every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now
I’ve been raising up my hands
drive another nail in
just what GOD needs one more victim
every day I crucify myself
nothing I do is good enough for you
and my HEART is sick of being in chains
you’re just an empty cage kid if you kill the bird
please be save me I CRY

Chapter XII There Is No Life Without Wrath
Tsunade looked out over Konoha, slumped in her chair and feeling worn. As much as she tried to deceive herself and others about her true age, she was beginning to lose the battle. She sipped some sake and let her head fall against the backrest. She was doing everything in her power to keep Konoha safe from any enemies and yet, now there was a chance that shinobi from her own village had changed sides. It was a constant struggle for power and a few years ago, Konohagakure had rightfully been the most powerful of all Hidden Villages.
But things had changed. Pledging allegiance to one’s village was no longer the most important principle in a shinobi’s life. Now it was striving towards one’s own goals first. It was a battle any Hidden Village would lose because no matter the outcome, they would lose shinobi. If they were brought back alive, they would be tried and could never be trusted again. They could be killed. Or they could forever escape their village’s grasp. Frustrated, she threw her empty cup across the room and closed her eyes as she heard it break. She was desperately wishing that the ANBU she had sent out to investigate the matter would come up with a satisfying answer but she highly doubted it. Too many signs were pointing the other way if you looked closely.
“Hokage-sama, Team 11 is here for a briefing,” Shizune said as she walked in. Tsunade was glad she never mentioned the broken cup.
“Let them in.”
[-]
“Get the leader of ANBU Core in here,” Tsunade screamed. She had to suppress the urge to just keep on screaming, obscenities, insults, anything to get rid of this sinking feeling of rage and disappointment. Two of the brightest scions of Konohagakure had defected. Why was it always the most intelligent, the most talented? Was living in peace in their village even too stifling, unbearable? Why did they always have that urge for more? The door to her office creaked open and she whirled around, just in time to see a man in the standard ANBU Core-uniform enter, although the red ribbon tied around his upper arm indicated his status as leader.
“Ever since becoming Hokage, I’ve accepted that ANBU Core was a separate league and that I would only be informed of the necessary. But then why didn’t I hear anything sooner about Hyūga Neji and Uchiha Itachi defecting? They were on one of your missions which makes it really hard to believe that you didn’t know about this sooner than I. Tell me, when were you planning on telling me? You’re really pushing it with how much lenience I am willing to give you and the rest of your little group.” Due to the mask, she couldn’t see any of his facial expressions but her anger was no longer her greatest concern as his body-language spoke volumes; the falter in his step, the way he dropped his head. “You didn’t know yet.” The realization was confirmed with a nod from the man in front of her.
“It was quite unusual for them to take so long for a mission but since… I didn’t know, I should have but I didn’t.” The tone of his voice was a painful indicator of how he blamed himself for this entire situation, how he himself felt he should have known sooner.
“No, no one is to blame for this except those two. It was their decision to defect so I shouldn’t be blaming anyone else for this mess. But why did they do this? Why together? I knew the Hyūga wasn’t too keen on his wedding but with his curse-seal…” Tsunade let her head fall in her lifted hands and groaned. She didn’t even want to imagine how she was going to have to tell their families and the uproar it would cause in the village. Two prodigies of the most noble clans had turned their back on Konoha. This was going to be worse than with Orochimaru’s defection.
“Do I have to assemble a team to go after them?” Ryū had apparently recovered from his shock at hearing that two of his most talented subordinates had defected and his voice now held a neutral tone, as was usual for him. But Tsunade guessed that he hadn’t fully regained his normal attitude, that this was just a front to hide any personal weaknesses. Even in such circumstances, he never forgot what it meant to be a good shinobi.
“We’ll have to inform their families first,” she sighed.
“And the Bingo Book?” There was no doubt about it. Uchiha Itachi and Hyūga Neji knew many secrets of Konohagakure and already had the potential to be classified as S-Class missing-nin. But something about adding them to that wretched book so early after hearing about their defection seemed utterly wrong. Perhaps her rational side was clouded over by her subjective judgement but she couldn’t for the life of her imagine them leaving Konoha with any malicious intent. Especially the Hyūga. He had proven his loyalty time and time again. He must have detested the idea of getting married, otherwise he would never have done something idiotic as defecting with that curse-seal ingrained on his forehead. But where was Uchiha Itachi’s involvement in all this? She would be lying if she said that looking him in the eye didn’t slightly unsettle her. A bitter laugh escaped her. They had created the ultimate shinobi and apparently had lost any control over him.
“We’ll wait until after the retrieval-mission. Could you have someone send for Uchiha Fugaku and Hyūga Hiashi?” Ryū nodded and swiftly left the room. She heard the door closing and screamed, trying to get all her frustration and helplessness and anger out. How could they do this to their village!? Shizune approached her and she lifted a hand, silently telling to leave her alone for a few minutes. They would be harshly needed as Uchiha Fugaku and Hyūga Hiashi stood in front of her.
“Hokage-sama, you requested our presence,” Fugaku said. He lifted an eyebrow as Hyūga Hiashi walked in and greeted their leader. Tsunade motioned for them to sit down in front of her desk and they did so, the frown on their face conveying their confusion. Tsunade’s facial expression didn’t soothe them either.
“I’m sure you noticed your son’s and nephew’s long absence,” Tsunade started. She was stalling, she knew it but what she needed to say would infuriate the two men in front of her. Though not easily frightened, she knew their reactions would be grave. Perhaps she was really getting too old for this…
Fugaku spoke up, eager to know what was going on. “Did something happen to them?”
“After an investigation, we’ve discovered they have defected from Konoha.” Both clan heads knew she had no reason to lie, far from it even.
Fugaku tried to slow down his breathing, taking in gulps of air through his nose, his hands clenched around the armrests of his seat. Hiashi was in no better of a state. Had they cared any less about carefully shielding their emotions, Tsunade suspected they would have been screaming at her already.
“How did you discover that?”
“They were supposed to meet a contact but never showed up.” The ones who had executed the investigation had carefully looked for any signs that perhaps they had been ambushed or killed even, but had found nothing, not a single trace of chakra-signatures or any proof of them. That only left defection. Perhaps it was even worse than them being killed. Both for Konoha and their families.
“You can’t just assume they defected. You and I know just as well all the things that go wrong on a mission. In stead of accusing my nephew that he defected you should be out there looking for him.” Hiashi’s voice was icily cold and barely a tone above a whisper.
“If they had been kidnapped, we would have gotten a note for ransom. It’s well known how valuable they were to Konoha. If killed, we would have found a body or at least the remains. The investigation took almost two weeks, to make sure no one would jump to conclusions. But they left for their mission almost a month ago. I’m sorry, Uchiha-san, Hyūga-san.”
Both men knew they were cornered and despite their massive influence in Konoha, they wouldn’t be able to prevent themselves from accepting that they had lost their most talented family-member. Fugaku stormed up from his chair, finally surrendering to his emotions. “Why would Itachi do a stupid thing like that!?” It was as if his mind unconsciously blocked all the memories from the many confrontations between himself and his eldest son, in which the latter had plainly stated his discontent about his family and his village. “And what has your nephew to do with it, huh!?” He pointed an accusing finger towards Hiashi, who glared at him.
“Your son influenced Neji-kun, not the other way around.”
“Don’t you dare talk that way about my son!”
Hiashi jerked up from his seat and went to stand before Fugaku. “In case you’ve forgotten, your son has defected too. And he can’t be brought back by any curse-seal.”
Tsunade had had enough. This argument was rapidly escalating and would only be a waste of time for all the occupants in the room. Supporting herself on her arms, she took in a deep breath. “Uchiha-san, Hyūga-san, sit down!” Glad for the sudden silence, she rubbed her forehead softly, trying to prevent a headache from forming. “I think I shouldn’t be asking you the reason for their mutual defection. Do you have an idea who could know more?”
Hiashi fell back in his seat, looking painfully defeated before taking control of his emotions again. “Perhaps that boy Nara Shikamaru. He and Neji were friends.”
Tsunade nodded and walked to the door, instructing Kotetsu to get him. Closing the door behind her again, she walked back to her desk.
“You are going to try and bring them back, aren’t you?” Fugaku asked with urgency.
She nodded and turned to Hiashi. “I assume you want one of your clan in the team?” “I’ll send Hinata along.” Tsunade cringed slightly. Hinata had become an increasingly more confident over the years and her growth was impressive but a lot if it she owed to her cousin. It was doubtful she could actually activate the curse-seal on someone she considered so close to her. The day she took over the position as the Hyūga’s clan head, would mean good news for all of her relatives.
They all waited for the arrival of the Nara boy, the tension in the room getting thicker with each passing minute. Tsunade breathed a silent sigh of relief as she heard knocking on the door and opened the door herself, ushering Shikamaru inside.
“Sit down, Shikamaru-kun.” She sat down in her own chair, Shikamaru choosing to stay standing and leaning against a wall. “I’m afraid I have some bad news. Hyūga Neji and Uchiha Itachi have defected from Konoha.” Only for appearance’s sake did Shikamaru lift his eyebrows, feigning surprise. He had known from the moment Kotetsu went to retrieve him why the Hokage requested him to her office.
“We were hoping you know why they went together since you and Neji-kun were friends.”
Shikamaru shook his head slightly, already dreading what was to come since it could only be called troublesome. He hated troublesome things. But then again, Neji was and yet, he would always consider him a friend. Trying not to glare at the Hyūga and Uchiha – had they been less oppressive, Neji and Itachi wouldn’t have had to defect – he started to speak. “Neji and Itachi have been together for two years now.”
Both clan-heads were visibly lost for words before Neji’s uncle mentally pulled himself together. “What do you mean, together?” he spat out venomously.
“Exactly what I said. They’re a couple,” Shikamaru confirmed. Hiashi’s eyes widened. So Neji hadn’t been saying empty words when telling how he had sex with a man. With Uchiha Itachi. Fugaku was bristling in anger, not able to fathom the idea of his son turning his back on the for another boy. Shikamaru’s mouth tightened, knowing what would follow now that everyone was aware of the details. A team would be sent out to chase them down. He hoped Neji was absolutely certain of his decision because the following weeks would be defining for their relationship but most importantly, their lives. He felt a heavy gaze on him and turned to find Tsunade staring straight at him. Did she think he helped them in their defection? She vaguely smiled and he was rest assured.
Fugaku banged on the desk with his closed fists, demanding everyone’s attention. “How could you not have told anyone sooner!? We should have put a stop to this before it even began.”
“Because they cared for each other. They apparently defected, just to be together. Doesn’t that say enough?” Shikamaru’s cool voice was in stark contrast to Fugaku’s enraged tone. He decided he had said enough and stared out of the window. Fugaku was rendered silent at the sheer brutality and disrespect but then slumped his shoulders.
“Do what you want with Itachi. If this is his decision, I no longer want to have any affiliation.” He walked out of the room, leaving Tsunade to stare after him, shocked that he had disowned his son just now, and only because he was a homosexual.
“I’ll send Hinata for the details of the retrieval-mission. Hokage-sama,” Hiashi said calmly, his eyes though filled with anger as he bowed. The moment the door shut, Shikamaru turned to Tsunade.
“Don’t kill them. Please.” Tsunade sighed. Shikamaru had advised her many times before, despite his young age and she trusted his judgement. But now he was too involved. Neji had been one of his best friends after all.
“I’ll have to if they refuse to come back willingly. You know they could pose a threat to Konoha.”
Shikamaru leaned on her desk, willing her to look at him. “They could, of course. But not necessarily. Please reconsider it.” He bowed his head and left Tsunade alone with many doubts on how to proceed. But what could she do? They had defected. Become missing-nin.
Hiashi stared after Fugaku, seeing him stomping his way to his clan’s compound. He himself could no longer feel the barest hint of anger. Why should he? Neji was a fool to think he could just run away from him. This was why their clan used a curse-seal, and it would be a means to triumph and teach Neji a well-needed lesson once and for all.

Sasuke entered his house, sweat and dirt sticking to his skin after an hours-long sparring session with Naruto. He winced as he took off his sandals, his ribs protesting the move. Moving towards the kitchen, he found his mother leaning over the sink, her face shielded by her hair.
“Okaa-san, I’m home,” he greeted. She froze before rushing over and capturing him in a bone-crushing hug. It had been years since she had hugged him and he awkwardly patted her back.
“Did something happen?” He became alarmed as he heard his mother sobbing against his shoulder.
“Is Itachi okay?” Fear made his heart clench. The thought of Itachi being gone forever was almost unbearable. Someone stumbled through the door and he saw his father, grinning drunkenly.
“Did she tell you, huh? Did she tell you that your brother decided to leave us for good? And for a boy no less. The dirty faggot.” The last was muttered with a sneer on his lips. Sasuke froze. What did he mean? Did he mean that…
“Itachi defected, Sasuke. With Hyūga Neji. Nara Shikamaru told your father that they are already a couple for two years,” his mother whispered, loosening the embrace. Sasuke’s mouth fell open in shock, scrambled thoughts taking over and making it impossible to think clearly.
“No, he wouldn’t do that. That Nara is lying. That fucking Nara is lying!” His mother tried to grab his shoulder but he jerked her touch away. “Itachi wouldn’t leave us.” He fell down on his knees, tears slipping from his eyes. Mikoto sat down next to him, not reaching out to him but trying to catch his eyes. When Fugaku told her, she initially refused to believe it as well. Her son, who she had given life to and loved very much, had left. She couldn’t prevent thinking that it was their own fault.
“It is true, Sasuke. Try not to be mad at your brother. He only wanted to make a choice for himself for once.” Her youngest stared at her incredulously before briskly standing up and leaving the house.
Mikoto sagged down on the floor, covering her face with her hands as she cried in agony. Sasuke had always looked up to his older brother and she already the worst. This turn of events would likely make her lose her second son as well, if not physically, then emotionally.
“Stop crying for that disgusting cocksucker.” Fugaku’s reaction was perhaps even more disheartening. His own son, who had lived up to and exceeded all of his expectations was no longer considered his flesh and blood and merely for being a homosexual. A sudden bout of anger made her stand up and face her husband, her eyes gleaming, such a difference from their usual kind glance. “He’s your son.” Fugaku looked at her disbelievingly, not used to having his wife talk back to him.
“That faggot is not my son.”
“He’s your son. He’s your son. Your son!” Mikoto screamed. “He’s family…” She could no longer speak, her throat wrung shut from all the crying. Shaking her head, she shot a disappointed glance at her husband before retreating to their bedroom.
Everyone looked at him strangely as they passed him, noticing his aggressive pace and overall, frightening behaviour. Sasuke only gave them furious glares, not wanting to deal with anyone. Except one person. He needed to see him. He wanted to kill him. How could he not have told anyone about his brother and that whore of a Hyūga. Every time he had noticed something peculiar between them; seeing Neji in Itachi’s room, his being an ANBU Core, everyone had always said he was imagining things. He hadn’t been imagining things but this wasn’t how he wanted to prove he was right after all. This is something he could never have imagined, no matter how many other signs he would have detected.
He had lost his brother. And it was that Hyūga’s fault. Perhaps there was a sense of logic in Itachi’s apparent infatuation with Neji. No one could deny that his older brother had always been rather distant but looking at it from the opposite perspective, it could easily be seen as lonely. And lonely people crave for another person’s affection. His brother had been weak to be so easily persuaded but Sasuke couldn’t hold it against him. He never would and he knew that for certain, despite what the future might bring. His admiration for Itachi wasn’t idle. He deserved respect. Even if he was swayed by that little slut waving his ass in front of him and probably promising him the world to make him defect alongside him.
He jumped on top of a rooftop and activated his Sharingan, looking for a specific signature. Letting his eyes slowly gaze over Konoha, attentive since this was a mission, albeit with a personal motif behind it, he tightened his mouth as he found what he was looking for. At top speed, he ran over and barged into the Hyūga estate, stopping in front of the main house.
“Nara, get down here right now,” he shouted at the top of his lungs. He could already see some of the Hyūga-clan making his way towards him but ignored them, willing to fight for the time he needed to bring Shikamaru in front of him. Hinata appeared, her eyes red and swollen and tear marks across her cheeks and Shikamaru following right behind her, squeezing her shoulder as a form of silent support before walking over to Sasuke cautiously. “You bastard. You knew all along. Why didn’t you tell anyone, me?”
Shikamaru sighed, becoming thoroughly fed up with the many confrontations crammed into one day. He reminded himself of his last conversation with Neji and though it did nothing to make this any less troublesome, he at least knew why he was doing it. “It wasn’t anyone’s business. It was only by accident that I found out myself.” The answer stunned Sasuke since he had so easily assumed Shikamaru had played a large part in this whole ordeal. But his rage was far from over and he turned to Hinata, not caring about the already very emotional and heartbroken state she was in.
“Your slut of a cousin deceived my brother to defect! Is this the great power of the Hyūga-clan? Have its members use their bodies to get what they want!?” Hinata’s jaw started trembling and fresh tears spilled from her eyes at the harsh words about Neji and her family. Shaking her head, she tried to wring out words.
“N-Neji loves Itachi. H-he t-told me.”
Sasuke sneered. “Loves? That prick isn’t capable of loving anyone except himself.” Hinata hung her head in defeat, trying not to pay attention to what he said but the words felt like a stab in her heart. She would never forget when Neji confessed to being in a relationship with Sasuke’s brother and she hoped she knew him well enough to know that he would never have done it unless he spoke the absolute truth. Neji was many things but not a liar. He had always spoken the truth, regardless to whom and how painful an effect it might have caused.
Shikamaru stepped in and wrapped an arm around Hinata. “Back off, Sasuke. Your brother and Neji defected and no matter how many people you insult, it won’t miraculously bring them back.” He guided Hinata back to her room, sending a final look at Sasuke. Sasuke’s reaction was exactly as he had expected it. Utterly disappointing and short-sighted.

Naruto looked around him and then turned back to his steaming bowl of ramen. The news that had spread around Konoha like a wildfire had already caused such an uproar, no one quite ready to believe what their ears had picked up. For the first time in his life, he didn’t vigorously attack his food, the clenching of his stomach too painful to eat at all. For the others at the table, it was quite similar. Sakura had her arm wrapped around Lee, who was crying loudly at the loss of his team-mate and Tenten, just staring straight-ahead, not picking up on anything. Chōji and Ino were lethargically picking at their food, worried about their own team-mate who had become too much involved and was currently being questioned. A lot of the Konoha Twelve – or should they already call themselves the Konoha Eleven now? - were missing; Shino and Kiba were with Hinata, trying to console her and the fact that she would be forced to chase down and bring back her own cousin, and Sasuke… He had made it very clear that he didn’t want to see anyone right now.
It was just so hard to fathom that two of Konoha’s brightest and most talented shinobi had defected and all out of love. But Neji and Itachi together? No matter how hard Naruto tried to get his head around it, he simply could not imagine it; either of them acknowledging the abstract notion of love, pursuing a relationship and even leaving Konoha to maintain their relationship.
“Lee, did you ever notice anything about Neji?” Sakura asked.
He shook his head wildly, always one for theatrical gestures. “The last two years he had always been so youthful but he never mentioned his love for Uchiha Itachi.” Naruto caught Sakura’s urgent gaze but he ignored it and stood up.
“This is all my fault. If I had tried harder to free him, he wouldn’t have defected.” Tenten slowly turned towards him, sadness obvious in her lax posture and wide eyes.
“He still would have been forced to marry.”
Naruto slammed his fists on the table, rattling the cups. “There would have been other possibilities. He wouldn’t have had to go this far!”
“You’re not mad that they defected?” Ino asked softly.
“Of course I am. But Neji… He’s a good guy.”
Sakura sighed. “Naruto, even if Neji hadn’t had the curse-seal, they still would have forced him into a marriage and he probably would still have defected. No matter how you look at it, no clan is going to applaud marrying two men.” The words hit Naruto deep because he knew they were completely true. So then, the only way to look at their defection was that they had done it out of selfishness. But what was more important? Your most precious person or your village?
[-]
Shikamaru was perched on top of an old look-out tower, his eyes narrowly fixated on the small team of people rapidly moving away from Konoha. Amongst them were Hinata and Kakashi and his nin-dogs. Tsunade hadn’t wasted any time although not under pressure of the Hyūga- and Uchiha-clan. Hyūga Hiashi’s reaction only confirmed the abuse he had put his nephew through for many years. Now all Shikamaru could hope was that the pursuit-team would fail in their task since having Itachi and Neji back in Konoha would mean dragging them into a new hell, worse than the one they escaped a month ago.
He sighed deeply and lit a cigarette. Soon, the news about their defection would spread to the other Countries and inevitably, Temari would find out as well, if she hadn’t already. It would be days before she was banging down his door, claiming that she was in Konoha for official business to hide her concern about him having lost his best friend. He would have to decide on whether or not to be completely honest with her. Would it be a good idea to put himself on the line by admitting that he had known about Itachi and Neji’s plans? Temari wouldn’t ever betray him but the values of a shinobi were high on her list of principles. He loved her but the last thing he wanted was an endless lecture about what he should have done. Indeed, what he had done, or rather not done, could be seen as treason against his village.
But he couldn’t for the life of him regret it; keeping their relationship silent, letting them sleep in his apartment occasionally, advising them on their defection. Nothing of that he regretted and it was merely because he knew Neji, he knew some of the hardships life had put him through and if Itachi was the one that made him happy, then it wasn’t any of his business to take that away from him. Even if their decision had made this an incredibly troublesome day for him. Neji always had that tendency to be troublesome. He turned his head as he heard someone approaching, the person not bothering to hide their presence.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” Naruto said as he plopped down next to him.
“You and the rest of the village,” Shikamaru muttered. His eyes searched for Hinata and her team-mates but they had already disappeared out of sight.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Shikamaru groaned, not wanting to explain himself yet again. “Because it wasn’t anyone’s business. And if others had known, it would have meant the end of their relationship.”
Naruto cringed at his harsh tone. “But then they wouldn’t have defected if they were no longer together.”
“They made each other happy. Would you want to be responsible for causing someone to lose their most precious person? It is more selfish to want to keep them here than them having defected.”
Naruto frowned at hearing Shikamaru indirectly state that the people one loved were more important than one’s loyalty to their village. “Neji was one of your best friend. Aren’t you mad?”
Shikamaru chuckled sneeringly. “What do you want to hear from me, Naruto? I am not the person who is going to soothe your conscience because you feel guilty about not being able to help Neji with his curse-seal.” He rose up as he said it and waved his hand slightly in greeting, just wanting to go home and crawl into bed.
“What about Sasuke and Hinata and their families!?” Naruto yelled after him. “Neji and Itachi-san hurt them so much!”
Shikamaru spun around and walked up to Naruto until their faces were centimetres apart. “A lot went on in those families that few people know about and it isn’t pretty, Naruto. It really isn’t.”
“What then!? What was going on? You’re the only one that knows anything so why won’t you say something?” Naruto nearly begged. He was desperate to figure out what was lying underneath Itachi and Neji’s decision to defect. He placed a hand on Shikamaru’s shoulder but it was quickly jerked away.
“Not now, Naruto.” Shikamaru’s voice sounded defeated as he was torn between saying something or nothing at all. But he couldn’t decide that now, not when his own mind had trouble finding clarity.
“Will you tell me someday?” Shikamaru smirked at Naruto’s sudden insight into his psyche. Normally he was far too dense and simply kept on going, not because he didn’t care about others but because he just didn’t pick up on those telltale signs that betrayed a person’s true state of mind.
“I don’t know. G’night, Naruto.” He walked away, eager for the blissful state of sleep in which his mind would take a small break. Now wasn’t the time to think too deeply about certain things.

Shikamaru angrily clenched his fist and stomped it into the wall, the wood breaking under the harsh contact. “How could they do that!? How the fuck could they do that!?”
Everyone stared at him, at his unusually emotional reaction but then again, his best friend had betrayed him in the worst way possible by joining the organization that had killed his beloved sensei.

DayDreamer: The end is only seven chapters away from now. Itachi is a very interesting character to work with since Masashi Kishimoto has the peculiar tendency to make secondary characters rather one-sided. Yet no one is purely good or evil. Thank you for the review!
