~~~~ "Ummm... Mina? I know I'm a little turned around in these woods, but isn't Sand in the other direction?" Naruto was trying hard not to sound like he doubted his friend, but the woods were getting creepier by the minute and this was most certainly not the way to Sand Country. Mina stopped munching on her apple and swiveled around on the ground to look at Naruto. When she saw how hard he was trying to make his face look positive and affirming she smiled gently. "I guess I should have made myself more clear. We are most certainly heading to Sand, but that doesn't mean we're heading toward Sand. We're actually on our way to Witch Village. There is an enchanted door there that will let us pass through to caves in practically any part of the world. It's a witch's shortcut. With any luck we'll arrive in Sand a whole day before my brothers.""Witch Village?" The normally calm and collected Neji looked like he was about to lose the lunch he had just eaten.
"There's nothing to be afraid of."
"Witch Village?" Naruto just now managed to get the words to fall from his lips. His mind was spinning. He had heard plenty of stories about Witch Village growing up, and none of them were good. It was the place parents, and guardians in his case, threatened to send wicked children. There hadn't been a day of his childhood that Naruto hadn't been threatened with a permanent vacation there.
"What would you think if I told you I feel the same way about Konoha? To me, it sounds like one of the most horrible places in the world. The people there treat you like shit, Naruto, and most of your dreams revolve around the fact that they are awful to you. Neji, I haven't tried to read you, but I can tell that there is something to do with Leaf Village that leaves you feeling helpless and cold. If you ask me, you would have been lucky to live somewhere so nice as Witch Village. Even bad witches don't believe in harming children." Mina's eyes had faded to a light violet color but Naruto wasn't entirely sure that had been the witch talking. Mina's eyes were brimming with tears.
Naruto was stunned. How could he explain to Mina that even though what she had said was true, Konoha was his home and he loved it. Besides, she was an Uchiha. Obviously her family had sent the wrong twin away; no one could hold that against her. It wasn't possible that Mina was the evil twin. Look at her brother! It was Neji who broke the silence.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to insult you by sounding frightened of your heritage. I was just shocked, that's all."
"I'm sorry, too. Do they have Ramen there?" Naruto asked eagerly. Mina nodded.
"Well then, it can't be all bad. Now come on, we should get moving. I'll take your word for Witch Village being safe, but you aren't going to convince me these woods aren't freaky."
All three laughed at the observation and stood up from their lunch, stretching.
"We're only about two hours away now. I promise it's not what you're expecting. When we get there we'll probably get a hotel room for the afternoon so we can rest and be ready to head out late tonight. I also need to go to the bank so we'll be able to get lodging in Sand country."
"Witches have banks? I thought they kept their money in pots of gold at the end of rainbows."
Neji slapped Naruto playfully in the back of his head as they followed Mina down the well-worn path.
"Yes, Naruto. Witches have banks. You're thinking of Leprechauns and you better hope to the stars we don't run into any of those. They have an amazing sense of smell, and if you've eaten their favorite food... they'll follow you into the shadows and attack you." Mina sounded so serious that Naruto shuddered.
"What's their favorite food?" Naruto asked, deciding to avoid it at all costs.
"I'm glad you asked. Leprechauns have a blood... thirsty... taste... for... Ramen!!!!!!"
On the last word she jumped toward Naruto and Naruto let out a squeal practically jumping in to Neji's arms.
Neji eyed Mina coolly.
"If he has nightmares tonight, you're the one he's going to be keeping up. Not me."
"She's not serious, is she Neji? Leprechauns are just imaginary, right? Neji? Neji?"
Naruto picked up his pace and followed his friends down the path.
Sasuke did not move. At the moment, he was wishing with all of his might that he could just melt into the dirt and away from his brother. Itachi had been still since his outburst and his eyes were closed tightly.
"Change of plans."
Sasuke looked at him with alarm. He wasn't about to disagree.
"We are going to head to Sand to intercept them."
Sasuke was about to murmur something in agreement when he realized that wasn't a change of plans; that was the original plan. Wasn't it?"Isn't that where we're already going?"
"Yes, that's what I just said." Itachi was staring ahead looking blank. Not the cold blank that he always looked, but an actual vacant kind of blank.
"Ok."
Sasuke looked at the ground. This was bad. Angry, hateful, cruel Itachi he could deal with. He knew how to deal with pain and
suffering. He didn't know what to do about this version of his brother and that made him feel frightened.
"Do you think you could unchain me now?"
~~~~
Neji gasped as they walked through the gate of the village that had appeared out of nowhere. Mina was right. This was not what he had expected. Colorful shops and houses greeted his eyes, children raced through the streets, and amazing smells were pouring toward him from every direction. As they walked further into the city he couldn't help but notice the wary glances Mina was getting. Everyone smiled at her as she passed, but once she had taken a step further they clutched their children a little tighter, walked a little faster, or lowered their conversations just a notch. They stepped into a friendly looking inn and a fat little woman with a crooked smile scurried behind the counter.
"Prynhawn da, Esma. One room, two beds, please."
Esma smiled warmly at them. Neji was curious about the language Mina had greeted the squat looking woman with, but decided to hold the question for later.
"One room it is. Room 108. And who are these handsome young gentlemen?" Neji noticed Mina blush slightly.
"These are friends of mine." His friend looked terribly uncomfortable. "Is Uncle around?"
"Behind you, little one. Shwd i chi?" A gruff voice echoed from behind them. Had he just appeared? Neji couldn't remember the last time someone had snuck up on him like that. He was a ninja after all. Mina embraced the older man tightly.
"Da iawn, diolch yn fawr. I need to go pick up some money, and then visit my aunt's before they hunt me down. I'm also going to stop by one of the restaurants and have someone run them over some dinner. I'd like to talk to you when I get back, though. I have a few questions. Will you be around?"
"Of course, I'll take these up to your room. Esma, give them a little privacy, will you?" The woman tottered off leaving them alone in the lobby.
"OK, you'll be very safe here. Do me a favor though and don't leave the room. Esma will bring you up your food and I should be back in a few hours."
"We can't explore?" Naruto's bottom lip was protruding in a pout. Neji couldn't believe there was only a year separating himself and his blonde friend.
"No, unfortunately you can't explore. I really think you should both try to nap after you eat. We may not have a chance to sleep again for a while. Something has changed. I can't explain it, but I know that it's true. Now please head upstairs. I'll be back before you know it."
On her prodding they headed up the narrow stairwell and were met at the door by Mina's uncle. He gave them the key and watched them carefully as they entered the room. Neji locked the door from the inside and sat on the bed. Naruto sat down next to him.
"That man gives me the heeby-geebys." the younger boy started.
"If Mina trusts him then we should trust him too. I admit though that his gaze is intense. I wonder if he can read minds too?"
Naruto looked horrified.
"I sure hope not! Some of my thoughts were... not polite. Didn't you think Esme looked like a garden gnome?"
Neji shook his head and smiled at his friend. He'd never spent this much one on one time with Naruto and he was beginning to see what Sasuke saw in him. There was something oddly refreshing about a person who said out loud every thought that passed through his head. Since he had spotted Naruto and his dark haired rival kissing in a closet at a birthday party about a year ago their relationship had changed. He guessed it was because he had kept what he had seen a secret and both Naruto and Sasuke respected him a great deal for that. Whatever it was though, the three had become close friends and Neji was truly hoping that when they found Sasuke he was still in one piece. If not, it was going to be a long way back to Konoha.

Itachi wordless unchained his little brother, still looking blank... possibly even shaken up.
"What happened just then?" Sasuke had to know. Itachi wasn't the only danger on this road and if his brother was losing his mind, there were thieves and criminals that could make short work of both of them. Sasuke glanced down at his wrists. Without his chakra or a weapon he was a sitting duck. He'd never had a better chance to kill his brother than this, but if Itachi was dead, he had no protection. Also, he was a little worried about the witch. Even if he could somehow manage to talk Naruto back from being Kyuubi, how could he do it while fighting a witch at the same time? She must be incredibly powerful to garner such a healthy respect from his brother.
"What happened just when?" Itachi whispered. It was like he was in a trance.
Sasuke had to do something. This was an insane situation and so he did the most insane thing he could think of. He threw a punch
squarely at Itachi's jaw. Much to his surprise it actually connected and he lost his balance and fell on top of his brother. For a second
they lay still and then Sasuke was suddenly beneath his brother unable to breathe. Itachi had one hand around his neck and was squeezing it so hard Sasuke felt like his neck might snap if he didn't suffocate first. He fought for breath or for leverage but Itachi just stared him in the eyes and continued to choke him. Just before the world went black around him Itachi moved and Sasuke rolled around on the ground gasping for breath. When he'd finally recovered enough to sit up he leaned against the embankment and glared at his brother.
"I could have killed you a minute ago. You need to get a grip." Sasuke grumbled.
"Why didn't you kill me then? Have you taken a liking to me?" Itachi said it with a smirk and Sasuke realized his brother knew damn well why he hadn't killed him. "I see you've discovered that you are going to need me out here if you want to live long enough to save your little boyfriend." This was the Itachi he knew. Sasuke almost breathed a sigh of relief.
"Why did you yell out? I need to know what happened because if it happens again I need to be able to protect us. Are you under some kind of spell?" Sasuke was venturing his best guess. If a witch was involved you never could tell.
"Some kind of a spell..." Itachi said it as if it were the first time he'd considered it. He looked carefully at his brother, as if gauging
exactly how much information he should arm him with.
"No, I don't believe I'm under some kind of spell. This witch, her name is Mina, and she is a very powerful mind manipulator. I
underestimated her power though. It appears she's trying to read my mind, even with the distance between us. Let's get moving. We have at least another day before we reach our destination and they will be waiting for us there."
They hopped back up onto the road and set off. Sasuke wasn't sure, but it seemed to him that this whole situation was suspicious. Itachi had said earlier that the plan had changed. Regardless of how his brother tried to explain it away he knew that it was the truth. The plan had changed. Did that mean that the first plan was not to follow Naruto and the witch, but to run away from them? Had that been why their first night had seemed like such a desperate escape. If that was true, why were they headed right for them now? Sasuke would have loved to have some of his questions answered but he knew it was no use voicing any of them. He was lucky he'd gotten no more than a throttling for hitting his brother. If Itachi started acting crazy again maybe he should kill him and take his chances out here along the road. Even without his chakra he was still a skilled fighter and he had other skills as well. He just wished he actually felt as confident as his mind was convinced he should be.

Mina walked back in to the inn as the sun was setting in the west.
"Did your aunt's wear you out?" her uncle mused as she walked inside and collapsed into a chair.
"That's one way of putting it. Those women are crazy." She smiled. This was so comfortable. She always felt so safe around her adopted uncle.
"So what's up with the 'curse club'?"
"The what club?"
"You heard me. You all have curse seals. That's just a coincidence?"
"Neji's cursed?"
"You didn't know?"
"I've been a little distracted since I met him. What can you tell about it?"
"It's a simple one actually. It's a slave's seal and if activated it could kill him. It's no doubt used to keep him in line. You could
remove it easily if you wanted, that should be well within your powers."
Mina tilted her head, considering it.
"I'll keep that in mind. Like I said, I've been distracted. I'm assuming you could tell what's in Naruto?"
"Yes, You were wise not to allow him to wander around the village. The whisker marks would be a dead give away to any of the older folks."
"Do you think I could control that seal?"
The older man considered this for a minute before answering.
"I do. I don't think you want to try though. You care about him. That much is obvious. To do it you would have to give yourself over almost completely to the witch, and I'm not sure she'd be gentle with him."
"You're right. I'd already pretty much given up on the idea anyway. At first I thought I might be able to control him and use him to help me with Itachi, but other issues have arisen. That brings me to what I wanted to talk with you about. This morning I believe I entered Itachi's mind, but he was at the very least a day's distance from me. Is that possible?"
"I suppose so, although not even the witch inside you could reach someone from that far away. You're bound though, and you're twins, and you were born under a blood moon. All of those things work in your favor Mina."
"Do you think I might be able to control him? I've tried it before and it hasn't worked, but I've never felt power like this either."
"I can't tell you what you can and can't do. Anything is possible though, little one. Just please be careful."
"I will uncle. Thanks for the talk. I best be getting back to my friends. We'll be heading out soon."
"Come back when you get the chance. I'd like to meet this little brother of yours."
"Hey! I didn't give you permission to read me!"
"If you want to keep your thoughts from me, Mina, you need to think them quietly."
"I'll keep that in mind."
Mina walked up the stairs to room 108. If all of this worked, she might be rid of her older brother and hugging her younger brother
within the next 24 hours. Now if she could just figure out how to lure them to her…
~~~~
Itachi watched his brother carefully as he walked. Hopefully strangling Sasuke had put him in his place for now. He had enough to
worry about with Mina; he didn't need to be fighting off Sasuke as well. When in hell had she gotten so powerful? After he'd given up
where they were going his first inclination had been to head somewhere else, but if she found where he was going once she could do it again and again. Besides, he had a new plan. By now Mina obviously knew about Sasuke and she would stop at nothing to rescue him, of that he was sure. What he needed to do was lure Mina to him and then threaten to kill Sasuke if she didn't do what he wanted. He would have her in his control again and this time he wouldn't let her go.
