Chapter 12: Their reasons
The Wind Country’s sunset was something
really beautiful. Gaara found himself watching this spectacular event along with
his older brother Kankuro at the village’s outsides, all because Kankuro had
asked to talk with him.
“Tomorrow is the day, otouto,” said
Kankuro, referring to the event of Gaara’s official announcement as the Godaime
Kazekage. “Gaara…I wanted to talk to you about this…are you sure you want to be
Kazekage? You know it’s not going to be easy…and I’m not talking about the job
itself.”
Gaara looked at Kankuro over his
shoulder and blinked slowly; then his gaze returned to the sun setting in front
of him. The red haired boy smiled weakly.
“I have learned a lot since our battle
in Konoha, you know.” Kankuro moved closer to Gaara to listen to him carefully.
“I had to say that it was very difficult and cost me a lot to understand but I
finally made it.” Gaara’s eyes never left the sunset view, the bright colors
reflecting on his vivid aquamarine eyes, so full of feelings. “Happiness,
sadness and sorrow. Joy, fear and comfort. Hate, anger and forgiveness. I had
know all those kind of feelings since the beginning of my life and yet I
couldn’t see them until I met Uzumaki Naruto—” Gaara lifted his hand against the
sun on the horizon.
“—His confidence and conviction can be
seen plainly, displayed on his own self with every single action and word. It’s
like if he just knew the path of the future and how to walk it. Yet I know he
doesn’t, but he keeps fighting and defending his loved ones and dreams because
that is his desire…his heart’s content.” Kankuro observed all this with
understanding eyes; his brother continued, “I want to have that ability too. I
want to defend my convictions and perhaps be appreciated, not be feared as a
monster but be needed…as the Kazekage, this is my affirmation.” and he smiled.
Kankuro nodded and placed his hand on
Gaara shoulder. His little brother looked at him and blinked slowly, as the sun
was finally giving its last rays.
“Then you know we support you, Gaara. We
are your family.”
“Thank you.”
They stayed there in silence until the
first star could be seen. Kankuro suggested it was time to go back for dinner;
Gaara told him to go ahead, explaining that he would catch up with him in a
moment. The boy sat on the sand observing the star and thinking of the new saga
of his life that was about to start the next day.
Not very far away from there,
silver-white orbs deep in the use of the Byakugan had seen the whole scene. Neji
deactivated his bloodline limit and sighed after turning his gaze to the early
night sky.
“Sabaku no Gaara…Uzumaki Naruto…” he
whispered to himself. Naruto was the person that opened his eyes and gave him
the courage to choose his own destiny. It was somehow amusing how that
hyperactive blonde had the ability to do such thing. He was not the only one
that had appreciated this but also the people around; he could tell that almost
no person met by Naruto could go unaffected by his personality. No one.
“Sasuke...” he whispered to himself. The
thought of Naruto bring back the memory of the younger Uchiha. He stayed
thinking of him, the blowing wind made his hair move with its pace.
Suddenly he felt his mind numb and a
pressure on his chest, his hand moved to the source of light pain and closed his
eyes, letting his senses get used to the new and strange feeling.
“Neji,”
it was like a whisper right on his ear. It was clear but he was the only one
hearing it.
“Leader-sama,” he recognized. The boy
opened his eyes while focus in the telepathy-like jutsu the leader used to keep
contact with the Akatsuki members.
“You have made contact with the
Ichibi no Bijuu, Am I right?” It wasn’t a
question.
“Yes sir.” he confirmed. The Leader
taught him the technique to communicate as part of his training, but this was
actually the first time he uses it while Neji not being near the lair.
“I want you to use the connection
technique on the Ichibi no Jinchuuriki...” Neji’s
eyes got wide for a second and then returned to normal.
“As you command, Leader-sama.” Neji got
up and the communication technique ended. As he ran through the desert he was
carefully choosing the moves he was going to perform for the order just given to
him.

Sasori was playing with a miniature
puppet, one that had the form of a certain white-eyed boy. The puppeteer smiled
as he made the puppet moved like if it was dancing.
“What are you doing Sasori-danna?” asked
the voice of none other than Deidara. The blonde shinobi jumped off his bird and
landed next to Sasori, the big bird became smaller and flew to its master’s
hand.
“I was thinking…” Sasori made the Neji-puppet
sit on the floor and move his head to look at Deidara, “About Itachi’s boy.”
“Neji-chan is doing really fine in his
training, Leader-san hasn’t been all cranky about the whole Link issue, so it’s
fine.” Deidara said matter-of-factly.
“I was thinking about the whole Link
issue, precisely,” Sasori looked over his shoulder to his blonde partner. “What
are you doing here anyway?”
“Leader-san sends me.” Deidara took out
another of his birds and made it fly to the city “He told Neji-chan orders
concerning the Ichibi no Bijuu, I have to take Neji-chan to Leader-san as soon
as he finish, yeah.” the rock shinobi smiled happily. His attention was caught
by the Neji-puppet on the floor and he got on his knees and poked it.
“So, he is really doing The Link role
after all.” Sasori folded his arms against his chest and looked over the sky,
thinking “It’s going to be hard for him.”
“Since when do you worry about Neji-chan?
You barely talk to him when he’s training with you. But at least you’re not like
Hidan, he’s so mean with the kid, yeah.” Deidara said while picking the puppet
up and looked at it closely.
Sasori blinked and returned his gaze to
Deidara. The blonde was the one, besides Itachi, that spent most time with Neji;
he had even made sure to stop Hidan in more than one occasion from hurting the
boy beyond limits. Deidara later confirmed him that this was because if Itachi
wasn’t near there was no one else to watch over Neji and if the kid was The
Link, they needed the boy in top conditions. The Leader had asked him to do it
and Deidara did not mind.
The whole thing made Sasori remember
when Neji was chosen as the one to be The Link. It had been almost more than
seven years back in time; it was a rather difficult task to find an applicant to
the role…
Everybody was reunited in the dark
cave. Sasori was looking at his current partner, Orochimaru, with a bored
expression. The Snake shinobi had that smirk of his again, and Sasori wondered
how much patience he had left to stop himself from punching the expression off
the snake’s face.
“Enough.” ordered the Leader, now he
had all their attention “We already discussed the plan about the Jinchuuriki and
Bijuu, but no one here has told me a thing about ‘The Link’ role. I asked you
to find candidates for it,” he hissed while narrowing his eyes at them.
“You have to admit that the task is
rather difficult, Leader-san,” said Orochimaru. “A shinobi with strong heart, an
owner of a pure soul yet corrupted, and besides that, willing to do the role…”
Orochimaru chuckled. “I’ll keep looking, but I make no promises.”
“…I found a girl from the village of
the water fall” said Zetsu. “I followed her for a while, but I noticed with
deception that her intentions and true nature were not pure at all. She was
seeking revenge and just pretending to be nice to get it, waste of time.”
“I think I have a candidate.”
Everybody looked to the newest member
to the organization, Itachi. The leader looked at him and waited.
“There’s a boy I used to train in
Konoha that may fit for the role.” Itachi moved closer, the rest of the Akatsuki
let him pass to finally be face to face with the leader.
“Are you talking about you little
brother?” asked Deidara, Itachi glared at him.
“Of course not,” said the Uchiha as a
matter of fact, he returned his gaze to the Leader “If you don’t mind, I’ll like
to discuss this with you.”
The leader nodded and they went to a
corner of the place, the leader looked directly to the young Uchiha and blinked
slowly.
“Tell me, Itachi…” he began “What
makes you think this boy is right for the role?”
“This boy will do anything I said to
him. We have a deal, to put it simply…he is very strong and in his heart lives
no malice, what he thinks is hatred is just his helpless sorrow in disguise,”
explained Itachi. The Leader nodded. “But…”
“But?” Sir Leader raised an eyebrow.
“He is a Hyuuga from the branch
family. That means he is sealed and therefore if I take him they can kill him
using the seal.” Sir Leader smirked while Itachi just blinked in confusion.
“The Hyuuga Caged Bird seal, right?”
Itachi nodded “It can be actually useful…the god statue can take the power of
that seal, I can dispel it and after that train the boy to become The Link,” Sir
Leader closed his eyes “But tell me, Itachi, how is this boy corrupted?”
Itachi smirked and closed his eyes,
Sir Leader watched the young Uchiha, he had never before seen Itachi somehow
happy.
“He
belongs to me…body and soul” Itachi opened his eyes. “To use him as The Link
I ask you to dispel his seal, that’s my only condition.”
It was all Sir Leader needed for
now. He got the description of the boy and sent some summon birds to track him
and see for himself if the boy was really worthy.
When they came back with the others,
Sir Leader was in a much better mood. Everybody looked at Itachi, who seemed
rather calm with the whole situation.
“Looks like Itachi found our future
Link,” he say “Just one thing, Itachi.” The young Uchiha looked to him “You will
bring the boy here when the time is right and I will see him with my own eyes,
after that I’ll give him the proposition of becoming The Link…” Sir Leader’s
voice turned even darker “I accept you condition but hear me and hear me well.
If he refuses to become The Link you shall kill him at the spot, understood?”
Itachi stayed in silence for less
than five seconds then closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Sasori blinked slowly, his mind was
telling him a very large variety of conclusions, most of them could be easily
being discarded, but the question was still there.
Who was this person to Itachi?
The read haired shinobi returned to the
reality and saw how Deidara’s bird was coming back to guide its master to Neji’s
location. The blonde waved him goodbye and made his bird bigger, leapt on it,
and flew toward the city.
“I still have not found the answer to my
question.” Sasori said to no one.

Itachi
watched Kisame go. His partner was to confirm the location of the Two Tailed
Jinchuuriki to later inform the Leader and wait for instructions. The pieces
were moving, the game was set, they were getting everything ready for their
future plan, when they were to strike non-stop until they achieved their goal.
The Uchiha
was on a tree branch, not watching anything in particular as the loneliness of
the dark woods was the only thing around him. Since the wind was also in silence
he just decided to remember. The image of the object of his inspiration came to
view…
As soon
as Itachi returned from his mission along with Kisame, all the members were call
to a meting. They were in Sir Leaders personal training grounds; The Leader had
summoned some wolf-like creatures, they were twice big and had black symbols all
over their body. The creatures were to attack Neji, who was there to defend
himself using the different techniques he had learn until the date.
Sir
Leader was calmly watching as Neji ran around the place to dodge the creatures’
black fire and melee attacks. Itachi’s eyes were always on Neji, the recognized
as the younger shinobi preformed the hand seals he had taught to him long ago.
“Katon:
Goukakyuu no jutsu!” the flames made the creatures back off and gave Neji space
and time to perform his next attack, the Hyuuga this time chose a long range
one. He took a little figure of a bird from his pouch and charged it with his
chakra and then threw it to the air “Release!”
The bird
was covered in smoke and a second latter was even bigger than the creatures.
Deidara clapped at the performance; after all he was the one who taught the boy
how to perform it.
“Not
bad, not bad!” chanted Deidara “What do you think, Sasori-danna?” the red haired
shinobi looked over his shoulder with his usual calm expression.
“As you
said, he is indeed, not bad.” Sasori’s gaze returned to the battle. One of the
creatures had been swallow by the bird and now it was ready to perform the
kamikaze attack, Neji realized the hand seals and the bird exploded, one of the
wolf alike creatures was down, the were two more.
Both
creatures attacked at long range with their black fire. Neji was hit by the
flames but dodge them rapidly and his injuries were minimum. The shinobi formed
a hand seal that this time Kisame was the one to gloat about it.
“Suiton:
Suiryuudan no Jutsu!” the water dragon blast emerged and hit both of the
creatures, one escaped while the other took the attack.
Kisame
chuckled. Deidara ran to him and waited for his comment. The shark shinobi
smirked. “Could be better.” was all he said.
“You
just want to play the ‘I’m-a-very-strict-sensei’ role.” commented Deidara. Kisame
rolled his eyes and murmured under his breath something about Deidara being an
idiot. The blonde shinobi ignored him.
Neji
continued attacking and using the Justus taught by the Akatsuki members to him
and some Sir Leader taught him as well, Itachi noticed that those were
illusionary and even psychic type. When Neji destroyed the last creature,
driving it insane and absorbing all its chakra, Sir Leader smirked and that, for
some reason, made Itachi worry.
That day
Neji was so tired that not made it into the room, Itachi carried him to the bed
and just watched him while he slept. Neji murmured some incoherent things about
something forbidden and how he had to master it. Itachi just blinked and after a
moment took the boy into his embrace and let sleep take over.
At the
present time, Itachi wondered if there was something more than the Leader told
him about Neji’s training and if there was, why Neji had not told him a thing
about it?
The Uchiha
decided that he was going to have a talk with him later.

Sasuke read
the scroll over and over again. After he finally memorized it he tossed it aside
and took another one. All the new information he had found about the Bijuus and
the power of the Jinchuurikis was amazing, he felt like he could understand
Naruto even more now but of course he was not going to say it.
He also
found more about The Link.
One of the
most important pieces of Akatsuki’s game was the person with the Link role,
Neji’s role. Orochimaru had one of the rings that make an Akatsuki member a full
one and Sasuke needed that ring, now more than he thought.
Neji was
about to start a chain reaction, it was like if the young shinobi had been
making a line of domino pieces without actually want it and now was about to
push the first one of the line and make the others fall to trigger the end.
Orochimaru
had kept the ring because he knew that some day it was going to be useful, for
one motive or another. The Snake Sannin was using it to lure Sasuke into his
sole command.
But the
Uchiha was no fool.
He wanted
power, yes that was for sure, but he was not going to lose himself in the
process. He couldn’t kill Naruto because that will be doing what Itachi told him
– he did not wanted to do it, anyway. And he was not going to blindly follow
Orochimaru; that would be almost like giving up his hope to someday return to
Neji.
He knew he
had made a very risky decision; maybe he would regret it later, but right now he
couldn’t give himself the time to think of regrets. He was running against time
in more than one factor.
Sasuke
tossed another scroll and looked over his shoulder, there was Kabuto waiting for
him at the door’s frame.
“Orochimaru-sama is looking for you.” Sasuke send the medic-nin a death glare
that made him back off and leave without another word. When he was alone again
Sasuke looked over his night stand, Neji’s hitai-ate was there, the Uchiha
blinked slowly.
“…I must
hurry.”

Gaara was
in his room looking at the folded robes that he was suppose to use the next day,
the red haired boy took the robes and put them on a chair next to his bed and
sighed.
“Good
afternoon.” Gaara looked over his window to find Neji sitting on the window’s
frame without his mask, looking at him.
“It’s you,”
the future Kazekage waited for a moment, but Neji did not said a thing or moved
form the window “What did your Hokage say when she was named as the Godaime?”
Neji
blinked in surprise, his eyes never leaving the Sand shinobi’s figure. Gaara
looked at him in the eye and waited for his answer.
“Why do you
want to know that?”
“I’m
curious.”
Silver-white orbs stayed fixed in aquamarine ones without emotion as his memory
searched for the day Tsunade was named as the Fifth Hokage. The image came
blurry and almost without sound but it came.
“She said ‘From
this day I shall protect Konoha. I am the Fifth Hokage’…I think…” Gaara
closed his and turned around to keep preparing his things; Neji got up and
walked near him.
Gaara was
not nervous or unsure; the Sand shinobi was worried about how he was going to do
his work as Kazekage. He wanted to protect the village in which is mother gave
him life and where he learned, little by little, about life, he wanted to earn
the respect of the people of it and keep it going for his siblings and himself.
“I’m sure
you will be a great Kazekage.” was all Gaara could hear before a blinding light
hit him.
Neji had
covered Gaara with a chakra barrier and now was performing the bonding seal
ritual accorded to Shukaku’s power. The Hyuuga used all his concentration and
power to change the energy around Gaara and get inside the Sand shinobi’s mind.
Neji closed his eyes while his hand were locked into a special hand seal and
waited.
When he
opened his eyes again he was in what looked like a great cave of brown rock.
There was water on the floor and sand was falling from the ceiling in different
points, at the back of the cave was an enormous cage with a single tag with the
word “seal” on it.
“Who are
you, gaki?” said a grave voice, Neji knew that it
came from behind the cage, the creature inside was creating a murderous aura
that almost made Neji sick “Ha…you passed the red haired brat’s defenses…how
unlikely.”
Neji walked
to finally be right in front of the enormous cage; he narrowed his eyes at the
sigh of the great Shukaku growling behind the bard and almost drooling in
bloodshed desire. The Hyuuga ignored the sand moving around him and formed a
hand seal.
“Ha, it
has been a long time since I saw that hand seal…you have a death wish, gaki? If
you do, I wouldn’t mind giving you that death,”
Shukaku chuckle “Even if you don’t I want to kill you.”
“Must be
difficult for Gaara to deal with you all the time…”
“Ha…Now
I get it,” Shukaku’s laugh was almost disgusting
“You are going to use that jutsu.” Neji said nothing and just
closed his eyes to concentrate “You are starting you own downfall, gaki, not
that I care, anyway…”
Shukaku’s
laugh was uncontrollable now, the sand was moving around like a storm and the
water was boiling. From a corner of the place, Gaara was observing. Neji opened
his eyes:
“Houki:
Shikanotsuno Tei Ketoru!” the sealing technique went pass the cage and hit
Shukaku with a loud crash and a blinding light. Gaara watched as Neji was
covered with the same light, the water rose and the wind blew hard and then
Shukaku’s laugh disappear and Neji banished from the sand shinobi’s mind.
Gaara then
saw a memory that did not belong to him:
He could
see a black haired boy, he opened his eyes, there were black but the shine in
them was beautiful, the boy looked at him and a tiny, almost non existed, smile
emerged.
“This is
the person Neji loves,” said Gaara while the image was fading “This is the
person why he is still standing.” he was back on the cave again, the boy looked
over Shukaku’s cage. The demon was there but he was like…sleep.
Gaara
regain conscious to find himself alone on his bed alone. The boy got up and saw
that it was night already.
“Good luck,
Neji.”
--* - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - *-- --* - - - * - -
- * - - - * - - - * - - - *--
Deidara
arrived just in time; Neji had just finished the Houki technique for
Shukaku. The blonde shinobi saw how the opal-eyed boy put Gaara on the bed and
was about to walk to the window when he collapsed. Deidara jumped and caught the
boy into his arms before he hit the ground.
“Well,
looks like you did it right, Neji-chan.” Deidara lifted Neji in his arms and
jumped from the window to his bird.
“Deidara,” called a voice into the blonde’s mind.
“Yes,
Leader-san?” asked the blonde wile flying away from the city and into the desert
to look for Sasori.
“Report.”
“Neji-chan
just ended the Houki technique. For the looks, it was a success. He’s
unconscious right now and I’m bringing him back to the headquarters, yeah.”
answered Deidara while shifting Neji into a more comfortable position in his
arms.
“Excellent. Locate Sasori and Tobi and tell them to come back.”
“Yes sir!”
Sir Leader
ended his connection with Deidara and the blonde shinobi kept flying and finally
found Sasori, who was with Tobi waiting form him to return.
“Deidara-senpai!” greeted Tobi while waving his arms. Deidara rolled his eyes;
Sasori dismissed his scorpion-like puppet into a scroll and jumped on Deidara’s
bird. Tobi did the same with clumsy moves and almost fell from it.
Sasori sat
beside Deidara and once Tobi had finally managed to climb on the bird the rock-nin
ordered his bird to resume flight. Sasori looked at Neji, who was calm and still
in Deidara’s arms, lost in the realm of unconsciousness.
“Ne,
Sasori-danna, what are you thinking?” Sasori smirked, that send a chill down
Deidara’s spine, Sasori just did not smirk, he could have a tiny grin or
something but definitely not a smirk.
“I was just
thinking that I had finally found out who is this boy to Itachi.” the sand
shinobi chuckle under his breath “If he was here right now, he would be jealous
of you holding him like that.” Deidara pouted at the comment.
“Neji-chan
is unconscious. I can’t let him fall—Itachi, not mention Leader-san,
would kill me, yeah.” he said “And if you don’t mind, I want to stay alive for a
while, thank you very much.”
“Whatever.”
Tobi moved
and looked over Sasori’s shoulder to see Neji, the other boy wondered how his
closest thing to a friend was doing after his first experience using the
Houki no fuuin technique. The Houki or Tools of power were high level
techniques, and even if Neji was trained to use them, his unconscious state
showed that he used a lot of chakra to perform it.

The wind
was calm, the sky was clear and almost all the people of Suna no Sato were
standing around the main Tower, waiting. A figure was there, he was dressed with
the traditional blue and white robes and hat with the wind symbol trade mark of
the Kazekage.
Gaara
lifted his eyes and slowly too the hat off to look at the people of his village.
The elders were behind him and his siblings at his sides. The young shinobi
blinked and then looked at the sky.
Baki raised
a hand, getting everyone’s attention, the silence was ruler until he spoke
“Everyone, starting today Sunagakure has a new Kazekage, let the gods guide him
and us into a new future.”
The
applause and greetings wishing for a new future filled the whole city. Gaara
looked at the people and then showed a tiny smile.
“I shall
protect Suna no Sato…” he said, just his siblings listen to him, his little
brother’s voice was full of a feeling of sincerity. “I’m The Godaime Kazekage,
Sabaku no Gaara.” Temari and Kankuro looked at each other and then nodded and
clapped too.

Itachi was
walking fast, he ignored everyone that dare to speak to him or just glared to
make it clear that he was not in the mood to talk. The Uchiha went straight to
his room and there he found what he was looking for.
Neji was
asleep on the bed; he was still wearing his black uniform and accessories.
Itachi walked to him and started to take the accessories, like the head and arm
band, off him in silence.
Outside the
room, Sir Leader was stand against the wall with his arms folded, he opened his
eyes and looked at the door. His lips moved to form a smirk.
“It has
begun.”
To be continue…

gave me part of the ideas for this story and now I finally got to that part.
Feel free to ask if you have doubts about it.
Anyway,
