“As I thought…” Ayame resumed her spot to keep watch seeing her teammates resting still. “Well, then… shall we have a battle of wits… grandfather?”
*~*~*
The busty woman dismissed them. The second part of the exam had been completed and people had dropped left and right leaving but a small circle of three teams to match up for the third exam; one team short for the sudden death matches it seemed. Lan versus some kid named Rock Lee of the leaf; Liz versus another girl name Mai of the sand; Ayumi versus a boy, also of the sand, name Daisuke.
“Pity… I wanted to play with that Hyuuga young man.” She sucked her teeth in disappointment. Nonetheless, she will have her chance. The teams scattered about their plans of action for training.
“Let’s go.” Lan ordered the two females in his team and they made way to return to the inn they had been staying in, retrieve their things then vanish for the next month.
“I’m proud of you.” Those were the words of her grandfather once they opened the door to their room. He had business to care for with the Hokage, so a Konohagakure representative met them when they had completed their trek to the tower. “I’m sure it was Lan’s wit and leadership that led to the successes thus far.” Ayumi looked off to the side feeling the eyes of her teammates looking at her waiting for her objection at the slightly misplaced credit, but none came. “Do not think the toils stop here.” He turned on them. “There are Shinobi on that roster out there much better than you are.” They just looked on straight ahead. “I suggest you think about your training plans now.”
“Hai!” They all stood at attention.
“Grab your things we will depart.”
*~*~*
They were sitting in the woman’s office. Lee, Neji, TenTen, and Naruto the silence was deafening. The tension was high as the three, freshly released from the first two quarters of the Chuunin exams earlier in the day.
“NEJI!” Naruto was waiting for the Hyuuga.
“Honestly, does he never have a mission?” A slightly exhausted TenTen looked at the blonde-haired boy heading in their direction.
“Naruto, We have to talk, with Hokage-Sama.” Neji stated flatly bringing the boy’s excitement levels down to a more manageable level. Naruto knew that serious look in the boy’s eyes, they knew something.
“She’s visiting the hospital right now. Checking on her patients. Come after dark when she should be doing paper work. She’ll love the distraction.” Naruto poked his bottom lip out, the gears in his mind trying to figure out what they knew.
“Okay, We’ll be back then.” Neji said and the trio walked off to wash and rest properly.
“What’s on your minds?” The woman looked at them each waiting for one of the others to speak up first.
“They have Hinata-Sama for sure.” Neji spoke up looking at the Godaime in the eye the woman looked at her. “A girl from their group spoke to us.”
“I see.” The woman just looked on waiting.
“She also… mentioned Naruto’s name.”
“Me?” Naruto looked on pointing at himself.
“There was no attack or anything, it was just talk.” TenTen piped up.
“How much they know exactly...” Tsunade looked most grim at this point. “What they’re planning; how much more time will Hinata be alive… is she even alive anymore. Despite what this girl has told you, she has told us nothing but trivial matters simple mind probing jutsu could do and they’ve have her for years”
*~*~
“How dare you come into here demanding I leave the room?!? Insolent child!” Nanasa gritted her teeth and made way to slap the white haired girl before her.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you Auntie.” Ayumi just stared at the woman not even flinching a bit when she reeled her hand back for the impact. “We both know I’m faster and stronger than you and you would only get hurt if you tried that. I have business with grandfather and it does not concern you. Kikankage business.”
“You Bitc-”
“Nanasa, stop it.” The old man spoke up and Ayumi smirked further pissing off the older woman.
“Fucking brat.” Nanasa dropped the offending hand and stomped out of the office and slammed the door shut. Her grandfather stood there looking at her, a bit more than mildly impressed with the spine his granddaughter had been showing.
“You and that bitch daughter of yours are not to harm Hinata while I’m gone.” She stood her ground looking the white haired man in the face.
“Harm her?”
“As if I don’t know about the memory suppressants you’ve been giving her all these years. Whether you like it not we’re females, we gossip. And I’d notice what she knew the day before vanished suddenly.” She looked away from him and walked about the office touching plants and the like. “I want to make her suppressants. Something you are to watch over when I’m gone only because I no longer trust Nanasa.”
“You really are being insolent” The old man looked at her. “She has cared for you over the years.”
“Of course, she had to. After my mother died by mistake rather than me she couldn’t kill me without looking like a guilty party.” She watched the old mans face, the gears in his brain working overtime right now. “Oh yes, yes. You’re going to say my mother was sick, but that was hardly the truth. For a long time I thought Auntie was stupid, always giving me the wrong tea. Always giving me the “Adults” version of the drink.”
“Are you accusing your Aunt, who took care of you of murder?” The old man frowned.
“Of course, because mother started with her strange illness right after I was declared the next in line for Kikankage, right after I beat out her son, the boy I had been hopelessly in love with, but its right for family to love one another isn’t it?”
“Don’t speak of things you know nothing about?”
“You mean, don’t speak of the son that Nanasa was supposed to have aborted, but wound up giving to childless couple in the village. The son who inherited her personality of acting like she’s better than everyone. Why wouldn’t she want Lan to be next in line rather than me? She looks at me like the rest of you do! Like I have no skill, natural talent but no way to harness the raw energy, but I’m spectacular and you know it.” Her voice was loud and she looked away calming down.
“How do you-”
“It took a long time looking, because I never looked, but he looks exactly like her. But I know a lot of things, of the grandfather who wanted his daughters never to marry and be happy, because like my cousin I was to be aborted.” Silence. “That man brought to me years ago, after father died. I didn’t mess that up. He had a jutsu on him. A jutsu that erased all traces of that Byakugan. He must be nothing but a lesser member in the Hyuuga household. Being in Konohagakure I learned a lot.” She smirked.
“She will not be harmed.”
“Nanasa will no longer be her attendant and the one who will, will have no contact with Nanasa for the entire month I’ll be gone.” She looked at the old man smiling. “That daughter of yours would get rid of your final chance of your legacy being left behind in a big way. She’s so full of hate she’d sabotage me for when I do become Chuunin, Jounin, Kage… when I do take those precious eyes of hers for my own it’ll be too damaged.”
“So do it now, why wait?”
“Hinata is nowhere near potential. When I do it, I want to do it big. She will be with Liz, the two in constant training for the next month. Liz will need it if she is to grow as well. Being beneficial to Hinata is just an extra bonus.” Ayumi finally was seated on the desk of the old man.
“Where are you going?”
“On a journey to strengthen myself. I’ll meet you in Konohagakure the day of the final test.”
“Why not take Lan with you?”
“I trust him as much as I trust his mother, old man.” Ayumi sneered dropping a bag on his desk. “The nurse in charge will be Liz’s eldest sister Mei. She and I have already made the arrangements of her being Hinata’s attendant. She will make all of her foods. Anything Nanasa has been doing for her. That…” She pointed to the bag she had dropped. “Is a more potent suppressant, made of my own concoctions.” The old man merely smiled. “Do not play me old man. I will ruin your legacy.”
“Brazen, enough to make threats?” Her grandfather turned his chair around to face the window.
“No threats, promises.”
“Why the change, Ayumi?”
“I wised up to what needs to be done.” She turned her back to exit the room. “If I want to be more powerful than you, I need to make my own path to power, and what I think is right.” She opened the door. “I’ll be gone before dawn.” She closed the door and left the office her hand over her heart and left to her home.
“Good, its about time…”
