Chapter Twelve – Evening Discussions
The evening passed fairly well; Iruka worked with the two younger boys while Kakashi allowed Itachi read to him, occasionally helping with a word he didn’t know. Once the lesson was finished, they let the boys play a game quietly together and the Jonin went to pull the scroll he had promised the other adult.
Dinner went smoothly, and the two adults got the trio bathed and changed. Iruka settled Itachi and Sasuke in their room, tucking them in, and Kakashi tucked Naruto into his, reading a chapter from their current story.
“Papa,” the boy asked during a brief lull.
“What is it, sunshine,” he answered, setting the book in his lap and looking at his son.
“Papa still love me,” the silvery blond haired boy asked, looking up at his father.
Kakashi felt his heart break, and he quickly scooped his sunshine into his lap. He hadn’t given thought that Naruto would be feeling worried about his place in the household now that Itachi and Sasuke were there. The boy had eagerly accepted the two, and he’d been relieved by that since he knew that his son would be good for the two new members of their family.
“You’re worried I love Sasuke and Itachi more than you,” he asked, watching the little boy closely.
“Yes, sir,” he whispered, fingers holding tightly onto the silver haired male’s shirt.
“Hatake Naruto, look at me,” the man said gently, heart aching as he hoped the child would be able to understand what he had to say. Once the deep blue eyes met his own dark eye, Kakashi continued.
“First of all, I love all three of you equally,” he told him. “You are just as important to me as Itachi and Sasuke are. You were given to me to love by your other daddy, who was very special to me, and I will never ever replace you. Do you understand?”
When the child nodded, he cradled him closer and spoke again. Kakashi needed to know that Naruto would understand everything he was trying to tell him. He never wanted his son to doubt his importance to him again.
“There will be times where you’ll be studying things with Iruka because he can teach you better on certain subjects than I can, and I’ll do the same with Itachi and Sasuke. When I have to do that, I’ll make sure to spend extra time with you so you know that you’re very much loved. You are my little ray of sunshine, and you always will be.”
“Okay, Papa,” he said softly, wrapping small arms around his neck.
Kakashi held him close, breathing in the soft scent of his little boy. His hand gently stroked his back, comforting the child in his arms.
“I want you to come to me so we can talk like this; it doesn’t matter if you’re okay or feeling scared like you were,” he told his son. “I will always make time for you, okay?”
“Yes, Papa,” he told him, snuggling close to his father.
The two cuddled for a while, and the Jonin soon tucked the tired little boy back into bed. Naruto quickly dozed off, and Kakashi put a bookmark in to mark their place before kissing the child’s forehead.
“Sweet dreams, my sunshine,” he whispered before heading out of his son’s room to head towards the family room.
Iruka looked up from the scroll, blinking when he spotted the look on the other adult’s face. He wasn’t used to seeing that troubled look there and was quick to question him on it.
“Everything all right?”
“I’m going to have to make sure to balance my time better,” the silver haired male answered, dropping tiredly onto the couch beside the other. “Naru-chan just asked me if I still loved him.”
“Oh kami,” the chunin murmured. “He’s not as well adjusted to the presence of the boys as we thought he was.”
“Exactly, so I’m going to have to do what I can to make sure he knows he’s just as loved as the other two are. I don’t want any of them feeling left out, and I managed to somehow overlook that our sunshine wasn’t as comfortable as we thought he was.”
“We both missed it,” Iruka reminded him. “He’s too good at hiding his fears sometimes, and it’s scary how deep his thoughts can go. I honestly thought he was all right when the boys were brought here; he seems to adore them a great deal. I had no idea he was feeling this way.”
“Tell me about it,” Kakashi sighed, running fingers through his hair. “Maybe I should’ve included Naru-chan when I scheduled the boys to see the mind healer.”
“It’s not too late to do so,” the slightly younger male replied. “At least we’ll be able to make sure he transitions through this with the healer’s help. An outsider reminding him that his papa still loves him might be what he needs to adapt to these changes.”
“I’ll head back over there tomorrow,” the Copy Ninja agreed. “It bothers me that I had no idea he was feeling this way. Here I was thinking I was getting better at reading his moods, and the little squirt was able to hide it from me.”
“Like I said, he hid it from both of us. We’ll find a way to balance things out, Kakashi. Raising children is a learning process, and we’re both trying to learn along with the kids. It’ll work out as long as we keep trying and make sure they know we love them,” Iruka supplied, setting the scroll aside.
“I know, but I still feel like I’ve failed him,” the silver haired male told the other. “I was worried about this exact thing when Minato-sensei entrusted Naru-chan to me. I honestly thought I would screw up, and now it seems I have.”
“No, Kakashi, you haven’t,” the chunin said forcefully. “All parents make mistakes because they’re human. Just because someone becomes a parent, it doesn’t mean they automatically are able to read their children and do everything right. The world doesn’t work that way. Naru-chan’s daddy knew exactly what he was doing when he chose you as Naru-chan’s papa. You learn from your mistakes and work to correct the errors when they are made. That’s what makes you a good parent, and the fact you adore him makes you a great parent.”
“My father died when I was young, and Minato-sensei took me in because I was still too young to live on my own,” Kakashi said softly. “I never thought I’d be a parent so I pretty much tried to avoid being involved on babysitting missions during the team’s D-rank phase. I’d run the errands needed or chores around the house, leaving Rin and Obito to handle whatever kid we were stuck minding. They would tease me for being lazy, and I thought I was being clever for managing to avoid such an awful chore.
“Truth is, it wasn’t that I was lazy but more scared of being around children. I spent my youth training and didn’t have interactions with others my own age. Minato-sensei called me an old man in a kid’s body once, and he was right. Looking back on it now, I have to wonder if that fear and the inability to interact with people my own age isn’t what is setting me back on being a parent now.”
“I think you’re doing an amazing job, Kakashi. There’s no instruction guide for raising kids, and you’re managing just fine without it. Just keep learning from mistakes and talking to the boys, you’ll do just fine. It’s how I manage with them,” Iruka shared. “I was nervous when you and Sandaime-sama asked me to help you raise Naru-chan. I wasn’t bad with kids but raising one? It was a learning process and still is. No one is perfect, not even you.”
Kakashi ran a hand through his hair, thinking on what the other had told him. Iruka was right, and the genius knew it. The problem was accepting that knowledge when he’d been trained to expect much more of himself.
“I’m too hard on myself,” the silver haired male said. “It’s one of my weaknesses, honestly. I expect perfection from myself because practically everyone expects the same.”
“Perfection is just a daydream, Hatake Kakashi. It takes hard work, repetition, and a lot of mistakes before anything you learn is mastered,” the longer haired male told his friend. “You wouldn’t expect the boys to be perfect, would you?”
“Of course not,” Kakashi answered back quickly.
“Then why expect it of yourself? You are going to be the role model those boys look up to. They’ll burn themselves out trying to be perfect if they see you expecting that of yourself. They need to learn to just do their best and give it their all anytime they set out to learn something, just the same as you do,” Iruka advised, making the other man smile.
“Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that we’re role models and not just their parental figures,” the Jonin replied. “I’ll try to keep that in mind, I promise.”
“Good because I don’t want to see you or the children hurt, and that will happen if you don’t slow down and start thinking things through.”
“Thank you, Iruka,” Kakashi said with a soft smile.
“You’re welcome, Kakashi. Now, I think a cup of tea would be nice and then we can talk about other things,” Iruka told him, getting to his feet to head to the kitchen.
“Reminds me, I made the reservation for tomorrow night,” he told Iruka, who turned to smile at him.
“I can’t wait,” the Chunin said, eyes showing his happiness.
“Neither can I,” Kakashi assured him. “We have a sitter and everything’s a go. I think we should have a great time.”
“Good,” Iruka replied, making the tea. “A night out is a good thing, and we’ll see where this takes us.”
The Jonin smiled to himself, knowing Iruka was right. They needed time away from the kids that didn’t involve missions, and they’d be able to take this slowly and see how the relationship developed. Truth was, he was hoping that it would work out and become something deeper. They would just have to wait and see.
