----------Hours later, after the sun had set----------
Kakashi slammed the alarm quiet and cuddled closer to Iruka's back, arms wrapped tightly around a slim waist, not ready yet to get up and follow an old woman's orders. He was comfortable! And warm! And he had his teddy bear! Nope, he wasn't going to get up for at least another hour.
“Mmm.... 'ashi…” Most of the Jounin's name was lost in a sleepy, sated stretch. Iruka snuggled closer. “Shouldn' you be getting a hold of Sasuke-kun by now....?” He rolled over and lifted his nose up to Kakashi's chin nuzzling the other man's throat a little, like a kitten.
“In a bit...” Kakashi muttered back, hugging Iruka tighter with a happy sigh as he leaned into the nuzzle. One of his hands crept up Iruka's back to tangle in long silky brown hair. At that moment life was perfect. “When I feel like it...”
A soft sigh puffed against the Jounin's throat. “'K... but I'm only going to let you lounge around for...” he yawned spoiling the effect of his minor chastisement “For a little while,” he finished.
“Yes, mama,” Kakashi teased and he gently pushed Iruka's chin up so that he could kiss him lazily. He cherished every moment he spent with Iruka in any way... kissing and making love just happened to be his favorite ways to spend time. Though Iruka was only younger than Kakashi by one year it sometimes felt like more, and Kakashi greatly enjoyed ‘corrupting’ him, as he put it. Smirking at that thought the Jounin deepened the kiss as he slowly became more awake.
He was almost lulled – almost – but duty called, and he reluctantly pulled away to smirk into dual colored eyes. On rare occasions, when visual stimulus was low, Kakashi left the Sharingan eye open. It was a display of how relaxed he was, though he couldn’t do it for too long. “Lazy Jounin... You have work to do,” he chided playfully and kissed Kakashi's nose and eyelids before making a break for the edge of the bed. If Iruka gave Kakashi the chance, the Jounin might be able to lure him into staying in bed for the rest of the night. “Up,” he ordered as he stood, still naked, and made his way to the bathroom.
Kakashi just smiled and watched Iruka's back with hungry eyes as he left the room. But as soon as the door was closed he hunkered down in the sheets again, firmly cocooning himself in the warm spot left by his lover and more than ready to doze for another hour or so.
Iruka's head poked around the bathroom doorframe. “Up,” he demanded again, having fully expected that from his lover. Shaking his head he remained where he was not intending to move until Kakashi did as ordered.
“Nngh... Five more minutes...” Kakashi begged, curling up even tighter and pulling the cover over his head.
“No. Up. Now, or I'll make you...” he warned and he would to.
Determined to have his five minutes the Jounin began to snore softly.
That was it. Iruka walked in, cold wet towel in hand since he'd had it at the ready, and lifted the bottom edge of the covers. Not minding a little water in the bed himself, he dropped the towel unexpectedly on Kakashi's sensitive feet. Iruka only knew they were sensitive for... well, he blushed every time he thought of the reason he knew.
With a yipe Kakashi jerked his feet closer to his body and freed his head from the cover to glare half-heartedly at Iruka. “That was mean...” he whined. “I'm tired!”
“That's your own fault, koi... you have work to attend to...” he smiled a little as he removed the towel before it soaked through to the mattress. And if you’re good and do your duty I'll reward you later with a nice warm-oil backrub.” ::Anything to get this mess with Sasuke cleared up... I can just imagine the thoughts of the Hokage on this matter...::
“You'd better... Especially since it's your fault I'm tired,” Kakashi teased, finally getting out of the bed. He pulled Iruka close for a kiss and leered at him playfully. “Shower with me?”
He was about to refuse when he realized they might just chase poor Sasuke out of the apartment if they didn't both shower. So why not together? He sighed, but it was feigned annoyance. “Yes, you big baby... want me to wash behind your ears too?”
“Yes, please, Mama,” Kakashi teased with a grin, tugging Iruka into the bathroom with him. Had it been up to him the shower would have lasted a good couple hours but after only a half hour Iruka was pushing him back out, reminding him of what he had to do. Pouting Kakashi got dressed and went to the bedroom window. It only took him a moment to spot a messenger bird and another moment to send it speeding on its way, looking for Sasuke.
Sasuke suddenly appeared before Kakashi. He'd come in through the window, but he might as well have just appeared by magic. He straightened from his crouch and tilted his head curiously, though his expression was sober.
Not even showing the least bit of surprise Kakashi just turned around and led the way to the living room. He sat down on the couch and motioned for Sasuke to take the seat across from him. Now... Where to begin?
To be honest Sasuke would have rather been with Naruto at the moment, even if he was turned away at every offer of renewing their friendship at the least. However, he followed his sensei into the room and sat as motioned. ::Funny how I easily think of him as my sensei once more...::
“Sasuke,” Kakashi began, not liking the fact that he had to play interrogator with one of his students, “I need to ask you some things, and I need you to be completely truthful. Understand?”
“Things...” he repeated, and knew immediately what his sensei meant.
“Yes.” Deciding to test whether Sasuke would be truthful Kakashi started with a question he already knew the answer to. “First of all, how do you live while being dead? What do you live off of?”
Iruka walked in just then a tray bearing tea in his hands. “It's finished,” he said brightly and set it on the low table before and between them. “Hello, Sasuke,” he added still chipper.
Sasuke's mind was in limbo caught between maintaining his secrecy for the most part and regaining the trust he'd once had from the people he still wanted to call his own. It was almost comical how, even though he'd tried to be aloof and indifferent to them, they'd wormed their way into his very person. He supposed, if he wanted trust, he would have to give it first. He let out a slow breath and steeled himself for an uncomfortable evening. “Konban wa, Iruka-sensei,” he greeted in turn and took the steaming cup of tea offered him. He sipped it thoughtfully waiting for Iruka to sit next to Kakashi, close but not too close, and then said over the mug his words blowing the steam as he spoke, “Blood. Human blood is preferable, in fact necessary, but even animal blood will do for a short period of time.”
“Why is human blood necessary?” Kakashi asked as he relaxed just a margin, confident that Sasuke would tell him the truth now.
“Genetic and dietary differences between animal blood and human blood. My cells apparently use human blood cells as nourishment,” he shrugged a little with one shoulder and sipped his tea again. It tasted sweet, but he wasn't complaining. He still enjoyed beverages, but what he missed the most really, was onigiri. A sigh of memory escaped him, but he looked into his lowered cup to cover it. Maybe they hadn't heard it. It was a little embarrassing.
Iruka nodded and swallowed his mouthful of tea before saying, “That makes sense...”
Kakashi nodded once in agreement. He didn't bother to reach for a cup since he couldn't drink without lowering his mask. “I know already that you're stronger and faster than before, and that your senses are sharper, but what else are you able to do now that you weren't before?”
“You know I can't tell you everything, Kakashi-sensei.... What sane person ever gives up all their secrets?” he responded his voice low. “But I will tell you some of it,” he added. “Good enough?”
“I'll take what I get,” Kakashi answered with a slight smirk, not surprised at all by a response like that.”
“Fine,” he nodded amiably to that and leaned back more in his chair thinking. “I will tell you that the more powerful the person I drink from is, the more powerful I become. Like the Sharingan, power is imprinted into every fiber of a being including blood cells. I have limitations though since I'm still what vampire-society calls a Fledgling. The physical attributes of the Change are the most profound and noticeable, but there are subtle and invisible ones too... Like...” he though a moment and looked around the room before choosing a book then extending his hand towards it from where he sat. The book neatly flew right to his palm and he took it out of mid-air to read the title, though he had read it from afar. Black eyes lifted to the two men across from him. “Telekinesis.”
Kakashi just blinked at him for a moment in surprise before chuckling. “Bet that comes in handy... What exactly does being a Fledgling mean - besides being young - and when do you stop being one?”
“Not as often as you might think. I forget I have it most of the time. It is a reflexive reaction to some things though...” Sasuke laid the book on the table, smirking behind his bangs as he leaned forward to do so. Iruka-sensei's expression, though hidden mostly behind his cup, was priceless. “I believe that I stop being a fledgling when I can walk in the daylight again. Being a fledgling means you have more limitations than your elders.” ::I'm not giving you my weaknesses Kakashi-sensei...::
“Iruka, your eyes are about to fall out,” Kakashi teased. “What would happen to you if you walked in daylight now?” he asked Sasuke curiously.
Iruka blinked and blushed a little. “Sorry...” he straightened and smiled a little at Sasuke who only nodded in return, solemnly.
Sasuke remained a little stoic, but he answered, “Burns. Very nasty burns. I'm a little more tolerant to fire than most vampires. I was gifted with Firestarting by my Maker since he had seen me use Katon: Goukakyuu no Jutsu. Besides... it's difficult for me to walk about during the day anyway. I'm a little on the sluggish side so I Rest instead.” The capital "R" was prominent in that word, and it was obvious.
“Rest?” Kakashi asked, not missing the significance of the word.
“Uhhh... I sleep, sort of,” he answered and sipped from his tea again. “It's complicated and something you would have to see to understand.”
Not satisfied with that Kakashi continued to drill Sasuke for as much information as he was willing to give. He questioned him about everything - how long he could live, if he was truly immortal or just nearly, how often he needed blood, how often he needed human blood, how he was getting his human blood supply (Kakashi didn't tell him he already knew Sasuke had visited Iruka for a meal), and many, many more. It was just before predawn when the Jounin finally decided he'd gotten as much as he was going to get for now. Head full to bursting with information he would need to later relay to Tsunade he said, “I have one more question, but there's something I want to tell you before you answer.” Kakashi took a deep breath and sighed, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees.
Iruka had long since fallen asleep and was using the arm of the couch for a pillow with his legs bent but still off the couch, feet on the floor. The combination of blood loss, lack of sleep and great sex made him too tired to even attempt to stay awake for the whole questioning.
Sasuke tilted his head very slightly and muttered an, "I'm listening..." He was getting hungry and was irritable because of it.
Kakashi sighed again and began to speak, hoping he wasn't making a mistake. “I don't know what happened between you and Naruto the day you left, but I do know what happened afterwards. Naruto closed himself off from everyone - became real quiet and snapped at everyone and everything for the littlest thing. He became broody. He didn't laugh, didn't smile, didn't tease, didn't chatter endlessly, stopped playing with the kids, always looked like he wasn't getting enough sleep, some days he didn't eat a thing... It was as if all the happiness had drained out of him. Once when I asked him what was wrong he yelled at me, saying that I didn't really care and that I wouldn't have even thought to ask if he hadn't been right in front of me. I think he honestly believed that no one cared and that no one would notice if he suddenly disappeared.” Kakashi sighed sadly. “I know there were days when he seriously considered killing himself...” He paused in his story and looked up to see Sasuke's reaction.
Brooding black eyes stared back at him ordering him wordlessly to continue and get to the point. His mouth was grim, set, and pursed as though he were holding in check some great emotion. And the emotion he felt... wasn't even close to being describable by so dull a word as great.
After a moment Kakashi continued. “He was like that for a little over half a year. And then, all of a sudden, he was smiling again. The smiles were a little too forced but I could tell he was trying to put whatever had hurt him in the past and move on. Slowly he began to open up and laugh again. Very slowly. By the time of the last Chuunin exam he was almost completely back to his old self. It was the final exam that clinched it. After his second win he was running around like a little kid - never mind that he'd just used up most of his chakra.” Kakashi chuckled at the memory. “And then he won the tournament. Had he yelled any louder they would have heard him in the Lightning Country. It was so wonderful to see him back to his normal self. He was laughing and gloating and begging Sakura for a date since he was the winner - she agreed only to shut him up. Though she managed to drag me and a few others along so that it wasn't technically a date but it still made Naruto happy.” Kakashi sighed. “And then you came back... He's gotten quiet and snappy again. But there's something new... Now he's always looking over his shoulder, as if watching for a ghost - and he doesn't realize he's doing it.” He was watching Sasuke carefully now. “I don't know what happened between you and Naruto when you left and I'm not going to ask you to tell me, but... you hurt him badly when you left.” Kakashi paused, fishing for the right words. “I guess... I'm asking you to be careful and not hurt him again.”
Lowering his head, Sasuke hid dually dark eyes behind and in the shadow of long bangs. Their dark color was deep with sorrow and pain, dark emotions that he had to be cautious of. Naruto had been that hurt by his leaving? It was hard to believe, but Kakashi-sensei only lied when he really had to and never about something like this. The bloodlust was roiling beneath the surface of his control angrily trying to get out. His gut was twisting at the thought of the pain Naruto must have felt. ::If it was anything like the pain I kept locked away that first year...::
Sasuke finally lifted his face to Kakashi fully again. The blood red of the Sharingan stared back at him, but Sasuke was calm, almost serene, as if he didn't know that the Sharingan had manifested. “I have no intention of hurting him a second time. The first time was a bad judgment on my part... I do not regret leaving the village to gain the power needed to protect the ones I love and cherish from monsters like my brother. I regret throwing Naruto away, throwing away the comaraderie of Team Seven and the friendships I didn't even realize I had.... I have to go... Now. Say anything else you need to say quickly...” he warned and then stood waiting for Kakashi to finish.
“Just two more questions, and then you can go. What are you going to do after you've killed Itachi, and is there a way for you to become human again?” Kakashi sincerely hoped that Sasuke could become a normal human again. To be able to live for centuries... the 'gifts' that came with being a vampire didn't seem to outweigh the curse of seeing everyone you cared about age and die while you stayed young.
“This curse is irreversible and I knew that going in. I'm dead, Kakashi-sensei. I'm just living on anyway. As far as what I'm going to do after I kill Itachi... that depends on the village... and Naruto. If I am asked by either I will stay, but if I am asked to leave by Naruto, I will go.” He was getting clipped in his answers. It was time to go before Kakashi started to look too tasty for his own good.
Kakashi nodded in understanding. Recognizing the hunger on Sasuke's face for what it was he wordlessly dismissed him with a wave of his hand.
And Sasuke vanished as if he had never even been there.
