. I slipped on a rock.” She had a one shoe off and had her hand tightly wrapped around her ankle.
He bent down and she moved her hands away. He took her heel in the palm of one hand and gingerly forced the foot the rotate with the other. She winced in pain, but handled it well over all. No more tears even when he put pressure on the swollen sides of her ankle. Strange. Whatever she was crying about earlier was most likely not a physical pain.
“It’s not broke, just a mild sprang. It should be fine in a couple of days.” He gently placed her foot back to the ground and reached for his phone.
“I need a tow truck,” he spoke into the phone, turning and walking toward his bike, giving directions to the operator on the other end. Hinata wiped away the last of her tears, and sniffled a bit, before calling off to him that she didn’t have money for a tow truck.
“It’s fine.” He said once he put the phone back in it’s pocket. “Come on. Let’s get you home.”
He held out a hand, and she took it. Supporting her, he led her to his bike. He climbed on, while still holding her soft hand, the gave her a little tug signaling her to climb on. After she was completely on and adjusted, he handed back his helmet, which she strapped on.
It had been a long time since he had a woman on the back of his bike. It felt good, having a smaller body hold onto his shoulders when the bike started moving. The faster he went, the tighter the girl grasped, until her arms were wrapped around his neck. He mused himself at the silly way the girl held on and lifted his elbows up. She took the hint and moved her hands from the awkward position of almost strangling him, to slipping them around his waist. As soon as she was situated and comfortable, Sesshomaru really took off, earning himself a tight squeeze as Hinata made a surprised ‘yelp’ from behind him.
The ride didn’t last nearly long enough and before long they were pulling into her driveway.
As soon as they stopped, she quickly pulled her arms away and a chill ran over the abandon spot on his abs.
“Thank you for the ride, and for the tow truck. I’m sure I can manage from here.” She slide off the bike and stumbled towards the door.
He thought for a second that he should just leave, even though the girl still looked like she needed help. After all they were even now, right? A ride for a ride. Except the fact she showed up in the middle of the night to check on him. Damn. He could level that out quickly, all he had to do was help her to bed, and make sure she was comfortable. Then he wouldn’t feel like he owed her anything. Okay, that should only take a couple of minutes.
