Chapter Eleven
The cool night air was restless, preventing Gaara from sleeping. He knew that many of his shinobi would be able to feel it, but he didn’t know if they were being kept from slumber as well. His siblings had no problems, each worn out from chasing after the six year old child that appeared to have energy that knew no bounds.
A chill went down the red head’s spine, recalling the child’s “escape” out into the market. He had gotten her away from any and all possible threats, but not before hearing the retired shinobi utter two words he hated most. Demon child.
Mahina had heard those words and instead of crying or asking him about it, she just smiled happily as they went back to the house. When Kankuro and Temari both heard about it, they were furious. Looking completely confused, Mahina had tilted her head slightly before asking why they were mad. “I get called a demon child all the time when I don’t have anybody with me.” Mahina said looking as if it were a form of endearment. “I think it’s cause they think that Daddy’s a demon.”
When they asked if she knew why, Mahina had simply shook her head, answering that she had no idea. That hateful name, as far as she was concerned, was just a form of endearment.
Teal eyes flickered when he heard a noise behind him, the redhead glancing over his shoulder. Rubbing one eye and holding on to the familiar orange jacket, Mahina stood silently. “What’s wrong?” Gaara questioned as he turned to look at her.
“I pottied my bed.”
He could hear the embarrassment in her voice and see the shame in her eyes. His first instinct was to ask the little girl what she wanted him to do about it, but he bit the comment back. The child was clearly stressed, despite being so obviously happy. He remembered hearing about how children expressed stress differently, but bed wetting was one of the ways stress affected children.
Sighing softly, the redhead nodded before leading the little girl back inside. He grabbed some fresh sheets from the linen closet before going into the little girl’s room. “I’m sorry, Gaara. When I have bad dreams, I don’t wake up. Daddy says it’s cause I don’t know when I’m having a bad dream anymore.” Mahina said, tears gathering in her eyes. “I’m really sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Gaara said as he tossed the soiled sheets and blanket onto the floor. There was no way the little girl was going to sleep on this bed tonight. Just putting new sheets on would be a waste of time. “How about you and I watch some television downstairs?”
Mahina nodded slightly, raising her arms slightly. Gaara smiled softly as he shook his head. “Wet jammies, remember?” Gaara questioned.
A sheepish grin spread across Mahina’s face as she ran to the dresser, digging out a change of clothes. Once she had changed her clothes, she wrapped her arms around Gaara’s waist. Chuckling softly to himself, Gaara picked the little girl up and carried her downstairs.
Once they had gotten settled and a show chosen, both drifted off into an easy sleep. One thing Gaara found himself hoping as he drifted off was that the little girl had no more nightmares. Getting peed on did not sound like fun.
The redhead woke up to the sound of snickering and a camera clicking. As he opened his eyes, he saw his siblings both fighting back laughter as Temari took pictures. “I’m assuming you couldn’t sleep and somebody thought you were Naruto.” Kankuro snickered.
Gaara looked down at the little girl, seeing her head nestled comfortably by his armpit. “I couldn’t sleep.” Gaara informed his siblings. “Mahina found me and informed me that she wet the bed so we decided to watch a show since she was upset. Temari, will you please stop taking pictures?!”
Temari laughed softly before answering, “Okay. It’s not every day that my baby brother, Kazekage of Suna, sleeps on the couch with a kid’s face in his armpit so it’s worthy of a few pictures.”
Gaara resisted the urge to stick his tongue out at his sister, choosing instead to frown. “Mahina, time to wake up.” Gaara said as he gently moved his arm a little.
Mahina moaned softly, her soft features crunching slightly as she began to wake up. “Wanna sleep.” Mahina murmured.
“Hey, you wanna help me make breakfast?” Temari questioned.
The little girl’s eyes shot open and before Gaara had a chance to brace himself, he found the little girl scrambling over him. A grunt of pain left his lips when the little girl’s foot located his groin as she darted off the couch and into the kitchen, shouting for Temari to hurry.
Temari and Kankuro hissed softly in sympathy, both resisting the urge to laugh. “Come on, Gaara,” Kankuro chuckled quietly. “We gotta get ready for another day of chasing the kid around.”
While he could agree with getting ready, he just wished he had known how careless of the male anatomy the little girl was capable of being. A feet and the male anatomy weren’t meant to mix and if the redhead had been tired before, he sure wasn’t now. “Temari,” Gaara groaned as the pain started to go away, “don’t you ever do that again.”
After two hours of hearing the little girl making noises as she explored and played by herself, Kankuro found himself getting anxious after half an hour of silence. He hadn’t heard the door open or close so she had to still be in the house.
A few minutes of searching led him to find the little girl in her bedroom, lying on her stomach as she put the pieces of paper and crayons that Temari had gotten her to use. “Hey, what’cha drawing?” Kankuro questioned.
“My dream.” Mahina answered simply. “Uncle Sai says that I should draw what I dream and that if I don’t remember, I should draw how I felt.”
“Ah, I see. Can I see them?”
Mahina didn’t look up or even leave her drawing as Kankuro came closer. “They’re not done.” Mahina said softly. “I wouldn’t have colored them cause Hiro said that those dreams aren’t for stupid-heads to see, but Daddy says I have to draw the dreams that make me potty the bed.”
“Hiro?”
“He’s the boy that lived in my head. He got mean so I made him go away until he’s nice again.”
“Why did he get mean?”
“He doesn’t like Daddy. Before I made him go away, he would say bad things about Daddy.”
“Like what?”
“Like Daddy isn’t really alive and that he has a monster in him that’s going to get out and kill everybody.” Mahina answered. “Then he said that I can make the monster be good and that making people hurt is good cause they deserve it. He said that my real mommy and daddy told him that before they died and that they died because of ninja from all over got really mad and killed them.”
“Oh, really?” Kankuro eyed the little girl carefully, seeing the look of absolute concentration in her eyes. “How does Hiro know?”
“I don’t know. He knew a lot, but he got mean so I made him leave.” Mahina answered with a satisfied look.
“Did he ever say how you can make the monster be good?”
Mahina shook her head before answering as she finished up her last drawing, “No, but the bad people did. They said that my real family was special and that the other ninja were scared.”
“Special? How?”
“They could control the monsters and make them do whatever they wanted. They even said that if I’m good and I get stronger, I can control Daddy and make him go to the bad people.”
“She said what?” Gaara questioned. “That the Akatsuki believes she could control the Kyuubi without having it taken out of
Naruto.”
Temari was silent as she leaned against the wall, grateful that Gaara had gotten somebody to take Mahina so they could talk. “Okay, let’s pretend for a moment that we’re not dealing with a child’s dream.” Temari said calmly. “If such a family existed, why wouldn’t Father try to have one of them here to help keep Shukaku under control when it was in Gaara?”
Gaara was silent for a moment before answering, “It’s possible that he tried and if he did, then there’s a good chance that I killed that individual. Physical attacks were no problem, I could defend myself against those. If that family dealt with mental attacks, then I wouldn’t have been able to do much other than lash out.”
Kankuro closed his eyes for a moment before putting the little girl’s pictures on Gaara’s desk. Gaara and Temari looked at the top picture, seeing the nine Bijuu with one person each standing in front of them. Their faces paled when they saw that one of the Bijuu was Shukaku and in front of it stood Gaara. At the end of the line, sat a large demon fox with nine tails. In front of that one, stood Naruto. “She says that this one,” he pointed to the turtle-like Bijuu, “doesn’t have anybody. The boy in front was one of Orochimaru’s experiments that got taken away by some woman.”
Nobody said anything as Gaara went to the next picture, seeing a picture of him lying on the ground with a halo over his head. On the other side of the picture, the halo was gone from his head but it was on an old woman instead. “See, she made Gaara wake up but now she’s got the halo. People are crying cause she’s sleeping, but they’re happy cause Gaara’s awake.” Mahina said with a smile. “He’s the only one that got that.”
As they looked through the other pictures, they could see the demon’s containers lying on the ground with halos. In the background, the little girl had drawn pictures of people cheering. With each picture, however, they noticed something.
The Bijuu looked sad.
When they got to the one with Naruto, they saw that he was surrounded by the Kyuubi. “Did she say why Naruto got that?” Temari questioned.
“She says that Kabuto got what Orochimaru wanted and that someone else would be able to do it.”
As Gaara turned his attention to the very last picture, he spoke no words despite hearing his sister’s gasp of either horror or surprise. “Oh, my gods…” Temari whispered. “Mahina dreamt that?”
There, they could see the reason why she had been so scared. On a single piece of paper, she had drawn the demons attacking every established nation and destroying them with nothing more than a mere flex of power. That, however, wasn’t what held Gaara’s attention.
In the center of all the drawings, a demonic Naruto stood with a grin on his face that told of pure evil.
“I told you that you would get into trouble when the stupid people saw your dreams.”
Mahina was silent as she looked up at Hiro, seeing the look in his eyes. “Daddy says…” Mahina started, her voice trailing off. “It made me wet my bed. I drew it so I wouldn’t have that bad dream again.”
Hiro was silent as he knelt down in front of Mahina, his eyes soft. “Oh, little one, don’t you understand yet?” Hiro questioned. “I’m the only one that truly loves you. Everyone else is a liar.”
“No, you’re a liar!” Mahina yelled at Hiro. “You’re always lying! You said that Daddy and Gaara are both bad!”
“Draw a picture of me and show Gaara! Watch his reaction when he sees it!” Hiro ordered, anger showing in his eyes. “Do you want to know a secret, Mahina? Do you want to know something that not even Gaara and his siblings want to admit?”
Mahina covered her ears and shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes. “No, go away.” Mahina sobbed.
Hiro smiled coldly as he put his face close to Mahina’s before whispering, “Once upon a time, Gaara of the desert killed me.”
